Crypto Trading Surges in South Korea While Global Trends Decline

Markets·August 04, 2023, 7:25 AM

Plunges in global trading volumes

According to an Exchange Review for July 2023 by CCData, a virtual asset data provider, the total global spot trading volumes on centralized exchanges dropped to $515 billion in July, a 10.5% decrease compared to the previous month, marking the second lowest level since 2019. Additionally, derivative trading volumes fell by 12.7% to $1.85 trillion, the second-lowest since December 2020.

Experts attribute these declines to increased regulations on cryptocurrencies worldwide, such as legal crackdowns on exchanges like Binance and Coinbase by the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, recorded a trading volume of $208 billion with a market share of 40.4% in July, marking a five-month consecutive decline, although it still maintained its title as the largest platform worldwide for crypto spot trading.

Coinbase — the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the US — and global exchange OKX also saw a decline in trading volume of 11.6% and 5.75% to $28.6 billion and $29 billion, respectively.

Crypto exchanges flourish in Korea

Contrarily, the majority of major crypto exchanges in Korea experienced significant growth in trading volume. Upbit’s trading volume skyrocketed by 42.3% to $29.8 billion in July, surpassing Coinbase and OKX for the first time to claim the second spot in global cryptocurrency exchanges behind Binance.

Other Korean exchanges also saw remarkable increases in trading volume. Bithumb recorded $6.09 billion, a surge of 27.9%, while Coinone’s volume rose by 4.72% to $1.39 billion.

These spikes in trading volume can be accredited to an increased interest in cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology among citizens throughout the country, despite global regulatory challenges impacting the market. As the cryptocurrency industry continues to evolve, Korean exchanges are showing resilience and maintaining their competitive positions on the global stage.

Crypto Titans Clash on Elon Musk’s X

Crypto Titans Clash on Elon Musk’s XA subtle panel discussion photo posted by Andrei Grachev of Singapore’s DWF Labs turned into a war of words among crypto trading titans on Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter).Photo by Marek Piwnicki on UnsplashDWF vs GSRGrachev, who is a Managing Partner at the market maker and Web3 investment firm, thanked his fellow panelists in the post. However, the tone quickly soured as Cristian Gil, Co-Founder of rival market-making giant GSR, took offense to Grachev’s presence on the panel and voiced his disapproval on the platform.Gil didn’t mince his words, stating: “[Andrei Grachev] had absolutely no business to be on that panel. It’s insulting to [GSR] , [OKX] and [Wintermute] to be in the same room as [DWF Labs].”DWF vs WintermuteHis remarks received a “Like” from Evgeny Gaevoy, the CEO of market maker Wintermute. In response, Grachev defended his presence, asserting that DWF was superior in technology, trading, and business development compared to its rivals, going so far as to suggest to Gil: “Yeah, if I were you — I would be also crying all the time.”The exchange continued with Grachev claiming that DWF was capturing market share from Wintermute, and Gaevoy responded with a nonchalant “lol,” challenging Grachev to invest more if he believed DWF posed a threat.DWF Labs’ rapid growthWhile the exchange consisted of mere words, it shed light on DWF Labs’ sudden rise to prominence earlier over recent months. The company has featured prominently in an array of investments in Web3 startups and blockchain networks over the course of 2023. Prominent among them have been investments in EOS, the Algorand ecosystem, and the TRON ecosystem.Recently appearing on the BlockBeats podcast, Grachev defended the company, outlining that it was not involved in market manipulation in response to recent assertions to the contrary.“We do not engage in any manipulative behavior,” Grachev stated. “Of course, we have the futures market, which is a tool for hedging positions and trading clubs. We are completely different from directional traders,” he added.Gaevoy added some humor to the mix by sharing a meme, raising questions about the maturity level of these prominent figures in the crypto industry. The spat provoked a broad array of commentary from the crypto community.Crypto immaturityThe very public clash raises concerns about how traditional Wall Street firms, currently making bold moves into the crypto space, might perceive such behavior. Notably, firms like BlackRock have been involved in Bitcoin ETF applications, signaling a growing interest in cryptocurrency among mainstream financial institutions. In response to Gaevoy and Grachev, one commentator wrote: “The institutions are never coming back.”While it would appear that there’s no love lost between DWF, GSR, and Wintermute, it also seems evident that both market makers can agree on Singapore as being an appropriate location from where to operate a crypto business. While Wintermute is London-based, it revealed recently that it was expanding its operations in Singapore. Like Wintermute, GSR is primarily based in London although it too maintains a presence in Singapore to service Asia-centric business.

China Launches Digital Yuan ATMs in Hainan Resort City of Sanya

China Launches Digital Yuan ATMs in Hainan Resort City of SanyaThe latest in a long list of initiatives to bring about further use of China’s digital yuan has seen the introduction of e-CNY ATM machines within the resort city of Sanya on Hainan Island. That’s according to a recent report published by the South China Morning Post (SCMP).Photo by Monstera on PexelsInternational currency exchangeThe introduction of e-CNY foreign exchange machines aims to provide visitors with easy access to digital payments and enhance their experience in the local mobile payments ecosystem. Resembling traditional ATMs, these machines allow tourists to deposit 20 different currencies, including US dollars and euros, and receive a physical card loaded with e-CNY in return. The card can be used for seamless payments at participating merchants with a simple tap. Travelers can also use the machines to top up their e-CNY balance, check transaction records, and manage their funds. This initiative addresses the needs of tourists who often face challenges setting up Chinese mobile wallets, which have become essential for retail, dining, transportation, and shopping. These mobile wallets typically require real-name verification and a local bank account, posing difficulties for foreign visitors. While limited prepaid options have been available in recent years, the e-CNY card now offers a convenient digital payment solution without the need to download a separate app. The machines are currently available in two cities, with the Bank of China (BOC), one of 11 authorized banks for e-CNY, leading the development of these innovative devices.Earlier this year, BOC launched a similar foreign exchange machine at Yiwu International Trade City in Zhejiang province, emphasizing China’s efforts to promote digital currency and facilitate financial accessibility. Both Zhejiang and Hainan have been striving to become attractive destinations for foreign tourists and merchants. In May, administrators within the local government in Jiangsu Province confirmed that they would be launching an initiative to promote use of the digital currency within the local education system. The introduction of these machines aligns with Beijing’s mission to develop and promote its sovereign digital currency, known as the Digital Currency Electronic Payment (DCEP). The project, which began trials in 2019, aimed to enhance financial inclusion and digital finance accessibility for unbanked individuals.Digital yuan internationalizationChina has been actively pursuing the internationalization of the digital yuan, seeking to facilitate yuan-denominated trade and investment, while reducing reliance on the existing global financial system. In May, the BOC entered into a partnership with French financial services firm BNP Paribas that will see the company promote e-CNY to its corporate clients.China’s efforts to promote cross-border use of e-CNY extend to regions like Hong Kong, a key offshore yuan center. A trial of the e-CNY for cross-border payments took place last year, facilitating more than 150 million yuan ($22 million) of cross-border e-CNY transfers in 160 payments, involving 20 commercial banks in Hong Kong, Thailand, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).As China continues to make inroads where adoption and use of the e-CNY are concerned, these developments signal a significant shift in the way we can expect sovereign currencies to be made available globally.
