BitMEX Chalks Up Two New Perp Contract Listings

Web3 & Enterprise·May 08, 2023, 12:08 AM

Seychelles-based cryptocurrency exchange and derivative trading platform BitMEX announced recently that it has added perpetual contracts relative to two additional digital assets.

A perpetual contract is a crypto futures contract without an expiry date. Just like with a more conventional futures contract, a perpetual contract is a derivative product, deriving its value from the underlying crypto asset.

$SUI token

Taking to Twitter, the company outlined that it has added perpetual contracts for the $SUI token. The contracts will be available in $SUI/USD and SUI/USDT pairings. Leverage relative to the contracts is being made available up to a maximum of 50x.

$SUI is the native token of the Sui blockchain platform. Sui is a layer one blockchain which launched earlier this week. It’s a smart contract platform maintained via a network of permissionless validators. The blockchain network claims to offer a scalable network with ultra low latency. Such low latency can enable diverse use cases such as retail point of sale payment systems and gaming.

The contract allows users to post bitcoin as collateral, earning or losing in bitcoin as the SUI/USD rate changes. Maximum risk limit is set at 50 bitcoin. Meanwhile maker and taker fees have been set for the product at 0.02% and 0.075% respectively. A base initial margin of 2% applies while base maintenance margin of 1% applies.

$PEPE token

On Wednesday, BitMEX also launched perpetual contract products relative to the $PEPE token at 04:00 UTC. There are two listings, PEPE/USD and PEPE/USDT. Pepe coin is a meme token project, inspired by the Pepe the Frog meme. The origins of the cartoon character stem from the Boy’s Club comic in 2005. It later became an internet meme, and later still it was adopted as a meme within the crypto space.

The token itself was launched in April, sky rocketing to a $502 million market capitalization since then, representing a 2,100% rise in the token’s unit price since its launch.

As in the case of the $SUI token, $PEPE is also available to trade on BitMEX with leverage as high as 50x. In an interview with one crypto news publication, a representative of BitMEX commented on the launch as follows:

“PEPE needs a Perp! Perpetual Contracts are the most traded product in crypto and offer all investors taking a long or short position on tokens with better liquidity and fewer network risks. At BitMEX, we offer Tether-margined and Bitcoin-margined perpetual contracts. We are proud to be the inventor of the Perpetual Swap and have long been a leading trading venue for crypto derivatives, offering uncompromised security, a reliable platform, and deep liquidity — as professional traders deserve.”

Many commentators in the crypto space have repeatedly pointed to the high risks involved with leverage. In this instance 50x leverage is incredibly high risk, making the product suitable only for those traders that fully and thoroughly understand the risk that comes with such leveraged trading.

Bitdeer Records Revenue Growth Amid Q2 Losses

Bitdeer Records Revenue Growth Amid Q2 LossesSingapore-based crypto mining company, Bitdeer, experienced a notable boost in cash flow during Q2 2023. However, this upswing was counterbalanced by substantial acquisition costs and share-based compensation expenses. It’s been a mixed couple of days for Bitdeer. On Thursday it emerged that the company had struck a deal with B.Riley Financial that has seen the financial services firm sign a $150 million share purchase options agreement with Bitdeer. Twenty-four hours later, there’s further good news in that the firm has increased its mining hash rate. However, it has also recorded a significant loss for Q2, 2023.Photo by David Clarke on UnsplashHash rate increaseIn its recent earnings report released on Friday, Bitdeer revealed a remarkable increase in its mining hash rate. The figures surged from 2.1 exahashes per second to an impressive 3.8 exahashes per second throughout the second quarter of 2023 by comparison with the same period in 2022. Furthermore, Bitdeer’s self-mining operations yielded 758 bitcoins in contrast to 521 bitcoins mined during the same period in the preceding year. This surge in hashing power contributed to a Q2 revenue of $93.8 million, marking a 5% year-over-year increase. Bitdeer attributed this revenue growth to its bolstered hashing power, setting a solid foundation for its financial performance.Linghui Kong, CEO of Bitdeer, shed light on pivotal developments driving the company’s growth trajectory. Kong highlighted the successful completion of the mining site in Bhutan and the establishment of a cutting-edge immersion cooling data center.Operational expansionKong emphasized: “Our 100MW mining datacenter in Bhutan is in the process of power-on testing, and the mining machines are beginning stable operation.” Additionally, he mentioned that a 175MW immersion cooling data center is currently under construction at the Tydal mining facility in Norway, with an expected completion date of 2025.Bitdeer’s expansion endeavors have led to a significant increase in its mining operations. The company now manages 199,000 mining machines, a considerable rise from the previous year’s count of 119,000. Over the past year, Bitdeer’s business model has evolved, with a majority of machines being hosted rather than self-owned.Despite the growth in operations, Bitdeer reported a net loss of $40.4 million in Q2, marking a substantial increase from the previous year’s quarterly loss of $15.6 million.Merger overheadThe Q2 losses were largely attributed to Bitdeer’s merger with the special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), Blue Safari Group Acquisition Corp. Notably, the listing fee alone for this merger amounted to $33.2 million, and share-based payment expenses added up to $9.6 million during the quarter.Bitdeer’s stock had experienced a 26% decline in the 30 days leading up to the report. However, the losses were quickly recouped, with the stock rallying by over 27% on the day of the report’s publication. This market response underscores the dynamic nature of the cryptocurrency sector and the investor sentiment surrounding it.Bitdeer’s Q2 performance showcases the company’s revenue growth propelled by enhanced hashing power. The expansion of its mining operations, coupled with strategic developments like the Bhutan mining site and immersion cooling data center, position Bitdeer for further growth.

