Partnership

notice published on the website of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government on July 20 reported on the Conflux Tree Graph Technology and Ecological Development Conference, which was held in Shanghai over three days from July 18 to July 20. Over the course of the three-day event, the project announced a partnership with AnchorX, a Hong Kong-based fintech firm specializing in stablecoins, and Shenzhen-based Eastcompeace Technology.

The purpose of the initiative is to develop a stablecoin pegged to the offshore yuan (CNH), the version of China’s currency that circulates outside the mainland. The report outlined that in recent years, stablecoins and tokenized real-world assets (RWAs) have come to global attention.

Belt & Road Initiative

Given this backdrop, it was outlined that “creating an independent and controllable high-performance public chain system” could be of great benefit to China and its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which sets out to develop infrastructure across 150 countries to facilitate trade with China.

This is not the first point at which AnchorX has collaborated with Conflux. Back in February, the company received in-principle approval from the Astana Financial Services Authority (AFSA) in Kazakhstan to issue CNH-pegged stablecoins. Growing bilateral trade between Kazakhstan and China was cited as the rationale behind the license, given the need for cross-border payments.

At the time, it was outlined that the AxCNH yuan-pegged stablecoin would be issued on the Conflux blockchain. It’s unclear if this same stablecoin is the focus of this latest development or whether an entirely new yuan-pegged stablecoin will be issued.

AnchorX collaborated with Conflux in 2024 to bring about the issuance of AxHKD, a Hong Kong dollar-pegged stablecoin. The stablecoin runs on the Conflux blockchain, with the stablecoin issuer using OKLink Trust as its custodian.

TokenPocket, a multi-chain crypto wallet project, also outlined on X on July 21 that it too is involved in the partnership with Conflux and AnchorX. The project outlined that it will support the growth of stablecoin adoption, the development of cross-border payment solutions and the promotion of tokenized RWAs in international markets through the collaboration.

Pilot projects

TokenPocket went on to explain that the companies plan to launch pilot projects in Central Asia, Southeast Asia and other regions, building “a compliant, secure, and innovative fintech framework to boost the role of the Conflux ecosystem as critical infrastructure for cross-border trade.”

It was revealed at the conference that the mainnet release of Conflux 3.0 will occur in August. With the implementation of further optimized execution modules, the project expects 3.0 to result in a network throughput of 15,000 transactions per second (TPS).

These developments over the course of the weekend have had an impact on the unit price of Conflux’s native token, CFX. On July 19, the token was trading at around $0.1043. According to CoinMarketCap data, at the time of writing, it’s trading at $0.2232, a 2.58% increase over the past day.

Matrixport Forecasts Bitcoin Bull Market Breather Ahead

Matrixport Forecasts Bitcoin Bull Market Breather AheadMatrixport, the Singapore-headquartered digital asset financial services provider, has reported a significant surge in its Bitcoin Greed & Fear Index (GFI) over the past week.Photo by Karolina Grabowska on PexelsBitcoin Greed & Fear Index (GFI)The index, which tracks market sentiments, has skyrocketed from below 10% to a staggering 93%. Such a rapid increase indicates a prevailing sense of greed and excessive optimism among Bitcoin investors. As a result, industry experts are suggesting that a breather in the ongoing Bitcoin rally may be on the cards.Markus Thielen, the Head of Research and Strategy at Matrixport, has advised short-term traders to consider capitalizing on their gains given the exuberant levels recorded by the Bitcoin Greed & Fear Index. Historical analysis reveals that readings above 90% have often signaled interim tops in Bitcoin’s price, while readings below 10% have preceded notable price rallies.Upward movement favorableDespite the current high reading, the 21-day simple moving average of the index remains below the critical 90% mark. This implies that the overall trajectory for Bitcoin still favors upward movement. Thielen points out that the rising 21-day moving average indicates the potential for further upside once the current phase of exuberance subsides, allowing for consolidation in the market.Chart analysts share an optimistic view of Bitcoin’s future, with some predicting a potential rally towards the $35,000 mark and beyond. Josh Olszewicz, Head of Research at digital asset investment firm Valkyrie, highlights a falling wedge setup in Bitcoin’s recent price action. The successful bounce off the support level, combined with the completion of the falling wedge pattern, has heightened expectations for a move towards the mid-$30,000 range. Olszewicz does caution that significant resistance may arise in that zone, likely leading to a subsequent period of re-consolidation before any further upward progress can be made.In recent weeks, Bitcoin experienced a pullback from its mid-April high of $31,000, eventually finding support around the $25,200 level earlier this month. This pullback, often referred to as a “throwback,” historically acts as a catalyst for price rallies, as has been evident in the past few days.Ether gain potentialWhile Bitcoin’s rally has been impressive, Ether (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, has seen a gain of 15.9% since last Thursday. However, Ether’s GFI index has yet to reach the 90% threshold, indicating potential room for further growth while Bitcoin takes a breather.Matrixport’s Bitcoin Greed & Fear Index has surged to an astonishing 93%, signaling heightened levels of greed and optimism among Bitcoin investors. Traders are advised to consider securing their gains as the index reaches exuberant levels.Nonetheless, the rising 21-day moving average suggests the potential for Bitcoin’s upward momentum to continue following a period of consolidation. At the time of writing, Bitcoin is trading around $31,200, based on CoinGecko data. Going into the weekend, that’s demonstrating continued growth. Meanwhile, Ether shows promising performance, with potential for further growth.

