Advanced privacy measures

The two firms will work together to develop various blockchain-based service platforms, such as a token securities offering (STO) platform, that will be equipped with strengthened privacy protection technology for data stored on blockchains.

Innovation unleashed

Lambda256 has been leveraging its Web3 developer platform Luniverse to work with a plethora of businesses, including those in the security token industry, to help them build, deploy and manage blockchain networks. Some of its solutions include DID, a blockchain-based identity management system; Trace, a blockchain verification and tracking system; and Point, a blockchain-based loyalty rewards solution.

CryptoLab, on the other hand, has developed in-house homomorphic encryption technology that can encrypt data while allowing that data to still be operated on. The firm’s CEO, Chun Jeong-hee, who is also a professor at Seoul National University’s Department of Mathematical Science, was selected as a Fellow of the International Academy of Cryptography (IACR) this year in recognition of his contributions to the development of the field of cryptography.

“By combining Lambda256’s blockchain platform with our homomorphic encryption technology, we look forward to exchanging our technology and capabilities,” said Shin Jun-bum, CTO of Cryptolab. Jason Lee, CISO of Lambda256, also reaffirmed the companies’ joint goal of solving data privacy issues that occur in the blockchain space. He added that they would take this opportunity to bring blockchain to fields like finance and healthcare that are sensitive to data privacy.

Kiln raises $17M to fund APAC growth

Kiln, the Paris-based Ethereum staking platform, has successfully secured $17 million in a recent funding round, as revealed in a press release on Thursday. Round led by 1kxThe financing round was spearheaded by 1kx, with participation from Crypto.com, Wintermute Ventures, Thailand’s KXVC and Hong Kong’s LBank and IOSG. This infusion of capital brings Kiln's total funding to $35 million, marking a milestone in the company's growth trajectory. The latest funding follows a previous investment of $17.6 million in 2022 from Illuminate Financial, LeadBlock Partners, Sparkle Ventures, Alven and Blue Yard Capital, among others. Kiln opted not to disclose the valuation associated with the recent funding round. In 2021, Canadian blockchain infrastructure and staking firm Figment reached unicorn status with a $1.4 billion valuation. The Kiln platform has witnessed significant growth, increasing its staked assets under management to $4.2 billion in 2023. Acknowledging that growth on Jan. 4, Fred Lardieg, partner at Abu Dhabi sovereign fund Mubadala wrote:”This little-known French startup called @Kiln_finance has been killing it in the #Ethereum #Staking space, by relentlessly releasing new features throughout 2023. They're now the #1 operator of Ethereum validator nodes according to @ratedw3b.” The firm’s expansion is attributed to strategic integrations with various custody solutions, wallets and exchanges over the past year.Photo by DrawKit Illustrations on UnsplashRegional headquarters in SingaporeThe funds raised will be instrumental in facilitating Kiln's global expansion initiatives, including the establishment of its Asia-Pacific (APAC) headquarters in Singapore during the first quarter of the year. Additionally, the company aims to allocate resources for further product development to enhance its offerings in the decentralized finance (DeFi) space. Laszlo Szabo, CEO and co-founder of Kiln, articulated the company's mission, stating: "Our mission is to democratize value creation in the digital assets ecosystem, providing millions of users with easy access to rewards through our platform." The funds will support Kiln's commitment to making value creation in the digital assets space more accessible globally. The company plans to use the funding not only for expansion but also to introduce additional reward mechanisms in the rapidly evolving DeFi landscape. Regulatory uncertaintyWhile Ethereum staking offers users the opportunity to earn yields by validating transactions on the blockchain, the regulatory landscape remains uncertain. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has taken legal action against several exchanges involved in crypto staking, with SEC Chairman Gary Gensler expressing views on Ethereum-like tokens as potential securities. Despite regulatory challenges, Kiln's staking platform caters to institutional clients, allowing them to stake assets and offer white-label solutions to their customers. With a focus on proof-of-stake blockchains, Kiln holds a significant portion of staked assets on Ethereum, exceeding $3.1 billion, according to its Dune Analytics dashboard. 1kx Founding Partner Christopher Heymann emphasized the increasing role of financial institutions in the crypto space, stating:  "Financial institutions will become a dominant force in crypto, leveraging the immense market opportunity as they stake on behalf of their customers." By utilizing smart contracts, Kiln allows users to stake smaller amounts, overcoming the traditional barrier of a 32 ETH minimum requirement for native ether staking. This approach aligns with Kiln's goal of fostering inclusivity in the rapidly expanding world of decentralized finance.

