Disrupting the delivery of government services

The blockchain-based cryptographic identity platform has the potential to revolutionize the way Bhutanese citizens access government services and conduct digital transactions. According to local Bhutanese media source BBS, the system was launched last week, giving Bhutanese citizens the opportunity to download the Bhutan NDI application directly to their mobile devices.

The user-friendly application promises a seamless experience, marked by a straightforward login process. Once registered, citizens will gain access to an array of government services. These will include construction approvals, land taxes, passport services, birth and death registration certificates, as well as Royal University of Bhutan degree certificates and various business-related services, all within the confines of their digital wallets.

Digital wallet alongside digital identity

Notably, the development could have major implications where the future use of digital currency in Bhutan is concerned. The NDI is not just a digital identity but a digital wallet.

That means that users have the option to link their bank accounts to the NDI app, facilitating financial transactions without the need to switch between multiple apps. As of now, the Bank of Bhutan is the first financial institution to integrate with the NDI app.

The Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan (RMA) entered into a collaboration with enterprise blockchain firm Ripple Labs in September 2021 to develop and trial central bank digital currency (CBDC).

Streamlining service delivery

The GovTech Agency, the driving force behind the NDI project, envisions that this digital innovation will streamline and simplify the often arduous process of interacting with government agencies. Jigme Tenzing, the Acting Secretary of the GovTech Agency, explained the transformative potential, stating:

“So, essentially what this enables for Bhutan is the ability to take almost all services and make them available online. This can virtually transform how services are provided in Bhutan. This is regarded as not only services that the government provides to citizens, but it can extend to even the private sector.”

Some concerns have been raised with regard to this consolidation of personal information within a single platform. The GovTech Agency has responded by emphasizing the incorporation of biometric data, including fingerprint and facial recognition, to enhance identity verification and authentication. It feels that these measures are sufficient to safeguard data privacy.

Crypto investment

There had been little in the way of news emerging from the South Asian country where decentralized technology was concerned until earlier this year when it became known that the kingdom had been an investor on the failed crypto lender platforms of Celsius and BlockFi.

It had done so through Druk Holdings and Investments (DHI), the commercial arm of the Royal Government of Bhutan. In May it emerged that DHI had entered into a partnership with Singapore-based Bitcoin mining firm Bitdeer, with the intention of developing green digital asset mining operations within the country.

The National Digital Identity Act of Bhutan 2023 received Royal Assent in July, solidifying Bhutan’s status as the first sovereign nation to implement a comprehensive decentralized identity framework.

Animoca Brands publishes positive financials in investor update

Hong Kong-based blockchain gaming and venture capital firm Animoca Brands has revealed a positive set of financial results in a recently published report.  In an investor update published to its website on March 5, the firm revealed key unaudited financials and business highlights for Q4 2024 and the previous 12 months ending on Dec. 31, 2024. Whereas other sectors report actual revenue figures, the gaming sector relies upon “bookings,” a measure of total sales and income generating activity of the company. The firm reported bookings of $314 million for last year. Compared with 2023, when Animoca reported bookings of $280 million, the firm has achieved a year-on-year increase of 12%.Photo by Lukas on PexelsAdvisory business growthThe company broke that financial measure down further, indicating that of the $314 million in sales and other income-generating activity, its Digital Asset Advisory (DAA) business accounted for $165 million of the overall amount. This disclosure is notable given that it represents a 116% increase, demonstrating a considerable growth in the firm’s advisory business and a diversification of its revenue streams. Animoca’s DAA business offers Web3 projects access to token advisory, and more specifically, consultation regarding tokenomics, marketing and listing. The business also consults in relation to node operation and trading services. Given that the company reported that bookings related to Web3 businesses weighed in at $110 million, Animoca’s advisory business has overtaken the contribution made by its Web3 businesses.  Contributing Web3 businessesAmong the Web3 businesses that made the greatest contributions were The Sandbox, Moca Network, Anichess, Gamee, nWay, Open Campus, TinyTap, Animoca Brands Japan, Eden Games, Blowfish Studios, Pixowl and Crazy Defense Heroes (TOWER). Bookings also included revenue generated via portfolio investments and partnerships. The company recorded $39 million, achieved through investment activities. In discussion with Cointelegraph, Animoca Brands co-founder and executive chairman, Yat Siu, said that the positive bookings numbers were a consequence of the firm’s ongoing efforts to innovate. He stated: “In 2024, we placed less emphasis on the US market, owing to various regulatory struggles experienced by other companies, and we also became more focused on providing support to the companies in our portfolio.” Animoca’s balance sheet holdings were robust in 2024, with $293 million in stablecoins and cash and $538 million in digital assets. Additionally, $538 million in off-balance sheet token reserves was reported. Stablecoin initiativeThe firm has developed a particular interest in the stablecoin sector through a partnership with British multinational financial services firm Standard Chartered and telecommunications firm HKT. That initiative involves the formation of a joint venture company which will go forward to issue a Hong Kong dollar (HKD)-backed stablecoin once a license has been secured from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA). Siu identified real-world asset (RWA) tokenization as another growth area for the company. The Animoca Brands co-founder outlined that he expects the firm to record further growth as 2025 progresses. Notwithstanding that, he warned that such expectations may be affected by adverse economic developments and risks, including the tariffs policy being pursued by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Indian police arrest eight more in $300M crypto scam

