SBI and Saudi Aramco to explore digital asset business partnerships

Japanese financial services conglomerate SBI and Saudi Arabia’s state-controlled energy giant Saudi Aramco have jointly announced their exploration of potential collaboration in the realms of digital assets and semiconductors.

Digital asset portfolio co-investing

The partnership, which was publicly disclosed last week, aims to delve into co-investing in each other’s digital asset portfolios. Such an arrangement will leverage SBI’s substantial holdings and the formidable position of Aramco as the world’s second-largest company by revenue, boasting a staggering $604 billion figure. The partnership will mark a strategic alliance that goes beyond geographical boundaries, underscoring the global impact of digital asset investments.

The collaboration between SBI and Aramco extends beyond mere investment, with SBI actively seeking to identify Japanese digital asset startups keen on expanding their operations into Saudi Arabia. The joint effort aims to provide comprehensive support to these startups, facilitating their integration into the Saudi market and contributing to the growth of the digital economy.

 

SBI Middle East

In addition to this venture, SBI is set to establish “SBI Middle East” in Riyadh, serving as a central hub for its operations in the Middle East. This move aligns with SBI’s recent announcement of a $100 million joint fund with Standard Chartered, based in Dubai, solidifying its commitment to fostering financial partnerships in the region.

When contemplating cryptocurrency activities in the Middle East, Saudi Arabia might not be the first destination that comes to mind, given Turkey’s significant crypto adoption rate and the UAE’s well-established crypto regulatory authorities, such as Dubai’s VARA and Abu Dhabi’s ADGM.

However, Chainalysis data reveals that Saudi crypto activity is steadily gaining ground, experiencing the most significant year-on-year growth (12%) to June 2023. Additionally, the country’s Vision 2030 initiative involves efforts to diversify its economy. With that, blockchain and Web3 are being embraced.

 

Tokenization

While lacking a formal crypto regulatory regime, recent reports suggest that Saudi regulators are warming up to the idea, indicating a shift in approach. A recent collaboration has emerged between the central banks of Saudi Arabia and Hong Kong which will explore tokenization and payments infrastructure.

It is noteworthy that both SBI and Aramco explicitly referred to “digital assets” in their collaboration, avoiding the mention of cryptocurrencies. This emphasis raises the possibility that the focus might extend to tokenization, an area where SBI has a robust presence, notably through the establishment of the Osaka Digital Exchange (ODX), set to commence trading tokenized securities later this month.

As part of its digital asset investments, Saudi Aramco has previously engaged in blockchain initiatives, including investments in VAKT, a post-trade solution for the oil sector. Additionally last year Aramco invested in blockchain startup Data Gumbo, which utilizes blockchain in order to bring about operational efficiencies. The collaboration extends to the approval of electronic bill of lading (eBL) providers like TradeGo.

In February, Aramco signed an agreement with droppGroup to build out a range of Web3 technologies. Furthermore, Aramco’s investments in companies like Red Date Technologies and IR4LAB underscore its interest in developing blockchain-based services, including document and supply chain solutions.

