Web3 & Enterprise·January 11, 2024, 7:45 AM

OKX Ventures, the investment wing of the Seychelles-based cryptocurrency exchange OKX, has disclosed a strategic A-round investment in Polyhedra Network.

Details of the investment have been outlined through a press release published via PRNewswire on Tuesday. Specializing in the creation of Web3 infrastructure, Polyhedra Network places a premium on interoperability, scalability and privacy, leveraging advanced zero-knowledge (ZK) proof technology.

Interoperability with privacy

A ZK proof provides the ability for one party to cryptographically prove to another party that it possesses a certain piece of information without having to reveal the actual underlying information to the other party. Central to Polyhedra Network's product offering is its zkBridge protocol, a system facilitating trustless and efficient cross-chain infrastructure for both layer-1 and layer-2 interoperability.

The protocol empowers the receiving chain to verify specific state transitions on the sending chain. This approach ensures robust security without external assumptions, effectively reducing the costs associated with on-chain verification. Polyhedra Network made an initial impact in 2023 with the launch of the "zkBridge Mainnet Alpha."

That product enabled interoperability over 20 layer-1 and layer-2 blockchains, including well-known networks such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, BNB Chain and Arbitrum.

Distributed proof system

The innovative strides of Polyhedra Network, which was founded in the United States by James Zhang, Tiancheng Xie and Nikhil Shah, continued in 2023 with the introduction of deVirgo, a novel distributed proof system expediting proof generation. The deVirgo protocol also incorporates recursive proofs which trim on-chain proof verification costs associated with zkBridge.

Last month, Polyhedra Network unveiled its Bitcoin messaging protocol with zkBridge, ushering trustless interoperability into the Bitcoin ecosystem through the use of ZK-proof technology.

Asian backing

By championing entrepreneurs contributing to the blockchain industry's advancement, OKX Ventures is helping to build innovative companies, bringing global resources and historical experience to the forefront of blockchain projects.

It is one of many Asia-centric venture firms to do so. Polyhedra has secured backing from Hong Kong’s Animoca Brands and HashKey Group, Singapore’s UOB Venture Management, NGC Ventures, Signum Capital and Foresight Ventures, alongside KuCoin Ventures.

In an initial funding round in February 2023, the UC Berkeley team attracted $10 million in funding. By April, a pre-Series A round had raised a further $15 million.

Dora Yue, the founder of OKX Ventures, expressed their honor in participating in the investment in Polyhedra Network's interoperability infrastructure. Yue lauded the creativity demonstrated by Polyhedra Network's team in developing advanced ZK-proof mechanisms, emphasizing the balance achieved between ZK interoperability and scalability.

OKX Ventures, with an initial capital commitment of $100 million, is committed to supporting Polyhedra Network's vision of seamlessly connecting the Web2 and Web3 worlds, aiming to attract a more extensive user base to the industry.

As the investment arm of the global crypto exchange platform, it dedicates itself to exploring top-tier blockchain projects on a global scale. Its focus is on fostering cutting-edge blockchain technology innovation, aspiring to support the healthy development of the global blockchain space and investing in long-term structural value.

