OmniBOLT to Support BRC-20 Tokens on Lightning

Web3 & Enterprise·May 10, 2023, 12:32 AM

Singapore’s OmniBOLT, a project that’s developing technological solutions within bitcoin’s layer two network environment, has outlined that it will support BRC-20 tokens on Lightning Network.

Before we consider precisely what OnmiBOLT's decision to support BRC-20 tokens means, let’s cover the backstory.

BRC-20

BRC-20 is an experimental token standard which was created by an anonymous developer with the handle “Domo”, and username ‘@domodata’ on Twitter. A token standard governs how and where a cryptocurrency can be used. The approach has been pioneered by developers on the Ethereum blockchain who created the ERC-20 standard a number of years ago, relative to the Ethereum network.

A bitcoin evolution

In this instance, BRC-20 is a fungible token standard designed for the bitcoin blockchain. Bitcoin development is very slow and conservative, and deliberately so, in an effort to put network security first. However, it has had two major upgrades over the course of the last few years, namely SegWit and Taproot.

Many in crypto have been critical of the bitcoin project on the basis of it being a pet rock that lacked features and the flexibility to use it in other ways aside from as a store of value or means of exchange. However, those protocol upgrades have led to further development that is expanding bitcoin’s use case and versatility.

SegWit and Taproot enabled the development of Bitcoin Ordinals in January 2023. Ordinals provide a means to create Bitcoin non-fungible tokens (NFTs), by attaching data to individual satoshis, the smallest denomination of Bitcoin. NFTs created this way are immutable as they’re not created on side chains but on the bitcoin blockchain itself.

In a fast moving scenario, the development of Ordinals led two months later to the emergence of the BRC-20 standard. BRC-20 tokens can be stored on the bitcoin base-chain, built with the assistance of Ordinals. BRC-20 is an exciting development as it stands to enable smart contract capabilities relative to bitcoin.

Solving the bitcoin fee issue

Many see this development as a solution for the longer term fees issue that the bitcoin blockchain will have to overcome. Bitcoin miners are compensated in mining rewards but the level of rewards is being cut in half every four years. The concern is that in the longer term, there may not be enough revenue for miners to continue to secure the network effectively.

With the development of Bitcoin Ordinals, more fees are generated, and so this is seen as a means through which the network can sustain itself over the longer term.

Mempool backlog

So what’s not to like? The issue that has arisen over the past few days is that bitcoin transaction fees have hit a two year high. Over the past few days, there have been in excess of 400,000 unconfirmed bitcoin network transactions sitting in the mempool. The mempool is a mechanism within the bitcoin protocol that stores the data relative to a queue of transactions that are waiting to be confirmed.

Relieving pressure on bitcoin

That brings us back to the significance of the Singaporean team of developers at OmniBOLT deciding to support BRC-20 tokens on the lightning network. That move can relieve the pressure on the bitcoin mainnet. The project is being backed by Waterdrip Capital, Danhua Capital, Redline DAO and others.

Bitcoin has been a boring protocol and many have celebrated that fact as a feature and benefit for a network that serves a couple of vitally important use cases exceptionally well. However, development never stops and it’s fascinating to see another side to the protocol unfold, and all the while, it’s not entirely clear where it will end.

Binance collaborates with Indian authorities to dismantle scam app

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) — an Indian law enforcement agency — seized 90 crores ($10.5 million) from an online scam app called E-Nuggets with the help of global crypto exchange Binance.  ED is the governmental law enforcement agency responsible for enforcing economic laws and with that, tackling economic crime. According to a report published by Indian English language daily newspaper The Hindu, the online gaming app E-Nugget had cryptocurrencies worth $10 million stored in 70 different crypto wallet accounts spread across the three crypto exchanges.  Local Indian exchanges ZebPay and WazirX also aided the ED in its investigations and subsequent actions. The ED contacted these exchanges to block the wallet addresses and transfer the crypto assets to the agency’s wallet. Photo by Naveed Ahmed on UnsplashCrypto assets seizedThe ED, tasked with upholding such financial crimes, spearheaded the operation against E-Nuggets, an online gaming platform masquerading as a legitimate investment opportunity. Taking to the X social media platform on April 30, the Indian law enforcement agency stated: “ED, Kolkata led a successful operation against a major “online gaming app scam” known as “E-Nugget”. The E-Nugget app, masqueraded as a gaming platform, promised users high returns on their investments. Crypto assets which were taken into possession of ED are transferred into Crypto Wallet of ED.” 70 wallets implicatedWith cryptocurrencies valued at $10 million spread across 70 different wallet accounts on three crypto exchanges, the agency swiftly took action. E-Nuggets enticed unsuspecting investors with promises of substantial returns through its purported gaming interface. However, once investments were made, the platform vanished into thin air, leaving users unable to recoup their funds. The ED's investigation revealed a complex web of deceit, with the agency seizing properties totaling over 163 crores ($19.5 million), comprising cash, cryptocurrency holdings, account balances and office spaces. The scam involved the funneling of funds into digital assets through 2,500 dummy bank accounts, resulting in the discovery of 19 crores ($2.2 million) in cash. A first information report (FIR) filed at the Park Street Police Station in Kolkata, became the catalyst that triggered the ED case that was subsequently registered under the provisions of India’s Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Masterminded by Aamir Khan, who was apprehended alongside accomplice Romen Agarwal, the scheme operated under the guise of digital transactions, which, ironically, facilitated its unraveling. Law enforcement agencies adeptly traced, froze and seized the illicit funds as they moved through the digital realm. Public ledger upends scammersCritics often point to the potential for cryptocurrency to facilitate money laundering. However, the inherent transparency of blockchain technology presents significant obstacles to such illicit activities. Notably, in the infamous 2016 Bitfinex hack, where hackers absconded with 119,756 Bitcoin, the culprits were eventually apprehended in 2022 while attempting to launder the stolen funds. The collaborative efforts between Binance, the ED, and local exchanges points to a developing commitment towards combating financial fraud within the cryptocurrency space. This wasn’t the first occasion in which Binance had cooperated with law enforcement on such matters. In October of last year, the company got with the Thai authorities to assist them in crushing a crypto-related scam. By leveraging blockchain's transparency and international cooperation, authorities can effectively dismantle illicit schemes, safeguarding investors and upholding the integrity of the digital asset ecosystem.

