Turkish lira becomes third largest fiat currency in crypto trading

Markets·June 13, 2024, 5:51 AM

The Turkish Lira (TRY) has become the third largest fiat currency by volume in the cryptocurrency market, according to a report by Kaiko. This milestone was reached as TRY's share of the crypto market hit an all-time high of 19% in early June. The increase in volume is attributed to the country's economic challenges, notably its high inflation rate, which has surpassed 70%, making the lira one of the most volatile fiat currencies globally.

Factors influencing the increase

The shift in the Turkish lira's position in the crypto market is partly due to increased foreign exchange volatility and currency devaluation, common catalysts for cryptocurrency adoption in developing economies. Additionally, geopolitical factors such as a record number of elections and diverging monetary policies have intensified market fluctuations. This environment has favored cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, which reached new highs against the lira in recent months. For instance, Bitcoin escalated to 2.3 million TRY in March from 979,000 TRY in October 2023. The recent adjustments in cryptocurrency trading platforms, particularly Binance's delisting of certain fiat trading pairs due to banking issues, have also increased the dominance of TRY in crypto transactions. This series of events underscores the growing interconnection between traditional and digital finance markets, highlighting the increasing role of cryptocurrencies in regions facing economic instability.

Japanese Games Publisher Suspends Metaverse Downloads

Japanese Games Publisher Suspends Metaverse DownloadsJapanese video game publisher Bandai Namco has taken the step of temporarily suspending downloads of its recently unveiled Gundam Metaverse, raising questions and concerns about a potential major leak within the project. In an official announcement on Thursday (local time), the company expressed regret over the temporary suspension of client file downloads, stating that the firm is sorry that downloading the client files for the Gundam Metaverse has been temporarily suspended.Photo by Jason Ng on UnsplashRecent game releaseGundam Metaverse was launched with the collaborative intention of Bandai Namco and Gundam fans, aimed at creating a community that contributes to future Gundam projects. The sudden halt to downloads came as a surprise, given that the game was released just this month. The Gundam Metaverse was initially slated to be open for a limited time in Japan and the US. It featured an “Early Access” phase for a select number of users, which commenced on October 6, followed by the “General Access” phase available to the public starting on October 12.During this time, visitors had the opportunity to immerse themselves in a 3D world inspired by the iconic Gundam anime. The virtual world included a store offering six distinct Gundam Plastic models, commonly known as Gunpla, and a space for digital live performances by artists affiliated with the Gundam series.Suspected design file flawsBandai Namco has remained tight-lipped about the reasons behind the decision to cease downloads, leaving fans and observers speculating about potential issues with the project. Speculation was further fueled by rumors that circulated online, suggesting that the game’s downloads contained unencrypted design files related to specific models from “Gundam SEED Freedom.”These rumors began circulating as early as mid-September when a Weibo user claimed to have shared images of the “Freedom Gundam” and “Justice Gundam” designs, scheduled to make their debut in “Gundam SEED Freedom.” This upcoming animated film is produced by Bandai Namco Filmworks and directed by Mitsuo Fukuda, with a release date set for January 26 next year, marking the 20th anniversary of the Gundam SEED franchise.Given that Gunpla models were set to be released in tandem with the film’s screening in January, the alleged leak of design files would be a substantial concern for Bandai Namco.Hong Kong news outlet HK01 reported:“There were a large number of 3D model CAD [computer-aided design] files of Gundam models hidden inside [a download], including 2024-only 3D model CAD files.”Metaverse visionBandai Namco set out its metaverse vision in March 2022 when it provided initial details on what it termed back then as its “Gundam Metaverse Project.” The project involved an outlay of $130 million for the company to get it off the ground. At the time, Bandai Namco saw its entry into the world of the metaverse as an opportunity for it to be “connected with fans,” becoming a hub so that those connections could run more deeply and broadly and result in greater enjoyment for IP fans, partners, group employees, and society worldwide.Bandai Namco’s decision to halt downloads remains a topic of intrigue that has left Gundam fans and industry observers eagerly awaiting further developments and clarifications from the gaming giant.

