India’s Maharashtra weighs tokenizing state assets to fund infrastructure

September 11, 2026, 3:59 PM
India’s Maharashtra state is considering tokenizing state-owned assets to raise funds for new infrastructure projects, with power transmission infrastructure emerging as a central focus, CoinDesk reported. Transmission lines generate ongoing fee income as they move electricity across the grid, but the large amount of capital invested in existing facilities is tied up and difficult to redirect to new projects. Against that backdrop, Maharashtra plans to tokenize 40% to 50% of its transmission infrastructure, distribute part of the revenue to investors, and secure funding through token sales for the state government. The funds would be used to build new transmission lines, expand solar power generation, construct energy storage facilities, and increase grid capacity. Asset tokenization for holdings beyond power infrastructure, including real estate, is also under review, according to CoinDesk.
