NFT domains

NFT domains function as user-friendly addresses that simplify the cumbersome 42-character cryptocurrency wallet address. As part of this new initiative, KICA partnered with the Web3 identity platform, Unstoppable Domains, in February to facilitate the creation of NFT domains specifically for the South Korean market.

An official from KICA emphasized the versatility of NFT domains, noting that a single domain can act as a distinctive username across various dApp platforms. To celebrate the debut of Web3id.kr, KICA is conducting a promotional event between August 17 and September 16. At the end of this event, 100 lucky participants, chosen randomly from those who promote Web3id on their social media accounts, will be awarded credits. These credits can then be redeemed at Unstoppable Domains for an NFT domain.

From Web2 to Web3

KICA, with its 24-year legacy, has been a frontrunner in offering Web2 authentication services such as public key infrastructure (PKI) and biometric solutions, emphasizing its prominence in the Know Your Customer (KYC) authentication sector. The firm is currently ramping up its efforts to stay ahead in the evolving Web3 space. A testament to this is its recent acquisition in August of Digitalzone, a digital certificate solution provider that holds a market share of over 50% in the domestic certificate sector for universities and hospitals.

Mudrex to introduce U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs to Indian investors

Indian cryptocurrency investment platform Mudrex has unveiled plans to provide access to U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) for investors within the world’s most populous country. Serving Indian institutional investorsThis initiative, as disclosed by CEO and co-founder Edul Patel in discussion with local media, marks a particularly significant milestone for Indian institutional investors who previously lacked direct access to spot Bitcoin ETFs, which were predominantly available to retail investors through U.S. stock investing firms. In its initial phase, Mudrex intends to list the top four BTC ETFs from prominent entities including BlackRock, Fidelity and Franklin Templeton. While eleven BTC ETF products currently exist in the United States, most commentators agree that there will be a consolidation with the majority unlikely to survive in the long run. Mudrex will ensure compliance by being registered with the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) of India. The company already provides clients with access to a diverse selection of over 350 cryptocurrencies and crypto baskets, coupled with the provision of actionable insights to help clients reach investment decisions effectively. Patel outlined the rationale behind the product offering, stating:“Seeing the increasing demand for Bitcoin spot ETFs and user requests on our platform in the past few months, we have decided to launch it for Indian investors.”Photo by rupixen on UnsplashPurchased under Liberalized Remittance SchemeMudrex ensures actual transactions are processed through broker partners in the U.S., while its Indian subsidiary facilitates the spot Bitcoin ETF service. This development unfolds amidst a nuanced regulatory environment in India, where regulatory bodies such as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Finance Ministry's Intelligence Unit hold varying stances on cryptocurrency. While the RBI remains cautious about crypto, the Finance Ministry's Intelligence Unit has registered numerous Indian crypto service providers and imposed rigorous taxation policies. Patel expanded on the alignment of spot Bitcoin ETFs with the Liberalized Remittance Scheme (LRS), a framework that simplifies overseas investments for Indian investors. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) prescribes a limit of $250,000 per year for overseas investments by Indians under the LRS. In line with that, Mudrex is facilitating a minimum investment of $5,000 and a maximum of $250,000. Accessing spot Bitcoin ETFs through Mudrex under the LRS framework offers a more tax-efficient avenue compared to domestic crypto exchanges in India. Among Mudrex's clientele, comprising approximately 350 institutions, Patel reveals that around 20 have initiated the process of joining the platform for spot BTC ETF investments. With an anticipated average ticket size of $110,000, this demonstrates a growing appetite among institutional investors for exposure to Bitcoin ETFs facilitated through Mudrex's platform. This move by Mudrex is interesting when contrasted with recent comments made by RBI governor Shaktikanta Das, who suggested that the central bank wasn’t in favor of the offering of such products in India despite the decision by the U.S. authorities to permit spot Bitcoin ETFs. Hong Kong is working towards the approval of such products while hoping to get out in front of the competition by being the first to launch a similar Ethereum-based product. Meanwhile, the London Stock Exchange announced on March 11 that it intends to commence accepting applications for Bitcoin and Ether exchange-traded notes (ETN).

India moves cautiously on CBDC to address privacy concerns

India is strategically navigating the development of its digital rupee, with the Reserve Bank (RBI) actively addressing privacy concerns through technological solutions in its central bank digital currency (CBDC) pilot programs. According to a recent report by CoinDesk, a senior official with insights into these initiatives revealed that while progress is evident, the RBI is proactively exploring ways to ensure privacy in the use of the digital rupee.Photo by Julian Yu on UnsplashPursuing mechanisms to maintain anonymityThe RBI has introduced a new dimension to the discourse on privacy concerns associated with CBDC usage. The central bank official suggested that the RBI may seek legal backing from India’s finance ministry to enact legislation allowing customers to delete transactions for the purpose of maintaining anonymity. New-found urgencyPublic statements from the RBI suggested a lack of urgency in implementing a full-scale retail CBDC, coupled with a reluctance to provide a specific timeline. However, recent events indicate that an underlying sense of urgency may be emerging. In the past month, the retail CBDC achieved a notable milestone, processing one million transactions in a single day, with support from various banks. Several banks, including HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Axis Bank, Canara Bank, IDFC First Bank and Union Bank of India, reportedly encouraged their employees to deposit funds in CBDC instead of fiat currency, contributing to this achievement. The official overseeing the CBDC development emphasized the necessity for experimentation and substantial efforts to ensure the security of the digital currency. While the settlement aspect is considered straightforward, addressing latency remains a priority for the RBI. No mandate on taxThe RBI, historically known for its opposition to crypto both domestically and globally, clarified that crypto taxation is not within its mandate. This clarification suggests that the RBI might not object if the Indian government decides to reduce the stringent taxes currently imposed on cryptocurrencies. The central bank clarified that it lacks the mandate to express a viewpoint on reducing a contentious tax that has stirred debate within the crypto industry. The RBI has been a driving force behind the adoption of wholesale and retail CBDC since late 2022 when it initiated pilot programs. The official emphasized that taxation matters fall under the government’s purview, reinforcing the RBI’s focus on its designated responsibilities. Similarly, the country’s judiciary recently turned down a plea to have it formulate a crypto regulatory framework, outlining that this too is up to the government to address. The central bank has a historical context of attempting to ban cryptocurrencies, with effective prohibitions in place between 2018 and 2020 until a Supreme Court order overturned the ban. Since then, the RBI has consistently expressed concerns about cryptocurrencies in various forums, including the Group of 20, where India played a leading role in coordinating global regulation in the crypto space. Recent utterances from the RBI governor, Shaktikanta Das, suggest that the regulator is disinterested in seeing the offering of spot crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in India despite that eventuality coming to pass last month in the United States. Das also spoke positively recently about the tokenization of real-world assets using blockchain technology.