Key appointment sees Turkey’s central bank enhance crypto expertise

Key appointment sees Turkey’s central bank enhance crypto expertiseTurkey’s President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has taken a step in integrating blockchain and cryptocurrency expertise into the nation’s monetary policy by appointing Professor Fatma Ozkul to the central bank’s rate-setting committee.Photo by Engin Yapici on UnsplashIncorporating digital financial knowledgeThis decision, which became effective on Saturday, marks a significant move towards incorporating digital financial knowledge within the economic framework of Turkey. As part of Turkey’s economic strategy, President Erdogan has been restructuring the economic management team since his victory in the May general election. This reshuffling included the appointment of ex-Goldman Sachs banker Hafize Gaye Erkan as the central bank’s governor in June. That appointment led to a series of policy rate increases, totaling 3,400 basis points, bringing the rate to 42.5%. Further changes in the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) occurred in July, reinforcing the trajectory of monetary tightening.Crypto credentialsProfessor Fatma Ozkul, a lecturer at Istanbul’s Marmara University, joins the MPC with a primary focus on accounting, finance and auditing. Notably, she brings expertise in blockchain technology and crypto assets, having conducted courses on these subjects. Her recent work has delved into the implications of blockchain and crypto assets on finance, culminating in the publication of a book on crypto asset accounting in 2022.While Ozkul’s appointment may not immediately alter the current monetary policy direction, it reflects an understanding of the need to incorporate digital financial tools when formulating economic and monetary policy. Her extensive knowledge in digital finance is expected to contribute significantly to the process of setting benchmark interest rates, a critical instrument in controlling inflation within Turkey.President Erdogan’s emphasis on digital banking aligns with Turkey’s proactive steps in this direction. The central bank introduced a digital Turkish lira collaboration platform in 2021 and successfully tested digital lira transactions in late 2022. Additionally, the government is anticipated to submit a draft law regulating crypto assets in the coming year.Crypto adoptionThe political and economic climate in Turkey has shown a growing interest in cryptocurrencies, particularly Bitcoin. Chainalysis, a blockchain analytics company, reports that Turkey recorded nearly $170 billion worth of cryptocurrency transactions between July 2022 and June 2023, ranking fourth globally in terms of raw transaction volumes.A report by KuCoin earlier this year identified a noteworthy increase in the overall number of crypto investors in Turkey over the course of the past 18 months. That growth in adoption was found to be youth-driven. The importance of the Turkish market within the crypto sector is further evidenced by the recent revelation that the Turkish Lira is the most dominant fiat trading pair on leading global crypto exchange Binance. In response to this surge, the Turkish government has been working on cryptocurrency regulations, focusing on licensing and taxes. This regulatory move aims to remove Turkey’s name from the Financial Action Task Force’s “gray list” and align the country with global financial norms. As Professor Ozkul assumes her role, her expertise and input may well play a pivotal part in shaping Turkey’s evolving position and approach where digital assets, blockchain and cryptocurrencies are concerned.

HashKey Capital and FTSE Russell introduce crypto index suite

HashKey Capital, a Singapore-based crypto fund manager, and FTSE Russell, a subsidiary of the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG), have collaboratively launched a series of indices designed to track cryptocurrencies. Three indicesRevealed on the FTSE Russell website on Wednesday, these three indices provide traders with the ability to monitor diversified baskets of digital assets aligned with various investment strategies. They cater to nuanced preferences across different crypto segments and market capitalizations. The flagship index in this suite is the FTSE Custom Digital Asset Top 20 Index, tracking the top 20 crypto assets based on market capitalization. This index is positioned to accurately reflect more than 90% of the overall performance of the digital asset market, offering investors insights into the dynamics of the most significant players in the crypto space.Photo by Markus Winkler on UnsplashFocus on infrastructure and application layerBeyond tracking market capitalization leaders, the suite includes indices with a specific focus on the crypto ecosystem's infrastructure layer (FTSE Custom Digital Asset Infrastructure Index) and application functionalities (FTSE Custom Digital Asset Application Index). One of them, the infrastructure index, zeroes in on digital assets forming the infrastructure layer, including smart contract platforms, protocol interoperability and distributed computation and storage. Meanwhile, the FTSE Custom Digital Asset Application Index concentrates on digital assets associated with application functionalities, such as those linked to staking instruments and decentralized finance. From Wednesday, these indices have been made accessible on the FTSE Russell website, with plans for future availability through major data providers like Bloomberg, Factset, LSEG Data & Analytics, Morningstar and S&P Capital IQ. U.S. ETF approvalThe introduction of these indices follows the recent milestone approval by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of spot bitcoin ETFs in the United States. It’s likely that the milestone ETF approval in the largest capital market is having a knock-on effect, proving to be a catalyst for other such offerings implicating the intertwining of crypto and traditional finance on an international basis. These products offer investors a more accessible entry point into the crypto market's largest asset, currently boasting a market capitalization of approximately $780 billion. Industry watchers anticipate the potential approval of a U.S. spot ether ETF later in 2024, with the SEC expected to make rulings on proposed funds by May. Deng Chao, managing director of HashKey Capital, noted a significant surge in demand from investors seeking to diversify their portfolios beyond established cryptocurrencies. This move aligns with broader market trends, as investors increasingly explore opportunities in diverse crypto assets. Notably, these index launches follow FTSE Russell's partnership with Grayscale Investments in October, aimed at enhancing crypto diversification. The earlier collaboration focused on various crypto sectors, including currencies, smart contract platforms, financials, consumer and culture and utilities and services. This development comes on the heels of HashKey Group, the Hong Kong-headquartered parent company of HashKey Capital, securing $100 million in a Series A funding round at a $1.2 billion valuation. OKX Ventures participated in the funding round, signaling strong support for HashKey Group's plans to accelerate product diversification in its Hong Kong business and drive compliant and innovative development globally.
