XRP primed for institutional adoption in Asia via tracker fund launch

Web3 & Enterprise·April 22, 2025, 8:36 AM

XRP, the native asset of the XRP Ledger (XRPL), a blockchain network developed by Ripple Labs, is destined for further institutional adoption in Asia due to the launch of the region’s first XRP tracker fund.

Crypto-focused institutional asset manager HashKey Capital recently announced the launch of its HashKey XRP Tracker Fund, which has been devised to track the performance of what is the world’s fourth-largest crypto asset by market cap, after Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH) and U.S. dollar stablecoin Tether (USDT).

Enabling institutional access

The fund enables investors to gain exposure to XRP without having to take direct ownership and custody of the digital asset. Bitcoin and Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have become popular in a number of markets, including the United States, as they allow institutional investors to gain exposure to these digital assets where they may have been uncomfortable with direct ownership due to concerns around custody and counterparty risk or regulatory concerns.

According to HashKey’s press release, investors can buy into the fund through cash or in-kind subscription and subscribe or redeem shares monthly. The fund will be measured and compared against a benchmark index provided by CF Benchmarks, a provider of crypto-related indices.

HashKey Partner Vivien Wong acknowledged the potential that XRP has in the market, stating:

“XRP stands out as one of the most innovative cryptocurrencies in today’s market, attracting global enterprises who use it to transact, tokenize, and store value.”

She added that the new fund simplifies access to XRP within the region, while catering to a growing demand for investment opportunities related to digital assets.

Potential ETF fund conversion

This marks HashKey’s third product that tracks digital asset pricing, with the company having launched both Bitcoin and Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs) previously. On X, HashKey Capital outlined that the XRP Tracker Fund could potentially evolve into a fully fledged ETF, subject to regulatory approval, within the next 1-2 years.

The new fund, which was launched on April 18, also incorporates a strategic partnership with XRP developer Ripple Labs. In what is understood to be the first of a number of collaborations, Ripple will fulfill the role of being the fund’s anchor investor.

Ripple’s Managing Director for the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, Fiona Murray, cited the development as proof that institutional adoption of digital assets continues to go from strength to strength.

Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse stated last month that he expects a number of spot XRP ETFs to be approved in the United States later this year. Earlier in March, analysts at American investment bank JPMorgan had estimated that spot XRP ETF approval in the U.S. could result in net inflows of $8 billion into such products.

At the time of writing, XRP was trading at $2.09. The asset has increased in price by 300% over the course of the past 12 months, largely due to a changing regulatory environment in the United States and optimism that a settlement can be reached to end its multi-year legal battle with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Hong Kong regulators signal embrace of spot crypto ETFs

Hong Kong regulators signal embrace of spot crypto ETFsHong Kong has signaled its readiness to usher in spot crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs), as the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) jointly announced on Friday that they are prepared to accept applications for such funds.Photo by Oskar Kadaksoo on UnsplashUpdated virtual asset-related policyIn a set of circulars released, a joint circular representing both regulators and a separate circular published by the SFC, they outlined the updated policy for intermediaries engaging in virtual asset-related activities. The SFC, responsible for overseeing financial markets in Hong Kong, expressed its openness to applications for the authorization of funds with exposure to virtual assets, specifically mentioning virtual asset spot exchange-traded funds (VA spot ETFs).This move expands beyond the existing crypto futures ETFs, demonstrating Hong Kong’s commitment to adapting its regulatory landscape to the evolving crypto market. It also builds on positive commentary made by SFC CEO Julia Leung on the subject last month. Leung stated that the regulator was open to the notion of retail participation in spot crypto ETFs in Hong Kong.Leung stated:“We welcome proposals using innovative technology that boosts efficiency and customer experience. We’re happy to give it a try as long as new risks are addressed. Our approach is consistent regardless of the asset.”Use of license platformsFriday’s SFC circular emphasized that transactions conducted by these ETFs must occur through SFC-licensed crypto platforms or authorized financial institutions. The SFC outlined that both in-kind and in-cash subscription and redemption methods are permissible for SFC-authorized spot VA ETFs, providing flexibility in fund management.Custody requirements were also addressed, with the SFC specifying that the trustee or custodian must delegate its crypto custody function exclusively to an SFC-licensed Virtual Asset Trading Platform (VATP) or entities meeting the crypto custody standards set by the HKMA.Industry responseThese latest circulars from the regulators have prompted a response from the industry. The Hong Kong Stock Exchange has reacted, welcoming the announcement. It believes that such a move would serve to strengthen Hong Kong’s position as a digital asset hub in the region. The exchange already lists a number of crypto futures ETFs, with multinational investment bank UBS having recently extended access to these products to its Hong Kong-based high-net-worth clients. While the regulatory landscape in the United States in 2023 has proven to be hostile, one very positive development appears to be ongoing work towards spot bitcoin ETF approval. Although still a matter of speculation, many industry commentators believe that approval will come through on Jan. 10. The advent of spot bitcoin and crypto ETFs in both eastern and western markets would likely make for an extremely bullish 2024 for the industry.Hong Kong’s move towards spot crypto ETFs aligns with its proactive stance in adapting to the rapidly evolving crypto landscape. The regulatory framework, as outlined in the circulars, reflects a balance between fostering innovation and ensuring investor protection. The city’s financial authorities have taken a comprehensive approach to review and update policies, once again signaling their ongoing commitment to embracing the growing role of virtual assets in the financial world.

