Lackluster debut for crypto ETFs in Hong Kong

Markets·May 02, 2024, 12:02 AM

Hong Kong's debut of Bitcoin and Ether exchange-traded funds (ETFs) faced a tough start on their first day of trading, with volumes falling far below the record-breaking figures seen in the United States earlier in January 2024.

Tough act to follow

The launch of six spot Bitcoin and Ether ETFs, managed by prominent firms including China Asset Management, Harvest Global, Bosera and HashKey, marked a significant milestone for Hong Kong's cryptocurrency market. However, initial trading volumes indicated a notable contrast with the groundbreaking volumes witnessed during the debut of spot Bitcoin ETFs in the United States.

On their inaugural day, the total trading volume of the six new crypto ETFs in Hong Kong amounted to 87.58 million Hong Kong dollars ($12 million). This figure, while significant, paled in comparison to the $4.6 billion trading volume recorded for U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs on their first day, making the U.S. investment funds a tough act to follow.

Despite the disparity, industry experts like Justin d'Anethan, head of APAC business development at crypto market maker Keyrock, viewed the Hong Kong ETFs' performance positively within the local market context.

Absence of staking

D'Anethan told The Block that while the trading volume in Hong Kong didn't match the U.S. debut, it reflected a noteworthy level of investor interest, particularly considering the market dynamics in Hong Kong, which lacks access to mainland China investors. Bloomberg ETF Analyst Eric Balchunas suggested on X that people expected too much and that in reality, it was a good first day’s trading.

In an interview with Bloomberg, China Asset Management CEO Yimei Li stated that the products open the door “for a lot of RMB holders.” They didn’t show up on day one as d’Anethan pointed out, and he further noted that the absence of staking rewards for Hong Kong's spot Ether ETFs was a notable factor affecting investor decisions.

Data from the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX) cited by Cointelegraph illustrated the relatively subdued performance of the newly launched ETFs. Among them, the Bosera HashKey Bitcoin ETF and Ether ETF recorded modest trading volumes, while the China Asset Management (CAM) Bitcoin ETF demonstrated stronger traction, attracting significant trading volume by the closing bell.

Prior to trading, CAM's subscription size for its spot Bitcoin and Ether ETFs drew substantial interest, totaling $140 million during the initial offering period. This heightened anticipation was further fueled by the success of HKEX's cryptocurrency futures ETFs, which garnered $529 million in net inflows in the first quarter of 2024.

Fee exemptions

In an effort to stimulate investor participation, local fund managers and brokerages in Hong Kong offered fee exemptions for the new crypto ETFs. Harvest waived its management fee for six months, while Bosera extended a fee waiver period of four months.

Despite the optimism surrounding the launch, potential access to the ETFs by mainland Chinese investors remains uncertain, subject to Know Your Customer (KYC) policies. Meanwhile, the Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) stance on Ether ETFs in the U.S. complicates the prospects of listing such products in the near future.

While Hong Kong's debut of Bitcoin and Ether ETFs faced challenges in matching the fervor witnessed in the U.S., it nevertheless represents a significant step forward for the region's cryptocurrency market, signaling growing interest and participation in digital asset investments.

