Crypto Strategic Reserve

The U.S. president took to Truth Social, a social media platform owned by Trump Media & Technology Group, to state that “A U.S. Crypto Reserve will elevate this critical industry after years of corrupt attacks by the Biden administration.”

Trump added that an Executive Order (EO) that he had issued recently was related to digital assets, directing a recently-formed Presidential Working Group to move forward on the development of a Crypto Strategic Reserve. Trump went on to outline that this reserve would include crypto assets such as XRP, Solana (SOL) and Cardano (ADA).

The post fueled double-digit percentage increases for all three assets. However, it also had an impact on specific stocks listed on Asian markets.

Shares in Metaplanet, Japan’s first and as yet only Bitcoin treasury company, closed 21% higher in Tokyo on Monday. The stock surged from its previous trading day close of 3,310 yen to close at 4,010 on Monday.

Shares of Japan's Metaplanet closed up 21.15% on Monday, surging to 4,010 yen from the previous close of 3,310 yen within the first hour of trading upon opening. The company also announced on Monday that it had acquired an additional 156 BTC ($13.4 million) to expand its total holdings to 2,391 BTC.

Potential U.S. listing for Metaplanet

The company had some developments of its own that may have contributed to the rise in the Metaplanet share price. In a statement published by the company on March 3, it announced that it had purchased an additional 156 Bitcoin.

The latest tranche of Bitcoin was purchased at an average price of $85,890. This brings the company’s overall Bitcoin holding to 2,391 Bitcoin.

Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich posted on X that Metaplanet is “considering the best way to make Metaplanet shares more accessible to investors around the world.” Gerovich made that comment in the context of having explained that the firm was formally invited by the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Nasdaq to visit so that they could introduce their platforms.

While the Metaplanet CEO is not confirming a U.S. stock listing for the company, it appears that it is something that the firm is considering.

Boyaa stock price rise

Boyaa Interactive, a Chinese online gaming company that is also the largest publicly listed holder of Bitcoin in Asia, also saw its stock surge on Monday. The company’s stock, which is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, rose 23%, closing at HK$4.17. The company confirmed that over the weekend, it added an additional 100 Bitcoin to its treasury, bringing its overall Bitcoin holding to 3,350 BTC.

Beijing-headquartered OKG Tech, a blockchain technology firm, also experienced a surge in its Hong Kong-listed stock, which rose by over 42% on Monday.

Ki Young Ju, CEO of Seoul-headquartered on-chain analytics firm CryptoQuant, warned on X that the crypto market “is increasingly becoming a weapon of the United States.” He added that “coins serving U.S. national interests are likely to work against every country except the United States.”

Paxful’s Ray Youssef heads up Noones financial app startup

Paxful’s Ray Youssef heads up Noones financial app startupNoones, a financial communication app launched in 2023, has officially appointed Ray Youssef as its CEO with a visionary goal of reaching a billion daily active Bitcoin users within the next seven years.Empowering Global South financial freedomThis announcement aligns with Noones’ mission to empower financial freedom in the Global South by streamlining the movement of money, liberating users from traditional banking constraints. Youssef believes that “Africa alone has the potential to make NoOnes a trillion dollar company but when you factor in the rest of the global south the sky’s the limit.”Founded on the belief that peer-to-peer systems constitute the world’s only true free market and that Bitcoin represents the new global financial architecture, Noones seeks to uplift individuals in Africa, Latin America and Southeast Asia.Startups in the digital assets space tend to be more international in nature than in any other sector. According to the firm’s LinkedIn, Noones is headquartered in Dubai. Notwithstanding that, many of its team appear to be Estonia-based while its website’s terms of service specify Panama as being the relevant jurisdiction, making for a truly international setup.Photo by Arpit Rastogi on UnsplashMoving on from Paxful turbulenceYoussef, the former CEO of peer-to-peer crypto platform Paxful and a seasoned expert in strategic planning, product innovation, growth hacking and operations management, brings his wealth of experience to lead Noones. Youssef’s tenure at Paxful, where he played a pivotal role in the company’s success, underscores his ability to drive transformative change in the fintech industry. However, Youssef’s departure from Paxful in April, amidst a legal dispute with Co-Founder Artur Shaback, marked a turning point. Paxful unexpectedly closed its operations amid a broader trend in the industry. Youssef attributed Paxful’s closure to the legal action initiated by Shaback, alleging a pursuit of significant financial gains. Shaback countered, stating that the dispute arose from differences in business direction and governance, accusing Youssef of migrating Paxful’s assets to his new venture, Noones.Promoting prosperity through bitcoinDespite the turbulence at Paxful, Youssef remains resolute in his commitment to leveraging Bitcoin for social good. While Noones, with its focus on decentralized financial opportunities, requires a Know-Your-Customer (KYC) onboarding process, Youssef continues to champion Bitcoin as a tool for poverty eradication and empowerment in the Global South.Noones, under Youssef’s leadership, aspires to simplify financial transactions and provide decentralized, borderless opportunities to its users. Youssef envisions Bitcoin playing a crucial role in promoting prosperity in the Global South, with Noones aiming to create an interoperable pan-African clearing layer. This initiative aims to elevate intra-African trade, bringing it to levels comparable to intra-European trade. In a statement, Youssef expressed his confidence in the transformative power of Bitcoin, stating:”For the past 8 years, I have fought for financial sovereignty for the Global South. Finally, I am glad to be able to fulfil the mission I began almost a decade ago. I’m confident that Bitcoin will play a crucial role in promoting the prosperity of our continent, and I’m thrilled and privileged to contribute to the company’s ambition and growth.”

