Lotte’s NFT marketplace partners with upcycling brand NiUl for membership NFTs

Lotte Data Communication, an affiliate of South Korean retail conglomerate Lotte Group, issued a press release on Wednesday (local time) to reveal that its NFT marketplace, Kottonseed, has issued new non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in partnership with upcycling brand NiUl whose name stands for “Nothing is Useless.”

Plastic lids to stylish keychains

NiUl recycles discarded plastic lids, transforming them into vibrant, stylish key ring pendants known as NiUl rings. NiUl has successfully sold over 2,000 pendants across a mix of online and offline platforms, with 300 kilograms of plastic lids donated by supporters. In a strategic move to broaden its reach, the company has been partnering with diverse firms and ramping up its donation initiatives, targeting environment and fashion-conscious millennials and Generation Z consumers.

In their latest venture with Kottonseed, these pendants have been digitized into membership NFTs, which come with a suite of benefits like a special edition rope strap and discounts on products. Some lucky members may even get the opportunity to be involved in creating a NiUl ring. These membership NFTs are being released in limited numbers and are up for grabs starting today on NiUl’s page on Smart Store, an e-commerce platform of popular search engine Naver.

 

NFTs in five colors

The NFTs are offered in five distinct colors, each named after the sky’s varying appearances: “Post-rain Clear,” “Blue Sky,” “Sunset,” “Aurora” and “Night Sky.”

A spokesperson for Lotte Data Communication expressed that the company sees great value in participating in upcycling initiatives with NiUl through their NFT marketplace, Kottonseed. They are keen on pursuing enjoyable and varied collaborations to support NiUl’s socially beneficial endeavors. Moreover, Lotte is actively exploring ways in which NFTs can contribute to environmental, social and governance (ESG) objectives.

UAE deepens its crypto push as Bybit wins full license and institutions move in

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) advanced its push to become a leading digital asset hub as crypto exchange Bybit received a full virtual asset platform operator license from the Securities and Commodities Authority (SCA). The permit enables Bybit to provide its entire range of products to UAE residents, the company said in an Oct. 9 press release. The clearance marks the culmination of a process that began when Bybit received preliminary approval from the SCA in February. Crypto custody firm BitGo secured a broker-dealer license from Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA). The new authorization allows BitGo MENA to deliver regulated trading and intermediation services across the region through an integrated OTC desk and a digital platform supporting spot crypto trading in both dirhams and U.S. dollars. The UAE’s welcoming attitude toward digital assets is changing how major investors think about wealth. Last month Qatar National Bank (QNB) Group joined forces with Standard Chartered and DMZ Finance to launch the first regulated tokenized money market fund in the Dubai International Financial Centre. Using blockchain technology, the QCD Money Market Fund brings traditional financial assets on-chain, creating new yield opportunities for investors within the digital economy. The fund is managed by QNB Group, uses infrastructure provided solely by DMZ Finance, and has Standard Chartered serving as custodian of its assets. As the UAE deepens its role in global finance, regulators are also working to align with international standards. By 2027, it expects to adopt the OECD’s Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF), with cross-border data exchanges to begin in 2028. The Ministry of Finance has already signed the Multilateral Competent Authority Agreement to make this happen. The framework promotes automatic sharing of crypto-related tax information among member countries, underscoring the UAE’s commitment to global transparency as it expands its financial footprint. Recent developments show the jurisdiction striving for growth while strengthening oversight. Exchanges are gaining clarity on what they can offer, institutions are building trading rails, and investors are embracing tokenized products. They signal a market finding its balance between innovation and regulation. The coming years will reveal how well that balance can hold.

HKMA Issues Warning Against Crypto Firm MisrepresentationThe Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), the central bank for the Chinese autonomous territory, has taken a stand against cryptocurrency businesses that falsely present themselves as “banks” and market their products as “deposits,” issuing a public advisory to raise awareness about the issue.Photo by Marcel Eberle on UnsplashBanking ordinance violationsIn a press release published to its website on Friday, the HKMA said that instances had arisen where crypto firms had labeled themselves as “crypto banks,” “crypto asset banks,” and “digital trading banks.” The regulatory authority underscored that such misrepresentations could be in violation of the Banking Ordinance in Hong Kong.In addition to adopting misleading bank-related titles, these crypto firms have been advertising “savings plans” as “low risk” with “high return,” potentially misleading the public into believing that these entities are authorized banks in Hong Kong, where they can securely deposit their funds.The HKMA stressed that only entities such as licensed banks, restricted license banks, and deposit-taking companies, collectively referred to as “authorized institutions” and holding a license granted by the HKMA, are legally permitted to engage in banking or deposit-taking activities in Hong Kong.Furthermore, funds held on crypto exchanges are not covered by Hong Kong’s Deposit Protection Scheme. “Under the Banking Ordinance, only licensed banks, restricted license banks and deposit-taking companies, which have been granted a license by the HKMA can carry out banking or deposit-taking business in Hong Kong,” the HKMA stated.Misuse of banking termsAny entity using the term “bank” in its business name or implying that it offers banking services in Hong Kong is committing an offense, according to the central bank. The same rule applies to any entity engaging in deposit-taking activities in Hong Kong or soliciting the public to make deposits.It’s important to note that crypto firms not officially recognized as banks in Hong Kong are not subject to the oversight of the HKMA.The HKMA advised the public to exercise caution. In cases of uncertainty regarding an entity claiming to be a bank or soliciting deposits in Hong Kong, individuals are encouraged to consult the register of authorized institutions on the HKMA’s website, and if doubts persist, it suggests that they should contact the authority via its Public Enquiry Service hotline.According to section 97 of the Banking Ordinance, only a bank or a central bank can use the term “bank” or its derivatives in its business name in Hong Kong without the written consent of the HKMA.Additionally, sections 11 and 12 of the Banking Ordinance stipulate that only entities possessing a valid banking license or recognized as authorized institutions are permitted to engage in banking or deposit-taking activities in Hong Kong. As per section 92 of the Banking Ordinance, only an authorized institution is authorized to issue advertisements inviting the public to make deposits, with certain exceptions.The HKMA’s advisory serves as a stern reminder to the crypto industry that regulatory compliance and transparency are essential, particularly when using terms associated with traditional banking, to protect the interests of the public.
