BitMEX Chalks Up Two New Perp Contract Listings

Web3 & Enterprise·May 08, 2023, 12:08 AM

Seychelles-based cryptocurrency exchange and derivative trading platform BitMEX announced recently that it has added perpetual contracts relative to two additional digital assets.

A perpetual contract is a crypto futures contract without an expiry date. Just like with a more conventional futures contract, a perpetual contract is a derivative product, deriving its value from the underlying crypto asset.

$SUI token

Taking to Twitter, the company outlined that it has added perpetual contracts for the $SUI token. The contracts will be available in $SUI/USD and SUI/USDT pairings. Leverage relative to the contracts is being made available up to a maximum of 50x.

$SUI is the native token of the Sui blockchain platform. Sui is a layer one blockchain which launched earlier this week. It’s a smart contract platform maintained via a network of permissionless validators. The blockchain network claims to offer a scalable network with ultra low latency. Such low latency can enable diverse use cases such as retail point of sale payment systems and gaming.

The contract allows users to post bitcoin as collateral, earning or losing in bitcoin as the SUI/USD rate changes. Maximum risk limit is set at 50 bitcoin. Meanwhile maker and taker fees have been set for the product at 0.02% and 0.075% respectively. A base initial margin of 2% applies while base maintenance margin of 1% applies.

$PEPE token

On Wednesday, BitMEX also launched perpetual contract products relative to the $PEPE token at 04:00 UTC. There are two listings, PEPE/USD and PEPE/USDT. Pepe coin is a meme token project, inspired by the Pepe the Frog meme. The origins of the cartoon character stem from the Boy’s Club comic in 2005. It later became an internet meme, and later still it was adopted as a meme within the crypto space.

The token itself was launched in April, sky rocketing to a $502 million market capitalization since then, representing a 2,100% rise in the token’s unit price since its launch.

As in the case of the $SUI token, $PEPE is also available to trade on BitMEX with leverage as high as 50x. In an interview with one crypto news publication, a representative of BitMEX commented on the launch as follows:

“PEPE needs a Perp! Perpetual Contracts are the most traded product in crypto and offer all investors taking a long or short position on tokens with better liquidity and fewer network risks. At BitMEX, we offer Tether-margined and Bitcoin-margined perpetual contracts. We are proud to be the inventor of the Perpetual Swap and have long been a leading trading venue for crypto derivatives, offering uncompromised security, a reliable platform, and deep liquidity — as professional traders deserve.”

Many commentators in the crypto space have repeatedly pointed to the high risks involved with leverage. In this instance 50x leverage is incredibly high risk, making the product suitable only for those traders that fully and thoroughly understand the risk that comes with such leveraged trading.

SAI.TECH Consolidates Mining Product Offering

Singapore’s SAI.TECH, a bitcoin miner and mining infrastructure hardware developer, has chosen to consolidate its product offering. The company has simplified its product range by categorizing them as Ultiaas, Boltbit, and Heatnuc. Virtual annual conferenceThe company took the opportunity to host SAITIME 2023, a virtual corporate annual conference, using the event as a platform to announce its SAIHUB product consolidation.Ultiaas will focus on the development of hardware and software products alongside integrated solutions, in order to enable liquid cooling and heat reuse capabilities while attempting to achieve optimized energy efficiency. In practical terms, these products convert mining chip heat into reusable energy. The team behind the Ultiaas product line believes that the technology can have a significant positive effect on data centers through the harnessing of chip heat in commercial, residential, industrial and agricultural locations. The firm has thoroughly tested the product, with its first successful operation at its testing and distribution facility in Ohio in the United States. According to a press release, the company says that “we look to tap into the state’s vast reservoir of clean energy.” With that, it is already working on the construction of a second site. The green bitcoin mining specialist recycles 90% of the waste heat produced in the mining process, thanks to the technology that it has developed.Boltbit concerns itself with the provision of decentralized transaction system services and technical support. It focuses on blockchain and lightning network technology. Lastly, Heatnuc will focus on the research and promotion of small modular reactors. Unusual price actionThe company, which listed on the Nasdaq last year following a special purpose acquisition companies (SPAC) merger in 2021, was the center of some speculative interest last week. The firm’s shares surged by over 360% to a high of $7.42 in one day’s trading. A week on, the share price has calmed down, trading at $3.68 on Friday. The rationale behind the short-lived share price surge remains a mystery. Kazakhstan scale-backIn August of last year, SAI.TECH decided to scale back an active bitcoin mining site that it is involved in in Kazakhstan. A second phase of the project would have brought 90 MW online. It is still working on phase 1 which will bring 15 MW online.Kazakhstan had seen an influx of bitcoin miners in the wake of a China mining ban a few years ago. The sudden surge in energy consumption on the Kazakh energy grid upset the national power supply, resulting in protests and riots. The country then pushed back against the miners, disconnecting many projects from the grid. It was against this background that it’s understood SAI.TECH decided to scale back its plans in the landlocked Eurasian country.

