Coming under scrutiny

The National Assembly passed a resolution back in May titled “The Resolution on Voluntary Reporting and Investigation of Virtual Assets of National Assembly Members,” requesting that all members of the Assembly should voluntarily report the status and changes in their holdings of virtual assets for a thorough investigation by the ACRC amid public concern about conflicts of interest and illegal transactions.

As a result, individual consent forms for the collection, use, and third-party provision of personal information were submitted to the ACRC last Monday by Assembly members of the ruling and opposition parties.

Other minor political parties like the Justice Party, Basic Income Party, and Transition Korea Party that had previously submitted their personal information consent forms have resubmitted their forms in accordance with the format of those submitted by the ruling and opposition parties. Independent lawmakers and some non-negotiation bodies have also voluntarily submitted forms of their own.

Extensive legal probe

The scope of the investigation includes the domestic acquisition, trading, and losses of virtual assets by Assembly members starting from the beginning of their term on May 30, 2020, to May 31, 2023, when their personal information consent forms were submitted. The ACRC will compare this information with reports formerly filed by the members themselves.

The ACRC appointed Vice Chairman and Secretary General Jung Seung-yoon as the head of the team and assigned some 30 investigators to carry out a census for 90 days starting on September 18. It will be executed under the Act On The Prevention Of Corruption And The Establishment And Management Of The Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission and the Personal Information Protection Act.

“As this is an important matter of public interest, we will conduct the investigation promptly and fairly in accordance with the law and guidelines,” said Jung. “We will also strictly protect the data acquired during the investigation process, including the personal information consent forms.”

U.S. authorities seize crypto tied to Asian ‘pig butchering’ scam

U.S. authorities seize crypto tied to Asian ‘pig butchering’ scamThe United States government has taken control of digital currency valued at approximately half a million dollars from an account linked to a Chinese individual implicated in a Reuters investigation into a crypto-investment fraud originating from Southeast Asia.Photo by Growtika on Unsplash‘Pig butchering’According to Reuters, U.S. officials have disclosed that the seized assets are connected to a crypto-investment scam known as “pig butchering,” where fraudsters manipulate unsuspecting individuals they encounter online, convincing them to invest in fraudulent crypto schemes. The unsuspecting scam victim (the pig) is conned by scammers into handing over money with the promise of an outsized return. Once funds have been handed over, the vast majority of victims are unable to recover their money.According to a document filed by U.S. authorities in federal court in Massachusetts, the U.S. Secret Service confiscated the crypto in June from an account registered to Wang Yicheng. At the time of the seizure, the digital currency was valued at around $500,000. The funds were traced back to a victim in Massachusetts who had initially fallen prey to the scam.In a recent Reuters article, Wang was identified as a businessman who cultivated relationships with members of Thailand’s law enforcement and political elite while serving as the vice president of a Chinese trade group based in Bangkok. The report outlined that a crypto account in Wang’s name had received over $90 million in recent years, with at least $9.1 million linked to a crypto wallet associated with pig-butchering scams, as reported by U.S. blockchain analysis firm TRM Labs.Multi-million dollar scamsOne case highlighted in the report involved a California man who was scammed out of approximately $2.7 million, funds that were channeled into the account in Wang’s name. Another example cited in the U.S. court filing detailed a resident of Cambridge, Massachusetts, who was allegedly defrauded of about $478,000 worth of crypto, which ended up in two crypto accounts, one of which belonged to Wang. The U.S. court filing, part of a civil forfeiture action, seeks court approval to take possession of assets linked to the alleged crime. While no criminal charges have been filed, Acting U.S. Attorney Joshua Levy emphasized the use of civil forfeitures to recover funds stolen through crypto fraud schemes, highlighting law enforcement’s adaptability in the face of cryptocurrency transactions’ seemingly elusive nature.Crypto scammers sanctionedIn a related development, authorities in the United Kingdom reported on Friday that individuals operating pig butchering crypto scams in Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos had been sanctioned, in a move coordinated with their counterparts in the U.S. and Canada, alongside the United Nations Human Rights Organization. Many of these cases are understood to involve human trafficking, where individuals are illegally detained and forced to work on pig butchering crypto scams.

