The ‘BTC Next’ fund

Wang Fang, the founder of Linekong, took to X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday to announce the establishment of the “BTC Next” fund. The fund’s primary goal is to fast-track the development of emerging projects within the Bitcoin ecosystem, spanning a wide range of areas, including asset issuance protocols, trading markets, expansion initiatives, virtual machines, NFT’s real-world asset (RWA) and GameFi.

As part of its initial efforts, Linekong Interactive plans to actively engage in research and investment activities within the Bitcoin network’s ecological assets. The firm will also make its investment portfolios publicly available, enabling transparent visibility into its chosen projects within the Bitcoin ecosystem.

Building on Bitcoin

The idea of building out Web3 offerings on the Bitcoin network is one that has attracted considerable debate in recent years. Traditionally, Bitcoin has been recognized for its limited programmability in comparison to newer blockchains like Ethereum.

Many see that as a feature and benefit. For the most part, Bitcoin has remained largely unchanged since its inception in 2008. A myriad of alternative blockchain projects started to emerge due to the frustrations of developers in wanting to have greater programmability options.

However, the past year has seen significant developments within the Bitcoin ecosystem, thanks to the introduction of novel data storage methods known as Ordinals, Inscriptions and BRC-20 Bitcoin tokens modeled on Ethereum’s ERC-20 standard.

Growing momentum

In May, Singapore’s OmniBOLT, a project that develops solutions on Bitcoin’s layer-2 network environment, outlined that it will support BRC-20 tokens on Lightning Network. In the same month, crypto exchange OKX announced its support for Bitcoin Ordinals and BRC-20 tokens.

Established in 2007 as an online gaming company in Beijing, Linekong Interactive made its debut on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2014. Wang Fang, prior to founding Linekong, served as the Vice President of Software Development at Kingsoft Software, a prominent Chinese information technology conglomerate.

In 2018, Wang Fang stepped down as CEO of Linekong to dedicate his focus to blockchain technology. During this period, he initiated multiple projects implicating NFTs, DeFi and Bitcoin mining. In 2022, following an invitation from Linekong’s board of directors, he returned as CEO with the objective of achieving a more seamless integration of Linekong products with the emerging world of Web3.

One community member provided a nuanced take on why there has been less development on Bitcoin on X today, stating:

“It turns out you can actually do a lot of cool things within the constraints of #bitcoin’s code, but VCs [venture capitalists] weren’t interested in funding these things because they couldn’t cash out on the sale of unregistered security tokens. Fiat incentives at work.”

Linekong Interactive’s $15 million investment in the Bitcoin ecosystem reflects a growing trend of interest in expanding the capabilities and applications of the Bitcoin network in spite of the incentives that venture capital firms may have followed in the overarching crypto space in the past.

Bybit enables stock trading with USDT

Dubai-headquartered crypto derivatives trading platform Bybit has moved to enable stock trading on its platform.  The offering, initially featuring 78 stocks, is being provided via Bybit’s MT5 platform, which includes access to various financial instruments including forex, commodities, contracts for difference (CFDs) and crypto, according to an announcement made by the company last week.Photo by Ishant Mishra on UnsplashStock derivatives via CFDsIndividual stocks are being offered in a pairing with U.S. dollar stablecoin USDT. Bybit’s MT5 is a trading platform originally developed by software company MetaQuotes, facilitating the integration of various asset classes within one platform. Enabled through the use of CFDs, holders of such stock-derived CFDs can receive dividend adjustments based upon the ex-dividend events of the underlying stocks. A trading fee of 0.04 USDT has been set, with a minimum charge of 5 USDT per order. Access to leading global equitiesBybit users will now be able to gain exposure to leading U.S. equities such as Apple (AAPL), Amazon (AMZN), Meta (META), Microsoft (MSFT) and Nvidia (NVDA). By adding this product to its multi-asset trading platform, Bybit has reduced a degree of friction for market participants. In pairing these stocks with USDT, it means that there is no fiat onboarding required and transferring funds in fiat from outside the crypto ecosystem is not required. In a press release, the firm asserted that the development was a “landmark move bridging traditional and decentralized finance.” Bybit further asserted that with this product launch, it has become “the first and only major crypto exchange to unify crypto, stocks, and traditional assets under one roof.” Previous offeringsA few years ago, global crypto exchange platform Binance had offered tokenized stocks through a partnership with German global financial services firm CM-Equity AG. However, it withdrew that product offering in 2021 when faced with growing regulatory pressure.  Failed crypto exchange FTX also offered its users exposure to tokenized stocks, which was also facilitated by CM-Equity AG. That product offering came to an abrupt halt in November 2022 when the platform collapsed. With a more positive regulatory position having been adopted in the United States following the election of U.S. President Donald Trump, tokenized stock offerings are emerging once again. In March Coinbase CFO Alesia Haas said that the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) could facilitate such offerings going forward. The U.S. crypto exchange platform has revived plans to tokenize its own COIN stock, alongside other securities.Bernstein analysts recently predicted that the crypto sector is moving towards integrated platforms that offer both traditional financial products alongside digital assets. Further evidence of this approach emerged on May 22 with the news that global crypto exchange platform Kraken plans to add access soon to a range of tokenized stocks for its global user base.  The company’s U.S. clients can already access in excess of 11,000 stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Blurring the lines further between TradFi and the digital assets space, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon indicated last week that the investment bank will facilitate Bitcoin trading for clients from now on.

