10.1% year-on-year increase

According to reports published in recent days in local media, as of September 2023, the country boasts 17.91 million crypto investors, marking a noteworthy 0.67% uptick compared to the previous month of August, which registered 17.79 million individuals.

Over the span of a year, from September 2022 to September 2023, the Southeast Asian nation witnessed an influx of approximately 1.64 million new crypto investors, showcasing a remarkable 10.1% increase from the 16.27 million reported in September 2022.

Emerging from a slowdown

While this growth signals a positive trend, a noteworthy observation pertains to the deceleration in crypto investor growth from October 2022 to August 2023. The data reveals that during this period, the increase in the number of crypto investors in Indonesia never exceeded 1%. This slowdown can be attributed to the global crypto market’s trend characterized by uncertainty and a downward trajectory.

Tirta Karma Senjaya, Head of the Bappebti Commodity Futures Trading Development and Development Bureau, comments on this phenomenon, stating, “Growth in the number of crypto investors in Indonesia continues to increase, but investors are still looking for the right time to buy crypto.”

Furthermore, Bappebti highlights a reduction in the value of crypto transactions in Indonesia for September 2023, amounting to IDR 7.96 trillion ($502 million). This marks a decrease of 25.2% when compared to the preceding month, which recorded a total of IDR 10.64 trillion. In contrast to the previous year, this decline reflects a substantial 54.7% contraction from the September 2022 figure of IDR 17.57 trillion.

Yudhono Rawis, CEO of Tokocrypto, an Indonesian crypto exchange platform, suggests that global conditions, including economic and regulatory uncertainties, have significantly impacted the crypto market’s evolution, both within Indonesia and worldwide. Despite the recent slowdown in growth, Indonesia’s crypto market continues to exhibit considerable potential.

Bitcoin resurgence

Yudhono remains optimistic, anticipating that the growth and trading volumes of crypto assets in October will surpass previous records. This optimism stems from the surge in Bitcoin prices, which soared in excess of $35,000 (approximately IDR 556.5 million) towards the end of October. This milestone marks Bitcoin’s highest point in nearly 18 months and signifies a mounting interest in the crypto market on a global scale.

In a statement to Voice of Indonesia, Yudhono stated:

“We are confident that the growth of investors and transactions will continue to increase. The increase in Bitcoin prices and increasingly strong interest in the crypto market in general are indications that these digital assets are increasingly accepted by society. We hope that this trend will continue and bring benefits to the entire ecosystem crypto.”

The crypto investment sector in Indonesia continues to experience steady growth, albeit amid global market fluctuations. With Bitcoin’s resurgence and a growing appetite for digital assets, the outlook for Indonesia’s crypto market is positive.

