Data Labs leverages blockchain technology for data-based travel itinerary app

Web3 & Enterprise·November 28, 2023, 9:32 AM

Founded in 2021, Data Labs is changing the landscape of travel by leveraging blockchain and NFT technology to offer a wallet service called “MyInfo Market,” where users can store and control their own data, according to an article published by Korean news outlet Data News.

In particular, MyInfo Market can be used in tandem with the company’s travel app Yeohaengdaelo, which utilizes users’ travel-related data to recommend travel destinations and organize and share itineraries. Users can directly manage their personal preference information on MyInfo Market and selectively submit the information necessary to receive rewards. “It’s not just a travel itinerary app, it’s also a way for individuals to earn money using their own data,” said Kim Jong-hyun, CEO of Data Labs.

Seamless travel experience

Yeohaengdaelo integrates Naver Blog, Instagram and KakaoTalk services into one app, aimed at relieving the stress that comes with travel preparation, Kim explained. It utilizes data such as the region a user is traveling to, their travel companions and information on facilities, as well as their travel preferences and patterns. The app also provides real-life services such as discounts at designated restaurants near the travel site.

Building trust and value

The company explained that it intends to maintain a cyclical data ecosystem where users can willingly provide their data to get travel recommendations and receive suitable compensation for that information in return. Because the ecosystem is blockchain-based, it provides a safe method of personal information management.

Since the launch of Yeohaengdaelo in July, Data Labs has been developing a business model that can secure a solid user base and revenue for affiliated businesses. It expects to reach 55,000 members next year and 2.14 million members by 2028. The company also expects to use the business model as a basis for generating KRW 500 million (approximately $386,000) in revenue next year by linking marketing channels, issuing discount coupons for kids’ amenities and providing data royalties.

In the future, Data Labs plans to expand Yeohaengdaelo to include not only travel preparation services but also information on various discounts that users can receive based on the location they are in. Efforts like this will be necessary to provide unique user experiences, the company said.

Data Labs is also currently receiving support through Y&Archer’s tourism acceleration program. Y&Archer is a Korean investment and acceleration firm known for its AC Program, which discovers, accelerates and supports startups through various projects.

“In the past, companies profited from personal data, but Yeohaengdaelo allows individuals to monetize their data. Our goal is to create a world where individuals can regain the rights (to their own data) and be at the center of Web3 content,” Kim said.

Hong Kong Police Issue Warning as Binance Users Lose Funds to Phishing Scam

Hong Kong Police Issue Warning as Binance Users Lose Funds to Phishing ScamHong Kong has witnessed a surge in phishing scams targeting Binance users, prompting local law enforcement to issue a cautionary advisory.Photo by Serey Kim on UnsplashCyberDefender warningThe warning was issued by Hong Kong police via its CyberDefender Facebook page on Monday. Over the past two weeks, at least 11 Binance customers in Hong Kong fell victim to phishing scams, collectively losing over $446,000 (equivalent to HKD 3.5 million). These scams primarily involve fraudulent text messages.According to Hong Kong police, these fraudulent text messages claim to be from Binance and ask users to verify their accounts by clicking on a link provided within the message. On Facebook, the warning stated:“Recently, fraudsters posing as Binance sent text messages claiming that users must click the link in the message to verify their identity details before a deadline, otherwise their account would be deactivated.”Upon clicking the phishing link and entering their login credentials to “verify” their accounts, victims unwittingly grant fraudsters full access to their Binance accounts. This modus operandi mirrors the tactics commonly employed in phishing scams.CZ chimes inBinance CEO Changpeng Zhao (CZ) also joined in the cautionary chorus, issuing a warning to customers on his X account. The crypto sector in Hong Kong has been facing challenges recently, largely related to the recent JPEX fraud case. The losses incurred from the JPEX exchange scandal have swelled to an estimated $180 million, with over 2,300 victims filing complaints with local authorities. The JPEX scandal led to multiple arrests in Hong Kong and prompted authorities to intensify their efforts against illegal crypto activities. The Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) of Hong Kong introduced regulations mandating the licensing of all crypto exchanges operating within its jurisdiction earlier this year.To date, only two exchanges, HashKey and OSL, have secured licenses under this regulatory framework. Numerous other crypto exchanges in Hong Kong have submitted license applications, but Dubai-headquartered JPEX, despite heavily promoting its application for a Hong Kong license, failed to submit an application to the local regulator. In the wake of the JPEX scandal, the SFC published a comprehensive list of companies seeking crypto licenses and expanded its list of suspicious platforms.Cyber security firm Kaspersky found earlier this year that phishing related to crypto trading is on the rise in Asia, particularly in the Philippines. Binance’s CZ has had to issue warnings where phishing is concerned on previous occasions. He did so in July when the founder of decentralized crypto exchange (DEX) Uniswap was hacked. In February of last year, CZ came out again to warn users of a massive SMS-related crypto phishing scam. Back in 2018 a serious attempt was made to compromise the credentials of Binance platform users via phishing techniques. As phishing scams continue to pose a significant threat to crypto users in Hong Kong, and with the aftermath of the JPEX debacle still reverberating through the industry, vigilance and caution remain paramount for participants in the region’s crypto ecosystem.