Indian police arrest eight more in $300M crypto scamIndian authorities have apprehended eight new individuals in connection with a sprawling $300 million (2500 crore Indian rupees) cryptocurrency scam that victimized approximately 100,000 people.According to a report published by local news media outlet The Times of India, the arrests have been made as part of an ongoing investigation. Of the eight individuals arrested, four have been identified as police officers.Photo by Big G Media on UnsplashLong running scamAs the investigation has unfolded, it has revealed an operation which is alleged to have been masterminded by Subhash Sharma, who remains at large. What has been termed the Himachal Pradesh crypto scam began to unravel in late September, although the Indian authorities believe that the origins of the scam stretch back to 2018.The perpetrators lured unsuspecting victims with investment schemes involving a local cryptocurrency known as Korvio Coin (KRO coins). As the scheme expanded, various other cryptocurrencies were introduced through fraudulent websites. One of these projects was abandoned after individuals had already invested, leading to significant financial losses.Targeting police officers and government officialsThe target audience for this particular scam has set it apart from that of others, given that police officers seem to have been involved while their colleagues are counted among the victims of the scam. Reports indicate that over 1,000 police personnel became entangled in the fraudulent web. While some officers were themselves victims, others made substantial gains. A few voluntarily took on the role of promoters, lending an air of credibility to the operation.Alongside police officers, 5,000 government officials also fell prey to the fraudulent investment schemes. The gravity of the situation became evident when it was revealed that around 56 complaints had been filed with police stations over the past two years.Multi-agency responseIn response to mounting concerns, multiple agencies, including the Enforcement Directorate and regional police teams, embarked on a comprehensive investigation under the guidance of a Special Investigation Team (SIT). The investigation has uncovered that over 100 individuals profited to the tune of $240,000 each, while another 200 reaped around $120,000 each from the scam. While the arrests have mounted to a total of 18 individuals, Sharma continues to evade capture. However, authorities have managed to identify and seize several properties associated with Sharma. In a separate investigation, the Enforcement Directorate is scrutinizing the roles of five women suspected of working as agents or promoters for the elusive kingpin. These developments underscore the vast extent of this crypto scam and the imperative for swift and thorough legal action. While crypto and Web3 more broadly have yet to fully unfold and reach full potential, there is no doubt that the sector has been blighted by ongoing scams, hacks and sharp practice. A recent report by Singapore-based blockchain security firm Immunefi estimated Q3 losses within the sector of $686 million. In August, a $120 million crypto ponzi scheme was uncovered in India’s Odisha state. Meanwhile, authorities in Hong Kong continue to come to terms with a fraud perpetrated by Dubai-based crypto exchange platform JPEX.As the investigation continues to unfold, the authorities are determined to bring all involved parties to justice, with a view towards sending a stern message to those who exploit unsuspecting individuals under the guise of cryptocurrency.

With RWA-backed investments, investors can potentially achieve more effective portfolio management. These alternative assets have been garnering interest from institutional investors as well. The Japanese Government Pension Investment Fund (GPIF), the world’s largest institutional investor, has been investing in alternative assets since 2014. To pursue yields, the GPIF has been expanding its investment portfolio in real assets like real estate and infrastructure.Easy investment with smartphonesTraditionally, retail investors encountered difficulties investing in large-scale real estate and infrastructure assets.
