Funding talent acquisition

The freshly acquired funds are earmarked for pivotal purposes, primarily focusing on bolstering talent acquisition and driving forward the development of Startale Labs' diverse product portfolio. Taking to the X social media platform, Astar Foundation Chief Operating Officer (COO) Shun Ishikawa confirmed that in light of the recent funding, Startale is hiring and it welcomes applicants to get in touch, particularly engineers.

Moreover, alongside the $3.5 million capital injection, Startale also drew attention to a strategic alliance with Sony Network Communications to embark on a blockchain venture. With these combined resources, Startale aims to accelerate its development trajectory.

Paul Ng, Executive Director of UOB Venture Management, emphasized the importance of real-world use cases in onboarding new users to Web3 technologies. Ng stated:

"We are excited to support Startale, who have demonstrated expertise and experience in building successful Web3 products, in their mission to bring billions of users into the Web3 ecosystem.”

Having made significant strides since its establishment in January 2023, Startale Labs has garnered support from these leading Asian enterprises within a remarkably short span. Sota Watanabe, CEO of Startale Labs, outlined the company's vision for the future, stating:

"With the funds raised, we aim to invest in product development and recruitment to create a truly representative Web3 company of Asia and beyond."

Through his X account, Watanabe expressed the intention that “we’re going to prove that Japanese startups can be successful in the world.”

Sony joint venture

An initial investment of $3.5 million by Sony in June of last year was followed in September by a collaboration between Sony Network Communications and Startale Labs, giving rise to the joint venture "Sony Network Communications Labs Pte. Ltd."

This venture is dedicated to developing a blockchain infrastructure aimed at underpinning global Web3 initiatives. The objective is to harness blockchain advancements to create compelling use cases that foster wider adoption of Web3 technology.

Sony Network Communications Labs is structured such that Sony Network Communications holds a 90% stake in the venture, with Startale Labs contributing the remaining 10%.

Startale Labs' recent funding infusion, coupled with strategic partnerships with industry giants, appears to be putting the blockchain startup firmly on the road towards driving innovation and playing its part in shaping the future of Web3 technology.

Uzbekistan’s New Private Bank Joins National Crypto Card Initiative

Uzbekistan’s New Private Bank Joins National Crypto Card InitiativeIn a step towards enhancing its cryptocurrency ecosystem, the Republic of Uzbekistan has given the green light to include another private bank in its ongoing national crypto card project. The development was announced through an official press release earlier this week by the National Agency of Perspective Projects (NAPP), the country’s regulatory authority for digital assets.Photo by engin akyurt on UnsplashBuilding upon a crypto frameworkUnder the provisions outlined by the Uzbekistan Ministry of Justice on December 30 of last year, the Special Regulatory Sandbox Regime was established. This unique framework empowers specific entities within Uzbekistan’s crypto sphere to provide specialized services. JSV Ravnaq Bank has now been registered as a member of this regime, enabling its active participation in the pilot phase of the nation’s crypto card project.Virtual bank cardThis initiative is poised to introduce a virtual bank card named “CRYPTO CARD — UzNEX.” The card’s standout feature is its ability to facilitate automatic fund addition to users’ primary accounts. This is achieved by swiftly converting crypto assets from a digital wallet on a partner crypto exchange platform.A vital aspect of the crypto card’s development lies in its compatibility testing with various financial systems, including the widely used Mastercard payment platform. According to NAPP’s statement, the participant bank within the special regulatory regime will be rigorously testing the integration of the automated banking system, crypto-exchange information system, bank processing center, and the MasterCard international payment system.December launchNotably, the addition of Ravnaq Bank marks the second entrant into the project, with Kapital Bank being the first participant approved in May. While Kapital Bank’s testing phase commenced at the end of June 2023, Ravnaq Bank is set to initiate its test launch by the end of October 2023. Both banks are expected to launch the full project by late December, in accordance with NAPP’s timeline.Beyond these private banks, the Special Regulatory Sandbox Regime also includes UZINFOCOM, a company authorized to develop NFT certificates based on distributed data registry technology.

