BitGo CEO Emphasizes Separation of Trading and Custody to Prevent Crypto Bankruptcies

Policy & Regulation·September 07, 2023, 5:51 AM

Mike Belshe, Founder and CEO of digital asset trust company BitGo, emphasized the importance of separating cryptocurrency trading and custody to prevent incidents similar to those involving Mt. Gox and FTX in his keynote speech at Impact, the main conference of Korea Blockchain Week (KBW) 2023.

Established in 2013, BitGo is currently the world’s largest provider of virtual asset custody services, serving more than 1,500 institutions in over 50 countries, including the US, Switzerland, and Germany. Major exchanges like Bitstamp, Korbit, Bullish, Gate.io, and Crypto.com entrust BitGo with safeguarding their virtual assets.

Clear division

During his speech, Belshe repeatedly stressed the need for custody services for the sustainability of the virtual asset ecosystem, asserting that separating trading and custody can enhance trust in the industry and attract traditional financial institutions.

Unlike stock markets, where payment institutions and custodians are separate entities, this kind of separation does not exist in the virtual asset market. To steer traditional financial institutions toward the virtual asset ecosystem, this issue needs to be addressed, Belshe said.

He went on to cite the Mt. Gox hack in 2014 and the FTX collapse last year as examples that underscored the importance of virtual asset custody. Mt. Gox, once the world’s largest Bitcoin exchange, reportedly lost some 650,000 to 850,000 Bitcoins — worth more than $450 million at the time — due to a hacking incident, leading to its bankruptcy. FTX also faced insolvency after it was revealed that it inflated its assets using its native token FTT and that its management was misusing customer investment funds.

Belshe suggested that when Mt. Gox employees discovered the Bitcoin theft during the hack, it was already too late. If custody had been treated separately, the theft could have been detected much faster. Regarding the FTX debacle, he argued that even with just a few auditors, the problems in that situation could have been apprehended. FTX’s ability to provide custody of customer assets themselves led to unauthorized activities, including cross trading and insider trading, ultimately resulting in the misuse of customer funds.

Korea’s favorable conditions

Belshe also assessed that South Korea is well-positioned for the establishment of virtual asset custody systems due to its high trading volume and a solid commitment to drafting crypto-related legislation. Seven such bills are currently underway, reflecting the authorities’ determination to address problems in the ecosystem. Korea thus has the potential to establish itself as a hub in Asia, he said.

Indeed, BitGo’s partnership with Hana Bank to establish a joint venture for digital asset custody services in Korea is driven by these factors. Through its entry into Korea, BitGo aims to share its extensive knowledge and experience in digital asset business institutionalization and investor protection. It will also apply the expertise and strategies it has accumulated through close communication with regulatory authorities and supervisory agencies in various countries, including the US, to support the integration of virtual assets into the regulated framework in Korea.

Belshe commented that through this partnership, BitGo will seek to enhance its understanding of Korea and utilize its technology and expertise to boost confidence in the Korean cryptocurrency market.

