Piggycell is improving the ownership and management of charging infrastructures through DePINs and real-world assets (RWAs). By integrating blockchain technology with physical assets, Piggycell aims to empower users through decentralized ownership, transparent profit-sharing models and enhanced community engagement.

Since its establishment in 2020, Piggycell has made advancements in developing its infrastructure. It currently has over 13,000 charging hubs with over 100,000 batteries across all cities in South Korea. As a key player in the country's portable battery rental industry, Piggycell boasts nearly four million users and commands over 90% of the market share.

One of the notable investors in the round is Animoca Brands, a Web3 company that uses blockchain technology to provide digital property rights to consumers worldwide, supporting the development of the open metaverse. Animoca Brands is one of the most active investors in Web3, with a portfolio of over 540 investments.

Another key investor in this round is Internet Computer (ICP), a third-generation blockchain developed by the DFINITY Foundation that enables full end-to-end decentralization without the use of cloud computing. With its cryptographic methods, ICP supports fully on-chain applications, including complex web services.

The investment from Animoca Brands, ICP and other investors further endorses Piggycell as a DePIN platform that bridges traditional Web2 services with the Web3 ecosystem.

Having received backing from Web3 investors, Piggycell is now working to accelerate its decentralized infrastructure network with next-generation blockchain capabilities. Piggycell plans to launch its DePIN platform in the first half of 2025.

Turkey considers limited tax on crypto transactions, not profits

Turkey has decided not to tax profits from stocks and cryptocurrencies but is considering implementing a “very limited” tax on transactions, according to Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek. In a recent interview in Ankara, Şimşek stated the government's intention to ensure every financial sector contributes to the national revenue without specifying the size of the potential tax. He emphasized that the approach aims to enhance fairness and effectiveness in the taxation system. Historically, in 2008, Turkey lowered its tax rate on stock market profits from 10% to 0%, promoting investment in the stock market. Despite earlier reports from Bloomberg suggesting new taxes on gains from stock and cryptocurrency trading, the government has clarified its position to only consider transactional taxes.Photo by Engin Yapici on UnsplashCrypto tax regulationsCurrently, Turkey lacks specific regulations for taxing cryptocurrencies but is actively working to establish a comprehensive legal framework for digital assets. A bill introduced by Turkey’s ruling party on May 16 mandates crypto businesses to obtain licenses and adhere to international standards. This includes regulation by capital markets boards and mandatory revenue collection from crypto service providers. The bill also aims to ban foreign crypto brokers, fostering a locally regulated ecosystem and addressing concerns from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to remove Turkey from its "gray list." According to a report by Chainalysis, a blockchain analytics firm, Turkey ranks fourth globally in cryptocurrency market activity, with an estimated trading volume of $170 billion between July 2022 and June 2023, surpassing countries like Russia, Canada and Germany. Since 2021, Turkish regulations have prohibited the use of cryptocurrencies for payments, reflecting a cautious approach towards the integration of digital assets into the financial system.

