StraitsX and Visa partner with RedotPay to enable credit card launch

Web3 & Enterprise·February 13, 2025, 7:30 AM

StraitsX, a Singapore-headquartered digital asset infrastructure provider, has partnered with global payments firm Visa and Hong Kong-based RedotPay to enable the Hong Kong firm in launching a crypto credit card product offering.

The partnership combines Visa’s global payments network with StraitsX’s facilitation as a means of accessing that network. Meanwhile, RedotPay’s proprietary real-time conversion technology enables users to spend crypto using the card on goods and services priced in fiat currency.

Visa BIN sponsorship

StraitsX published details of the development on its blog on Feb. 11. The company is authorized by Visa to act as a Visa BIN (Bank Identification Number) sponsor. Essentially, it acts as the conduit through which RedotPay is enabled to issue its crypto credit card.

By leveraging StraitsX’s BIN sponsorship, RedotPay has cut through the complexity and cost that would be involved in trying to gain principal membership of the Visa network. Furthermore, as a BIN sponsor, StraitsX will handle compliance and security.

The card offering allows holders to make purchases using crypto through the global network of merchants that accept Visa payments.

Jason Tay, head of commercial at StraitsX, described the partnership as “a game changer for everyday retail use cases,” on the basis that the new card issuance will enable users to leverage their digital assets with ease in respect of daily transactions.

Both companies emphasized that the partnership has led to a product offering that bridges the gap between digital assets and conventional commerce. Tay said that it “will transform how consumers interact with cryptocurrencies in the retail space." He added:

"By combining our technology with Visa's vast network, we are making it easier than ever for users to seamlessly integrate digital assets into their everyday spending.”

Targeting the unbanked & crypto users

RedotPay CEO and co-founder Michael Gao said that the collaboration marked a significant step forward in the company’s mission to make crypto payments accessible and user-friendly, while contributing towards the mass adoption of cryptocurrencies within payment systems. “Our users will enjoy the flexibility of spending their digital assets just like traditional currency,” he added. It’s understood that the product offering targets crypto users primarily in Singapore.

Adeline Kim, Visa’s country manager for Singapore and Brunei, highlighted the potential of the card offering, given that over 35% of digital asset owners in Singapore use them for retail purchases. That data emerged via a Visa study which was completed in 2023. The same study found that close to six in 10 consumers in Singapore are aware of digital assets.

While this marks the official launch of the product, RedotPay soft-launched the card in late 2024.

StraitsX has been influential in enabling other crypto-related payments systems in Asia. Last December it assisted Thailand’s Kasikornbank (KBank) in rolling out a Thai baht to Singaporean dollar cross-border payments solution implicating the use of stablecoins. The company received Major Payments Institution (MPI) licenses from the Monetary Authority of Singapore in July 2024.

Finblox Launching Tokenized US Treasury BondsHong Kong-based cryptocurrency firm Finblox has unveiled a groundbreaking solution aimed at meeting the growing demand among crypto investors for traditional assets that generate yields. By launching tokenized rights to US Treasury Bills (T-Bills), the company seeks to bridge the gap between the crypto and traditional financial worlds. In a tweet thread posted on Tuesday, the company set out some detail on the product offering it has been working on. Finblox is a crypto app, with the enterprise being backed by leading venture capital firms such as Dragonfly Capital, Sequoia Capital, and Saison Capital. This innovative offering provides crypto investors with access to a highly secure AAA-rated financial asset, leveraging the advantages of blockchain technology.Photo by Karolina Grabowska on PexelsYield generationUnlike stablecoins, which have failed to deliver substantial returns, and crypto lending, which carries notable risks as recent defaults and insolvencies in the digital asset sector have shown, tokenized US T-Bills provide a reliable investment option.By converting the rights to these assets into digital tokens that can be traded and held within the blockchain ecosystem, Finblox enables fractional ownership. This means that users can invest small amounts and still earn proportional yields, opening up investment opportunities to a wider range of individuals.Through the Finblox platform, users can directly benefit from the yield generated by these tokenized T-Bills. Historically, Treasury Bills have been regarded as blue-chip financial assets, offering reliable returns and serving as a benchmark for global financial markets.OpenEden integrationTo ensure transparency and security, Finblox has integrated the T-Bill vault of Singapore-based OpenEden with decentralized blockchain Chainlink. This integration provides on-chain verification, guaranteeing that Finblox’s T-Bill tokens are backed by US Treasury securities, USDC stablecoins, and US dollars on a 1:1 basis.Finblox founder Peter Hoang emphasized the seamless and secure bridge that T-Bills offer between traditional and emerging markets in an interview with Tech in Asia. He stated: “With T-Bills, we are offering users a real-world asset while also benefiting from the custody of a regulated financial institution. It’s a seamless and secure bridge for both traditional and emerging markets, bringing safer yields to a wide range of users.”To access Finblox’s T-Bill tokens, investors need to follow a straightforward process. Initially, they must obtain USDC from a reputable exchange, either through Finblox or other exchanges. Once the know-your-customer (KYC) verification process is completed, users can swap their USDC for T-Bills within the Finblox platform. To enhance transparency, Finblox makes its wallets publicly available, enabling users to track deposits and withdrawals and verify the accuracy of transactions. The company also holds working capital in hot wallets to facilitate withdrawals below 2% of the entire pool, ensuring swift processing within three business days. It’s understood that Finblox will market the product offering to users in the Philippines, Indonesia, India, and Vietnam, among other jurisdictions within Asia.

This unique framework empowers specific entities within Uzbekistan’s crypto sphere to provide specialized services. JSV Ravnaq Bank has now been registered as a member of this regime, enabling its active participation in the pilot phase of the nation’s crypto card project.Virtual bank cardThis initiative is poised to introduce a virtual bank card named “CRYPTO CARD — UzNEX.” The card’s standout feature is its ability to facilitate automatic fund addition to users’ primary accounts. This is achieved by swiftly converting crypto assets from a digital wallet on a partner crypto exchange platform.A vital aspect of the crypto card’s development lies in its compatibility testing with various financial systems, including the widely used Mastercard payment platform. According to NAPP’s statement, the participant bank within the special regulatory regime will be rigorously testing the integration of the automated banking system, crypto-exchange information system, bank processing center, and the MasterCard international payment system.December launchNotably, the addition of Ravnaq Bank marks the second entrant into the project, with Kapital Bank being the first participant approved in May. While Kapital Bank’s testing phase commenced at the end of June 2023, Ravnaq Bank is set to initiate its test launch by the end of October 2023. Both banks are expected to launch the full project by late December, in accordance with NAPP’s timeline.Beyond these private banks, the Special Regulatory Sandbox Regime also includes UZINFOCOM, a company authorized to develop NFT certificates based on distributed data registry technology.