Kazakhstan sets sights on 2024 expansion amid CBDC pilot success

Kazakhstan sets sights on 2024 expansion amid CBDC pilot successKazakhstan’s central bank digital currency (CBDC), the digital tenge, has completed a one-month pilot project, paving the way for significant advancements in business, regulation and technology in 2024.Photo by Nessi Gileva on UnsplashReal-world use through Onay cardThe National Bank of Kazakhstan (NBK) established the National Payment Corporation (NPK) in September. NPK is a dedicated entity that’s responsible for spearheading the launch and development of the digital tenge. At that time, the CBDC pilot phase had advanced to controlled environment use. Global exchange Binance has been actively involved with the project. It supported the pilot by way of its BNB Chain.During the pilot phase, the digital tenge played a pivotal role in providing free school lunches to children in Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city. The initiative utilized the local Onay card, initially designed for the transit system and transactions were facilitated by Kazpost, the Kazakh postal system operator.Local banking partnersNPC Chairman Binur Zhalenov became the first person to transact using the digital tenge in November. At the time, it was revealed that Eurasian Bank was one of the local banking participants on the project.Eurasian collaborated with Visa and Mastercard, alongside three other local banks, distributing plastic cards to focus group members. These cards empowered users to make both in-person and online purchases, with the added functionality of cash withdrawals from ATMs.Participating merchants were given the flexibility to accept digital tenge directly or convert them into “non-cash” tenge. The converted funds seamlessly integrated into existing point-of-sale (POS) and QR systems, demonstrating interoperability within and outside Kazakhstan. The success extended beyond local transactions, with further experiments involving cross-border payments via SWIFT, issuance of CBDC-backed stablecoins on platforms like Binance and the Kazakhstan Stock Exchange, tokenization of gold, value-added tax collection through smart contracts and the trial of a “move-to-earn” app.New objectivesWith an eye on the upcoming year, the National Bank of Kazakhstan and the National Payment Corporation (NPC) have set ambitious objectives. Plans include expanding the network of intermediary banks and advancing decentralized finance applications. A primary focus is on enabling offline transactions on a large scale to enhance financial inclusion in regions with limited internet connectivity.Anticipated developments also include increased participation in cross-border payment projects, such as Project mBridge, an experimental multi-CBDC platform being coordinated and developed by the central bank of central banks, the Bank for International Settlements. Regulatory and legislative goals are on the agenda, alongside efforts to enhance the security and processing speed of the digital tenge. While addressing privacy concerns, Zhalenov emphasized in interviews that the digital tenge will not be utilized for user surveillance. Previously, Zhalenov has also alluded to the versatility of the digital tenge due to its programmable nature, citing smart contracts in particular as having great potential. The successful pilot project and the ambitious plans for 2024 position Kazakhstan’s digital tenge as a promising development in the realm of CBDCs, showcasing the central Asian nation’s positive approach to innovation and financial inclusivity.

Bitget Launches Blockchain4Youth Project

Bitget Launches Blockchain4Youth ProjectSeychelles-headquartered crypto derivatives trading platform, Bitget, announced on Thursday the launch of a new corporate social responsibility (CSR) project. The initiative seizes upon an opportunity to execute on a public good while at the same time, benefiting the future prospects of the business itself alongside the overarching crypto space.Blockchain4Youth is a new initiative from the crypto business with the objective of “empowering and inspiring younger generations to use Web3 and crypto tools to create and engage in a decentralized space. ” With this goal, the trading platform believes that a blockchain future can be created.Photo by Jill Wellington on PexelYouth key to crypto adoptionWhile this is a CSR project, it’s easy to interpret it as a win/win. The future success of crypto lies with the younger demographic. They are the ones who are digitally native. They’re the ones that can more easily identify with truly digital money and digitally decentralized systems.Bitget seems to get this according to the statement it issued: “Bitget believes that a blockchain-based future is essential to building better products and tools to help people advance crypto adoption. The platform will be relying on the young generation to promote such ideas and will help them become proactive leaders.”This is telling as it demonstrates firstly that the Seychelles-based platform understands that the younger demographic represents its future customers. But it also clarifies that Bitget understands that future products need to be purpose built to meet the specific needs of that younger demographic.46% of millennials own cryptoIt appears that Bitget’s initiative is further motivated off the back of recent research it carried out. Released last month, that research study reveals that 46% of Millennial respondents said they owned cryptocurrencies, compared to 25% of Gen X-ers, 21% of Gen Z, and just 8% of Baby Boomers. The depth of the study extended to 255,000 survey responses received from respondents distributed across 26 countries, including places as diverse as the United States, Japan, China, Nigeria, Germany, Indonesia, and elsewhere. The study achieved responses per country of at least 10,000 respondents. The research also uncovered that “related statistics compiled on attitudes towards the regulation of digital assets indicate that each successive generation is more likely to factor in the attitudes of electoral candidates towards crypto regulation when casting their vote.”One of the study’s key findings is the following: “By 2030, all Gen Z members will be adults and the spread of blockchain technology by that time could lead to an increase in the percentage of cryptocurrency adopters across all generations. As such, the chances of the growth in acceptance of cryptocurrencies in the coming years are very high.”Broader industry involvementBitget intends to extend involvement in its Blockchain4Youth project beyond the company, with participation coming from other blockchain firms. The press release sets out that “the platform will also collaborate with other leading blockchain firms to incubate innovative projects by young entrepreneurs and host U30 (Under the age of 30) hackathons to identify the most promising ones.”The crypto derivatives platform is kicking things off later this month through a series of campus lectures in Thailand, Vietnam, and Taiwan covering the topic of Web3. As well as being open to collaborating with industry peers, the company also wants educators to take an active role in the initiative.
