Blurring the lines of TradFi

The initiative, announced by UBS in Singapore on Monday, promises to streamline the traditionally cumbersome processes of fund subscriptions and redemptions. Additionally it highlights the increasing integration of blockchain technology into traditional finance, effectively blurring the boundaries between the two worlds.

The UBS project aligns with Singapore’s Variable Capital Company (VCC) fund structure and falls within the scope of Project Guardian, championed by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).

Structured in this way, UBS believes that the project design lends itself to the ability to bring various forms of real-world assets (RWAs) to the blockchain. Furthermore, it establishes a favorable rapport with regulatory authorities in Singapore, a jurisdiction known for its forward-thinking, crypto-friendly financial regulatory environment.

Public blockchain use

This new offering relies upon a smart contract that’s run on the Ethereum public blockchain, encapsulating the money market fund. Through this smart contract use, the subscription and redemption processes can be simplified. That will represent a major change, given that those processes have traditionally been laden with paperwork and delays.

In the first iteration, large TradFi firms like UBS considered the use of private blockchains but as Matt Hougan, the CIO of crypto asset manager Bitwise, pointed out, this particular initiative is indicative of a shift towards public blockchains. Hougan stated:

“Remember when TradFi projects were built on private blockchains? They are all being built on Ethereum today. Progress.”

RWA tokenization potential

The tokenization of real-world assets has the potential to revolutionize digital asset investments by offering transparency, security, and trust. It not only paves the way for a better understanding of digital assets but also accelerates their adoption. UBS’s pilot project represents another significant move in this direction.

With increasing support from regulatory bodies like MAS, the fusion of digital assets with traditional financial structures is likely to witness a myriad of large-scale implementations in the not too distant future.

UBS Tokenize

UBS harnessed the power of its in-house tokenization service, UBS Tokenize, to seamlessly conduct the controlled pilot of the tokenized money market fund. The initiative falls squarely within the purview of UBS’s global distributed ledger technology strategy, which aims to elevate fund distribution and issuance to greater levels of efficiency by leveraging the capabilities of both private and public blockchains.

UBS Tokenize also featured in a separate initiative earlier this year in Hong Kong, facilitating the issuance of digital structured notes on the Ethereum blockchain via the Bank of China Investment (BOCI).

The momentum behind the tokenization of real-world assets has been building in recent years, with various protocols focusing on real-world assets consistently outperforming other sub-sectors of decentralized finance.

