New Kazakh Platform Underscores Binance’s Push Eastwards

Policy & Regulation·June 22, 2023, 12:46 AM

Global cryptocurrency exchange Binance is making a significant move towards the East in response to mounting regulatory challenges in Western markets. The exchange has recently launched a regulated digital asset platform in Kazakhstan, marking a milestone in its expansion strategy.

The announcement was made during a press conference held on June 20, attended by distinguished guests including representatives from Kazakhstan’s banking sector and Binance Kazakhstan’s leadership. The company followed up with a blog post detailing the development, published to its website on Wednesday.

This milestone achievement follows Binance’s preliminary approval for operations in Kazakhstan received last August. By October, the Astana Financial Services Authority (AIFC) granted the exchange a permanent license to establish a digital asset platform and provide custodial services at the Astana International Financial Center.

Bespoke platform

The newly established Binance platform in Kazakhstan aims to cater specifically to the needs of Kazakhstani users. It offers a comprehensive suite of services encompassing cryptocurrency exchange, conversion, fiat currency deposits and withdrawals, as well as custody of crypto assets.

These financial services will be facilitated through a partnership with Freedom Finance Bank, Kazakhstan’s banking partner for Binance. Users of the platform will be able to transfer fiat funds to their accounts, with deposits and withdrawals currently supported through bank transfers or bank cards via Freedom Finance Bank.

Adverse Western market conditions

Binance’s expansion into Kazakhstan comes at a time when the exchange is grappling with legal challenges in the United States and several European countries. In the US, Binance is currently embroiled in a lawsuit with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).

Last month, Binance announced its withdrawal from the Canadian market, citing regulatory changes which the company described as “untenable.” Meanwhile, in Europe, the company has faced regulatory pushback, including an investigation into alleged “aggravated money laundering” in France and its exit from the Dutch market due to the absence of a virtual asset service provider license.

Binance’s withdrawal from European markets has been attributed to its efforts to comply with the European Union’s approved Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) regulations, although there are reports indicating collaboration between European regulators and the SEC in their investigations into Binance.

Eastern expansion

While Binance has been facing ongoing setbacks in Western markets, it continues to expand eastwards. Late last month, the firm announced plans to establish a dedicated platform in Japan. Around the same time, it secured a trading license through its Thai joint venture company.

Binance is not the only major crypto firm making a strategic shift towards Asia. Other global cryptocurrency exchanges such as Gemini and Coinbase, have also expressed their intention to strengthen their presence in the Asia Pacific region. This trend highlights a broader pattern of the crypto exchange landscape gradually shifting towards the East, reflecting a reconfiguration of the global market.

As Binance expands its regulated operations in Kazakhstan, it aims to navigate the complex regulatory environment and continue providing secure and compliant services to users in a key market. The move not only positions Binance strategically but also underscores the evolving dynamics that may well be playing into a regional shift in leadership where the development of digital assets is concerned.

