Korea’s Bithumb joins forces with Interpol to fight crypto crime

Policy & Regulation·March 14, 2025, 3:42 AM

South Korean crypto exchange Bithumb is working with the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) to combat global criminal activities involving digital assets.

According to Korean media outlet Joseilbo, Yoo Jung-ki, who heads Bithumb's Policy Support Office, met with Tomonobu Kaya, Assistant Director of Interpol's Financial Crime and Anti-Corruption Centre, during a recent meeting in Thailand. The gathering was part of a three-day event held from March 10 to 12, organized under Interpol's Project ViCTOR (Virtual assets-facilitated financial Crime – Trace, Obstruct and Recover), an initiative funded by Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During their meeting, the two officials explored ways to enhance cooperation while committing to maintaining a close, sustainable working relationship.

Exchange shares expertise

During his Bangkok visit, Yoo delivered a speech addressing emerging crypto crime trends and necessary regulatory changes to protect users. He also discussed the Financial Action Task Force's (FATF) guidelines and recommendations, along with South Korea's policies on anti-money laundering and combating terrorism financing (AML/CFT).

His presentation resonated with the audience, particularly when he emphasized the importance of collaboration between the public sector and crypto exchanges on multiple fronts, including recovering stolen funds from criminals.

Regarding the meeting, Yoo stated that he found it meaningful to participate, as a representative of South Korean crypto exchanges, in a gathering focused on developing global countermeasures against money laundering and digital asset crimes. He added that Bithumb is committed to supporting the international cooperative system aimed at preventing and recovering from crypto crimes.

Interpol’s efforts

The event also covered recent updates on Interpol's Global Rapid Intervention of Payments (I-GRIP) stop-payment mechanism, launched in 2022, and Singapore's evolving crypto regulatory landscape. In June last year, Interpol reported that police across 61 countries had collectively intercepted approximately $135 million in fiat currency and $2 million in cryptocurrency, with I-GRIP helping authorities track illicit proceeds from both types of currencies.

Interpol's involvement in investigating crypto crimes has been expanding recently. According to Cointelegraph, Argentine lawyer Gregorio Dalbon has requested that a prosecutor and judge issue an Interpol Red Notice for Hayden Davis, a co-creator of the LIBRA token allegedly linked to Argentine President Javier Milei. The controversial memecoin, launched last month, briefly reached a $4.5 billion market cap before its value collapsed.

Coinbase Ventures invests in Indian exchange CoinDCX amid mixed regulatory signals

Coinbase's venture capital arm, Coinbase Ventures, has invested in the India-based crypto trading platform CoinDCX, the American crypto exchange company said on its official blog. This move follows Coinbase's direct entry into the Indian market earlier this year. In March, Coinbase registered with the Financial Intelligence Unit–India (FIU-IND), announcing plans to launch products for retail investors.Photo by PiggyBank on Unsplash100 million crypto holdersWhile the investment sum remains undisclosed, Coinbase highlighted CoinDCX's strong performance indicators. As of July 2025, the Mumbai-headquartered exchange reported a user base of 20.4 million, accounting for about one-fifth of the country’s estimated 100 million crypto holders. CoinDCX also recorded $141 million in annualized group revenue, $165 billion in annualized transaction volumes, and $1.2 billion in assets under custody. The investment targets a market with high adoption. According to Chainalysis’ 2025 Global Crypto Adoption Index, India ranked first among 151 countries studied. Regulatory uncertainty in IndiaCoinbase’s push into India, however, comes amid a complex and often contradictory regulatory environment for digital assets. On one hand, India maintains a cautious stance. Profits from crypto transactions are taxed at a flat 30% rate, supplemented by applicable surcharges and an additional 4% cess. Recent reforms unveiled by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) did not mention the acceptance of crypto assets. Rather than supporting cryptocurrencies, regulators have focused on advancing the central bank digital currency (CBDC), the e-rupee, through pilot initiatives in deposit tokenization and a fintech sandbox. This conservative approach was also evident at the recent 6th Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai. According to Reuters, a handout given to speakers at the Oct. 7-9 event read, “Please avoid political, crypto, religious, or personal remarks on stage or at the venue.” On the other hand, some officials have signaled a willingness to engage. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Oct. 4 that India must prepare to engage with cryptocurrencies such as stablecoins, according to the Financial Times. She noted that no country can stay isolated from broader systemic shifts, possibly alluding to the pro-crypto policies emerging in the U.S. and the anticipated acceleration in adoption. Global exchanges resume operationsFurthermore, India has shown more openness to foreign crypto platforms lately. Bybit recently reinstated access to its mobile app for Indian users via the Apple App Store and Google Play. Last year, both Binance and KuCoin registered with the FIU-IND after paying penalties for earlier compliance violations. Binance was fined 188.2 million rupees (about $2.14 million), while KuCoin faced a lighter penalty of around $41,000.