Bitget pledges $10 million to empower women in Web3

In a bid to foster gender diversity and inclusivity within the blockchain industry, cryptocurrency exchange Bitget has committed $10 million to invest in women-led startups in the Web3 and blockchain sector. Blockchain4HerThe announcement, made at the Web3 Hub Davos event on Tuesday, a part of the World Economic Forum 2024, highlights Bitget's initiative in promoting equality in a rapidly advancing sector. Bitget's research reveals a stark gender bias within the blockchain sector, with only 6% of startup funding directed towards female-led projects. Bitget’s Blockchain4Her project has been established as a direct consequence, in order to address this imbalance. Blockchain4Her has been designed to provide crucial support, mentorship and recognition to women in the industry. The initiative will include tailored incubation programs, pitch competitions exclusively for women-founded startups and the Women in Blockchain Summit & Awards, aimed at acknowledging outstanding achievements by women in the blockchain space. Recognizing the need for comprehensive measures, Bitget aims to confront the gender disparity by creating a nurturing environment through these multifaceted efforts. By offering specialized support for female entrepreneurs, the initiative aims to encourage greater involvement and leadership roles for women in the blockchain space.Photo by Shubham Dhage on UnsplashIndustry ambassadorsAs part of the Blockchain4Her program, Bitget plans to invite industry leaders to serve as ambassadors, supporting gender diversity in the blockchain industry. These ambassadors will play a crucial role in advocating, engaging and driving positive changes, fostering an inclusive environment for women in the blockchain sector. Bitget's commitment to addressing gender disparity in the blockchain industry is further underscored by its recent report on Web3 venture capital funding by gender. The report, published on Jan. 11, revealed that less than 7% of VC funding in the industry went to female-led startups, emphasizing the need for comprehensive measures to increase inclusiveness and accessibility for women in the blockchain sphere. The company is itself leading from the front on the issue, with Gracy Chen as managing director, one of the few crypto exchange platforms headed up by a female executive. Blockchain4YouthIt’s not the first time that the company has embarked upon a corporate social responsibility-themed project. It follows Bitget's earlier commitment to nurturing talent through the “Blockchain4Youth” initiative, which was announced in May of last year. The $10 million initiative set out to serve the objective of “empowering and inspiring younger generations to use Web3 and crypto tools to create and engage in a decentralized space.” It focuses on providing courses through Bitget Academy, hosting university lectures on Web3, incubating innovative projects by young entrepreneurs and organizing hackathons for individuals under 30 to identify promising leaders. A by-product of Blockchain4Youth also involved the company commencing to invest in Indian blockchain startups in November. Bitget's Blockchain4Her initiative represents a significant step towards fostering a more equitable blockchain space. By championing inclusion and diversity, Bitget not only contributes to a fairer industry but also supports the sustainability and growth of the broader technology sector.

Its Telegram channel has just been established, it doesn’t have a website, while its Discord and Twitter channels are also recently established with modest followings. Anonymity is a feature in Web3 and perhaps that’s the approach this project is taking. Whatever the background, it has to be said that there must be some talent behind the project for it to secure the backing of an entity like AliExpress by way of this partnership. This recent announcement was initially made on AliExpress’ official Twitter account but that tweet has since been removed. The project itself tweeted out news of the partnership on Thursday. The Moment3!’s mission, as stated in its Twitter bio, revolves around utilizing NFTs to immortalize special moments on the blockchain.According to the project’s Discord channel, The Moment3! aims to connect with real-world businesses and provide NFT owners with benefits and exclusive rights beyond the collectible value.NFT debutThis marks AliExpress’ initial venture into the NFT market, although its parent company, Alibaba, has previously explored the Web3 space. In September 2022, Alibaba’s luxury shopping platform, Tmall Luxury Pavilion, introduced an immersive shopping metaverse experience and introduced the Meta Pass, granting users free access to virtual experiences.Alibaba-Centric Web3 projectsThere have been several other Web3-related investments and developments related to Alibaba Group companies in recent months.Last month, Alibaba Cloud, one of the world’s largest cloud computing companies, joined forces with the Avalanche layer one blockchain project to introduce “Cloudverse,” a launchpad facilitating the creation of personalized spaces within the metaverse for businesses. In April Alibaba Cloud was the co-organizer of the Web3 Festival, an event held in Hong Kong to showcase the autonomous Chinese territory for the development of the Web3 sector. The four-day event attracted 10,000 attendees. In early May, Artifact Labs, a Hong Kong-based start-up company that specializes in metaverse and Web3 product offerings, raised $3.25 million in a funding round led by Blue Pool Capital. The investment firm is the personal investment vehicle of Alibaba founders Jack Ma and Joe Tsai.NFT warningAliExpress, owned by Alibaba Group, is a global e-commerce platform that does not cater to customers in mainland China, despite being headquartered in China. The Chinese government prohibited all cryptocurrency transactions in September 2021. NFTs remained legal although authorities recently issued a warning on their use, together with some guidelines. With its new collaboration, AliExpress is expanding its reach into the Web3 space and exploring the potential of NFTs. As the release date approaches, anticipation grows to witness the specific features and benefits offered by the 5,555 NFTs that will soon be available to the public.