Klaytn Foundation partners with CoinMarketCap to support Web3 startups and developers

Klaytn Foundation partners with CoinMarketCap to support Web3 startups and developersThe Klaytn Foundation, South Korean conglomerate Kakao’s Layer 1 public blockchain, announced on Monday (local time) that it has been selected to be one of the official partners of CoinMarketCap Labs (CMC Labs), a Web3 startup accelerator program operated by the crypto information platform CoinMarketCap.Photo by Shubham Dhage on UnsplashEmpowering buildersThe CMC Labs program offers builders an array of benefits that serve to promote their projects, boost discoverability, communicate with users, and more. This includes the “Learn and Earn” campaign, where startup owners can attract users through a system that distributes token rewards after engaging in educational content. The Airdrop Campaign, on the other hand, helps participants keep up to date on a startup project’s important developments, such as price movements. Startups can also promote their projects through a long-form article or YouTube video published on the CMC Deep Dive platform.Fostering the growth of dAppsCoinMarketCap, in turn, has agreed to be a partner in the Ignite On Klaytn (IOK) Program — a program run by the Klaytn Foundation to support promising developers both in Korea and abroad in their endeavors to bring their decentralized apps (dApps) to the Web3 market, thus cultivating the Klaytn ecosystem. Developers stand to benefit because they can concentrate their efforts on product development, while the program provides support for other crucial aspects like wallets, API nodes and development outsourcing.Through this latest collaboration with CoinMarketCap, the Klaytn Foundation plans to assist various projects in their entry into the global market. It also aims to play a bridging role, enabling more projects within the Klaytn ecosystem to participate in the CMC Labs program.“We are looking forward to the mutual participation of Klaytn Foundation and CoinMarketCap in our respective programs, which is expected to provide momentum to Klaytn’s ongoing efforts to expand its reach into Asia and global markets,” explained Seo Sang-min, Representative Director at the Klaytn Foundation.

Safeheron launches world’s first open-sourced Intel SGX TEE for Web3

Safeheron, a Singapore-based provider of digital asset self-custody solutions for institutions, has released the world’s first open-sourced trusted execution environment (TEE) related to Intel Software Guard Extensions (SGX).  The Intel SGX is a hardware-based security technology integrated within some Intel processors. It enables application developers to run application code within a secure isolated environment, while preventing access to that code or modification of it by other applications or by the operating system running on that hardware.Photo by Shubham Dhage on UnsplashAddressing Web3 security & scalability challengesThe Intel SGX enables a TEE, creating a black box for computation. In a blog post published by Safeheron on May 6, the company claimed that its open-source framework “addresses fundamental security and scalability challenges within blockchain and Web3 ecosystems, offering broad potential for deployment across critical scenarios.” The company asserted that the enabling of off-chain TEEs as achieved by its framework, provides for robust blockchain layer-2 scaling, together with privacy-preserving computation. In this way, layer-1 blockchain load can be minimized while enhancing network throughput and verifiability. Safeheron further claimed that this all paves the way for the evolution of a trusted “second execution layer” for decentralized applications. Overcoming Intel SGX complexitySafeheron developed the TEE framework using C++, a high-level object-oriented programming language. The firm open-sourced the SGX framework due to the significant challenges that developing with Intel SGX poses, arising from its complexity and its engineering overhead. On X, the company claimed that the new framework reduces SGX TEE development complexity, enabling developers to build applications securely for blockchain, cloud security and privacy computing. The framework optimizes advanced cryptographic support, enhanced testing capabilities, high-level API design and secure and encrypted file input and output. Moving beyond closed and opaque systemsSafeheron added that it open-sourced the framework as it had seen concern expressed within the Web3 sector regarding the development of closed and opaque systems, with that concern elevated in relation to ongoing security failures related to Web3 platforms. Safeheron CEO Wade Wang told Cointelegraph that in open-sourcing the framework, the firm is “not threatened by competitors,” but that it is concerned about “slow innovation due to closed systems.” The Singaporean firm was established in 2021. It counts HashKey Capital, Bixin Ventures, Antalpha Ventures, M77 Ventures and Kryptos among its investors. Back in 2022, it raised $7 million in a pre-Series A funding round. At the time, the project’s mission was to make private keys, which individuals use to control and self-custody their digital assets, safer. In terms of products offered, the company markets its MPC Node Suite, a white-label solution that allows clients to build out multi-party computation (MPC) wallet-based applications. It also offers Keyless Wallets that facilitate the development of wallets that don’t require traditional keys.  In February crypto exchange platform BYDFi partnered with Safeheron, leveraging its MPC technology and TEE to build out a key management system.