Matrixport forecasts SEC bitcoin ETF rejection

In a recent report, Singaporean digital asset financial services firm Matrixport has made a bold forecast regarding the future of bitcoin prices and the potential rejection of spot bitcoin ETFs by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the United States.Photo by André François McKenzie on UnsplashMinority viewWhile most ETF and crypto industry analysts in recent weeks have been suggesting a greater than 90% chance of the imminent approval of a spot bitcoin ETF coming from the SEC, Matrixport has had its say, speculating that the regulator will once again reject all such applications. In a note published to its website on Wednesday, the firm stated:”The current five-person voting Commissioners leadership critical for the ETF approval of the SEC is dominated by Democrats. SEC Chair Gensler is not embracing crypto in the U.S., and it might even be a very long shot to expect that he would vote to approve bitcoin spot ETFs.” The report emphasizes the dominant influence of Democratic leadership within the SEC, particularly Chairman Gary Gensler's cautious approach to crypto regulation. The Democrat-led administration in the United States has been decidedly anti-crypto in its policies throughout the ongoing term of U.S. President Joe Biden. Matrixport also suggests a potential delay in ETF approvals until Q2 2024, dampening hopes of an imminent market boost. Potential bitcoin price slumpShould the company be right in that speculation, it extrapolates that this turn of events will potentially lead to a substantial decline in bitcoin's value, with the bitcoin unit price possibly dropping to as low as $36,000. This revelation has sent shock waves through the market, prompting Matrixport to advise investors to take protective measures. The recommended strategies include purchasing put options or engaging in direct shorting of bitcoin to mitigate potential losses. With an ominous Jan. 5, 2024 deadline looming, traders could decide to hedge their long exposure by purchasing $40,000 strike put options expiring at the end of January or opting for outright short positions through options. Matrixport's report challenges the previously optimistic expectations surrounding bitcoin's future, highlighting the SEC's likely rejection of spot ETFs as a significant factor. Despite the platform's earlier bullish stance, it now expresses skepticism about the SEC's willingness to embrace cryptocurrencies. The firm contends that the current influx of funds into crypto, driven by expectations of ETF approval, could result in significant liquidations if the SEC denies the proposals. The report estimates that about $10 billion of the $14 billion additional investments might be linked to optimistic ETF prospects. Notably, Matrixport foresees a rapid 20% decline in bitcoin's price, reverting to a range of around $36,000 to $38,000 should the SEC reject the ETFs. Positive long-term outlookDespite the potential setback with the SEC, Matrixport maintains a positive long-term outlook for bitcoin, expecting the BTC price to end 2024 above the $42,000 mark, where it started the year. The analysis also considers historical trends in U.S. election years and bitcoin mining cycles for the potential rally. At the time of writing, the bitcoin unit price is down 4.75% over the course of the past 24 hours, now standing at $42,838. Investors are closely monitoring the upcoming SEC decision and may well be heeding Matrixport's advice to navigate potential market volatility.

South Korea investigates Worldcoin for its personal data collection

On Thursday, South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Committee (PIPC) launched an investigation into Worldcoin’s personal data collection, processing and potential overseas transfer of sensitive personal data, the PIPC announced today via its official website. This comes after a number of complaints were filed against Worldcoin for its data collection practices.  Sam Altman’s crypto project Worldcoin gathers people’s personal data who signed up to have their irises scanned by “orbs” devices, which are currently installed in about 10 locations in Korea, including Yeouido, Pangyo and Apgujeong. The project started with the aim of distributing universal basic income to people whose jobs will be potentially replaced by artificial general intelligence (AGI) in the future. Photo by Colin Lloyd on UnsplashThe PIPC said the regulators will examine if any local privacy law has been violated by Worldcoin, and take further action in line with the Personal Information Protection Act. Following the launch of the investigation on Feb. 29, Worldcoin has withdrawn six orbs devices in Korea and stopped accepting new members. It has also suspended the distribution of the Worldcoin token (WLD) to members who have already signed up, media outlet Chosun Biz reported.  Free crypto tokens in exchange for personal data For individuals who have their irises scanned, Worldcoin rewards three WLD tokens every two weeks, which are worth approximately $22.5 (KRW 30,000) at the time of writing. The price of WLD has soared by nearly ten-fold from about KRW 1,300 last year to over KRW 13,000 today, according to the data from the local crypto exchange Bithumb. This price surge followed OpenAI’s launch of a text-to-video AI tool, Sora. The current circulating supply of WLD stands at around 100 million tokens. According to Worldcoin’s white paper, the WLD’s total supply cap will remain fixed at 10 billion tokens during the first 15 years following its launch.  The data collected from the eyeball scanning is shared on the Worldcoin blockchain, which is protected by the zero-knowledge proof technology that prevents the data from being tracked or shared with other applications. The personal data remaining in the orbs devices is deleted.  Ongoing overseas investigation on Worldcoin South Korea is not the only country that is examining Worldcoin’s personal data collection practices. The project’s processing of information has raised concerns in other jurisdictions as well, including the U.K., France, Argentina and Kenya. In the U.S., the issuance of WLD tokens has been banned by the country’s authority.