KuCoin Halts Bitcoin and Litecoin Mining Pools Amidst Strategic Shift

KuCoin Halts Bitcoin and Litecoin Mining Pools Amidst Strategic ShiftIn an announcement on Tuesday, Seychelles-based cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin revealed its decision to temporarily suspend its Bitcoin and Litecoin mining pools, effective from 16:00:00 on August 15, 2023 (UTC).Photo by Traxer on UnsplashChanging business strategyThis move is attributed to KuCoin’s evolving business strategy, although specific details remain undisclosed. The exchange expressed its regret for any inconvenience caused and extended gratitude for users’ continued support. It appears that the company wants to focus on core business activities and for that reason, it’s terminating its mining pool activity. That said, the discontinuation was described in its statement as being “temporary” although that has been left open-ended with no indication of if or when it would bring the service back into operation. The company is open to the idea of revisiting the facilitation of mining pools in the future. “We will see if it is needed to restart based on the market and users’ demand in the future,” a spokesperson for the company told The Block. To ensure miners’ uninterrupted earnings during the suspension, KuCoin advised users engaged in cryptocurrency mining to transition their Bitcoin (BTC) and Litecoin (LTC) miners to alternative mining pools before the specified suspension date. Additionally, the exchange emphasized the importance of backing up and preserving mining records and related data, recommending users complete these actions before August 27.Presently, the KuCoin Bitcoin mining pool maintains a hash rate of 9.08 exahash per second (EH/s), while the Litecoin pool operates at 3.90 terrahash per second (TH/s). These figures contribute to the broader hash rate landscape, where the entire Bitcoin network boasts a hash rate of 349.19 EH/s, compared to the Litecoin network’s 792.16 TH/s.Workforce reductionIt is clear that the company is in the process of adjusting to current market conditions. Last week, rumors surfaced of a plan to effect a workforce reduction. That prompted KuCoin’s CEO Johnny Lyu to respond, clarifying that the exchange’s operations are running smoothly. Dismissing layoff speculation, Lyu highlighted the exchange’s steady expansion and strong growth as demonstrated by the H1 2023 report. The report showcased an increase in users and new listings, underscoring the platform’s vitality and development.Mandatory KYCIn recent months, KuCoin has also implemented mandatory Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements, obligating users to undergo verification processes. Existing customers who fail to complete KYC procedures will be unable to make deposits. With over 20 million registered accounts, the exchange felt that it needed to improve on its level of regulatory compliance and security measures. It’s highly likely that an action taken by authorities in New York in the United States in March prompted KuCoin’s decision to tighten up on KYC. At that time, the New York Attorney General said that action was being taken against KuCoin due to its failure to register as a securities and commodities broker-dealer.As KuCoin undergoes these changes, the suspension of its mining pools raises questions about the broader implications for its business strategy and the potential impact on miners within its ecosystem. That said, the firm is not alone in making changes, with most crypto exchanges having had to adjust to a business and regulatory environment that has changed considerably since the 2021 crypto bull run.

Subreddit Token Price Slide Following Surge

Subreddit Token Price Slide Following SurgeReddit’s subreddit community tokens, Moon and Brick, having experienced a remarkable surge in prices last week fueled by a significant increase in trading volume, have taken a downward trajectory, plummeting in price.Photo by Mike Petrucci on UnsplashCrypto.com token listingThe Moon token, associated with Reddit’s r/CryptoCurrency community boasting over 6.5 million members, shot up from approximately $0.09 to nearly $0.58 on July 19, just after Singapore trading platform Crypto.com listed the token.Concurrently, trading volume spiked to around $3 million on Wednesday, marking an impressive boost.Similarly, the Fortnite subreddit community token, Brick, which Crypto.com distributes as a reward to contributors of r/Fortnite, also witnessed a substantial price surge. The token’s value surged from $0.01 on July 17 to approximately $0.10 on July 19, according to data from CoinGecko.Surge acknowledgedIn response to the sudden price surges, Crypto.com released a note early on Monday, acknowledging the surge both tokens had experienced recently. However, in a swift turn of events, both tokens experienced a significant downturn in the past 24 hours, with their prices plummeting by over 20%.As of midday (ET) on Monday, Moon was trading at $0.33, while Brick was valued just under $0.05, as reported by CoinGecko data. Moreover, trading volumes for both tokens have significantly contracted during this period of volatility. Moon’s volume shrank from over $1 million on July 23 to approximately $200,000 on Monday. On the other hand, Brick’s volume saw an even more drastic decrease, falling from approximately $210,000 on July 23 to a mere $26,000 on Monday.Terms of service changeMarket analysts speculate that the recent change in Reddit’s Terms of Service might have been the catalyst for the initial price increases. Reddit’s alteration of its Terms of Service on July 16 to permit users to trade community tokens and avatars potentially triggered the surge in token prices. It appears that Web2 centralized virtual goods such as coins and awards are making way for tradable Web3 community points.Speculating on the token price surge, Bobby Ong, the Co-Founder and COO of Malaysia-headquartered cryptocurrency data aggregator CoinGecko, wrote via Twitter last week: “Both tokens increased at the speculation of the changes coming at Reddit. No one knows exactly what is happening but Reddit deprecating Web2 Coins & Awards while allowing trading of their Web3 CPs could be something to monitor in the coming months.”Despite the recent downturn, the overall crypto space remains highly dynamic and unpredictable. Events such as the listing of tokens on prominent trading platforms can cause rapid price fluctuations. As always, that scenario makes it essential for investors to approach these assets with caution. While Moon and Brick may have encountered a sharp decline, the cryptocurrency market, in general, has proven its resilience and ability to rebound with Bitcoin currently holding a unit price of $29,125. As the market continues to evolve and gain wider acceptance, investors will need to continue to exercise caution and consider the volatility inherent in digital assets.
