Aptos charts success in South Korea through bridging Web2 and Web3

Web3 & Enterprise·November 15, 2023, 6:59 AM

Aptos, a major layer 1 blockchain network developed by the experts behind Meta’s canceled stablecoin payment system Diem, is growing in South Korea. In a recent Aptos Day conference held at the Hashed Lounge in Seoul, the Aptos team shared its vision for developing its ecosystem in Korea and attracting users by actively bringing content from Web2 to Web3, instead of simply focusing on cultivating a Web3-only ecosystem.

David Wolinsky, a software engineer at Aptos and a former developer at Facebook, presented Aptos’ key advantages and achievements since its launch last year and outlined the blockchain’s future plans for growth.

High-speed Web3 powerhouse

In particular, he highlighted Aptos’ high compatibility with social media, its solid security framework built with the Move programming language and a rapid processing speed of up to 200,000 transactions per second (TPS) — with a time to finality (TTF) of less than one second. Thanks to this impressive speed, Wolinsky explained, lots of projects have onboarded the network, which is anticipated to grow into a bigger ecosystem with more decentralized applications (dApps).

Aptos has also carried out over 300 million transactions since its launch in October of last year, creating seven million unique addresses. Just two months following its launch, there were already over 200 projects on the blockchain. Aptos could thus play a significant role in revolutionizing Web3, which is currently dominated by the Ethereum virtual machine (EVM).

Facilitating the transition from Web2 to Web3

To grow the ecosystem further, Wolinsky emphasized the importance of bringing Web2 users to Web3 in an efficient and seamless manner. Aptos aims to achieve this by facilitating the creation of Aptos-based wallets through integration with platforms like Facebook, X (formerly Twitter) and Google, allowing users to enjoy various dApps.

Wolinsky also noted that Aptos uses Move — an open-source programming language developed by Facebook for writing smart contracts on the Diem blockchain — which is designed to be developer-friendly, employing similar mechanisms that developers generally use to build applications on Web2. This language can attract not only Web2 users but also Web2 developers who are transitioning to Web3 without worrying about the complexity of the process. Aptos argues that Move is more secure than EVM’s Solidity language.

Positive prospects in Korea

Aptos also regards Korea as a key market for growth, as Korean developers are actively contributing to the Aptos ecosystem and providing helpful feedback. The blockchain disclosed that as of Q3 this year, Korea has 13 Aptos validators — second only after the U.S., which has 14.

Christie Lee, Head of Business Development and Partnerships in Korea at Aptos, argued that Korea is innovating the most at the larger corporate level while also contributing to the ecosystem. Lots of endeavors are playing out in the Korean market, she said, as regulatory restrictions in fields like gaming, entertainment, finance and more are starting to loosen.

She also added that the Korean market is not only driven by innovation from large companies but also by small developers who can contribute to the ecosystem, noting that the market is a favorable environment for developers to thrive. In addition, Korean users are sensitive to trends and adept at incorporating technology, which would allow them to quickly adopt Web3 culture.

