SK C&C and NEAR Foundation Forge Strategic Partnership to Fuel Web3 Growth

Web3 & Enterprise·September 25, 2023, 4:46 AM

SK C&C, the information and communications technology affiliate of the South Korean conglomerate SK Group, last week announced its strategic partnership with the NEAR Foundation, the organization supporting the NEAR Protocol blockchain, aiming to broaden its Web3 business initiatives.

The partnership ceremony was held earlier this month at a hotel in Seoul and saw attendance from Choi Cheol, the Head of Web3 and Convergence Group at SK C&C, along with Marieke Flament, the CEO of the NEAR Foundation.

NEAR Protocol is a layer 1 blockchain that enables enterprises to build private shards that can be connected to the public blockchain.

Blockchain research and global marketing

Through this agreement, the two companies will establish a mutual support system to strengthen their business networks, cooperate on research and business projects related to blockchain technology, spanning all industries, and execute global marketing strategies to elevate their brands and accelerate the Web3 ecosystem.

SK C&C’s ChainZ and NEAR Protocol

As part of this initiative, the two sides seek to link SK C&C’s own blockchain platform, ChainZ, with NEAR Protocol to develop a Web3 market that supports both public and private blockchains. Focusing on the financial infrastructure sector, SK C&C aims to inject momentum into its ventures in domains like the sharing economy market — a flourishing ground for second-hand item trading platforms — and in the gaming, content, and commerce sectors, where the issuance of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) is expected.

Tailored corporate solutions

They will delve into the development of Web3 solutions tailored for corporations, concentrating on areas like supply chain management and enterprise resource planning (ERP). ChainZ’s Key Recovery System will play a pivotal role in enhancing security and simplifying account management, while NEAR Protocol will support high transaction speeds, scalability, and interoperability between multichains.

For example, assets like inventories, orders, loans, and bills of lading can be marked with tokens based on NEAR Protocol. These can then be verified at each stage of an entire trade process through digital signatures recorded on ChainZ.

Moreover, SK C&C will leverage the NEAR Foundation’s global network as a stepping stone for global market entry, while NEAR Protocol will utilize the business network of SK C&C to garner customers in the Korean market. This effort to expand NEAR’s presence in South Korea also aligns with its joining hands with Dongdaemun, an administrative district in Seoul, earlier this month.

SK C&C’s Choi Cheol underscored the efforts underway across various industrial sectors, including public, finance, manufacturing, and commerce, to develop Web3 services driven by public blockchains. He stated that beginning with NEAR Protocol, SK C&C would intensify collaborations with different public blockchain projects to broaden the ecosystem for Web3 services.

Credit Saison launches $50M blockchain fund, deepening push into emerging markets

Credit Saison, one of the largest credit card issuers in Japan, is accelerating its global venture strategy with the creation of Onigiri Capital, a new fund targeting early-stage startups building on blockchain technology. Set up in Singapore last month through Credit Saison’s corporate venture arm, Saison Capital, the vehicle is aiming for up to $50 million in commitments and will run for 10 years, with an optional two-year extension. The fund has already secured $35 million toward its target.Photo by Markus Winkler on UnsplashBuilding on a fintech track recordThe initiative is part of Credit Saison’s broader plan to expand in emerging markets and spur innovation in financial services, drawing on Saison Capital’s track record. Established in 2019, the venture arm has backed fintech startups across Asia and, since 2021, has increasingly focused on blockchain-based finance, investing in more than 40 companies. The firm said those investments laid the groundwork for Onigiri Capital, which will also enable other financial institutions to invest alongside Credit Saison in promising blockchain ventures. Onigiri Capital will concentrate on five areas: stablecoins, payments, asset tokenization, decentralized finance (DeFi), and financial infrastructure. The fund will invest primarily at the seed and early stages, with an emphasis on long-term growth. Managing the fund are Qin En Looi, a partner at Saison Capital involved in over 40 blockchain investments, and Hans de Back, a venture investor with more than two decades of experience. Cross-border stablecoin pilotThe launch comes as Japan steps up efforts in digital assets beyond investment alone. According to Electronic Times, the first phase of “Project Pax,” a cross-border stablecoin remittance pilot involving financial institutions in Japan and South Korea, concluded successfully last week. Participants were Progmat—a tokenization platform backed by a consortium of major institutions, including MUFG—along with Datachain and Shoko Chukin Bank from Japan, and Shinhan Bank, NH Nonghyup Bank, and Kbank from South Korea. Fair Square Lab and Korea Digital Asset Custody helped develop an application programming interface (API) for the trial. The pilot demonstrated the feasibility of a network that converts fiat currency into stablecoins for on-chain transfers and then back into local currency at the destination, an approach expected to reduce the time and cost of cross-border payments. The results add momentum to Japan’s bid to modernize financial infrastructure, a backdrop that Onigiri Capital aims to capitalize on as it deploys capital into the sector.

BitMEX Chalks Up Two New Perp Contract Listings

BitMEX Chalks Up Two New Perp Contract ListingsSeychelles-based cryptocurrency exchange and derivative trading platform BitMEX announced recently that it has added perpetual contracts relative to two additional digital assets.A perpetual contract is a crypto futures contract without an expiry date. Just like with a more conventional futures contract, a perpetual contract is a derivative product, deriving its value from the underlying crypto asset.$SUI tokenTaking to Twitter, the company outlined that it has added perpetual contracts for the $SUI token. The contracts will be available in $SUI/USD and SUI/USDT pairings. Leverage relative to the contracts is being made available up to a maximum of 50x.$SUI is the native token of the Sui blockchain platform. Sui is a layer one blockchain which launched earlier this week. It’s a smart contract platform maintained via a network of permissionless validators. The blockchain network claims to offer a scalable network with ultra low latency. Such low latency can enable diverse use cases such as retail point of sale payment systems and gaming. The contract allows users to post bitcoin as collateral, earning or losing in bitcoin as the SUI/USD rate changes. Maximum risk limit is set at 50 bitcoin. Meanwhile maker and taker fees have been set for the product at 0.02% and 0.075% respectively. A base initial margin of 2% applies while base maintenance margin of 1% applies.$PEPE tokenOn Wednesday, BitMEX also launched perpetual contract products relative to the $PEPE token at 04:00 UTC. There are two listings, PEPE/USD and PEPE/USDT. Pepe coin is a meme token project, inspired by the Pepe the Frog meme. The origins of the cartoon character stem from the Boy’s Club comic in 2005. It later became an internet meme, and later still it was adopted as a meme within the crypto space. The token itself was launched in April, sky rocketing to a $502 million market capitalization since then, representing a 2,100% rise in the token’s unit price since its launch. As in the case of the $SUI token, $PEPE is also available to trade on BitMEX with leverage as high as 50x. In an interview with one crypto news publication, a representative of BitMEX commented on the launch as follows:“PEPE needs a Perp! Perpetual Contracts are the most traded product in crypto and offer all investors taking a long or short position on tokens with better liquidity and fewer network risks. At BitMEX, we offer Tether-margined and Bitcoin-margined perpetual contracts. We are proud to be the inventor of the Perpetual Swap and have long been a leading trading venue for crypto derivatives, offering uncompromised security, a reliable platform, and deep liquidity — as professional traders deserve.”Many commentators in the crypto space have repeatedly pointed to the high risks involved with leverage. In this instance 50x leverage is incredibly high risk, making the product suitable only for those traders that fully and thoroughly understand the risk that comes with such leveraged trading.Photo by Shubham Dhage on Unsplash
