Bitcoin’s resilience

Speaking at a special seminar on virtual assets co-hosted by CrossAngle and accounting firm Samjong KPMG in Seoul last Friday, Kim Jun-woo, Co-Founder and CEO of Xangle, cited Bitcoin’s positive reputation as one of the reasons for the optimism. "There are reports that Bitcoin has a low correlation with risky virtual assets," he said.

Public sentiment toward Bitcoin is also expected to improve this year as the global economy is expected to emerge from recession and manage a soft landing. Another major item on the agenda is a possible approval by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of a spot Bitcoin ETF this quarter.

Web3 revolution

In terms of innovative services, Kim stated that Web3 is expected to be actively implemented in local corporations after going through conceptual and technical testing stages.

"In South Korea’s crypto market, (resources like) app stores and mobile phones exist, but there are no actual apps," Kim said. "I expect that figures from traditional finance and existing Web2 companies will enter the Web3 industry this year."

"Web2 companies will discover new business opportunities in Web3 and play a role in bringing existing content and users to Web3," said Lee Hyun-woo, Co-CEO of Xangle, in his presentation on the importance of Web3 system integration and virtual asset disclosure. "Their participation is important for the stable maturation of the Web3 ecosystem," he added.

Regulation and governance

In regards to policies and regulations, expectations point to a resolution of various uncertainties as cryptocurrencies are slowly becoming more integrated into the sphere of traditional finance. In South Korea, the imposition of basic legal regulations on virtual assets is accelerating, such as the Virtual Asset User Protection Act. The Financial Services Commission (FSC) also released guidelines for accounting and disclosure of virtual assets last month, which was examined in detail at the seminar.

"The financial authorities' guidelines are more detailed than before. We expect additional guidelines from them in the future to further resolve shortcomings," Choi Yeon-taek, Managing Director of Samjong KPMG, commented.

Civic Group Files Embezzlement Complaint Against Former Kakao Chairman Over KLAY Tokens

Civic Group Files Embezzlement Complaint Against Former Kakao Chairman Over KLAY TokensA South Korean civic group, known as Economic Democracy 21, filed on Wednesday a prosecution complaint against Kim Beom-soo, the former chairman of the internet giant Kakao, and several executives from Kakao’s affiliated companies. The allegations at hand pertain to embezzlement, specifically revolving around the virtual asset known as KLAY.Photo by Tingey Injury Law Firm on UnsplashKlaytn’s native tokenKLAY represents the native token of the Klaytn blockchain, which was developed by GroundX, a blockchain subsidiary of Kakao.Legal breach claimsThe complaint, formally submitted to the joint crypto-crime investigation division of the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors’ Office, asserts that Kakao executives have breached the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes and the Capital Markets Act.Clandestine pre-salesWithin the detailed complaint, Economic Democracy 21 alleges that following the issuance of KLAY, Kakao’s executives conducted private pre-sales of KLAY tokens before their official listing. These pre-sales activities reportedly raised between KRW 150 billion and 300 billion ($113 million and $226 million). The accusation is that these funds were not channeled into business endeavors, but rather diverted for personal use.The complaint also contends that Kim and other executives withdrew KLAY tokens from the company under the guise of investments, compensation, and service fees related to “overseas investment business” since 2022. The civic group further asserted that these corporate leaders employed a program to manipulate transaction records, presumably with the intent of preventing third parties from discovering the nature of these transactions.