Ethereum Foundation targets Asian expansion with Bangkok set for Devcon 7

The Ethereum Foundation is set to make a significant impact on the Southeast Asian Ethereum community as it announces Bangkok as the location for Devcon 7.Photo by Viktor Forgacs on UnsplashFocusing on Southeast AsiaThe Ethereum developer conference will be held in the Thai capital from Nov. 12 to 15. The decision signifies a broadened vision for the event, shifting from a city-focused approach to embracing the entire Southeast Asia region as the backdrop for this community gathering. To underscore the Foundation’s intent, it has renamed the event from Devcon 7 to "Devcon Southeast Asia." Expressing enthusiasm about the potential and rapid growth of the Ethereum community in Southeast Asia, the Ethereum Foundation sees the scheduling of Devcon 7 for 2024 as an opportunity to deeply engage with local communities, providing meaningful support and empowerment. This shift aims to make Devcon 7 a more inclusive and regionally focused event, aptly named "Devcon Southeast Asia" to highlight its broader reach and impact. There has already been a positive reaction from crypto community members in the region in response to the choice of Bangkok for the conference. Navaporn Nalita, the founder of Crypto City Connext in Thailand wrote that “Bangkok's collaborative ecosystem, welcomes Devcon 2024 with open arms (and open blockchains)! Thailand's vibrant dev scene is primed to ignite alongside the world's brightest minds.” In short order, community builders have been looking to make the most out of the opportunity. Aligning with crypto growth potentialAccording to the blog post published by the Ethereum Foundation outlining the announcement, the choice of Bangkok as the host city aligns with the region's crypto adoption growth. Countries like Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand have shown remarkable positions in the Global Crypto Adoption Index, underscoring the pivotal role of Southeast Asia in the global Ethereum landscape. To support Ethereum events, grassroots communities and educational initiatives in Southeast Asia, the Ethereum Foundation (EF) initiated the Road to Devcon (RTD) Grants round on June 29. This grant round is specifically aimed at individuals in Southeast Asia actively building communities, developing educational activities, and contributing to the growth of the Ethereum ecosystem. Encouraging smaller meet-ups over large events, the EF set the maximum grant at $1,000. The initiative aims to empower the Southeast Asian Ethereum community by providing support along the Road to Devcon. In a recent Chainalysis research report, Vietnam has emerged as the leader in cryptocurrency adoption within Southeast Asia, claiming the top spot in the region and ranking third globally in the Global Crypto Adoption Index for 2023. This index considers transaction volumes, protocols, web traffic patterns and factors like population size and purchasing power. The competition among Southeast Asian countries to establish themselves as crypto hubs is evident. Each nation adopts different regulatory approaches, with Singapore and Thailand implementing stricter measures. There has been a steady stream of Ethereum developer-centric conferences in recent years. 2022 featured EthDenver, Avax Barcelona, Devconnect Amsterdam, Devcon Bogota and EthSF (San Francisco). EthDenver, EthCC Paris and Devconnect Istanbul followed in 2023. As Devcon Southeast Asia approaches, the Ethereum Foundation anticipates fostering deeper connections and collaboration in this vibrant and evolving ecosystem.
