OmniBOLT to Support BRC-20 Tokens on Lightning

Web3 & Enterprise·May 10, 2023, 12:32 AM

Singapore’s OmniBOLT, a project that’s developing technological solutions within bitcoin’s layer two network environment, has outlined that it will support BRC-20 tokens on Lightning Network.

Before we consider precisely what OnmiBOLT's decision to support BRC-20 tokens means, let’s cover the backstory.

BRC-20

BRC-20 is an experimental token standard which was created by an anonymous developer with the handle “Domo”, and username ‘@domodata’ on Twitter. A token standard governs how and where a cryptocurrency can be used. The approach has been pioneered by developers on the Ethereum blockchain who created the ERC-20 standard a number of years ago, relative to the Ethereum network.

A bitcoin evolution

In this instance, BRC-20 is a fungible token standard designed for the bitcoin blockchain. Bitcoin development is very slow and conservative, and deliberately so, in an effort to put network security first. However, it has had two major upgrades over the course of the last few years, namely SegWit and Taproot.

Many in crypto have been critical of the bitcoin project on the basis of it being a pet rock that lacked features and the flexibility to use it in other ways aside from as a store of value or means of exchange. However, those protocol upgrades have led to further development that is expanding bitcoin’s use case and versatility.

SegWit and Taproot enabled the development of Bitcoin Ordinals in January 2023. Ordinals provide a means to create Bitcoin non-fungible tokens (NFTs), by attaching data to individual satoshis, the smallest denomination of Bitcoin. NFTs created this way are immutable as they’re not created on side chains but on the bitcoin blockchain itself.

In a fast moving scenario, the development of Ordinals led two months later to the emergence of the BRC-20 standard. BRC-20 tokens can be stored on the bitcoin base-chain, built with the assistance of Ordinals. BRC-20 is an exciting development as it stands to enable smart contract capabilities relative to bitcoin.

Solving the bitcoin fee issue

Many see this development as a solution for the longer term fees issue that the bitcoin blockchain will have to overcome. Bitcoin miners are compensated in mining rewards but the level of rewards is being cut in half every four years. The concern is that in the longer term, there may not be enough revenue for miners to continue to secure the network effectively.

With the development of Bitcoin Ordinals, more fees are generated, and so this is seen as a means through which the network can sustain itself over the longer term.

Mempool backlog

So what’s not to like? The issue that has arisen over the past few days is that bitcoin transaction fees have hit a two year high. Over the past few days, there have been in excess of 400,000 unconfirmed bitcoin network transactions sitting in the mempool. The mempool is a mechanism within the bitcoin protocol that stores the data relative to a queue of transactions that are waiting to be confirmed.

Relieving pressure on bitcoin

That brings us back to the significance of the Singaporean team of developers at OmniBOLT deciding to support BRC-20 tokens on the lightning network. That move can relieve the pressure on the bitcoin mainnet. The project is being backed by Waterdrip Capital, Danhua Capital, Redline DAO and others.

Bitcoin has been a boring protocol and many have celebrated that fact as a feature and benefit for a network that serves a couple of vitally important use cases exceptionally well. However, development never stops and it’s fascinating to see another side to the protocol unfold, and all the while, it’s not entirely clear where it will end.