The project stated:“There is nothing like GRVT being built, not in the zkSync ecosystem nor outside of it. By being able to design and deploy custom hyperchains connected through hyperbridges, teams like GRVT’s can build entirely new use cases.”The ability to design and deploy custom hyperchains connected via hyperbridges opens the door to entirely new use cases, affording projects like GRVT the freedom to explore innovative possibilities.A layer 3 ValidiumGRVT will play a role as a Layer 3 Validium within the zkSync ecosystem. Validiums are Ethereum scaling networks that bear similarities to zk-rollups found in Layer 2 solutions. The critical differentiator is in how they handle data. Zk-rollups maintain data on-chain, whereas Validiums securely store it off-chain. This approach enhances user security by safeguarding against front-running and market manipulation.GRVT’s alpha version is set to make its debut next month, followed by the mainnet release in the first quarter of the upcoming year. Promising a transaction speed of up to 600,000 trades per second and less than two milliseconds of latency, GRVT leverages zkSync’s “horizontally scaling” infrastructure to deliver enhanced performance.Explaining the concept of horizontally scaling, Hong Yea, GRVT’s co-founder and CEO, told The Block:“Horizontally scaling means to deploy additional underlying pairs as new hyperchains. Say BTC/USDT perpetual futures is one hyperchain and so on. And we can look to add other infrastructure components like this as new hyperchains to scale throughout, as they can interoperate. This allows high-frequency traders to trade more efficiently with high transactions per second similar to a central exchange.”Token launchGRVT enjoys the backing of CMS Holdings, Hong Kong’s digital assets wealth manager Metalpha, alongside Matter Labs and others. Yea founded the company alongside CTO Aaron Ong and CCO Matthew Quek. Although incorporated in the British Virgin Islands, the firm employs people who are based in Hong Kong, the UK, Lithuania, and Singapore.It recently disclosed that it had successfully raised $7.1 million in pre-seed and seed funding in an equity with a token warrant round, achieving a $39 million post-money valuation. The launch of GRVT’s token is anticipated in 2024.GRVT is also making a concerted effort to obtain trading licenses in various jurisdictions. Currently, it has attained a virtual asset service provider (VASP) license in Lithuania, with work ongoing to achieve licensing in Bermuda. The firm hopes to then expand in Europe and the Middle East going forward.

Standard Chartered joins with local partners in Hong Kong to launch stablecoin

Standard Chartered Bank Hong Kong, a licensed bank and subsidiary of British multinational banking group Standard Chartered, has partnered with local companies to launch a Hong Kong dollar-based stablecoin in the Chinese autonomous territory.Photo by Chapman Chow on UnsplashJoint venture formed In a press release published by Animoca Brands, a blockchain-based gaming and Web3 venture capital firm based in Hong Kong, the company outlined details of the partnership between it and Standard Chartered, alongside Hong Kong Telecom (HKT), Hong Kong’s dominant fixed-line, mobile and broadband telecommunications firm. The partnership has been structured as a joint venture between the three companies, with the objective of launching the Hong Kong dollar-backed stablecoin. Local regulator and central bank, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has been working towards implementing a regulatory framework specifically dedicated to stablecoins.  Legislative framework incoming As of the end of 2024, proposed legislation that would enable such a framework had advanced to Hong Kong’s Legislative Council. Before the bill can be enacted into law, the legislative process requires three readings of the bill accompanied by a series of debates and the scrutiny of lawmakers.  Once the legislation has been signed into law, it will require stablecoin issuers to obtain a license from the HKMA. In the case of this particular joint venture, the promoters plan to apply for a license in due course. Standard Chartered is already deeply embedded in Hong Kong’s financial system, making this latest development all the more significant. Alongside HSBC and Bank of China (Hong Kong), Standard Chartered issues the local currency, the Hong Kong dollar. That activity is carried out under the oversight of the HKMA.  The HKMA launched a sandbox environment relative to stablecoins in order to provoke an exchange of views between the regulator and market participants. The three parties to this latest joint venture have been sandbox participants since July of last year, alongside JINGDONG Coinlink Technology and RD InnoTech. JINGDONG declared its intention to launch a Hong Kong dollar-backed stablecoin last year. RD InnoTech plans to launch the HKDR stablecoin in conjunction with HashKey Exchange. Stablecoins ‘starting to eat the world’Earlier this month, Rene Michau, Standard Chartered’s global head of digital assets, set out the bank’s thoughts on stablecoins in an article published on the company’s website and co-authored by Circle Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Jeremy Fox-Green. Within it, Standard Chartered recognized the potential of stablecoins, suggesting that they are key to unlocking a future where blockchain acts as a new “internet of money.” The article went on to state that it is critical for stablecoin issuers “to maintain deep connections with strong banks and for those banks to be building digital asset capability.” The company recognizes that stablecoins are “starting to eat the world,” referring to a global stablecoin circulation that has already surpassed $100 billion.  Evan Auyang, President of Animoca Brands, pointed out that “we are still in the early stages for mass adoption of stablecoins across retail, enterprises and institutions.” He added that Hong Kong has a bright future as a global Web3 hub. Susanna Hui, Managing Director at HKT, believes that “issuing an HKD-linked stablecoin will enhance payment efficiency, streamline transactions, and provide greater security and transparency through advanced Web3 innovations.”