ZkLink Snags $10M Funding Ahead of Mainnet Launch

ZkLink Snags $10M Funding Ahead of Mainnet LaunchZkLink, a layer 2 multi-chain blockchain network project based out of Singapore, has secured $10 million in funding in advance of its mainnet launch which is scheduled for Q3, 2023.Photo by Markus Winkler on UnsplashStrategic funding roundThe Singaporean project offers a blockchain infrastructure layer that enables the ability to trade digital assets across various disparate blockchain networks. Coinbase Ventures, the investment arm of US cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, focuses its attention on early-stage cryptocurrency and blockchain projects. That’s precisely why it has now participated in a $10 million investment in the Singaporean start-up, given that the ZkLink network doesn’t launch on mainnet for a number of months yet. Other participants in the funding round included Ascensive Assets, SIG DTI, BigBrain Holdings, Efficient Frontier, among others. In posting news of the funding to social media, ZkLink confirmed that the fresh strategic funding round has brought total funding to date to $18.5 million. “The funds raised take zkLink a step further to envision a multi-chain future with unified liquidity and seamless multi-chain user experience while remaining fully trustless and self-custodial,” the project stated. Its previous $8.5 million funding round was completed in October 2021. Among the early investors on that occasion were Arrington Capital, DeFi Alliance, Huobi Ventures, Ascensive Assets, Morningstar Ventures, GSR, Marshland Capital, Skynet Trading, ZBS Capital, and others. New York-based blockchain financing and investment platform, Republic Crypto, was the lead investor at that time.Bridging assets securely acrossZkLink uses zero knowledge technology in order to connect various layer one and layer two networks. A zero knowledge proof is the core innovation that the approach relies upon, with the proof presenting as a cryptographic technique that ensures that no data is revealed during a transaction, save for the exchange of some known value already evident to both prover and verifier. That approach makes for efficient cross-chain bridging, guaranteeing strong security without external trust assumptions. By connecting various layer one and layer two networks, zkLink claims that it empowers the next generation of decentralized trading products.Developers can access ZkLink application programming interfaces (APIs) in order to create order book decentralized exchanges (DEXs), NFT marketplaces, among other use cases. The project is harnessing zero knowledge technology to abstract away all the complexity of multi-chain trading while keeping it ultra secure and true to the ethos of crypto.A multi-chain futureWith blockchain networks being highly fragmented, the concept of a multi-chain future is one that is being increasingly embraced within the crypto space. Various projects have been launched in an effort to effect such a scenario. However, the first generation of bridging solutions have proven to be weak from a security perspective. Zero knowledge technology is seen as a potential solution to this issue.Effecting a seamless multi-chain will also bring about greater efficiencies. As a case in point, currently USDT-Ethereum and USDT-Solana exist as separate assets on distinct blockchains representing the very same USDT stablecoin. With seamless bridging, there would be no need for the duplication. In recent days, the ZkLink project team has been busy working on safety features related to securing decentralized finance protocols. In a press release associated with that work, ZkLink Co-Founder Vince Lang stated: “It is unacceptable that billions of dollars are lost each year due to custody fraud or cross-chain bridge exploits, so we encourage other DeFi protocols to conduct the same test to prove self-custody of user’s funds.”

QCP Trading takes significant step towards full licensing in Singapore

QCP Trading, the trading arm of Singaporean crypto market maker and broker dealer QCP Group, has taken a significant step towards full licensing in Singapore, having been awarded in-principle approval (IPA) for a Major Payment Institution (MPI) license by local regulator, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). Regulated spot tradingIn a press release published by PR Newswire on behalf of QCP Trading Pte. Ltd. on Nov. 11, the company outlined further details on the receipt of the preliminary license. The company confirmed that the IPA represents an “essential step towards full licensing,” enabling it to prepare to offer regulated spot trading service facilities relative to digital payment tokens. QCP Trading is geared towards facilitating a broad range of crypto spot trading, including the trading of stablecoins and major digital asset tokens. The company offers on/off ramps into and out of cryptocurrency positions via multiple fiat currencies. Photo by Guo Xin Goh on UnsplashOperational expansionDarius Sit, founder of QCP Trading, commented on the development, stating that as the firm continues its pursuit of a full trading license, the focus remains on supporting Singapore’s reputation as a leader in digital asset regulation. Sit added that the company is proud of its “ability to remain agile and responsive to both global and local market conditions,” suggesting that this approach is the key to success in the rapidly evolving crypto sector. QCP Trading intends to continue to build a local team in Singapore and with that it is hiring in order to enable operational expansion. Melvin Deng, the company’s CEO, said that the firm is aiming “to champion robust governance frameworks,” and that its “early recognition of the critical role of regulation has proven to be a strategic foresight." Global expansionThe QCP Group appears to be pursuing a global expansion strategy as back in May, group company QCP Capital received IPA for regulated digital asset trading activities from the Financial Services Regulatory Authority (FSRA), the regulator within the Abu Dhabi Global Markets economic zone in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). In doing so, it became the first Singapore-headquartered crypto broker and market maker to receive preliminary approval within the Middle East region. At that point, QCP had 70 employees, with plans to relocate some of them to Abu Dhabi. In the lead-up to that IPA licensing award in Abu Dhabi, QCP had partnered with Further Ventures as part of its efforts in expanding into the Middle Eastern market. On Nov. 11, QCP Capital put out a warning via its Telegram channel, informing market participants that given the rise in the unit price of Bitcoin in recent days, it is necessary to be mindful of the risk of pullbacks, which will be required in order to account for the use of leverage within the market. In recent weeks, Fly Wing Technologies, a subsidiary of cryptocurrency service provider Matrixport, and the Singaporean subsidiary of American crypto exchange Gemini have received IPA approval with respect to MPI licensing in Singapore. At the beginning of September, crypto exchange OKX received full MPI approval.