Japan’s Biggest Bank Explores Global Stablecoin Issuance

Japan’s Biggest Bank Explores Global Stablecoin IssuanceMitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc. (MUFG), the largest bank in Japan, is currently engaged in discussions with companies involved in popular global stablecoins, as well as other firms, to explore the possibility of issuing these tokens using MUFG’s blockchain platform. That’s according to a report published by Bloomberg on Thursday. The stablecoin law in Japan, which recently went into effect on June 1, has established that only licensed banks, registered money transfer agents, and trust companies within the country are authorized to issue stablecoins.Photo by CoinWire Japan on UnsplashProgmat platformMUFG is actively in talks with various parties regarding the utilization of its blockchain platform, Progmat, to mint stablecoins linked to foreign currencies, including the US dollar, with the intention of facilitating their global use.Tatsuya Saito, the Vice President of Product at MUFG, emphasized that the implementation of the legislation provides issuers and users with a sense of security when it comes to engaging with stablecoins. However, he refrained from disclosing the specific stablecoin parties that MUFG is currently in discussions with.Stablecoins play a pivotal role within the cryptocurrency sector, serving as a reliable asset for investors to hold between trades involving more volatile tokens. These tokens are designed to maintain a consistent value, often pegged to $1, and are typically backed by reserves such as cash and bonds. CoinGecko data indicates that approximately $130 billion worth of stablecoins are presently in circulation.Stablecoin stabilityNevertheless, stablecoins have faced challenges in the past when it comes to maintaining their pegs, resulting in disruptions within crypto markets. Notably, TerraUSD, a token reliant on algorithms and trader incentives, experienced a significant crash in May 2022, leading to losses of at least $40 billion. In response to such incidents, regulators have intensified their scrutiny of stablecoins. The stablecoin law in Japan encourages the issuance of stablecoins that are fully backed by fiat cash in a corresponding currency.MUFG envisions leveraging its Progmat blockchain platform to issue security tokens on behalf of third parties, with no immediate plans to develop its own stablecoin, according to Saito. He further revealed that the bank is actively exploring stablecoin projects with entertainment firms, non-financial businesses, and a consortium of Japanese financial institutions. Furthermore, overseas financial groups have shown keen interest, and Saito believes that Japan has the potential to become a global hub for stablecoin issuance.Tether dominanceTether ($USDT) holds the position of the top global stablecoin, accounting for more than 60% of the sector’s market value, while Circle Internet Financial Ltd.’s USD Coin ($USDC) occupies the second spot. Any party intending to produce stablecoins within Japan would need to comply with the country’s legislation.Saito highlighted that the regulation’s provision allowing stablecoins to be denominated in various currencies, including the US dollar, opens up opportunities for the issuance of tokens intended for global use. He expressed his belief that this presents a significant opportunity for Japan.Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s economic agenda, known as “New Capitalism,” includes a focus on supporting the growth of Web3 firms. While Japan has taken steps to relax certain cryptocurrency regulations, such as those pertaining to token listing and taxation, it continues to be perceived as a country with relatively strict regulations.

Superscrypt Backs Airstack’s Web3 Developer Platform

Superscrypt Backs Airstack’s Web3 Developer PlatformSingapore-based Superscrypt, an early stage blockchain investment company founded by state-owned global investment conglomerate Temasek, has led an investment round into Web3 developer platform, Airstack.Photo by Giorgio Trovato on UnsplashIndian influenceAirstack closed out the second tranche of its pre-seed funding round, having raised the largest portion of the $7 million raise via Superscrypt. Although based in Miami Beach, Florida, Airstack has a strong Indian influence. Three of its five founders, Deepesh Kumar, Vysakh Nair and Sarvesh Jain originate from the world’s most populous country. The firm’s main offering is to enable developers to be able to easily query on and off-chain data and integrate that same data into the Web3 apps that they are building. Airstack enables this functionality by featuring GraphQL, a query language for APIs and a runtime for fulfilling those queries with the user’s existing data, as a core component of its platform.Achieving greater functionality still, the start-up enhances that use of GraphQL by incorporating the use of artificial intelligence (AI). The company’s Miami Beach-based CEO and Co-Founder, Jason Goldberg, elaborated on the technology it is using in an interview with CoinDesk: “We did extensive interviews with developers over the past year, gaining insights into their previous tool usage and the challenges they faced. Airstack was built to directly address those pain points.”Recent platform launchThe product offering was launched last month and has already lured in over two hundred developers to use the platform. Those developers are harnessing the functionality of Airstack’s platform to assist them in their efforts to bring a broad range of dApps to market.Developer projects are grounded in areas such as marketing engines, decentralized finance (DeFi) portfolio optimizers, customer resource management tools, advertising platforms, and decentralized social media apps, together with messaging applications. With just a straightforward query and response approach, developers can use Airstack platform functionality to query, combine, and integrate on-chain or off-chain, cross-chain, and cross-application data. The offering applies to queries relative to the Ethereum and Polygon blockchain networks. The project intends to support additional blockchain networks going forward, while also intending to increase the level of query complexity made available to platform users.Joining Superscrypt on the Airstack cap table are Hashed Emergent, NGC, Primal Capital, UOB Ventures, Signum Capital, and others. Goldberg articulated the firm’s strategy going forward: “Our immediate focus is to onboard thousands of developers onto Airstack in the coming months. We aim to identify the areas where we add the most value and where genuine business use cases emerge before finalizing our pricing model.”Social app upgradeAt the same time as this funding announcement, Airstack also revealed a separate development related to its Jam social app. Taking to Twitter on Tuesday, Goldberg provided details on an update to the app which utilizes Airstack functionality in order to create social groups based on NFT ownership and collector status. That functionality can be extended further, so that data can be gathered across projects, creating bespoke user profiles relative to the user’s blockchain activity and presence. At the same time as this funding announcement, Airstack also revealed a separate development related to its Jam social app. Taking to Twitter on Tuesday, Goldberg provided details on an update to the app which utilizes Airstack functionality in order to create social groups based on NFT ownership and collector status.
