Web3 & Enterprise·March 20, 2024, 2:31 AM

The Korea Security Token Offering (KSTO), a South Korea-based association dedicated to providing compliance guidelines for STO projects, announced on Monday that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with blockchain company Metalab for STO mainnet development. The news was reported by local media outlet Ajunews. Through the MOU, the two institutions plan to create a blockchain platform for local blockchain companies, catering to their needs for STO issuance.

The KSTO is an association aiming to provide consultation services on STO design and development and assist blockchain projects in complying with laws and regulations, contributing to building a healthy blockchain ecosystem.

Meanwhile, a member of the KSTO, Metalab is a blockchain firm with expertise in developing crypto tokens and decentralized applications, or DApps. The company is reportedly participating in an STO mainnet development project led by the KSTO.

STO infrastructure catering to Korean firms and investors

Mainnet refers to the primary blockchain network where actual crypto transactions take place, such as the Ethereum or Solana platform. Mainnets, which operate on their own based on their independent infrastructures, are highly valued in the crypto markets due to the complexity of developing such networks.

This blockchain mainnet project involving Metalab will offer basic infrastructures that enable large-scale STO transactions, with plans to release features for STO issuance and management in connection with crypto wallets.

An KSTO official stated that the institution aims to support companies willing to issue STOs, from both technological and legal perspectives. The person highlighted the institution’s commitment to creating an STO ecosystem tailored for Korean companies, saying that the project will create a regulation-compliant, user-friendly platform and develop it to a level where it can rival the industry’s leading players like Polymesh, a prominent security token platform.

Axie Infinity Teams Up with CyberKongz in Blockchain Gaming Revival

Axie Infinity Teams Up with CyberKongz in Blockchain Gaming RevivalIn a bid to reinvigorate the world of blockchain gaming, Sky Mavis, the company behind the groundbreaking play-to-earn (P2E) blockchain game Axie Infinity, has announced an exciting partnership with CyberKongz, an Ethereum-based non-fungible token (NFT) collection.Together, they are set to develop a more comprehensive gaming ecosystem for the Ronin blockchain. Sky Mavis originated in Vietnam and came to prominence for developing the first major breakthrough for blockchain gaming within the crypto space. The company’s ties with Vietnam continue although it has since established its headquarters in Singapore. While the announcement, made via a blog post published on Tuesday, has sparked curiosity about a brand-new game on the horizon, specific details remain under wraps. Kathleen Osgood, Sky Mavis’ Head of Business Development, revealed that the upcoming game will be designed to be interoperable, seamlessly integrating with existing Axie Infinity experiences.Photo by Bestami Sarıkaya on UnsplashMoving to the Ronin blockchainBut the partnership goes beyond just creating a new game. It also includes the migration of CyberKongz’s popular Play & Kollect game, which is based on the Polygon blockchain. The move to the Ronin blockchain opens up new opportunities for CyberKongz to expand its user base and tap into Ronin’s thriving gaming community.Axie Infinity first captured the gaming world’s imagination in 2021 when it introduced the “play-to-earn” concept. This groundbreaking model allowed players to earn valuable cryptocurrency tokens while playing the game. It quickly became the leading project by sales volume in the burgeoning NFT space, according to data from CryptoSlam. On the other hand, CyberKongz also made headlines in 2021 when it impressively burned $4 million worth of Ether. However, since the NFT craze of 2021, interest in blockchain gaming has seen a decline, with some crypto-based games, such as Neopets, even transitioning to a non-crypto approach.Play-to-earn deficienciesSky Mavis Co-Founder, Aleksander Larsen, acknowledged earlier this year that the play-to-earn model needed improvement to thrive. He emphasized that games must prioritize fun and feature a robust economic system that enables players to earn rewards. Despite this, Kathleen Osgood remains optimistic that the blockchain gaming space can experience a revival through an experience that truly understands the motivations driving users towards Web3.According to Osgood, many teams in the space have merely attempted to replicate what worked in Web2, which may not be enough to drive explosive growth. Instead, she believes that attracting a massive audience lies in taking an innovative approach to leverage the unique offerings of Web3, appealing to users who are naturally drawn to its decentralized and rewarding nature.Gaming evolutionSky Mavis has started opening up its infrastructure to the Web3 ecosystem through the Ronin blockchain. By doing so, it hopes to create gaming communities that are not only more rewarding but also longer-lasting, fostering an environment of engagement and enthusiasm among players. As blockchain gaming continues to evolve, partnerships like the one between Sky Mavis and CyberKongz signal renewed efforts to iteratively improve on previous blockchain gaming models. With a new game on the horizon and the migration of CyberKongz to the Ronin blockchain, the stage is set for a new era of immersive and rewarding blockchain gaming experiences, building upon past efforts.