South Korean FSC prohibits domestic securities firms from brokering spot bitcoin ETF

The South Korean Financial Services Commission (FSC) made an official announcement on Friday (KST) stating that "domestic securities firms brokering spot bitcoin ETFs that are listed on overseas markets may be considered a violation of the government's stance on virtual assets and the Financial Investment Services and Capital Markets Act." This stance refers to a press release published on Dec. 13, 2017 that outlined the government’s conclusion that virtual assets must be dealt with carefully.Photo by Lauren Seo on UnsplashFuture possibilityHowever, this statement is not to be interpreted as a complete dismissal of the possibility that South Korea could adopt the ETF. The agency added that it would look into the issue thanks to a more stable regulatory landscape sweeping the country following the implementation of regulations on virtual assets like the Virtual Asset User Protection Act. Authorities are also taking into consideration the fact that other countries like the U.S. are adopting a more open stance. Market downturnFollowing the announcement, stocks related to the ETF in the South Korean market – which had surged on the news of a spot bitcoin ETF listing on the U.S. stock market a day ago – saw share prices drop within a day. As of 10:04 a.m. on Friday, Woori Technology Investment was trading at KRW 7,650 ($5.82), down 4.61 percent from the day before, and Hanwha Investment & Securities was down 9.09 percent to KRW 4,000. Both of these firms hold stakes in Dunamu, the operator of South Korea's largest cryptocurrency exchange Upbit.

Korea Investment and Securities Completes the Construction of Security Token Infrastructure

Korea Investment and Securities Completes the Construction of Security Token InfrastructureKorea Investment and Securities (KIS) recently announced that it has become the first securities firm in South Korea to successfully establish an infrastructure for security token offerings.Photo by Joshua Sortino on UnsplashReal-world assetsSecurity tokens are a new class of securities that are based on distributed ledger technology, allowing individuals to invest in real-world assets (RWAs) that can be tokenized. Such assets include real estate, ships, airplanes, and artworks. In March, KIS initiated a security token consortium named “Korea Investment ST Friends,” collaborating with Internet-only banks KakaoBank and Toss Bank, AI company Kakao Enterprise, and blockchain developer Open Asset. Since May, the consortium has been diligently working with the principal objective of constructing an infrastructure leveraging distributed ledgers. Consequently, the group has finalized the development and testing of a system that manages the entire trajectory of security token projects, from issuance to liquidation.Cloud systemSpecifically, KIS has built its infrastructure on a cloud network, bearing in mind that the regulatory framework for security tokens is still in development. This cloud system is capable of adapting to regulatory modifications and implementing improvement updates. Moreover, it utilizes an agile development approach to encourage rapid decision-making and productive collaborations, enhancing time efficiency.Compatibility with the traditional systemThe newly established security token infrastructure is also compatible with the traditional security trading system. Achieving this compatibility posed numerous technical challenges as the new system operates on distributed ledgers, whereas the existing one relies on centralized servers.KIS is preparing to file patents for some of the technologies incorporated into the new system. These technologies encompass the payment of dividends through smart contracts, assurance of immediate settlements using deposits on distributed ledgers, and the management and safeguarding of personal information. By demonstrating the infrastructure’s capability and stability, the securities firm aims to gain a technological edge.Choi Seo-ryong, the head of the platform division at KIS, expects the new infrastructure to mark a significant milestone as distributed ledger technology merges with traditional finance. He further mentioned that the securities company will discover blue-chip assets meeting investor needs while committing to the stable establishment of the regulatory framework and the protection of investors.Moving forward, ST Friends will continue to enhance the stability and functionalities of the infrastructure through a series of field tests related to the entire process of security token products. Aiming to construct a security token ecosystem, the group will also concentrate on developing products by collaborating with various firms, including Korean content investment platform Funderful and real estate trading platform Valuemap.
