Sony Network Communications and Startale Labs to Launch Joint Blockchain Venture

Prominent Japanese internet service provider Sony Network Communications and Singapore-based Web3 company Startale Labs are undertaking a new joint venture to develop a blockchain network for facilitating the worldwide adoption of Web3.

Cultivating an innovative Web3 ecosystem

This comes after Sony Network Communications’ initial $3.5 million investment in Startale Labs back in June. Both companies expressed their commitment to paving the way for revolutionary Web3 applications through the development of a solid blockchain infrastructure. To do so, they said that they would leverage Sony Group’s knowledge and expertise in various sectors, such as gaming, music, entertainment, and financial services, to apply a multifaceted approach to the joint venture.

“By combining Sony Network Communications’ experience in communication, the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and solution services with Startale Labs’ insights and technical prowess in Web3, we aspire to create a global infrastructure that underpins the Web3 era, driving innovation across existing industries,” said Jun Watanabe, President and Representative Director of Sony Network Communications.

The new business will be established this month under the name Sony Network Communications Labs.

“This joint venture is founded on the synergy created by our respective assets and knowledge, and it is aimed at collectively developing a leading blockchain ecosystem. We are determined to discern Web3 trends and drive them globally,” said Sota Watanabe, CEO of Startale Labs.

 

Governmental support

Sony Group, Sony Network Communications’ parent company, has consistently been making strides in the Web3 realm. Sony Bank, another affiliate of the group, joined hands with Mitsui & Co. Digital Asset Management (MDM) a few months ago to establish MDM’s security token service Alterna.

These efforts have been encouraged by a backdrop of active support for Web3 and crypto businesses from the Japanese government. The Japanese National Tax Agency recently announced the revised corporate taxation rules for crypto assets, which renders companies exempt from taxes on unrealized gains from cryptocurrencies if the virtual assets were issued by the company and have been continuously held since issuance, or if they have remained subject to certain transfer restrictions since issuance.

Startale Labs’ popular smart contract platform Astar Network also recently launched an Ethereum layer 2 scaling solution dubbed Astar zkEVM: Supernova with Polygon Labs in a strategic move to expand Web3 adoption in Japan and onboard more enterprise partners.

The service will support trading for all NFTs available on the NILE marketplace, including the NEITH NFTs unveiled in March this year.Through NFTFi, borrowers have the ability to secure WEMIX tokens or WEMIX Dollars by using NFTs as collateral. Borrowers can request loans, and lenders can review these requests and assess the conditions under which they are willing to lend their assets.The borrower who presents the most favorable borrowing terms will be selected, and the loan contract will be automatically executed. The NFTs provided as collateral will remain locked until the loan is fully repaid. In the event of failure to repay, ownership of the NFTs will be transferred to the lender.Effective asset managementNFTFi users will have the ability to evaluate the value of an NFT based on various data. Notably, NEITH NFTs offer effective asset management as their holders can claim the amount of WEMIX tokens at any time from the Covenant Date. This token eligibility feature contributes to the stability of NEITH NFTs.NILE expects that NFTFi will enhance the value of NFTs as financial assets and play a role in the sustainable growth of the WEMIX3.0 ecosystem.

Metaplanet continues Bitcoin investment despite market fluctuations

Metaplanet, a Japanese investment and consulting firm, has recently announced the acquisition of an additional 42.466 Bitcoins, valued at 400 million Japanese yen ($2.5 million). This purchase increases their total Bitcoin holdings to 203.734 BTC, which were acquired at an average price of approximately 10 million yen ($62,000) per coin—about 7% above the current market price. This move reinforces Metaplanet’s strategy to integrate Bitcoin as a central component of its treasury assets. Market impact and future plansDubbed "Asia’s MicroStrategy" for its aggressive cryptocurrency investment strategy, Metaplanet has seen significant market momentum since its initial Bitcoin purchase in April 2024. The firm's stock surged by 90% the day following its initial announcement. However, following a recent downturn in Bitcoin prices, Metaplanet’s stock experienced a 25% decline from its peak in June. Despite this, the stock price remains 344% higher than at the start of 2024. In response to the volatile market, Metaplanet has announced plans to issue 1 billion yen ($6.26 million) in bonds to fund further Bitcoin acquisitions, signaling continued confidence in the long-term value of Bitcoin as part of its investment strategy.

Fingerlabs teams up with OGN to create Web3 content

Fingerlabs, a subsidiary under South Korean digital marketing firm FSN, has secured a strategic partnership with the OGN gaming television channel to work on a blockchain-based content and IP project by utilizing its Web3 content distribution hub Xclusive, according to local news site Digital Times on Tuesday (KST).Photo by Luis Villasmil on UnsplashFrom Starcraft to the metaverseSince its inception as Ongamenet in 2000, OGN has grown significantly by broadcasting Starcraft matches, thus popularizing esports and leading the global standard for esports broadcasting. After being acquired by global league stats website OP.GG in 2022, OGN has been expanding its range of content to include other, more innovative games and technologies such as VR, XR, and the metaverse. It also recently launched a live channel and VOD service on the popular Korean OTT service Wavve. Through this partnership, the two companies plan to produce and distribute Web3 content through Xclusive by leveraging various IPs owned by OGN. The South Korean market has already been a hotbed of esports since the early 2000s when Starcraft’s popularity skyrocketed. More recently, the country’s interest and reputation in esports has grown exponentially when it hosted the League of Legends World Championship last year. Subsequently, expectations are building for Web3 content based on OGN's IPs. Xclusive’s journeySince it transitioned from a traditional NFT marketplace to a Web3 content distribution platform, Xclusive has teamed up with various projects. This includes the upcoming BTS Universe-based drama "Begins Youth," as well as the popular South Korean singing competition Miss Trot Season 3. This, coupled with the OGN collaboration, is expected to pave the way for Xclusive to expand beyond entertainment-related content and into the gaming industry.