Subreddit Token Price Slide Following Surge

Subreddit Token Price Slide Following SurgeReddit’s subreddit community tokens, Moon and Brick, having experienced a remarkable surge in prices last week fueled by a significant increase in trading volume, have taken a downward trajectory, plummeting in price.Photo by Mike Petrucci on UnsplashCrypto.com token listingThe Moon token, associated with Reddit’s r/CryptoCurrency community boasting over 6.5 million members, shot up from approximately $0.09 to nearly $0.58 on July 19, just after Singapore trading platform Crypto.com listed the token.Concurrently, trading volume spiked to around $3 million on Wednesday, marking an impressive boost.Similarly, the Fortnite subreddit community token, Brick, which Crypto.com distributes as a reward to contributors of r/Fortnite, also witnessed a substantial price surge. The token’s value surged from $0.01 on July 17 to approximately $0.10 on July 19, according to data from CoinGecko.Surge acknowledgedIn response to the sudden price surges, Crypto.com released a note early on Monday, acknowledging the surge both tokens had experienced recently. However, in a swift turn of events, both tokens experienced a significant downturn in the past 24 hours, with their prices plummeting by over 20%.As of midday (ET) on Monday, Moon was trading at $0.33, while Brick was valued just under $0.05, as reported by CoinGecko data. Moreover, trading volumes for both tokens have significantly contracted during this period of volatility. Moon’s volume shrank from over $1 million on July 23 to approximately $200,000 on Monday. On the other hand, Brick’s volume saw an even more drastic decrease, falling from approximately $210,000 on July 23 to a mere $26,000 on Monday.Terms of service changeMarket analysts speculate that the recent change in Reddit’s Terms of Service might have been the catalyst for the initial price increases. Reddit’s alteration of its Terms of Service on July 16 to permit users to trade community tokens and avatars potentially triggered the surge in token prices. It appears that Web2 centralized virtual goods such as coins and awards are making way for tradable Web3 community points.Speculating on the token price surge, Bobby Ong, the Co-Founder and COO of Malaysia-headquartered cryptocurrency data aggregator CoinGecko, wrote via Twitter last week: “Both tokens increased at the speculation of the changes coming at Reddit. No one knows exactly what is happening but Reddit deprecating Web2 Coins & Awards while allowing trading of their Web3 CPs could be something to monitor in the coming months.”Despite the recent downturn, the overall crypto space remains highly dynamic and unpredictable. Events such as the listing of tokens on prominent trading platforms can cause rapid price fluctuations. As always, that scenario makes it essential for investors to approach these assets with caution. While Moon and Brick may have encountered a sharp decline, the cryptocurrency market, in general, has proven its resilience and ability to rebound with Bitcoin currently holding a unit price of $29,125. As the market continues to evolve and gain wider acceptance, investors will need to continue to exercise caution and consider the volatility inherent in digital assets.

Bitdeer sets out mining chip roadmap

Singapore-headquartered Bitcoin mining company Bitdeer has outlined a roadmap of chip development which will culminate in the introduction of its most energy efficient mining chip to date, the “SEAL04” chip. According to a press release published by the company on June 6, the company outlined that it wanted to be transparent in demonstrating its plans over the short to medium term in terms of research and development and technological advancement.Photo by Michael Förtsch on UnsplashIterative progressionThe starting point for its roadmap is the SEAL01 chip, which the company introduced in Q1 2024. That mining chip was engineered using a four-nanometer process technology. It was developed in collaboration with a semiconductor fabricator albeit that the company has not disclosed the identity of that fabricator. That chip weighed in at 18.1 Joules/Terahash (J/TH). The SEAL01 represents the company’s first release relative to its SEALMINER technology.  Bitdeer feels that providing guidelines for technology releases will better inform market participants, and that’s important given that uncertainty creates a major difficulty for those operating in the Bitcoin mining space.  With that, Bitdeer is projecting a Q3 2024 release for its SEAL02 miner, which will clock up between 15 and 16.5J/TH. SEAL03 is scheduled for Q4 2024, with an efficiency boost taking it to between 11 and 12J/TH. Finally, the SEAL04 is scheduled for release in Q2 2025. That chip is expected to have an energy efficiency range as low as 5.5-6J/TH. The two most critical factors for Bitcoin miners to stay competitive include the cost of energy and the level of energy efficiency achieved by the mining equipment that is being used. It’s believed that the roadmap will help in managing miners’ expectations relative to technological advancement.  Gearing up for a post-halving mining environmentTo develop the SEALMINER equipment series, Bitdeer outlined last March that it had “assembled an international team of professional engineers specializing in chip design, firmware, and hardware engineering.” At that time, the company suggested that the new range of mining equipment would allow it to assist the Bitcoin mining community “in seizing opportunities following the 2024 halving event.” Alongside its chip development roadmap, the company came to the industry’s attention earlier this week with stablecoin issuer Tether acquiring a 25% stake in the Singaporean mining equipment developer, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). This acquisition makes Tether the second-largest shareholder in Bitdeer, behind Victory Courage Ltd., which is registered to Bitdeer CEO Jihan Wu. Wu, who co-founded Bitdeer and served as CEO of ASIC manufacturer Bitmain previously, was appointed as CEO of Bitdeer in January. The appointment was made so that Wu could oversee what was expected to be a period of rapid growth at the company. In the June 6 SEC filing, Tether Holdings Limited disclosed control over 23,587,360 BTDR shares. This significant increase in holdings stems from a private placement deal closed with Bitdeer last week, enabling the Bitcoin miner to secure $100 million in financing. The deal also includes a warrant allowing Tether to purchase up to 5,000,000 additional shares at $10.00 each over the course of the next year. Bitdeer plans to use the raised funds to expand its data centers, develop ASIC-based mining rigs and support other general corporate purposes.