Dramatic crypto tax take decline recorded in Indonesia

Indonesia witnessed a striking decline in cryptocurrency tax revenue for the year 2023, according to local media. 63% decreaseA report by Indonesian business and financial publication Kontan detailed a tax take drop to $31.7 million (Indonesian rupiah 467.27 billion). That tax collection is in sharp contrast to the partial collection period in 2022 when the crypto tax regime was initially introduced. It represents a drop of around 63%. The decline is part of a broader tax reform targeting the "digital economy" implemented in 2022, with the Indonesian government expressing the expectation that the reform would enhance tax collection, fostering a "healthy and fair taxation system."Photo by Nick Agus Arya on UnsplashDeclining transaction volumesDespite bitcoin's impressive surge of approximately 160% throughout 2023, the dip in crypto tax revenue was notable. The decrease is closely tied to a drop in transaction volumes over the same period compared to 2022. A report by CoinDesk Indonesia last week put that trading volume decrease at around 60%. Crypto transactions in Indonesia face dual taxation – a 0.1% income tax and a 0.11% value-added tax (VAT). Additionally, local crypto exchanges are subject to a special tax of approximately 0.04%, contributing to the national digital asset bourse. Disadvantaging local exchangesLocal exchanges in Indonesia, including prominent ones like Indodax, have voiced discontent with the high tax rates, contending that these levies are driving users towards unregulated offshore exchanges. Earlier this month Indodax CEO Oscar Darmawan called on the Indonesian government to review crypto tax rates. Darmawan highlighted that the cumulative taxes on crypto transactions often surpass the trading fees paid by users, posing a risk of users seeking more cost-effective alternatives. Local exchanges suggest that crypto transactions should only be subject to income tax, eliminating the VAT component. This proposal comes as Indonesia's Financial Services Authority (OJK) prepares to implement cryptocurrency regulations in early 2025. The aim is to align the taxation of cryptocurrencies with their market nature, possibly redefining them more as securities than commodities. Inadequate tax regulation can lead to a decline in local market activities, potentially resulting in capital flight to more favorable jurisdictions. Indonesia's situation serves as a reminder of the crucial need for policies that understand and adapt to the dynamic nature of the cryptocurrency sector. India is being similarly challenged. Local exchanges there have also complained of punitive taxation, which resulted in Indian users migrating to offshore exchanges. That scenario led indigenous exchanges to lobby the government to take action. The authorities have duly acted, flagging a number of global exchanges for operating illegally within India. It’s not all bad news for the development of digital assets within Indonesia. The country still ranks highly in terms of crypto adoption within the Asian region. Crypto was also floated as an election issue recently by Gibran Rakabuming Raka, a vice-presidential candidate in the upcoming election. The politician expressed his commitment to accelerating the country's position as a leader in the digital revolution.

Bitdeer Poised to Go Public Despite Delays

Bitcoin mining company Bitdeer Technologies Group is finally set to go public on the Nasdaq this Friday after a series of delays. The Singapore-based firm, which offers cloud mining services, has been in a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) merger process with Blue Safari Group. Drawn-out merger processBlue Safari Group filed for three extensions within six months last year, the last extension being a year long. The deal was originally expected to close in November 2021. The stopping block for the latest extension was insufficient time to get shareholder approval. However, Bitdeer Technologies Group revealed in a statement that shareholder approval has now been filed with the SEC.The merger was finally approved at an extraordinary general meeting of Blue Safari’s shareholders on April 11. The results of the vote will be included in a current report on Form 8-K to be filed by Blue Safari with the SEC. The deal is expected to close on April 13, 2023. Upon closing, Bitdeer Technologies Group will remain as the combined company, and its shares will begin trading on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol “BTDR” on April 14.Bitdeer CEO Linghui Kong said, “Today marks a significant milestone for Bitdeer, leaving us poised to list on the Nasdaq and equipped to seize the growth opportunities ahead of us. I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved so far and look forward to embarking on the next chapter of our journey.” The firm operates six mining data centers globally, with an aggregate electricity capacity of 775MW at the end of 2022. Surviving crypto winterBitdeer Technologies Group, backed by Bitmain founder Jihan Wu, offers cloud mining services, and is participating in a market that has been impacted by market volatility. However, miners that have survived are doubling down on expansion efforts. Yesterday, for example, the U.S. mining firm CleanSpark announced the purchase of 45,000 new mining machines for $144.9 million.Bitdeer will be part of a growing list of Bitcoin mining firms listed on Nasdaq, joining the likes of Riot Blockchain, Marathon Digital, and Canaan. Green miningRecently, the cryptocurrency mining industry has witnessed significant growth in green mining efforts. Terawulf, a US-based company, recently announced that its nuclear-powered mining facility, Nautilus, will come online soon. When fully operational, Nautilus is expected to have a hash rate of 1.6 exahashes per second (EH/s). The facility will run on nuclear power, which will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the mining operations. The energy-use of crypto mining has been coming under scrutiny relative to its carbon footprint and the demands it places on the power grid. In what many in the crypto space have called a “hit piece” targeting mining, the New York Times took aim at the industry on Monday. Bitdeer took to Twitter to call out false claims made by the publication relative to its use of energy during a 2021 winter storm.Bitdeer’s journey to becoming a publicly-traded company has been fraught with delays, but with shareholder approval in place, the company is ready to enter the public markets.