Saudi Arabia’s NEOM Forms $50M Animoca Brands Partnership

Saudi Arabia’s NEOM Forms $50M Animoca Brands PartnershipHong Kong’s Animoca brands, a gaming and metaverse venture capital firm, is embarking on a partnership with Saudi Arabia’s NEOM Investment Fund, focusing on pioneering Web3 initiatives.Animoca announced the initiative via a statement published to its website on Monday. NEOM is an ambitious project aiming to create a futuristic urban oasis in northwest Saudi Arabia, serving as a nexus for technology, commerce, entertainment, and tourism. It is planning to invest $50 million in Animoca.Photo by Hala AlGhanim on UnsplashDeveloping Web3 service capabilitiesThis collaboration will see Animoca harness its expertise to develop Web3 service capabilities with broad global applications in tandem with NEOM, aligning with NEOM’s vision of becoming a cutting-edge tech hub of the future.Animoca Brands has been a prominent player in the Web3 investment arena for several years. In July 2022, the company’s valuation soared to $6 billion, with backing from notable entities such as Singapore’s state investment fund, Temasek. Despite its ambitious goal to secure $2 billion for its metaverse fund in November of the same year, those expectations were significantly tempered following the FTX collapse. Consequently, in March, Animoca revised its target to a more modest $800 million.In-house market makingA report by The Block on Friday revealed that Animoca has been making efforts to pitch an in-house market making service to fledgling Web3 businesses within its portfolio. That service has been presented by the company to more than 400 startup projects in which it has been an investor over recent months. The key market makers in the crypto space include Wintermute, Keyrock, and GSR. This move by Animoca potentially puts Animoca in direct competition with these primary crypto-sector market makers. An in-house digital asset team has been tasked with offering the service. An Animoca spokesperson stated:“Its primary role, much like the treasury teams in many large corporations, is to optimize the utilization of the company’s balance sheet. The team does conduct market-making to ensure there is enough buy/sell liquidity for certain tokens, which is similar to the function that third-party market makers conduct, except that we choose to perform this in-house for scale and efficiency.”Saudi diversificationAs part of its Vision 2030 initiative, Saudi Arabia has been looking to diversify away from its predominantly oil-based economy. In an interview last month, Animoca Brands Founder Yat Siu outlined that the Middle Eastern country is embracing new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain, encompassing blockchain-based gaming and Web3.In July it emerged that the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) were looking to extend the level of collaboration between the two territories relative to international payments and tokenization. This renewed interest from state-backed funds in Animoca suggests a potential shift in the Web3 venture capital landscape, coinciding with broader indications of a thaw in the crypto winter. The collaboration with NEOM and the injection of $50 million underscore the growing recognition of Web3’s potential, cementing Animoca Brands’ position as a key player in the ever-developing Web3 space.

Hyundai Motor Harnesses Blockchain to Double Down on Climate Change Efforts

Hyundai Motor Harnesses Blockchain to Double Down on Climate Change EffortsSouth Korean auto giant Hyundai Motor Group is taking significant strides in tackling global climate change concerns by harnessing the power of blockchain technology.Photo by Chris Liverani on UnsplashTracking carbon emissionsToday, Hyundai Motor and Kia, two affiliates of the group, have introduced the Supplier CO2 Emission Monitoring System (SCEMS), a carbon emission tracking solution based on blockchain technology. This system marks a pivotal step towards intensifying their efforts to reduce carbon emissions across their extensive supply chain. The SCEMS is designed to record and manage carbon footprints at every stage of the manufacturing process, starting from the extraction of raw materials to the production and delivery of parts and vehicles. This comprehensive approach allows Hyundai and Kia to gain better control over their carbon reduction initiatives. The urgency of addressing climate change has made it essential for organizations of all sizes to manage and decrease their carbon emissions. However, calculating carbon footprints requires an understanding of complex standards and intricate mathematical processes.Supply chainTo address these challenges, Hyundai Motor and Kia are providing the SCEMS to hundreds of their suppliers free of charge, offering them the necessary tools to effectively curb carbon emissions. The SCEMS employs artificial intelligence modeling, which automatically computes carbon emissions and predicts future projections as suppliers from various industries input their data into the system.Previously, these suppliers had to rely on external experts to perform such calculations. By adopting Hyundai’s new system, suppliers can now independently set their carbon reduction goals and efficiently manage their activities, thereby cutting costs and enhancing their competencies.Incorporating blockchainMoreover, Hyundai Motor and Kia anticipate that the incorporation of blockchain technology into their operations will bolster the reliability of their data, increasing their credibility among global evaluators of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) management.A Hyundai official emphasized that the scope of eco-friendly products now encompasses their entire lifecycles and supply chains. The company aims to lead the charge in building a sustainable and green supply chain. In line with this commitment, Hyundai Motor and Kia in February joined the Carbon Disclosure Project’s (CDP) Supply Chain Program, a nonprofit organization that oversees a global disclosure system for investors, companies, and regions to manage their environmental impacts. As part of this initiative, the Hyundai affiliates have also provided education to their suppliers to aid them in achieving carbon neutrality.Under the CDP’s Supply Chain Program, Hyundai affiliates’ suppliers need to submit data on energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, along with carbon neutrality strategies, sustainability objectives, and renewable energy transition plans to the nonprofit organization.