OKX and HashKey plan partnership to promote industry development

HashKey Group, the Hong Kong-based regulated cryptocurrency exchange, is planning a partnership with crypto derivatives platform OKX.Photo by Ivan Lau on UnsplashAdvancing innovation and growthThe duo announced their plans via a press release which was published on Tuesday. The objective of the partnership is aimed at advancing compliant virtual asset innovation and industry growth in Hong Kong. The collaboration between HashKey Group and OKX capitalizes on the strengths and resources of both entities to elevate services and experiences. Harnessing these strengths the pair intend to contribute towards Hong Kong's emergence as a hub for the regulated virtual asset industry. The partnership will encompass various industry initiatives, including blockchain infrastructure development, product diversification and virtual asset investment education within the region. First regulated exchangeNotably, HashKey Group achieved a significant milestone last year by becoming the first Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission (SFC)-regulated crypto exchange authorized to serve retail users. The firm secured Type 1 and Type 7 licenses from the SFC, in line with the  "compliance first” approach the company is taking. Founded in 2018 and headquartered in Hong Kong, with operations in Singapore and Tokyo, HashKey Group caters to a diverse clientele, including retail investors, institutions, family offices, funds and professional investors. The services offered by the company encompass a Hong Kong SFC-regulated virtual asset exchange, global asset management and wealth management, with a focus on blockchain and digital assets, blockchain node validation, tokenization and Web3 incubation and community operations. Its Singaporean subsidiary, digital asset fund manager HashKey Capital, secured a regulatory license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) in December. Unicorn statusOKX Ventures, the investment division of OKX, played a crucial role in supporting HashKey's Series A financing. That Series A funding round saw HashKey achieve unicorn status with a $1.2 billion valuation earlier this month. OKX Ventures focuses on investing in projects that nurture sustainable growth within the global virtual asset ecosystem. OKX, already serving over 50 million users worldwide, has a notable presence with sponsorships that include Manchester City FC in the English Premier League (EPL) and the McLaren Formula 1 racing team. Earlier this month, the company expanded its sponsorship with McLaren. The digital asset exchange began onboarding customers in Hong Kong a month before officially launching operations there, aligning with the city's new virtual asset service providers (VASPs) regime implemented on June 1 of last year. In March 2023, OKX established a Hong Kong entity to launch virtual asset services, with plans to apply for the virtual asset service provider (VASP) license and Type 1 & 7 licenses under the Securities and Futures Ordinance. Approval is anticipated by early 2024. The collaborative effort between HashKey Group and OKX marks a significant stride in advancing compliant virtual asset innovations in Hong Kong. This partnership aims to enhance service offerings and customer experiences, further solidifying Hong Kong's position as a regulated virtual asset industry hub. By leveraging their respective strengths, these industry leaders are well placed to assist in elevating Hong Kong's standing in the global virtual asset landscape, fostering growth and compliance in this rapidly evolving sector.

Metaplanet aspires to acquisition of digital bank

The CEO of Japanese hotel operator turned Bitcoin treasury company, Metaplanet, has suggested that the firm may consider acquiring a digital bank in the future. Simon Gerovich, the firm’s CEO and a former Goldman Sachs banker, told the Financial Times that part of the second stage of its overall strategy may involve “acquiring a digital bank in Japan and providing digital banking services that are superior to the services which retail now is getting.”Photo by Kanchanara on UnsplashBitcoin gold rushGerovich explained that phase one of Metaplanet’s plan involves participating in what he considers to be “a bitcoin gold rush.” He added: “We need to accumulate as much bitcoin as we can . . . to get to a point where we’ve reached escape velocity and it just makes it very difficult for others to catch up.” Other firms are jumping on the bandwagon, as within a very short timeframe, 140 companies around the world have adopted a Bitcoin treasury strategy. Metaplanet currently weighs in as the fifth-largest corporate holder of Bitcoin globally. Right now, the company holds 15,555 BTC. Its target is a holding of 210,000 BTC, which equates to around 1% of the total Bitcoin supply. Based on current pricing, such a holding would be worth in the region of $23 billion. Acquiring cash-generating businessesOnce the company has accomplished its Bitcoin accumulation goals, it plans to move on to phase two, acquiring cash-generating businesses while leveraging its Bitcoin holdings in order to do so. Using Bitcoin as collateral, Gerovich said that Metaplanet will “get cash that we can use to buy profitable businesses.”  While inroads are being made with regard to the acceptance of Bitcoin as a corporate reserve asset, it is earlier days still for its acceptance as collateral. Last month, the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) in the United States, ordered Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, key government-sponsored players in the American mortgage market, to explore the treatment of Bitcoin as eligible collateral for mortgages. Standard Chartered and crypto exchange OKX launched a pilot program earlier this year geared towards the use of crypto for collateral purposes. Gerovich talks in terms of Metaplanet’s phase two plan playing out at a time “when bitcoin, like securities or government bonds, can be deposited with banks and then they’ll provide very attractive financing against that asset.” The Metaplanet CEO stated that he expects the Bitcoin accumulation phase of the plan to play out over a period of between four and six years. The Tokyo-listed firm started accumulating Bitcoin in 2024. Some market participants are backing Metaplanet’s strategy with their own money. Global investment management firm Capital Group recently became Metaplanet’s second-largest investor. Bitcoin treasury criticsHowever, the emergence of Bitcoin treasury firms has also drawn quite a few detractors. Some critics point out that many of these companies have a negative operating income. Market analyst Caleb Franzen asserted that even after buying Bitcoin, they’re still junk companies. Others point out that too many firms have jumped on the Bitcoin treasury bandwagon, making the prospect no longer attractive. Fakhul Miah, managing director of GoMining Institutional, is also concerned about copycats. He told Cointelegraph that ”if these smaller firms crash, we could see a ripple effect that hurts Bitcoin’s image.”