Bitzlato temporarily suspends withdrawal amid ongoing legal battle

In a recent announcement, Russia-linked cryptocurrency exchange Bitzlato revealed a temporary suspension of certain withdrawal requests, with the suspension taking effect as of Dec. 27. Asset seizureThe decision comes in the wake of French authorities seizing Bitzlato's assets in January last year, a move that also involved international law enforcement, including U.S. authorities. In a message shared on Telegram, Bitzlato explained the suspension: "… We are faced with the need to suspend special balance withdrawals and technical support. This is a temporary measure to prepare for and go through the upcoming court hearings regarding the seizure of user assets in France."Photo by Chris Karidis on UnsplashSpecial balance withdrawalsThe specifics of transactions categorized as "special balance withdrawals" were not disclosed by Bitzlato, and it remains unclear whether the withdrawal freeze is applicable exclusively to users in France. Despite the asset seizure and subsequent closure of Bitzlato's website, the company asserted in its latest statement that it managed to "close 70% of the balance" held at the time of the service shutdown. However, no details were provided on how the company intends to fulfill its obligations with its assets frozen. Bitzlato has been under scrutiny from the U.S. Treasury, which identified the exchange as a money laundering concern linked to illicit Russian financing. Transactions with Bitzlato have been prohibited by the U.S. government. Hydra Market counterpartyThe Department of Justice (DOJ) separately accused Bitzlato of facilitating money laundering and other crimes, alleging involvement in laundering $700 million connected to the now-defunct Russian darknet market, Hydra Market. The DOJ's United States Attorney Breon Peace characterized Bitzlato as an "open turnstile by criminals," while the exchange was deemed a "crucial financial resource" for Hydra Market, enabling the laundering of funds, including those from ransomware attacks. Registered in Hong Kong, Bitzlato served as the largest counterparty in cryptocurrency transactions for Hydra Market, a darknet marketplace for narcotics and illicit drugs. In April 2022, U.S. and German authorities jointly shut down the illicit marketplace. The legal troubles extend to company executives, with Bitzlato founder Anatoly Legkodymov pleading guilty to charges related to the illicit transfer of funds in the U.S. on Dec. 6. Legkodymov agreed to forfeit $23 million to prosecutors and faces a potential prison sentence of up to five years. He is currently imprisoned at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, New York. European authorities also arrested senior management linked to Bitzlato in January 2023. The exchange's precarious situation highlights the challenges faced by cryptocurrency platforms amidst regulatory scrutiny and legal actions. The MDC facility also currently holds John Karony, the CEO of crypto company Safemoon and convicted fraudster and former FTX founder, Sam Bankman-Fried. The Department of Justice found itself the subject of major criticism on Friday, when it emerged that it had informed the court that it would not be pursuing a second trial against Bankman-Fried. A second trial would have centered upon campaign financing offenses. It would have likely implicated Bankman-Fried’s parents. According to federal prosecutors, the disgraced FTX CEO donated customer funds to the tune of $100 million to U.S. politicians. It’s unclear which of these politicians, if any, has returned the money, with critics alleging corruption.
