OPNX Makes a Play for Struggling Crypto Lender Hodlnaut

Web3 & Enterprise·August 08, 2023, 12:46 AM

In a strategic move OPNX, the crypto claims trading platform associated with the founders of failed Singaporean crypto hedge fund Three Arrows Capital (3AC), is eyeing the acquisition of Hodlnaut, a beleaguered crypto lender currently undergoing court-supervised restructuring in Singapore.

Compelling offer

That’s according to a person familiar with the matter cited by Bloomberg News on Sunday, together with a term sheet seen by Bloomberg. It’s understood that OPNX has presented a compelling offer to infuse Hodlnaut with a much-needed capital injection of approximately $30 million worth of FLEX digital tokens.

These tokens are closely tied to CoinFLEX, a trading platform that ran into difficulty in 2022, co-founded by Mark Lamb and Sudhu Arumugam. The Seychelles-based company rebranded and relaunched as OPNX earlier this year with the 3AC founders on board. The FLEX token holds a current market valuation of around $647 million, according to CoinGecko data.

Partial creditor payout

The OPNX proposal aims to fund a partial creditor payout to facilitate the resolution of pending claims. This proposal comes on the heels of efforts by Hodlnaut’s directors to reach out directly to its users, a move that was met with objections by the interim judicial managers overseeing Hodlnaut’s restructuring. A letter dated July 29 from the administrators confirms this development.

Under the terms of the deal outlined in a term sheet, OPNX’s capital injection through FLEX tokens would translate into a 75% ownership stake in Hodlnaut. The restructuring plan, if approved by creditors, would see these creditors receiving 30% of their claims in FLEX and other tokens. Alternatively, they would be entitled to a pro-rata payment of up to 95% of the total available corporate assets, whichever is more favorable to them.

Hodlnaut, headquartered in Singapore with operations also in Hong Kong, got caught up in crypto market turbulence, leading to a suspension of withdrawals a year ago. Subsequently, it embarked on a court-monitored restructuring journey in Singapore. Neither Hodlnaut nor its judicial managers have provided immediate comments on the OPNX bid.

The founders of Hodlnaut, Simon Lee and Zhu Juntao, had earlier proposed a business sale as a preferable alternative to liquidation. This proposal aimed to provide better outcomes for creditors, who had initially expressed preference for liquidation over a proposed restructuring plan earlier in the year.

OPNX reprimand

The journey of both OPNX and Hodlnaut is also marked by legal and regulatory challenges. In April, authorities in Dubai reprimanded Su Zhu, Kyle Davies, Mark Lamb, OPNX’s CEO Leslie Lamb, and Sudhu Arumugam for operating and promoting OPNX without the required local license. Meanwhile, the liquidators of 3AC have alleged a lack of cooperation by Zhu and Davies, as they seek to recover $1.3 billion from the duo, reflecting the losses preceding the fund’s downfall.

The 3AC founders recently claimed that they would donate OPNX profits to 3AC creditors. However, Kyle Davies is fighting the efforts of the 3AC liquidator to reclaim funds from the founders.

Binance Thailand launches exchange services to the public

Binance, in collaboration with Gulf Innova, a subsidiary of Gulf Energy Development, has officially opened its joint venture crypto exchange, Binance Thailand, for public trading. Challenging the market incumbentThis move had been eight months in the making, signaling Binance's entry into the Thai crypto exchange market, following an announcement in 2023 that it intended to extend its offering to Thailand. While Binance is the largest global crypto exchange platform, in Thailand it will be challenging the dominance of an incumbent exchange. Bitkub is based in Bangkok, currently holding around 77% of the market share, with a daily volume of approximately $30 million, primarily trading the Thai baht and Tether USDT pair.Photo by Sara Dubler on UnsplashRegulatory approvalThe launch comes after Binance received regulatory approval from the local Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in 2023. Initially introduced on an "invitation-only" basis, the exchange is now accessible to all eligible users, with Binance having followed through on its plans to expand its presence in the region. In a statement released on Tuesday, Binance TH announced the implementation of a dedicated order book tailored for Thai baht trading pairs. Users can seamlessly deposit and withdraw local currency through integration with domestic banking systems. Binance has managed to push its service offering forward in Thailand despite regulatory concerns. In the aftermath of the company’s $4.3 billion settlement in relation to securities law violations with the authorities in the United States in November, concerns had been expressed that the charges brought against the firm in the U.S. would challenge the feasibility of the Binance TH venture. At present, the platform focuses solely on spot trading, with a Binance spokesperson revealing ambitious long-term plans for additional services pending regulatory approvals. Nirun Fuwattananukul, CEO of Gulf Binance, expressed gratitude, stating:"We are deeply humbled to finally announce the launch of our local platform to the general public in Thailand. Over the past year, we have been working closely with Thai regulators, putting substantial effort into detailed planning." Binance TH facilitates digital asset exchange services, collaborating with local banks in Thailand in enabling its service offering. The exchange has also partnered with Binance Kazakhstan for brokerage services, operating under the supervision of Thailand’s SEC. Richard Teng, CEO of Binance, emphasized the strategic significance of the venture, stating:“This is a strategic step forward, setting the stage for Thailand’s impending role as a key player in the global digital finance landscape.” No access for foreignersOne limitation of the service pertains to foreign nationals. There is a restriction on access for foreigners residing in Thailand, as Binance TH requires a Thai National Digital ID to complete Know Your Customer procedures. Despite regulatory challenges and tax implications on overseas income from stock and crypto traders announced by the government in September 2023, Binance remains optimistic about the future of crypto trading in Thailand. The exchange released its themes for 2024 report on Jan. 15, outlining key growth areas such as the Bitcoin ecosystem, ownership economy applications, artificial intelligence, real-world assets, on-chain liquidity and institutional adoption.