Bank of Korea Explores Jeju, Busan, and Incheon for Citizen-Centric CBDC Pilot Test

Bank of Korea Explores Jeju, Busan, and Incheon for Citizen-Centric CBDC Pilot TestThe Bank of Korea (BOK) is reportedly reviewing three potential locations for a pilot test of a citizen-centric payment system utilizing the Korean Won central bank digital currency (CBDC). Instead of choosing Seoul, the nation’s capital city, the BOK is considering Jeju, Busan, and Incheon for the pilot. That’s according to local tech news outlet IT Chosun. The three cities have been selected as possible testbeds, and discussions with commercial banks are ongoing to move the project forward. Once a city is chosen, the BOK will collaborate with local retailers, including hypermarkets, to test the CBDC payment and distribution system.Photo by Ethan Brooke on UnsplashRegional currency modelThe CBDC test will be limited to a specific area, operating similarly to regional currencies issued by municipal governments to stimulate local economies. The CBDC wallet app will be available to all citizens, but its usage will be restricted to retailers in the designated area. Presently, Jeju, Busan, and Incheon already have their own regional currencies managed by local banks and financial institutions. However, implementing the CBDC system poses technical challenges. In remote tests last year, the BOK discovered that transaction speeds for small transfers were slower compared to traditional payment processing providers in regions outside the Seoul Metropolitan Area.Against this backdrop, the BOK seeks to recruit an unusually large number of tech experts in order to build a large-scale system for small payments. The bank has been actively hiring individuals for this purpose since the beginning of the year.CBDC test next yearWith the test scheduled for next year, the BOK aims to promptly select the test destination based on the system’s expected performance, estimated user numbers, and potential economic impact. While Busan is more or less shunned due to its large population, Jeju is emerging as a preferred choice. However, the final decision has been tentatively postponed due to internal issues within the BOK.Following the pilot test results, the BOK may gradually broaden the scope of the CBDC system. Meanwhile, in a similar development, China began its CBDC pilots in 2020 and has now expanded its CBDC use to 26 cities across 17 provinces.According to a BOK official, the Korean central bank is making seamless preparation for the test and engaging in discussions with commercial banks to explore their operating models and devise effective implementation strategies.

Wemade Introduces New DeFi Services on WEMIX3.0 Mainnet

Wemade Introduces New DeFi Services on WEMIX3.0 MainnetKorean blockchain game maker Wemade announced today that it will deploy decentralized finance (DeFi) services Kurrency and Konverter on the WEMIX3.0 Mainnet.Photo by Shubham Dhage on UnsplashTwo DeFi servicesKurrency utilizes a collateralized debt position (CDP) model, providing users with the capability to lock up a certain amount of virtual assets in order to mint, deposit, and swap the WEMIX Crypto Dollar (WCD). WCD, a cryptocurrency designed to minimize price fluctuations, complements the WEMIX Dollar, which is fully backed by the stablecoin USDC.Konverter is a new decentralized exchange (DEX) that combines the strengths of established DEXs. On June 9, Konverter will demonstrate functions that contribute to the efficiency of Kurrency. These functions involve seamless swaps between WCD and a variety of stablecoins. The full-fledged version of Konverter, set to launch in the second half of this year, will offer a broader array of swap services along with a “governance function” that doesn’t require forced lock-ups.Mainnet firstThe initial launch of Kurrency and Konverter will take place on the WEMIX3.0 Mainnet. Their goal is to magnify the ecosystem’s scope by boosting the utility of assets within the network and harnessing the synergies derived from decentralized apps (dApps).Multichain expansionLater, the two services on the WEMIX3.0 Mainnet will become more refined and reliable, paving the way for a multichain expansion. A successful implementation will improve interconnectivity between various blockchains, ultimately bolstering the value of the WEMIX ecosystem.Engaging usersStarting today, Kurrency is initiating various quests to encourage user participation. Users gaining experience from these quests will become eligible to join community events, promoting a more vibrant and engaged user base.
