KuCoin Dismisses Notion of a Layoff Plan

Web3 & Enterprise·July 27, 2023, 1:08 AM

Amidst recent rumors of significant layoffs at Seychelles-based cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin, the company’s CEO has come forward to deny any such plans.

While not refuting the possibility of staff reductions, KuCoin’s CEO, Johnny Lyu, took issue with the term “layoffs,” asserting that it was a reevaluation of the organization’s structure rather than job terminations. The speculations about staff cuts were first reported by Colin Wu of Wu Blockchain on Twitter.

Alleged 30% workforce reduction

According to his sources, KuCoin was planning to layoff around 30% of its workforce, attributing the alleged measure to a strict know-your-customer (KYC) policy that had impacted the firm’s profits.

The KYC policy in question was introduced after KuCoin faced legal action from the United States. In March, the New York Attorney General accused the exchange of violating securities and commodities laws, leading to the implementation of the more stringent KYC measures.

Routine bi-annual appraisals

Instead, Lyu has clarified that any adjustments to the company’s headcount were a result of routine bi-annual appraisals aimed at maintaining competitiveness in the market.

Taking to Twitter on Tuesday, Lyu referred to the layoff reports as “rumors.” He emphasized that the company regularly evaluates its organizational structure based on employee performance and overall company development to ensure dynamism and competitiveness.

The Kucoin CEO pointed to a recent report issued by the company as evidence of the exchange’s ongoing growth. The report revealed that the firm had added 300 new employees in the first half of the year. It also mentioned that KuCoin was in the process of upgrading its KYC authentication systems to enhance user asset security, comply with global compliance requirements, and create a safer trading environment.

Despite the speculation and policy changes, KuCoin ranks 11th in terms of “trust score” among other exchanges, according to CoinGecko. Over the past day, the exchange notched up an impressive $327 million in trading volume.

KYC policy change

Recently, KuCoin updated its KYC policy, requiring newly registered users to complete the KYC process to access the exchange’s products and services. Existing registered users who had not completed KYC by the deadline faced restrictions on their accounts, limiting certain activities but allowing fund withdrawals.

The update to the KYC policy had a notable impact on KuCoin’s trading volume. A day after the announcement, trading volume skyrocketed to $6.8 billion from the previous day’s $500 million, according to CoinGecko data.

Lyu has pledged to continue investing in the company’s core businesses while providing users with the exceptional trading experience they’ve been promised.

KuCoin may have dispelled rumors of widespread layoffs and clarified that any staff adjustments were part of routine organizational development. However, there’s no doubt that the crypto exchange business is going through a difficult period.

Most exchanges have suffered due to regulatory pushback, particularly those that have focused their activities in the United States. Earlier this month, global exchange Binance cut 1,000 jobs with plans to make further cuts in the future.

China’s GAPP proposes ban on gaming crypto token conversion

China’s GAPP proposes ban on gaming crypto token conversionChina’s gaming industry hit a significant speed bump on Friday as the General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP) unveiled a draft proposing substantial changes to the regulation of in-game tokens, signaling a strategic shift in the country’s stance on digital currencies in gaming.Photo by blurrystock on UnsplashImplementing more stringent controlsThe proposed regulations by GAPP bring about a ban on the conversion of game tokens into physical goods or legal tender. These guidelines, spanning 64 articles, impose stringent requirements on gaming companies. These include mandatory licensing in China, a two-year data retention policy, adherence to national and socialist values in content and the eradication of anonymous user registrations. One significant aspect of the guidelines is Article 23, which specifically addresses the use of game tokens. It proposes restrictions on exchanging them for physical goods, services or legal tender. The regulatory landscape becomes more complex due to the ambiguity surrounding cryptocurrencies, which are not recognized as legal tender in China. Although a warning was issued about the risks inherent in non-fungible tokens (NFTs), they remain legal in China. NFTs feature prominently within blockchain-based gaming.Game providers are also confronted with new limitations on inducements, such as bonuses for registration or daily logins, and are mandated to implement measures against irrational consumer spending.Gaming sector falloutIn the wake of these developments, several Chinese tech giants experienced a significant market downturn in Hong Kong. Tencent, a global gaming powerhouse and one of China’s most valuable companies, saw a 12.4% drop on Friday, marking its worst day since October 2008. This decline erased a massive 367 billion Hong Kong dollars ($47 billion) from Tencent’s market value.NetEase, another gaming giant, witnessed a 25% dive in Hong Kong afternoon trade, recording its most substantial daily loss since its listing in June 2020. Additionally, Bilibili and Kuaishou, prominent players in video-sharing and short-video platforms, experienced declines of 9.7% and 7.2%, respectively, given their involvement in online gaming.Market uncertaintyWith this latest development, the future of gaming crypto tokens remains uncertain in China, with investor confidence having been hit hard. Putting the matter in context on Friday, Stansberry Research Analyst Brian Tycangco took to the X social media platform, stating:”Govt regulation will effectively render prevailing business models irrelevant due to uncertainty regarding monetization. Games are inherently reward-based and if you clamp down on the use of rewards/incentives, you turn an entire industry on its head.”The guidelines, open for public consultation until Jan. 22, 2024, have not yet been legally enacted. This time frame allows for feedback and potential adjustments before enforcement.Notably, the Web3 gaming sector has witnessed substantial activity, with approximately a million unique active wallets engaged daily over the past three months, according to DappRadar. Industry experts, including Yat Siu of Animoca Brands, anticipate a potential surge in user engagement, emphasizing the potential impact of these regulations on the gaming industry’s trajectory.