CoinGecko expands data offering through Zash acquisition

CoinGecko expands data offering through Zash acquisitionCoinGecko, the Malaysian crypto data aggregator, has intensified its focus on the non-fungible token (NFT) market through the recent acquisition of London-headquartered Zash. The move forms part of CoinGecko’s initiative to enhance its API offering by providing comprehensive data on digital collectibles.Photo by Andrey Metelev on UnsplashSolving for crypto data fragmentationIn a statement published to its website on Wednesday, CoinGecko provided further details on its acquisition of the enterprise-grade NFT and blockchain analytics company. Separately CoinGecko Co-Founder Bobby Ong told Tech in Asia that the crypto data sector is fragmented. As a consequence, it leads to inefficiency as market participants are forced to navigate multiple crypto data APIs. It’s in an effort to solve that issue that Ong and CoinGecko have moved to acquire Zash.Zash Co-Founder and CEO Parit Patel expressed optimism about the evolving nature of NFTs and their potential to unlock new use cases globally, creating value for both companies and consumers. The company plans to introduce new services derived from the acquisition by the second quarter of 2024.Enriched data offeringIn its own statement, CoinGecko emphasized its commitment to offering more NFT-related metrics. The acquisition aims to enrich CoinGecko’s data offerings with information such as metadata, historical trades and lending data related to NFTs. The specific financial details of the deal were not disclosed. With the integration of Zash, users can expect access to a broader range of data across multiple blockchain networks, including Ethereum, Polygon, BNB Chain (formerly Binance Smart Chain), Bitcoin Ordinals and Solana. The extended services will cover NFT lending information indexing various marketplaces, such as Blend, X2Y2 and NFTfi.In reflecting on the acquisition, CoinGecko Co-Founder TM Lee considered the move in terms of the ongoing process of asset tokenization. Taking to the X platform, Lee wrote:“Any asset that can be tokenized, will be tokenized. Like tokens, NFT is a core primitive to the crypto economy stack. We’ve been building http://coingecko.com/nft earlier even in the bear market and I’m excited on possibilities within the NFT industry with @zash_api joining us!”Monitoring wash tradingOne notable feature introduced through Zash is the ability for users to monitor wash trading, an illegal form of market manipulation that gives the false impression of market activity. CoinGecko clarified that this feature would be available for “major collections” minted on Ethereum.Wash trading, involving the simultaneous buying and selling of assets, has been associated with the NFT bubble of 2022. Blockchain forensic firm Chainalysis reported that over 100 profitable wash traders collectively earned nearly $9 million from this activity. However, it noted that the majority of NFT wash traders have been unprofitable, resulting in losses exceeding $416,984 from more than 150 wash trades. While the NFT market has faced challenges, with total sales currently at $80.8 million, significantly lower than the peak in August 2021 when daily sales exceeded $2 billion, CoinGecko’s strategic move positions the company to provide users with enhanced tools for assessing and ranking their cryptocurrency holdings. Established in 2014, CoinGecko operates as a platform offering comprehensive data and information on digital currencies, contributing to the quantitative evaluation of cryptocurrency portfolios.

LH Leverages Blockchain to Certify Legally Important Documents

LH Leverages Blockchain to Certify Legally Important DocumentsThe Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) is set to build a certification platform to replace paper documents as the sole form of legal certification. The initiative aims to bring the credibility of traditional methods like contents-certified mail to electronic documents by leveraging blockchain technology.Photo by Liam Truong on UnsplashContents-certified mail — transitioning from postal to digitalContents-certified mail refers to a specific type of mail service provided by the post office, which offers special guarantees regarding the delivery and content of a document. When a document is sent using contents-certified mail, the post office provides certain assurances that can be beneficial in legal and official contexts.Amidst the rise in demand for digital administrative services due to increased remote technologies in the post-COVID-19 era, the ongoing expansion of Web3, and enhanced customized administration, there has also been a growing need for the digitization of documents related to compensation for land and buildings.According to industry sources, LH plans to automate document transmission and management functions through the platform, establishing a digital environment for generating, sending, receiving, viewing, and storing electronic documents.Factoring in blockchain techA key feature of the proof platform is its integrated blockchain technology. “Utilizing blockchain allows accurate documentation of LH as the sender, as well as the timestamps of delivery and reception. This will subsequently enhance transparency and security,” LH said.Going paperlessBy establishing the digital platform, LH will be able to introduce a more convenient method of sending legally significant documents, essentially replacing the manual method of sending them through postal services. This could include sending them via platforms used nationwide like Naver or KakaoTalk or through text messages sent by the country’s major telecommunication companies. This innovation can contribute to the proliferation of paperless methods, addressing the expected increase in postal delivery failures tied to the rise of single-person households.“By constructing this platform, we can better protect user rights and provide administrative services that transcend the temporal and spatial constraints of registered mail,” LH said. “We will broaden our legal, institutional, and technical discussions to innovate processes for verifying the validity of electronic documents.”The project is currently in operation in certain areas related to compensation. According to LH, the plan is to expand the project’s scope to encompass all areas of compensation by next year and then to other areas such as the management and sale of rental apartments. The corporation said that it posted a bidding notice last Wednesday to hire a company that can build the blockchain-powered platform that certifies legally important documents. LH is currently undergoing a selection process.Employing smart contractsLH also mentioned that it is preparing a smart contract system. The system programs the terms agreed upon by involved parties in advance, embeds them in an electronic contract, and enables automatic execution of the terms of the contract when all conditions are met.
