Web3 game popularization

Through this collaboration, LINE NEXT will introduce Sega-licensed games on its NFT-based gaming platform, GAME DOSI, with the aim of popularizing Web3 games. GAME DOSI will provide functionalities such as NFT creation, easy payment, and marketing. While the specific lineup of games and their details will be revealed at a later date, LINE NEXT CEO Ko Young-su expressed his belief that this MOU with Sega will bring new elements of joy to global gamers, emphasizing that the NFT company is dedicated to delivering readily enjoyable Web3 content not only to Sega fans but to everyone through GAME DOSI.

Launched in May, GAME DOSI focuses on user-oriented games with the slogan “Gamer First, Web3 Next.” The platform has recently unveiled several new games, including Sweet Monster Guardians (a village defense game); Vestria the Last Order, also known as V.L.O, (a roguelite role-playing game); and KEROZ (a hack and slash game). Additionally, GAME DOSI is actively involved in Project GD, an initiative aimed at developing a diverse range of games based on its own intellectual properties.

LINE NEXT’s NFT endeavors

In its efforts to attract NFT enthusiasts, LINE NEXT has undertaken various projects. Last month, it introduced DOSI Land, a program that rewards users with the FINSCHIA token (FNSA). FNSA is currently listed on crypto exchanges Bithumb, Bittrex, Huobi, and Gate.io, according to crypto market data website CoinMarketCap.

Sega’s blockchain hesitancy

Meanwhile, it was reported earlier that Sega has been rethinking its involvement in blockchain gaming. Shuji Utsumi, the Co-Chief Operating Officer of Sega, recently stated in an interview with Bloomberg that the company intends to protect the value of its content by withholding from participating in third-party blockchain gaming projects. Utsumi expressed his belief in the importance of the fun element in games, while he described “play-to-earn” (P2E) blockchain games as “boring.” P2E games refer to those that enable players to earn tokens as rewards for completing specific tasks or winning battles against other players.

Animoca Brands publishes positive financials in investor update

Hong Kong-based blockchain gaming and venture capital firm Animoca Brands has revealed a positive set of financial results in a recently published report.  In an investor update published to its website on March 5, the firm revealed key unaudited financials and business highlights for Q4 2024 and the previous 12 months ending on Dec. 31, 2024. Whereas other sectors report actual revenue figures, the gaming sector relies upon “bookings,” a measure of total sales and income generating activity of the company. The firm reported bookings of $314 million for last year. Compared with 2023, when Animoca reported bookings of $280 million, the firm has achieved a year-on-year increase of 12%.Photo by Lukas on PexelsAdvisory business growthThe company broke that financial measure down further, indicating that of the $314 million in sales and other income-generating activity, its Digital Asset Advisory (DAA) business accounted for $165 million of the overall amount. This disclosure is notable given that it represents a 116% increase, demonstrating a considerable growth in the firm’s advisory business and a diversification of its revenue streams. Animoca’s DAA business offers Web3 projects access to token advisory, and more specifically, consultation regarding tokenomics, marketing and listing. The business also consults in relation to node operation and trading services. Given that the company reported that bookings related to Web3 businesses weighed in at $110 million, Animoca’s advisory business has overtaken the contribution made by its Web3 businesses.  Contributing Web3 businessesAmong the Web3 businesses that made the greatest contributions were The Sandbox, Moca Network, Anichess, Gamee, nWay, Open Campus, TinyTap, Animoca Brands Japan, Eden Games, Blowfish Studios, Pixowl and Crazy Defense Heroes (TOWER). Bookings also included revenue generated via portfolio investments and partnerships. The company recorded $39 million, achieved through investment activities. In discussion with Cointelegraph, Animoca Brands co-founder and executive chairman, Yat Siu, said that the positive bookings numbers were a consequence of the firm’s ongoing efforts to innovate. He stated: “In 2024, we placed less emphasis on the US market, owing to various regulatory struggles experienced by other companies, and we also became more focused on providing support to the companies in our portfolio.” Animoca’s balance sheet holdings were robust in 2024, with $293 million in stablecoins and cash and $538 million in digital assets. Additionally, $538 million in off-balance sheet token reserves was reported. Stablecoin initiativeThe firm has developed a particular interest in the stablecoin sector through a partnership with British multinational financial services firm Standard Chartered and telecommunications firm HKT. That initiative involves the formation of a joint venture company which will go forward to issue a Hong Kong dollar (HKD)-backed stablecoin once a license has been secured from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA). Siu identified real-world asset (RWA) tokenization as another growth area for the company. The Animoca Brands co-founder outlined that he expects the firm to record further growth as 2025 progresses. Notwithstanding that, he warned that such expectations may be affected by adverse economic developments and risks, including the tariffs policy being pursued by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Kaspersky Says Crypto Phishing on the Rise in the Philippines

