Korean Crypto Firms Organize Consortium for Real-World Asset Tokens

Web3 & Enterprise·May 04, 2023, 4:14 AM

Elysia, a Korean decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) project, announced today that it organized a consortium to promote an ecosystem for real-world asset (RWA) tokens.

Tangible assets

RWA tokens are virtual assets underpinned by tangible assets such as real estate properties and cars.

The consortium comprises Neopin, a blockchain platform of Korean online game publisher Neowiz; Galaxia Metaverse, a blockchain subsidiary of Korean industrial conglomerate Hyosung Group; and BKEX Labs, a British Virgin Islands-based crypto investment firm. The companies will collaboratively research and develop a decentralized finance (DeFi) lending protocol supported by RWA tokens.

Lending protocols

Lending protocols based on physical assets offer better security and higher profitability compared to those based on unbacked virtual assets, which often experience high price volatility. As a DAO LLC approved by the state of Wyoming in the US, Elysia will leverage its RWA tokenization system to bolster security within the protocol and provide legal safeguards to investors.

In addition, tokenized tangible assets are expected to offer small investors a chance to invest in markets that were previously out of reach due to the requirement of a significant amount of capital.

According to Aju Business Daily, an Elysia official said that an RWA-based lending protocol would not only appeal to retail investors but also to institutions and projects. These entities are expected to park their excess funds and introduce RWA liquidity pools into their DeFi, the official added.

Better liquidity of physical assets

Elysia’s RWA tokens can be liquidated on its DeFi platform Elyfi. Users can create RWA tokens based on their tangible assets and visit Elyfi to sell those tokens or borrow virtual assets against them. Elysia aims to facilitate the liquidity of physical assets and offer a diverse range of financial services based on this model.

MANTRA snags VASP license in Dubai

MANTRA, a real-world asset (RWA) tokenization blockchain project headquartered in Hong Kong, has announced that it has been awarded a Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) license in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). In a community update published on its website, MANTRA co-founder and CEO John Patrick Mullin outlined that Dubai regulator, the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA), had awarded the company the VASP license, meaning that the project is now entitled to act as a virtual asset exchange. Additionally, it is authorized to offer broker-dealer and investment management services. Photo by Aleksandar Pasaric on PexelsMullin claimed that the milestone is huge for both the company and the broader industry. He stated:”It’s a major step in our objective to bring the world’s financial ecosystem onchain by being the preferred ledger of record for real world assets. It’s a validation of our purpose, which is to provide developers and institutions with a purpose-built RWA Layer 1 Blockchain, that’s capable of adhering to real world regulatory requirements.” Scaling operations in the Middle EastThe project sees the license as a key step in broadening MANTRA’s global footprint and scaling its operations within the Middle East. Mullin outlined that both the UAE and broader Middle East & North Africa (MENA) have become “a progressive global hub and thriving ecosystem for Web3 and virtual assets owing to their regulatory initiatives and frameworks.” Mullin added that the license not only strengthens the project’s presence regionally, but it also “positions us internationally to deliver unique DeFi products that bridge the gap between decentralized finance and traditional finance.”  Shorooq Partners, a Dubai-based venture capital firm and investor in the project, commented on the announcement on X. It said that the license would mean that MANTRA would set a new standard for compliant and secure DeFi solutions. It emphasized the importance of regulatory compliance in enabling institutional DeFi adoption on a global scale. The venture capital firm was the lead investor in an $11 million funding round completed by MANTRA in March 2024. At the time, Shane Shin, founding partner at Shorooq, said that he liked MANTRA’s strategic focus on key markets like Hong Kong and Dubai, adding that the investment implicated a future where digital and traditional assets converge seamlessly. The project intends to launch DeFi-based products that have been formulated to meet investors' needs by combining the benefits of DeFi with the structure and security provided by conventional finance. Token's price performanceThe OM token is a utility and governance token within the MANTRA decentralized autonomous organization (DAO). It was the best-performing layer-1 token as of Feb. 17. At the time of writing, it’s trading at $7.59, according to CoinMarketCap data. The project also announced a $1 billion deal with UAE-based DAMAC Group, a property development company, last month.

FTX Japan Moves Towards FTX 2.0 via Hiring Drive

FTX Japan Moves Towards FTX 2.0 via Hiring DriveFTX Japan, a subsidiary company of the collapsed FTX crypto exchange business, is embarking on a hiring spree to bolster its team and drive the FTX 2.0 initiative forward.News of the new recruitment initiative broke via a tweet from Seth Melamed, FTX Japan’s Chief Operations Officer. Melamed wrote: “FTX Japan is hiring! Our team is exploring the leading edge of technology including AI to develop new crypto tools, non-custodial CEX trading, Proof of Solvency, and leading crypto derivatives products.”On the firm’s careers page on its website, FTX Japan details that it is looking to hire a Flutter Engineer to work on mobile applications, customer service staff and a marketer. Additionally, the company is looking to offer an internship.Photo by Tianshu Liu on UnsplashAdvancing FTX 2.0This latest recruitment initiative comes on the back of news that broke last week that the FTX Debtor led by bankruptcy specialist John J. Ray III, had decided not to follow through with the sale of FTX Japan. Most FTX creditors have been calling for the relaunch of the exchange business, dubbed FTX 2.0. Monthly expense filings have shown that various advisors to the Unsecured Creditors Committee (UCC) and professionals working for FTX itself have been spending quite a lot of time working on that possibility.Such a relaunch has as yet not been officially confirmed. However, it is looking increasingly likely that there’s a strong commitment to advancing the FTX 2.0 initiative, and with that, FTX Japan is actively seeking new talent.A restructuring plan is expected to be filed before the end of the month. This will likely move the notion of FTX 2.0 from a matter of speculation to something more tangible. That said, even if it forms part of that plan filing, due to the cumbersome workings of the US bankruptcy process, it’s unlikely that the overall international business will be relaunched until 2024. FTX Japan is solvent and so, it could be back in operation well before then.FTT token speculationEarlier this week, a beta version of a claims filing system was put online, although not officially launched. News of this development led to speculative interest in FTX’s exchange token, FTT.On Tuesday, the token increased in value by 26% within a matter of hours. Pricing has since cooled, and at the time of publication, the token had a unit price of $1.52. Crypto certainly garners speculative interest as this price action demonstrates. It remains to be seen until further clarification is provided by the FTX Debtor and the bankruptcy court in Delaware in the United States as to whether FTT will even feature in the future plans of a restructured business.FTX was very much the standout black swan event within crypto in 2022. However, it’s clear that its story remains unfinished. In the months ahead, we’re likely to hear more about the future plans for the business, in what could become quite the redemption story.