Bitcoin Miners Likely Selling at $28K Level, Says Matrixport

Bitcoin Miners Likely Selling at $28K Level, Says MatrixportAccording to a report by Singapore-headquartered digital asset financial services provider Matrixport, Bitcoin (BTC) is facing selling pressure at the $28,000 price level, possibly due to miners offloading their newly mined coins. The report, cited by CoinDesk on Friday, suggests that miners are being compelled to liquidate their inventory as profit margins have contracted in recent weeks.Photo by Pixabay on PexelsHashrate all-time highMining has become an intensely competitive and often unprofitable endeavor due to the ongoing rise in Bitcoin miner difficulty. The hashrate, or measure of how easily miners can discover a new block of Bitcoin reached an all-time high earlier this week. Markus Thielen, Head of Research at Matrixport, noted that given the current input cost and potential revenue expectations, most machines produced before 2022 appear to be unprofitable.“At the current input cost and potential output revenue expectations, most of the machines produced before 2022 appear to be unprofitable,” Thielen wrote.Forced sellingConsequently, miners are forced to sell their inventory at the current level rather than holding out for higher prices, which Matrixport anticipates. The report highlights the significant upside potential for miners if Bitcoin prices were to increase by 10% or more, as profitability could quadruple. The narrowing profit margins for miners reflect the challenges they face in a highly competitive market. As mining difficulty continues to rise, miners must allocate more resources and computing power to mine new coins, reducing their profitability. The situation is particularly tough for miners operating older machines, which are less efficient and more costly to run.The selling pressure exerted by miners can have a short-term impact on Bitcoin’s price. However, Matrixport’s analysis suggests that if Bitcoin experiences a notable price increase, miners could see a substantial improvement in their profitability. This potential upside convexity creates an incentive for miners to continue their operations and withstand the current market conditions.Ordinals bring increased feesOn the other hand one recent development that is assisting miners is the increase in transaction fees, with the development of Bitcoin Ordinals and BRC-20 tokens over the course of the past six months. That interest seems to be ongoing, and if anything we’re likely to see further development of tokens running on top of the Bitcoin blockchain. On Thursday, Seychelles-based crypto trading platform OKX proposed a new BRC-30 token standard which would enable staking of those tokens, alongside staking of bitcoin.Singapore-based Matrixport is a portfolio company of crypto investment venture capital firm Foresight Ventures, which is also headquartered in Singapore. The firm provides a suite of products that it is positioning to be innovative and easy to use, offering an all-in-one crypto financial services platform, enabling users to earn, invest, loan, and trade digital assets. The Matrixport report indicates that miners are likely selling their Bitcoin at the $28,000 level due to squeezed profit margins. While this selling pressure may affect short-term price dynamics, the potential for increased profitability if Bitcoin prices rise significantly provides miners with an optimistic outlook for the future.