Kaspersky Says Crypto Phishing on the Rise in the PhilippinesThe Philippines witnessed a significant increase in detected cryptocurrency-related attacks last year while Vietnam recorded the highest level in Southeast Asia, according to cybersecurity firm Kaspersky.Photo by Markus Spiske on UnsplashEase of crypto accessVietnam topped the list with over 64,000 detections. Meanwhile, the Philippines recorded 24,737 cases of crypto-phishing attacks in 2022, up from 9,164 cases in 2021, making it the second-highest number in Southeast Asia.Adrian Hia, Managing Director for Asia Pacific at Kaspersky, attributed the rise to the ease of accessing cryptocurrency in the Philippines. He explained that as users increasingly turn to mobile devices, they are inadvertently exposing themselves to potential breaches, as malware can be installed through various touch points.Research published by Malaysian crypto data aggregator, CoinGecko, earlier this month, also points to the Philippines as having the second highest level of interest in crypto in Southeast Asia, after Singapore.Targeting popular platformsCybercriminals commonly target accounts of popular online gaming platforms and crypto wallets using advanced stealers or “stalkerware” that allow them to spy on individuals through their mobile devices, Kaspersky stated. The firm’s monitoring data revealed that malware is spreading through legitimate channels such as official marketplaces and advertisements in popular apps.Across Southeast Asia, the total number of crypto-phishing detections decreased to 147,649 in 2022 from 164,330 in 2021, according to Kaspersky. However, only Singapore (down 74%), Thailand (down 51%), and Vietnam (down 15%) observed declines in detections. Besides the Philippines, crypto-related attacks also increased in Indonesia (from 19,584 in 2021 to 24,642 in 2022) and Malaysia (from 16,071 to 16,767).Kaspersky discovered an average of 400,003 new malicious files per day in 2022, representing an increase of 20,000 files per day compared to the previous year. Hia emphasized that scammers are relentless in their efforts to steal cryptocurrency due to its increasing popularity and adoption, particularly in Southeast Asia. He urged cryptocurrency adopters in the region to stay informed about the latest tricks used by crypto phishers to protect their digital assets.Email-based attacksRoman Dedenok, a spam analysis expert at Kaspersky, revealed that crypto phishers often employ email-based attacks to target crypto users. He explained that scammers entice victims with the prospect of participating in a cryptocurrency giveaway, offering popular digital assets such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Tron, or Ripple. The scammers provide a three-point guide to claim the free cryptocurrency along with a link to the “promotion” website. Clicking on the link leads users to a phishing site where they are prompted to specify the wallet to which they want the funds transferred. In response to the growing cybersecurity concerns, Kaspersky is engaging in discussions with government institutions worldwide. In the Philippines, while the central bank does not directly regulate cryptocurrency, it has established guidelines for virtual asset service providers. The Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the Philippines, Emilio Aquino, recently delayed publication of a regulatory framework for crypto, on the basis of having “to make sure people don’t get burned.”Entities involved with virtual assets are required to obtain a license from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, the central bank of the Philippines, to comply with regulations.