Research Finds Over 90% of Korean Cryptos Prone to Pump-and-Dump Schemes

Research Finds Over 90% of Korean Cryptos Prone to Pump-and-Dump SchemesThe Korea Institute of Finance (KIF) has released a report revealing that 91.3% of South Korean-issued cryptocurrencies, known as “kimchi coins,” are prone to pump-and-dump (P&D) schemes. These schemes involve intentionally spreading false information on social media platforms to manipulate token prices. This is done with the intention of selling the tokens at artificially inflated prices.Photo by Maxim Hopman on UnsplashP&D prevalenceThese manipulative practices were frequently observed during the rapid growth of the cryptocurrency market from 2020 to 2022. Previous research papers indicate that P&D schemes commonly occur on multiple crypto exchanges and typically unfold within a time frame of 10 minutes. It has been observed that cryptocurrencies with lower liquidity and smaller market capitalization are particularly vulnerable to becoming prime targets for these schemes.Korean market and global marketThe Korean cryptocurrency market stands out with its significant number of cryptocurrencies listed on a single exchange, including kimchi coins. This distinction becomes evident when comparing it to the global market. In the Korean market, the top 10 global cryptocurrencies, ranked by their market capitalization, account for 59% of the total market share. Meanwhile, in the global market, they represent 84.9%. This contrast indicates that the Korean market has a larger proportion of alternative coins, also known as altcoins, which are more susceptible to pump-and-dump schemes and other manipulative activities.According to a survey conducted by the Financial Services Commission in the second half of 2022, there were a total of 625 listed coins (excluding duplicate listings), with 389 (62.24%) of them being listed on a single exchange. Among these single-exchange listed cryptos, 223 were kimchi coins, which is equivalent to 57%.OHLCV data analysisIn this KIF paper, research analyst Baik Yeon-ju delved into abnormal price patterns within the Korean cryptocurrency market. She analyzed the hourly Open-High-Low-Close-Volume (OHLCV) data of kimchi coins in October 2021. The study revealed that out of a total of 16,560 hourly price and volume observations, approximately 4.7% exhibited characteristics consistent with P&D schemes. Baik noted that 91.3% (21 of the 23) observed kimchi coins witnessed such movements.Legislative effortsMeanwhile, it is encouraging that the South Korean National Assembly passed the Virtual Asset User Protection Bill during its plenary session on June 30. This legislation, set to go effective in July next year, aims to provide protection for customers’ assets in the virtual asset space. The act not only establishes regulations to combat unfair trading practices but also enforces penalties for non-compliance.Call for further measuresHowever, Baik suggested that policies should be further strengthened to enhance investor protection within the crypto market. In order to achieve this, she proposed the implementation of a monitoring system for virtual asset service operators (VASPs) and the allocation of inspection and investigation personnel, as well as technical resources. It is also necessary to address potential conflicts that may arise with the Act on Real Name Financial Transactions and Confidentiality, particularly if the data required from VASPs falls under the classification of financial transaction information and personal information.Furthermore, considering the lack of transparency surrounding many altcoins regarding their projects and exchange listings, Baik suggests that the upcoming second virtual asset bill should tackle this issue by regulating the issuance and disclosure of these cryptocurrencies. Additionally, she highlighted the importance of conducting research based on empirical data to detect abnormal transactions. This approach enables the recognition of existing issues and the acquisition of concrete evidence, which serves as a credible basis for policymakers to enact relevant legislation.