SK Geo Centric Launches Korea’s First Blockchain-Based Plastic Recycling Platform

SK Geo Centric Launches Korea’s First Blockchain-Based Plastic Recycling PlatformSK Geo Centric, a chemical affiliate of South Korea’s second largest conglomerate SK Group, has announced today the launch of the country’s first blockchain-based plastic recycling platform. This endeavor aims to ensure the safe and widespread use of recycled plastics by customers.Photo by mali maeder on PexelsAddressing environmental pollutionPlastic recycling has emerged as a promising solution to address environmental pollution. However, concerns have been raised about the source and safety of collected plastic waste. Recognizing the demand from customer manufacturers who utilize recycled plastic, SK Geo Centric developed the new platform to provide more comprehensive information than what is required by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS, which the company previously obtained. The ISCC PLUS certification is a voluntary program designed for circular products, including chemicals and plastics, derived from using renewable energy sources. It is administered by ISCC, an independent multi-stakeholder initiative based in Germany. While adhering to the same certification standards as ISCC EU, ISCC PLUS allows for customization to meet the requirements of other markets.Blockchain techSK Geo Centric’s innovative platform utilizes blockchain technology to record and store every step of the plastic recycling process, ensuring transparency and traceability. Intermediate producers and end-users can access the complete history of recycled plastic by scanning the QR code on the product. Information such as the types, sources, and proportions of plastic waste used in a product, as well as the quality of materials, will be readily available. The history records will be stored in the form of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), providing proof of authenticity for the product. This information can be shared via email among the relevant parties. Manufacturers can now demonstrate to their customers the specific recycled materials used in their products.Market growth and efficient distributionSK Geo Centric believes that the systematic management of history records will enhance the credibility of the plastic recycling market, leading to its growth. Transparent records of high-quality and safe plastic waste will facilitate trading. Furthermore, real-time information on the recycled plastic market will enable efficient distribution within the industry.Recycling facilityIn addition to the platform, SK Geo Centric plans to establish the Advanced Recycle Cluster in Ulsan, a city in southern Korea, later this year. The presence of this plastic recycling facility is expected to expand the scale of the recycling market and attract more participants.Na Kyung-soo, CEO of SK Geo Centric, highlighted the importance of trust among market participants in fostering the development of the recycled plastic sector. The company is committed to improving its platform to earn the trust of its customers.

3AC liquidators estimate 46% recovery while BVI court freezes $1B

3AC liquidators estimate 46% recovery while BVI court freezes $1BThe joint liquidators of the now-defunct Singaporean crypto hedge fund Three Arrows Capital (3AC) have provided creditors with an estimated 45.74% recovery rate for their claims in the bankrupt estate. Meanwhile, in parallel proceedings in the British Virgin Islands (BVI), a court has frozen $1 billion of founders’ assets.According to The Block, the details were disclosed in a December report to creditors by joint liquidators Russell Crumpler and Christopher Farmer of Teneo, the firm appointed to oversee the liquidation of the failed business.$1.16B in assetsAs of Dec. 18, the estimated value of 3AC’s assets was reported to be $1.16 billion, while claims totaling $2.7 billion are expected to be recognized for distribution. The liquidators highlighted that settlements in litigation against various parties, including DCG, Genesis and BlockFi, increased reported assets by an estimated $292 million. It’s important to note that the BlockFi settlement is still pending approval.A total of 154 claims, valued at $3.4 billion, were filed against the 3AC estate. The report indicates that $200 million of claims were not admitted for distribution, and $322 million in claims have either been rejected or are expected to be rejected. Additionally, $76 million in claims are currently under dispute. The report reveals that initial distributions to creditors are being planned for the first quarter of the upcoming year.Illiquid tokensThe breakdown of assets reveals that a large majority are illiquid tokens, subject to vesting periods, comprising 82% of the total. Only 6% of the portfolio is liquid, while equity and investments account for 6.9% and 4.8% is in cash. These illiquid tokens, totaling $563 million at current prices, consist of 13 different tokens with vesting schedules unlocking assets over the next three years, reaching $200 million by the end of 2024.To date, the liquidators have staked some of these tokens, resulting in $5.4 million in staking rewards. Liquidation efforts, including the sale of $34.5 million worth of liquid tokens and $15 million in NFTs, along with other asset sales, have generated a total of $66 million.Photo by Kemp Fuller on UnsplashFrozen assetsIn a related development, Bloomberg reported on Thursday that a British Virgin Islands court has frozen assets totaling $1.1 billion belonging to 3AC co-founders Su Zhu and Kyle Davies, along with Davies’ wife Kelly Chen. The liquidators filed a claim for insolvent trading against the founders for $1.078 billion, with additional claims against Davies for $66 million and Chen for $4.6 million.Teneo outlined the rationale behind the move in the following statement it made to Decrypt:“The worldwide freezing order has been sought in connection with claims that are being pursued by the liquidators that allege, amongst other things, that the Founders should be held responsible for causing 3AC’s position to deteriorate by an amount that is equivalent to the value of the freezing orders sought.”Su Zhu, who was under house arrest for the last few weeks, became free on Dec. 20. Zhu had been arrested in Singapore on Sept. 29 and sentenced to four months imprisonment, serving two-thirds of his sentence under house arrest.Throughout the bankruptcy proceedings, legal fees have accumulated to $49.7 million while the report suggests ongoing efforts to maximize creditor recovery.