HashKey & Bosera launch world’s first tokenized money market ETFs

HashKey Group, a Hong Kong-headquartered digital asset financial services firm, has partnered with Bosera Asset Management (International) Co., the Hong Kong subsidiary of Chinese asset management firm Bosera Asset Management, to launch the world’s first tokenized money market exchange-traded funds (ETFs). In a press release published by PR Newswire on behalf of HashKey Group on March 28, HashKey outlined that the two funds are titled “Bosera HKD Money Market ETF (Tokenised Class)” and ”Bosera USD Money Market ETF (Tokenised Class).”While the products were launched last Friday, they won’t officially go live until April. Both products have been approved by Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission (SFC). Photo by Vighnesh Dudani on UnsplashArising out of Project EnsembleThis latest product offering has its origins in Project Ensemble, an initiative launched by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) back in March 2024. The original aim of Project Ensemble was to support the development of the tokenization market in Hong Kong. The SFC got involved later that year, collaborating with the HKMA in the launch of a regulatory sandbox aimed at advancing the tokenization of assets in various financial sectors. In October 2024 it emerged that HashKey was participating within that sandbox, with these new products arising from those efforts. The company claims that these tokenized products improve upon what’s currently on offer via traditional finance, providing greater transparency and operational efficiency, thanks to the use of blockchain technology.  HashKey Tokenisation, the tokenization arm of the firm, takes care of full-process design and execution for tokenized issuance. Subsequently, these products will be deployed on HashKey Chain, a regulatory-compliant, institutional-grade layer-2 network geared towards bridging the gap between traditional finance and Web3. On that subject, HashKey Group Chairman and CEO Dr. Xiao Feng stated:"Bringing money market ETFs on-chain through blockchain technology is a crucial step for traditional finance to embrace Web3.” Looking towards the future, Feng added that the company expects “more traditional financial institutions to actively enter the crypto finance sector through innovative tokenisation products.”Anna Liu, CEO of HashKey Tokenisation, told the South China Morning Post (SCMP) that “the biggest advantages of this product are that the underlying assets are mature and high-quality, and it fully considers security and regulatory compliance while reducing investor costs and improving overall liquidity.” Liu added that the firm hopes that this product offering is the first of many, paving the way for subsequent tokenized real-world asset (RWA) offerings. Last month, Hong Kong-based digital asset platform OSL launched a tokenized mutual fund, the ChinaAMC HKD Digital Money Market Fund. The retail tokenized fund has been issued by China Asset Management (Hong Kong), with Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) acting as tokenization agent, digital platform operator and administrator. In the U.S., financial services company Fidelity Investments recently filed documents with the intention of rolling out a tokenized U.S. money market fund. BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager, launched its tokenized money market fund, BUIDL, last year. The fund is expected to surpass a market cap of $2 billion in the coming weeks.

South Korean Job Seekers to Benefit from Digital Badges for License Credentials

South Korean Job Seekers to Benefit from Digital Badges for License CredentialsSouth Korean job seekers will soon be able to enjoy the convenience of proving their license credentials with digital badges based on non-fungible tokens (NFTs).The South Korean Ministry of Employment and Labor has announced that its affiliate, the Human Resources Development Service of Korea (HRDK), plans to create a mobile application that supports virtual asset wallets. These wallets will allow citizens to conveniently store their HRDK-issued licenses in the form of digital badges.Photo by Gül Işık on PexelsNFT-based digital badgesThese digital badges, which are based on NFTs, will also serve as proof of certification for HRDK’s education and training courses. Decentralized identifiers (DIDs) based on blockchain technology will prevent forgery and counterfeiting and improve personal information protection. The incorporation of gaming elements within NFTs is expected to motivate citizens to engage in continuous learning.Chosen as this year’s state-led blockchain initiative last December, the digital badge project is supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) and the Korea Internet and Security Agency (KISA). HRDK aims to complete the transformation of its 18.5 million issued licenses into digital badges by the end of this year. The project also involves digitizing vocational training certificates issued by the Korea Employment Information Services (KEIS), which has an average annual issuance of 3.6 million certificates. Access to these badges will also be facilitated through not only state-managed mobile ID wallets but also private platform wallets. In the context of employment and career management, individuals have traditionally received paper certificates and had to deliver them to relevant organizations. This process often involved inconvenience, as it required in-person visits, mailing, or scanning. Moreover, individuals faced the hassle of repeatedly obtaining the same certificate due to expiration dates and storage concerns.Seamless certificate managementWith the introduction of the digital badge service, users will be able to download a mobile application on their smart devices. This app will enable them to access their national certificates, allowing them to view their qualification and training completion information at any time. Additionally, users will gain the convenience of instantly submitting or verifying their certificates remotely through their mobile devices whenever necessary.HRDK will further enhance its services through strategic partnerships with credentialing organizations from both the public and private sectors.Kim Young-joong, the Acting President of HRDK, emphasized the significance of national licenses and training certificates as objective measures of individuals’ performance and skills, underscoring their importance in the employment landscape. He further expressed HRDK’s commitment to ensuring customer satisfaction by leveraging cutting-edge technology and efficient data management practices to drive innovation in public services.