Pontem secures funding to pioneer Move-compatible apps

Singapore-based startup Pontem, a Web3 product development studio, has successfully raised $6 million in a recent funding round. Broad venture capital participationThe firm announced details of the funding round via a press release published on Thursday.  The round was co-led by Faction and Lightspeed Venture Partners. The financing includes participation from notable contributors such as Pantera Capital, Aptos Foundation, market maker Wintermute, Singaporean trading firm Altonomy, Shima Capital and Kraken Ventures. This latest capital infusion brings Pontem's total raised funds to $10.5 million, building upon the $4.5 million secured in June 2021 through a private token sale led by Mechanism Capital, Kenetic Capital, Delphi Ventures and Hong Kong’s Animoca Brands.Pepi Stojanovski on UnsplashExpanding Move utilityThe primary focus of the funds is to empower developers in creating applications that are compatible with both the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) and Move, expanding the utility of the Move programming language beyond its current usage on the Aptos and Sui blockchains. Move is a rust-derived programming language which was originally developed by Facebook with the intention of using it to power the Diem blockchain, prior to the company abandoning the project. It’s a platform-agnostic language designed for the writing of safe smart contracts. It distinguishes itself from the EVM's Solidity language by enhancing throughput through parallel processing. Pontem contends that Move is particularly appealing to Web2 developers from traditional finance and tech sectors due to its similarity to familiar static-type languages. Pontem envisions breaking the temporary vendor lock-in associated with the EVM, offering developers a versatile programming language that supports the security and scalability required for widespread adoption. Alejo Pinto, co-founder of Pontem, highlighted the objective of utilizing the capital influx to increase the usage of Move beyond the Aptos and Sui blockchains, providing dApp teams with a programming language that facilitates the addition of new features, promoting security and scalability. Pinto emphasized that Pontem seeks to address the vendor lock-in issue on Ethereum, enabling easier entry for Web2 developers and fostering their confidence in the decentralized space. Banafsheh Fathieh, Partner at Faction, praised Pontem's role in building critical primitives for the Move ecosystems. Pantera Capital Managing Partner Paul Veradittakit expressed excitement about investing in Pontem, recognizing the team's efforts in constructing essential financial and technical infrastructure to attract consumers and developers to the decentralized web. Lumio Layer 2The allocated capital is earmarked for developing Move Virtual Machine products on EVM-compatible blockchains like Ethereum. This includes Lumio, a Move-based Layer 2 solution which the company introduced in December. It operates as an optimistic rollup on Ethereum and leverages alternative Layer 1s like Aptos to process transactions. Pontem disclosed that products deployed on Aptos, such as the Pontem Wallet and Liquidswap DEX, have gained significant traction with 40,000 weekly active users and up to $1 million in daily volume. Looking ahead, Pontem envisions extending its support to the Solana Virtual Machine and other blockchain languages, underscoring its intention to provide a comprehensive development environment for decentralized applications. The funding secured in this round signifies a crucial step for the fledgling company in advancing the compatibility and accessibility of the Move programming language within the broader blockchain ecosystem.