Report paints bright picture of India’s Web3 development

India Blockchain Week (IBW) 2024 was held on Dec. 4-5 in Bangalore with venture capital and blockchain advisory firm Hashed Emergent presenting a report at the event, with positive findings with regard to India’s Web3 sector. Titled “India's Web3 Landscape 2024 Report,” the research was presented at IBW 2024 by Hashed Emergent Senior Associate Sharanya Sahai. Photo by Asif Methar on PexelsGlobal frontrunnerThe report claims that the Web3 ecosystem in India has risen to the point where it is a global frontrunner when its progress is measured against Web3 development internationally. A broad network of Web3 startups has emerged, comprising of over 1,000 fledgling businesses.  Those enterprises are being supported in India by global investment, with Indian Web3 businesses having secured funding in excess of $3 billion since 2020. Taking a more recent snapshot, the report outlines that from January to September 2024, Indian Web3 startups received investment funding to the tune of $462 million, an 82% growth compared with the same period last year. These startups are spread across finance, infrastructure and entertainment niches within Web3, although the study found that the bulk of investment funding was placed with Web3 infrastructure businesses.  Home to 12% of Web3 developersHashed Emergent claims that India is home to 12% of the global pool of Web3 developers, second in the rankings on this metric with the greatest number of such developers living in the United States. However, the report maintains that India is in line to surpass the U.S. relative to the Web3 developer metric by 2027. The world’s most populous country also has strength and depth in terms of Web3 founders. It ranks third globally in terms of the overall size of its Web3 founder base. The Hashed Emergent report suggests that Indian founders, accounting for 5.4% of global Web3 startups, are responsible for driving growth in India relative to AI, decentralized physical infrastructure networks (DePIN) and scaling solution projects. Stand-out examples of Indian Web3 enterprises include exchange platforms CoinSwitch, WazirX and CoinDCX, crypto developer integration toolkit provider Transak, blockchain scaling platform Polygon, blockchain-based AI startup Sentient and blockchain protocol Biconomy. Hashed Emergent singled out Sentient and Web3 infrastructure platform Avail Network as projects which have showcased “India’s growing influence in decentralized technologies” in 2024. Adoption challengesThe report points to what Hashed Emergent terms as “an undeniable picture of India’s dominance in global crypto adoption.” That finding falls in line with a report produced by Chainalysis earlier this year, establishing India as the global leader in crypto adoption according to data it compiled.  However, in an opinion piece written by Mithil Thakore recently, an Indian co-founder and CEO of Dubai-based Velar, a Bitcoin liquidity protocol, Thakore claims that there is a disconnect between such metrics and the reality of adoption on the ground in India. In the case of the Chainalysis adoption index, the Velar CEO suggests that a “mirage of adoption” is presented, with massive signup numbers not translating into tangible active participation in the market.  While adoption rates are high, he feels that a greater level of active participation is being prevented due to what he terms as an “ambiguous” stance on cryptocurrencies by the Indian government. Regulatory ambiguity puts uncertainty in the minds of investors, holding back the industry’s growth, Thakore claims.