Korean Telecommunications Firms Ramp Up ESG Efforts with NFTs

Korean Telecommunications Firms Ramp Up ESG Efforts with NFTsSouth Korea’s top three leading telecommunications companies — SK Telecom (SKT), KT, and LG Uplus — are using non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to boost their corporate environmental, social and governance (ESG) efforts and engage younger audiences in their initiatives.Photo by Noah Buscher on UnsplashKT’s Raon NFT projectEarlier this year, KT launched an internal collaborative project between its device division and its blockchain division, KT MINCL, to issue profile picture (PFP) NFTs of its intellectual property — the feline character Raon. The project consists of four editions of NFT mintings, each with a different concept promoting mindful consumerism. 3,000 NFTs each were minted for the first two editions back in December and June, and KT is gearing up to release the third edition soon, according to industry reports on Sunday (local time). A portion of the proceeds from the upcoming third edition sale will also be donated under the project’s name. Notably, all 3,000 NFTs from the first edition were sold out in just a minute.KT has designed the NFT purchase system to encourage ESG-related activities. Buyers can receive items that reflect ESG values, such as bags from The Fair Story, a company that promotes fair trade products made by brands from developing countries. “We will continue to work with companies related to our ESG values to develop household products, miscellaneous goods, and more that are linked to NFTs,” KT said.LG Uplus and SKT’s ESG-led collaborationsLG Uplus and SKT have followed suit by incorporating eco-friendly themes into their own blockchain technologies. In particular, SKT recently signed a business agreement with WinCL, a carbon credit marketplace encouraging carbon offset efforts. The deal aims to combine SKT’s NFT marketplace, TopPort, and WinCL’s carbon credit system to issue NFTs for companies that need help managing their ESG performance indicators. On October 18, LG Uplus announced that a select number of holders of its Moono Crew NFT will be the first to purchase NFTs from the Incheon Heroes NFT collection — a collection launched on the Klaytn Mainnet as part of Incheon City’s Incheon Universe Project, aimed at introducing Incheon’s natural, cultural, historical, and technological heritage, and motivating participation in eco-friendly activities from younger generations. The company had collaborated with Incheon and Lotte Home Shopping to promote and expand the ecosystem of the collection.

BIT Exchange Unveils XRP Options Trading

BIT Exchange Unveils XRP Options TradingBIT Exchange, a cryptocurrency derivatives platform, has announced the introduction of XRP options trading in a move that provides for more advanced trading dynamics within the digital assets space. The development, disclosed via a blog post published to the company’s website on Thursday, offers users the unprecedented opportunity to engage in XRP options trading without the need to possess the actual cryptocurrency.Photo by Kanchanara on UnsplashUS dollar settlementA distinguishing feature of this initiative is that profit and loss settlements will be conducted in US dollars. To ensure a seamless experience, BIT Exchange has partnered with OrBit Markets to maintain robust order book liquidity. This expansion of offerings complements the exchange’s existing suite, which already includes stalwarts like Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), Cardano (ADA), Toncoin (TON), and Milady (LADYS).Facilitating hedgingFor the uninitiated, options are derivative contracts that empower the holder with the right to buy or sell the underlying asset at a predetermined price before a specified date. Call options grant the holder the buying privilege, while put options provide the selling prerogative. Typically deployed for hedging purposes, options play a pivotal role in mitigating bullish or bearish risks, and they can also act as a supplementary revenue source when traders “write” options alongside their spot market holdings.Justin Buitendam, BIT Exchange’s Global Head of Institutional Sales, remarked on the milestone, stating: “We’re excited to be among the early platforms offering XRP options trading to institutional and retail traders, providing both long and short options trading opportunities.”XRP boostAs of now, XRP boasts a market capitalization of $26.5 billion, positioning it as the world’s fifth-largest cryptocurrency. Notably, XRP, akin to several other alternative cryptocurrencies, exhibits greater volatility compared to the more established Bitcoin and Ether. The native token of the Ripple global payments network has experienced a market resurgence in recent weeks, following a positive outcome to a lawsuit taken by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) against Ripple Labs in the United States. In the wake of that decision, many cryptocurrency exchanges that had delisted the token immediately reinstated it. BIT Exchange’s strategic move to introduce XRP options aligns with those recent legal developments.Ripple, as the issuer of the XRP token, garnered a partial victory in its ongoing legal battle against the SEC. The court ruled that XRP is not classified as a security when traded on centralized exchanges. However, a different classification may apply when XRP is directly sold to institutions. The matter is far from settled, however. More recently, the SEC has sought permission to challenge the court’s verdict, underscoring the dynamic and evolving landscape of cryptocurrency regulations.BIT Exchange was spun out of Singapore-based crypto financial services platform, Matrixport. Both have been co-founded by Jihan Wu, better known for having founded leading Chinese crypto mining outfit Bitmain.