Antpool overtakes Foundry as largest bitcoin mining pool

Antpool overtakes Foundry as largest bitcoin mining poolAntpool, a Singapore-headquartered open access mining pool that supports ten cryptocurrencies, has recently surpassed Foundry USA to become the foremost bitcoin mining pool in terms of monthly blocks mined. That’s according to a report published by TheMinerMag, a bitcoin mining industry publication run by New York public relations firm BlocksBridge Consulting. This development indicates a shift in bitcoin mining pool dynamics since January 2022. According to Bitcoin network data, Antpool mined 1,219 blocks in November, slightly edging out Foundry USA’s 1,216 blocks. The total rewards for Antpool’s miner clients reached 8,672 BTC, excluding the 83.6 BTC designated for refunds.Photo by Norman Wozny on UnsplashBitmain affiliateAntPool is an affiliate company of leading crypto mining equipment manufacturer, Bitmain. This surge in Antpool’s hashrate aligns with Bitmain’s substantial importation of over 4,800 metric tons of Antminer S19XP and S19XP Hydro to its U.S. subsidiary in Georgia between June and November. These imports have contributed to an estimated total hashrate exceeding 37 EH/s. The exact activation status of Bitmain’s imported hashrate and whether it is utilized for its own purposes, remains unclear.Foundry USA had previously held the leading position in mining pools since early 2022, benefiting from the rise of North American mining operations following China’s crackdown in 2021. While Antpool consistently secured the second position, its hashrate began closing the gap on Foundry USA around June this year.China vs. U.S. competitive dynamicThe two companies dominate bitcoin mining. With one having a parent company headquartered in China and the other being U.S.-centric, their positioning in terms of overall blocks mined is being seen by some as a reflection of competition between entities in China and the United States in terms of bitcoin mining dominance. Addressing that dynamic in response to CoinDesk recently, CryptoQuant Web3 Analyst Bradley Park wrote:“China is aggressively mining ahead of the approval of a Bitcoin ETF. As the Bitcoin halving nears, I anticipate a competitive surge between China and the US in mining machine productivity. This is because the unit cost of mining Bitcoin is likely to escalate due to increasing power expenses and rising mining difficulty.”The bitcoin hashrate has been climbing continuously throughout 2023, reaching new all-time highs along the way. It’s worth noting that despite Antpool’s dominance in blocks mined, data from BTC.com reveals that the company’s self-reported real-time hashrate consistently lags behind Foundry USA’s over the past three months. The cause of this discrepancy remains uncertain, raising questions about variance or reporting errors affecting Antpool’s real-time hashrate.Bitmain established Antpool in 2014, and it was later spun out of Bitmain to become an independent entity in 2021. Meanwhile, Foundry is a wholly owned subsidiary of Digital Currency Group (DCG). Both Bitmain and DCG have been facing financial challenges over the course of the past year.In a separate development, Foundry took to social media platform X on Thursday to confirm that it is discontinuing support for The Graph protocol, Axelar Network, Polkadot and Flow. The firm said that the changes were decided upon in order to better align the business with its strategic business goals.