Singapore Prime Minister issues warning on AI-generated crypto scam

In a recent announcement on Facebook, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has raised alarm bells about a new form of cyber scam that exploits deep-fake technology. Deep-fake technologyThe Prime Minister highlighted the emergence of deceptive videos utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to create false portrayals of him endorsing cryptocurrency scams. This development underscores the escalating sophistication of online scams and the deployment of advanced technology to mislead the public. Deep-fake technology has emerged as a powerful tool for scammers, enabling them to manipulate genuine footage to produce highly convincing yet entirely fabricated content. In the latest incident, a deep-fake video features Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong endorsing a nonexistent crypto investment platform purportedly associated with entrepreneur Elon Musk. This video, a manipulated version of an interview on CGTN, showcases the concerning level of realism achievable with deep-fake technology. The incident emphasizes the growing trend of utilizing AI in perpetrating scams. Prime Minister Lee underscored the deceptive nature of these videos, articulating the potential damage they could inflict by leading unsuspecting individuals to invest in fraudulent schemes. The Singaporean government maintains a vigilant stance on such scams, consistently urging citizens to exercise caution and verify information from official sources.Photo by Guo Xin Goh on UnsplashPrevious issuesThe exploitation of public figures in financial scams is not a new phenomenon. Prime Minister Lee has been a recurrent target of such scams, dating back to 2018. At that time, the government issued public warnings about Bitcoin investment scams falsely claiming the Prime Minister’s endorsement. More recently, in July, another fake video featuring Lee Hsien Loong surfaced, prompting renewed public warnings. In 2021, the Prime Minister’s name and photograph were used without his consent in an effort to sell cryptocurrency. The data was taken from his X (formerly Twitter) profile. At the time, Lee wrote:“The site’s creators are anonymous, but I have sent an open tweet out to ask that my name and photo be removed from the site immediately, as I have nothing to do with the platform. I urge everyone to remain vigilant when dealing with cryptocurrency platforms.” That was a much less sophisticated identity-related scam. More often than not, scammers and fraudsters tend to be early adopters of technology. That’s proving to be the case with the use of deep-fakes in this instance. A need for cautionAs he did in 2021, Prime Minister Lee has urged the public to exercise caution in light of this more recent incident. He advises against responding to scams promising guaranteed investment returns or giveaways. There’s every sign that the Prime Minister’s warning is warranted. In September it emerged that six Singaporeans lost more than $100,000 when a scammer tricked them into buying tokens on a cryptocurrency trading platform. More recently, five Americans were conned out of $10 million in a scam that involved a spoofed domain of the former Singapore International Monetary Exchange (Simex). This call for public vigilance is part of a broader government effort to address the surge in cyber fraud. These repeated incidents underscore the challenges posed by digital technologies in spreading misinformation and financial fraud.

Indonesia Sees Further Crypto Investor Growth

Indonesia Sees Further Crypto Investor GrowthRecent data released by the Commodity Futures Trading Supervisory Agency (Bappebti) underscores the robust growth of the crypto investment landscape in Indonesia.Photo by Nick Agus Arya on Unsplash10.1% year-on-year increaseAccording to reports published in recent days in local media, as of September 2023, the country boasts 17.91 million crypto investors, marking a noteworthy 0.67% uptick compared to the previous month of August, which registered 17.79 million individuals.Over the span of a year, from September 2022 to September 2023, the Southeast Asian nation witnessed an influx of approximately 1.64 million new crypto investors, showcasing a remarkable 10.1% increase from the 16.27 million reported in September 2022.Emerging from a slowdownWhile this growth signals a positive trend, a noteworthy observation pertains to the deceleration in crypto investor growth from October 2022 to August 2023. The data reveals that during this period, the increase in the number of crypto investors in Indonesia never exceeded 1%. This slowdown can be attributed to the global crypto market’s trend characterized by uncertainty and a downward trajectory.Tirta Karma Senjaya, Head of the Bappebti Commodity Futures Trading Development and Development Bureau, comments on this phenomenon, stating, “Growth in the number of crypto investors in Indonesia continues to increase, but investors are still looking for the right time to buy crypto.”Furthermore, Bappebti highlights a reduction in the value of crypto transactions in Indonesia for September 2023, amounting to IDR 7.96 trillion ($502 million). This marks a decrease of 25.2% when compared to the preceding month, which recorded a total of IDR 10.64 trillion. In contrast to the previous year, this decline reflects a substantial 54.7% contraction from the September 2022 figure of IDR 17.57 trillion.Yudhono Rawis, CEO of Tokocrypto, an Indonesian crypto exchange platform, suggests that global conditions, including economic and regulatory uncertainties, have significantly impacted the crypto market’s evolution, both within Indonesia and worldwide. Despite the recent slowdown in growth, Indonesia’s crypto market continues to exhibit considerable potential.Bitcoin resurgenceYudhono remains optimistic, anticipating that the growth and trading volumes of crypto assets in October will surpass previous records. This optimism stems from the surge in Bitcoin prices, which soared in excess of $35,000 (approximately IDR 556.5 million) towards the end of October. This milestone marks Bitcoin’s highest point in nearly 18 months and signifies a mounting interest in the crypto market on a global scale. In a statement to Voice of Indonesia, Yudhono stated:“We are confident that the growth of investors and transactions will continue to increase. The increase in Bitcoin prices and increasingly strong interest in the crypto market in general are indications that these digital assets are increasingly accepted by society. We hope that this trend will continue and bring benefits to the entire ecosystem crypto.”The crypto investment sector in Indonesia continues to experience steady growth, albeit amid global market fluctuations. With Bitcoin’s resurgence and a growing appetite for digital assets, the outlook for Indonesia’s crypto market is positive.
