Taiwan's cryptocurrency scene has been rattled by the arrest of David Pan, the founder of ACE Exchange, a prominent cryptocurrency platform.

According to local media outlet Liberty Times, this development is part of a broader operation targeting fraudulent activities involving 13 additional suspects. Law enforcement authorities, as of now, have confiscated assets totaling around NT$200 million ($6.4 million), dealing a significant blow to the alleged fraudulent operations.

A sophisticated fraud scheme

The arrest of Pan, alongside company executive Lin Nan, stems from accusations of a sophisticated fraud scheme orchestrated by the duo, along with their team. The modus operandi involved deceptive tactics, including the use of fake advertisements on popular social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook. Over the past three years, more than 100 investors have reportedly fallen victim to the scheme, losing over one billion yuan ($140 million).

Lin Nan, leveraging social media, enticed potential investors with promises of quick wealth through the listing of virtual currencies on well-known exchanges. Simultaneously, David Pan lent credibility to ACE Exchange, fostering trust in the virtual currencies listed on the platform. However, investors soon discovered that the virtual currencies touted as having realizable value were, in reality, "junk coins" with plummeting values or no circulation options.

Ace Exchange office raid

Legal charges filed against the suspects include fraud under the Criminal Code, the Money Laundering Prevention Act and the Banking Act. Law enforcement agencies in Taiwan conducted multiple raids, including at ACE Exchange offices. Lin Nan's residence yielded NT$111.52 million ($3.6 million) in cash, with additional cryptocurrency seizures bringing the total to over NT$200 million ($6.4 million).

In response to the scandal, ACE Exchange has distanced itself, asserting that the arrested individuals are not current employees. The company clarified that Pan had ceased active involvement in daily operations as of 2022. ACE Exchange is actively cooperating with the investigation and has positioned itself as a witness in the case.

MOCT delisting

Despite the ongoing investigation, ACE Exchange, founded in 2018 and a dominant player in Taiwan's crypto market, continues to operate, upholding regulatory obligations and prioritizing user interests. However, the incident has prompted the platform to announce the delisting of the MOCT-TWD trading pair, effective Jan. 8, in alignment with its commitment to regularly evaluate and delist tokens not meeting stringent criteria.

This development occurs amid heightened scrutiny of cryptocurrency exchanges globally. CoinDCX, a major crypto investment firm, recently faced allegations of bank and crypto fraud on its mobile application. Similarly, Lee Jeong-hoon, former chairman of Bithumb, South Korea's major crypto exchange, received an eight-year prison sentence over alleged fraud, awaiting an impending appeal verdict. Taiwan, like Hong Kong, had also been dealing with the fallout from the fraudulent activity of Dubai-headquartered crypto exchange JPEX.

David Pan is also the founder of the Dubai-based ZORIXchange cryptocurrency platform. Prior to crypto ventures, Pan worked for KPMG in Taiwan as its COO for startups and innovation.

These cases underscore the critical need for comprehensive regulation of the crypto ecosystem. As digital assets gain popularity, the risks of fraudulent activities rise, necessitating collaboration between governments and regulatory bodies to establish and enforce stringent regulations that protect investors and uphold the integrity of virtual crypto exchanges.