Crypto.com tops USD-supported crypto exchange trading volume in July

Singapore-headquartered crypto exchange platform Crypto.com has boosted its standing amongst its peers by achieving the largest spot crypto trading volume for the month of July where USD-supported exchanges are concerned. According to data published by The Block, the exchange platform achieved $68.85 billion in spot trading volume among USD-supported exchanges in July out of an overall total of $178.84 billion. American exchange platform Coinbase was next in the rankings, with a July trading volume total of $63.97 billion.Photo by Alexander Grey on UnsplashInstitutional client boost It’s understood that the uptick in trading volume experienced by the exchange platform is as a consequence of an increase in the number of institutional clients using Crypto.com’s trading services.  Giuseppe Giuliani, the managing director of Crypto.com, told Cointelegraph that more institutional clients are using the platform due to an improved product offering, together with stronger market conditions. Giuliani stated: “This growth has been primarily driven by the acquisition of new clients on the platform, both large institutions and advanced retail traders, and is being supported by stronger market conditions in 2024.” Giuliani told The Block that growth on the platform has played out over the medium term, stating:  "We have seen incremental market share growth month on month over the last 18 months.” Driving Bitcoin unit price Institutional adoption has been a developing theme in 2024. Some analysts have pointed to its importance in the attainment of an ever higher Bitcoin unit price. Crypto market analyst Willy Woo has suggested recently that a 3% allocation by institutions could lead to a Bitcoin unit price of $700,000. In its most recent quarterly report, global investment bank Canaccord Genuity outlined that there is growing institutional adoption relative to spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs). The launch of spot Ethereum ETF products in the U.S. last month is also understood to have helped towards an improved monthly trading volume for Crypto.com. Giuliani stated: “In the week of July 21 during which Ether ETF was launched, we have seen double-digit growth in our exchange’s Ether spot and perpetual volume week-on-week, building on consecutive weeks of robust volume growth.” Furthermore, the exchange platform claims to have seen increased interest and market participation from TradFi firms. Growing through licensing and sponsorship Crypto.com has attempted to further its market impact worldwide, including in Hong Kong, having applied for a trading license in the Chinese autonomous territory in February, and succeeding in that endeavor more recently according to subsequent reports. It received a license from the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in 2022, with the FCA awarding the company a further license, an Electronic Money Institution (EMI) license, in 2023. High profile sports sponsorships is another marketing strategy the firm has pursued in recent years. The company has claimed to be reaping the rewards of these deals, which it has made in Formula 1 (F1) motor racing and the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

CME Group Expands Crypto Reference Rates to Asian Markets

CME Group Expands Crypto Reference Rates to Asian MarketsUS derivatives marketplace CME Group is making strides in its efforts to cater to the Asian cryptocurrency market. In collaboration with crypto indices provider CF Benchmarks, the company is set to launch new reference rates for Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) aimed specifically at the Asia Pacific (APAC) region.Photo by Pierre Borthiry — Peiobty on UnsplashGoing live next monthThat’s according to a press release published by the company on Wednesday. These new rates, the CME CF Bitcoin Reference Rate APAC and CME CF Ether-Dollar Reference Rate APAC, are scheduled to become available on September 11, according to a joint announcement. This move comes in response to the growing demand from Asian investors and institutions for accurate pricing data during their local trading hours. Currently, a substantial portion of CME Group’s crypto volume, about 37%, occurs outside of US trading hours, with approximately 11% of trades originating from the APAC region. The new reference rates will be published daily at 4 p.m. Hong Kong time, allowing APAC-based participants to align their crypto price risk management more closely with their portfolio strategies.Building upon past effortsCME Group’s efforts to provide accurate and timely reference rates have been ongoing. The company initially introduced its Bitcoin Reference Rate (BRR) in 2016, followed by the Ether Reference Rate in 2018. The BRR calculates the US dollar price of one Bitcoin as of 4 p.m. London time. It leverages the trade flow data from major Bitcoin spot exchanges within a one-hour window to provide an average of volume-weighted medians across 12 five-minute intervals during that period.Notably, the newly announced Asia-focused reference rates will provide a variant to the existing rates tailored for London and New York. Giovanni Vicioso, CME Group’s Global Head of Cryptocurrency Products, emphasized that these APAC reference rates will facilitate more precise risk management for institutional clients utilizing Bitcoin and Ether futures products in their active portfolios or structured products like ETFs.Focusing on AsiaCME Group’s expansion into the APAC region aligns with a broader trend of institutional interest in cryptocurrencies in Asia. The region has seen regulatory developments aimed at providing clarity to crypto businesses over the course of the past twelve months while a lack of regulatory clarity currently prevails in the United States. This move also coincides with the company’s push to further engage with the global crypto derivatives market, which accounts for around 75% of the overall crypto trading volume.CME’s decision to launch Asia-focused reference rates is a strategic move to tap into the growing interest in cryptocurrencies from the Asia Pacific region. By offering accurate pricing information during APAC trading hours, the company aims to provide institutions and investors with better tools to manage their cryptocurrency price risks effectively. From the perspective of crypto market participants more broadly, the move is encouraging given that it comes from the world leader in derivatives markets.
