BitMEX Co-Founder Forecasts $750K to $1 Million Bitcoin Price by 2026

Markets·October 07, 2023, 12:39 AM

In a recent interview with YouTuber Tom Bilyeu, Arthur Hayes, Co-Founder of the Seychelles-registered cryptocurrency exchange and derivative trading platform BitMEX, has expressed his bullish outlook on Bitcoin’s future price, projecting a valuation of $750,000 to $1 million for the leading cryptocurrency by the year 2026.

Finite supply to drive price dynamic

Hayes’ optimism is rooted in several factors that he believes will shape the next Bitcoin cycle. One of the key factors driving Hayes’ projection is Bitcoin’s limited supply. With a maximum cap of 21 million coins, Bitcoin’s scarcity is expected to propel the unit price of the asset in tandem with growing demand as more investors seek to secure a piece of this finite resource.

The idea that Bitcoin’s scarcity will drive its value higher has been a fundamental tenet of the cryptocurrency since its inception. In 2010 the leading cryptocurrency’s pseudonymous Founder stated: “When someone tries to buy all the world’s supply of a scarce asset, the more they buy the higher the price goes.”

ETF potential

Hayes also highlighted the potential for Bitcoin spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs) to become available in major regulated markets. The introduction of Bitcoin ETFs could attract institutional investors and provide a more accessible way for the broader public to invest in Bitcoin, further boosting its demand.

However, Hayes also speculates about the risks associated with a Bitcoin ETF. He stated: “Are we inviting in something that’s going to fundamentally change what Bitcoin is?”

Geopolitical factors

Geopolitical uncertainty plays a significant role in Hayes’ forecast also. As global economic and political instability persists, investors may turn to Bitcoin and other alternative assets as hedges against traditional financial instruments.

However, it’s important to note that Hayes contextualized his Bitcoin price prediction within a larger bullish macroeconomic environment. From his perspective the surge in asset prices will not be limited to cryptocurrencies alone. He anticipates a substantial boom in financial markets, with not only Bitcoin but also traditional assets like stocks experiencing substantial price growth.

Hayes stated: “I think it will be the biggest boom in financial markets we have ever seen in human history. Bitcoin will have a ridiculous price, Nasdaq will have a ridiculous price, S&P will have a ridiculous price.”

Known for his thoughtful and insightful writings on the subject area, Hayes wrote in July that he believes that Bitcoin will be the currency of choice when it comes to the growing need for artificial intelligence (AI) to work directly with a means of payment.

$1 million BTC by 2026

While Hayes’ projection of a $1 million Bitcoin price by 2026 may seem ambitious, his short-term predictions are more moderate. He foresees Bitcoin trading in the $30,000 range for the current year. Building upon that thesis, he maintains that the possibility exists of it reaching $70,000 by 2024.

This aligns with the views of other industry analysts who anticipate challenges and headwinds in the near term. There’s little doubt that recent platform failures and speculation with regard to the health of other leading crypto platforms have been retarding market performance more recently.

While the road ahead may hold fluctuations and challenges, many experts believe that Bitcoin’s long-term trajectory remains promising, driven by its unique attributes and the changing dynamics of global finance.

Animoca Brands ventures into Bitcoin ecosystem

Hong Kong-based game software company Animoca Brands has announced its foray into the Bitcoin industry by endorsing the Opal Foundation, a novel Bitcoin ecosystem protocol. The move involves the Opal Protocol and BLIF token, initiated by Animoca Brands and Darewise, a metaverse technology platform. On April 30, Animoca Brands disclosed its plans to become the "largest Web3 ecosystem" for gaming, education and culture built on Bitcoin. The company aims to establish the Opal Protocol and BLIF token as key components of this ecosystem.Photo by Kanchanara on UnsplashBLIF token and Opal ProtocolThe BLIF token, also known as the Opal Protocol Runes token, is hailed by Animoca as a means to enable a "true digital life" on Bitcoin. According to Animoca's executive chairman and co-founder Yat Siu, Bitcoin is now primed for Web3, transitioning from a mere store of value to a store of culture for the Web3 age. Six of Animoca Brands' portfolio companies have already joined as Genesis members, signaling a strong start for the Opal Protocol. Additionally, all future Bitcoin-based projects from Animoca Brands will collaborate with the Opal Foundation. Launched in 2024, the Opal protocol positions itself as a decentralized ecosystem protocol on Bitcoin, powered by BLIF. Its litepaper describes it as a seamless blend of virtual and real-life experiences, offering digital extensions of reality across various domains such as banking, entertainment, education and social interactions. The launch date of the Opal protocol and BLIF airdrop is yet to be announced, but Opal's Telegram group has hinted at its impending arrival. Despite not being operational, Opal's X profile already boasts over 270,000 subscribers. Strategic partnershipAnimoca Brands is hailed as the first strategic launch partner for the Opal Foundation. The company's collaboration aims to integrate its vision into the open Opal protocol on Bitcoin and ordinals. Animoca's venture into Bitcoin coincides with the recent trading debut of spot Bitcoin and Ether exchange-traded funds (ETF) in Hong Kong. However, the initial trading volumes of these ETFs were relatively modest compared to spot Bitcoin ETFs launched in the United States in January 2024.

Credit Saison launches $50M blockchain fund, deepening push into emerging markets

Credit Saison, one of the largest credit card issuers in Japan, is accelerating its global venture strategy with the creation of Onigiri Capital, a new fund targeting early-stage startups building on blockchain technology. Set up in Singapore last month through Credit Saison’s corporate venture arm, Saison Capital, the vehicle is aiming for up to $50 million in commitments and will run for 10 years, with an optional two-year extension. The fund has already secured $35 million toward its target.Photo by Markus Winkler on UnsplashBuilding on a fintech track recordThe initiative is part of Credit Saison’s broader plan to expand in emerging markets and spur innovation in financial services, drawing on Saison Capital’s track record. Established in 2019, the venture arm has backed fintech startups across Asia and, since 2021, has increasingly focused on blockchain-based finance, investing in more than 40 companies. The firm said those investments laid the groundwork for Onigiri Capital, which will also enable other financial institutions to invest alongside Credit Saison in promising blockchain ventures. Onigiri Capital will concentrate on five areas: stablecoins, payments, asset tokenization, decentralized finance (DeFi), and financial infrastructure. The fund will invest primarily at the seed and early stages, with an emphasis on long-term growth. Managing the fund are Qin En Looi, a partner at Saison Capital involved in over 40 blockchain investments, and Hans de Back, a venture investor with more than two decades of experience. Cross-border stablecoin pilotThe launch comes as Japan steps up efforts in digital assets beyond investment alone. According to Electronic Times, the first phase of “Project Pax,” a cross-border stablecoin remittance pilot involving financial institutions in Japan and South Korea, concluded successfully last week. Participants were Progmat—a tokenization platform backed by a consortium of major institutions, including MUFG—along with Datachain and Shoko Chukin Bank from Japan, and Shinhan Bank, NH Nonghyup Bank, and Kbank from South Korea. Fair Square Lab and Korea Digital Asset Custody helped develop an application programming interface (API) for the trial. The pilot demonstrated the feasibility of a network that converts fiat currency into stablecoins for on-chain transfers and then back into local currency at the destination, an approach expected to reduce the time and cost of cross-border payments. The results add momentum to Japan’s bid to modernize financial infrastructure, a backdrop that Onigiri Capital aims to capitalize on as it deploys capital into the sector.