Untangled Finance Launches Tokenized RWA Platform

Untangled Finance Launches Tokenized RWA PlatformUntangled Finance has officially launched its tokenized real-world asset (RWA) marketplace on the Celo network, according to a report by CoinDesk.Photo by Blake Wheeler on UnsplashVietnamese rootsThe platform’s inauguration follows a successful $13.5 million venture capital funding round, with Fasanara Capital, a London-based asset management firm, serving as the lead investor. Untangled is also London-headquartered, with most of its employees from Vietnam.Private tokenized credit poolsIn addition to its investment, Fasanara Capital has initiated two private tokenized credit pools on the Untangled platform, focusing on off-chain operations and underwriting loans.Untangled’s expansion plans are ambitious, aiming to extend its reach to the Ethereum (ETH) network and the layer 2 scaling solution Polygon (MATIC) via Chainlink’s Cross Chain Interoperability Protocol. This strategic move transforms Untangled into a multi-chain and interoperable RWA credit protocol, catering to a broader spectrum of users and assets.Untangled Finance’s specific focus lies in the private credit market, a sector valued at over $1 trillion. The platform aims to bridge the gap between traditional private credit and blockchain technology by tokenizing these assets. Currently, decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms account for only $550 million of private credit assets, according to data from rwa.xyz.To achieve this, Untangled is concentrating on fintech lending, including services like invoice financing and consumer loans based on salary advances. The platform also targets “green assets,” such as working capital or development loans for eco-friendly infrastructure projects like battery swapping stations.Untangled serves as the infrastructure to host blockchain-based credit pools. Investors, including certified investors, firms, and decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs), can deposit funds into these pools to lend and earn a yield. In return, depositors receive an ERC-20 token representing their positions in the pool.Asset tokenization potentialAsset tokenization, the process of representing traditional financial assets on a blockchain, has emerged as a key growth opportunity in the digital asset space. This trend comes as the industry grapples with the aftermath of a challenging bear market and the fallout from high-profile implosions witnessed in recent years.Tokenization has the potential to transform various real-world assets, such as credit, real estate, or bonds, into blockchain-compatible tokens.Untangled Finance is attempting to set itself apart from other RWA lending protocols through innovative product features, including a built-in liquidation engine designed to auction off collateral assets if the pool’s health falls below a certain threshold. The platform also employs a credit assessment model to monitor borrowers’ future default risks and offers an auction-based withdrawal mechanism for investors seeking an early exit from the pools.Francesco Filia, CEO and CIO of Fasanara Capital, commented on the significance of this development, stating:“We see an upcoming merging of worlds. “On one side, fintech lending which fills the gap in underserved SME and consumer markets and, on the other, the way values are being transferred within the new world of digital assets.”

Coinone’s recent addition of USDT/KRW trading pair expected to reduce Kimchi premium

Coinone’s recent addition of USDT/KRW trading pair expected to reduce Kimchi premiumCoinone, a major South Korean cryptocurrency exchange, listed USDT, a stablecoin pegged to the US dollar on the platform’s Korean won-denominated market on Thursday (local time). Its listing price was KRW 1,289.Tether Limited, the company behind USDT, asserts that their stablecoin is “backed 100% by Tether’s reserves.” These reserves comprise a variety of real-world assets such as U.S. Treasuries, overnight reverse repurchase agreements, corporate bonds and precious metals. According to CoinMarketCap, USDT’s market capitalization stands at $89 billion, ranking it third in the cryptocurrency market, just behind Bitcoin and Ethereum.Photo by DrawKit Illustrations on UnsplashFirst to list USDT/KRW trading pairDespite the significance of USDT in the cryptocurrency market, Korean exchange users have faced the limitation of not being able to purchase the stablecoin using Korean won, although these exchanges did offer markets denominated in USDT. This limitation has prompted Koreans to turn to foreign cryptocurrency services for acquiring USDT. With Coinone’s latest move, the platform has become the first to facilitate USDT/KRW trading among the nation’s five fiat-to-crypto Korean exchanges — Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, Korbit and Gopax.Regarding this development, Kwon O-hoon, Managing Partner at the law firm Cha and Kwon, told local news outlet Decenter that there seem to be no particular legal concerns with the crypto exchange’s engagement in USDT transactions. This perspective stems from the absence of stablecoin regulations in the country.Reducing the Kimchi premiumAccording to Decenter, crypto experts anticipate that the introduction of USDT/KRW trading will help in reducing the Kimchi premium, a term referring to the discrepancy in cryptocurrency prices on South Korean exchanges compared to those in foreign exchanges. For instance, according to data from CoinNess, the average price of BTC on Korean exchanges is around KRW 51,177,250. This is about 2.34% higher than its average price on foreign exchanges, which stands at KRW 50,005,909. This difference means that users on Korean exchanges need to pay an additional KRW 1,171,340 to buy one BTC, compared to what they would pay on international platforms. However, the newly added trading pair will streamline transactions between exchanges, making it simpler for investors to engage in arbitrage. This ease of transfer is expected to lead to more balanced pricing across different markets, reducing the Kimchi premium. In light of this development, Jo Dong-hyeon, CEO of blockchain company Undefined Labs, said various institutions and blockchain projects will likely find USDT increasingly useful as a store of value, given USDT facilitates easy transfers between different exchanges.