Korbit relists blockchain gaming token WEMIX

Korbit relists blockchain gaming token WEMIXKorbit, a major fiat-to-cryptocurrency exchange in South Korea, is relisting WEMIX, a cryptocurrency issued by blockchain gaming company Wemade. Korbit’s decision follows in the footsteps of its local competitors, Coinone and Gopax, who have also recently reinstated WEMIX. The WEMIX token is used to pay transaction fees, stake and vote on governance proposals.Starting at 1:00 a.m. UTC on Dec. 7, Korbit users gained the ability to create a WEMIX wallet and deposit the token on the exchange. Trading and withdrawals of WEMIX will be enabled at 3:00 p.m. UTC on the same day.The Korbit exchange only accepts WEMIX deposits originating from the Wemix network. Deposits of WEMIX sent from other blockchain networks, including BNB Beacon Chain, Ethereum and Klaytn, may be processed improperly and carry the risk of becoming irretrievable.Photo by Asa E-K on UnsplashDecision reversal and underlying rationalesOver a year ago, the Digital Asset eXchange Alliance (DAXA), a coalition of the five Korean fiat-to-crypto exchanges — Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, Korbit and Gopax — collectively decided to delist WEMIX from all their platforms. This decision was based on several concerns, including unreliable disclosure of the token’s circulating supply, provision of inadequate and misleading information to investors and inconsistencies in the data provided during the explanation period. These issues collectively eroded trust in the company. However, Korbit has determined that the previously identified issues with WEMIX have been addressed. The exchange observed that the circulating supply of WEMIX has been reduced to a level that aligns with the schedule initially submitted to DAXA. The launch of the WEMIX mainnet rectified the discrepancy where the circulating supply displayed on crypto data platforms like CoinMarketCap was twice the actual figure. Additionally, the collateral that Wemade had deposited in decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol Kokoa Finance has been recovered. The crypto trading platform also believes that Wemade has resolved the problem of providing misleading information to investors by making corrections to its third-quarter earnings report.Regarding data fallacies, Korbit holds the view that the game publisher has taken steps to address the inaccuracies in the data previously provided to the alliance. These efforts to reduce uncertainty and fulfill disclosure responsibilities include several measures: Wemade now live-updates the circulating supply of WEMIX and other pertinent details on its official blog. The gaming company has also entrusted the management of its non-circulating WEMIX supply to Ceffu, the sole institutional custodian for Binance, a global crypto exchange. Furthermore, Wemade now makes announcements about token movements whenever they occur.Restrictions imposed on GopaxMeanwhile, Korbit stated its commitment to complying with voluntary regulations and common listing guidelines established between DAXA members. This statement is particularly noteworthy in light of the recent developments with Gopax. Gopax faced the three-month suspension of its voting rights from DAXA, following the relisting of WEMIX.
