BC Card Launches Innovative Card Payment NFT Service

South Korean credit card issuer BC Card announced Wednesday (local time) that it has launched a non-fungible token (NFT) issuance service linked to card payments — the first of its kind in the country — marking a significant step in the financial industry’s adoption of blockchain technology.

“The digital finance market is an area of technology and imagination, and it will continue to grow in various ways,” said BC Card Director Lee Sang-jun. “We are pioneering the industry by introducing payment-linked utility NFT services for the first time.”

 

Revolutionizing the use of NFTs

Typically, NFTs are primarily used to prove the uniqueness of digital assets based on their non-replicability, but the card issuer has now integrated them into card payments. This service offers customers proof of payments in the form of NFTs along with various other benefits.

BC Card has been preparing for the NFT market to pick up momentum since 2021. After rigorous internal testing, it first developed and opened its own NFT wallet dubbed “NFTbooc” on the private Ethereum network in April last year. Since then, the NFT wallet has been improved to be more user-friendly. Notably, it was integrated into BC Card’s financial platform PayBook in order to provide customers with a more convenient means to check their personal NFT holdings and participate in events.

The credit card company also issued limited edition NFTs through NFTbooc to celebrate the 40th anniversary of its foundation last year, making them available for both customers and employees. Even during the ongoing crypto winter, the company has continued efforts to integrate NFTs into customer services by facilitating NFT-based payments and emphasizing their technological value.

 

Boosting customer engagement

To celebrate the launch of the newest service, BC Card is also holding a special event for customers until December 31. Each participant will receive random missions, such as using their card within a specific time slot or at a specific store and engaging in a minimum number of transactions. Those who complete the challenges will be airdropped certificates of completion minted as NFTs after the event is closed with the chance to win cashback rewards of up to 100% of the amount of money that they spent during the challenge.

The card issuer plans to hold two additional events, which will be outlined on the PayBook and NFTbooc event pages.

The card company has also applied for three NFT-related patents this year, including one for issuing NFT receipts for secondhand transactions and asset certification NFTs that can be used to prove asset details in the event of a system failure at a given financial company.

Over the years, we have put a lot of love and passion into our brand and product.”She emphasized that this rebranding effort, beginning in Singapore, will extend to Europe and the United States in the coming months, ensuring consistency across key operational jurisdictions. Despite the name change, OKX maintains that customers can expect the same high-quality services within the same regulatory framework under the new brand. Providing the rationale for the change, Hong Fang went on to state:”We also believe it’s time for a change. It is special to us.”OKEx rebrandThis rebranding news comes approximately one year after OK Group initiated a similar transition with its subsidiary, formerly known as OKEx. In December 2022, OKEx transformed into “OKX,” expanding its scope beyond being a centralized crypto exchange. The move aimed to embrace DeFi, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and Web3. OKEx, founded by OK Group CEO Star Xu in 2017, had played a significant part in terms of innovation in the cryptocurrency space during that time.OK Group’s decision to rebrand its crypto ventures under the unified name “OKX” signifies a strategic shift toward creating a more cohesive and streamlined brand presence in the global crypto market. The transition stands out as yet another iteration in the development of global crypto platforms within an ever-changing crypto ecosystem. Since then, they have requested information about hundreds of accounts on Binance, suggesting that the scale of their actions has grown significantly since October 7.A statement from Israeli police last week outlined that they had frozen crypto accounts related to financing of Hamas. According to a report on Tuesday by the Financial Times (FT), the Israeli authorities have taken matters further still, having closed more than one hundred accounts on Binance.Scrutinizing 200 additional accountsSources cited by the FT as being close to the situation have revealed that these actions were initiated in response to Hamas’s assault on October 7. Authorities have also sought information on approximately 200 additional crypto accounts, with most of them being held on Binance. While Binance has acknowledged blocking a “small number” of accounts since the summer, it emphasized its adherence to internationally recognized sanctions rules and declined to provide further comment.Governments and regulators have long expressed concerns that terrorist organizations might exploit lightly regulated crypto markets for financial transactions. However, the recent attacks on Israel and the subsequent crypto-based fundraising campaigns by Hamas have made these concerns more pressing.Tom Alexandrovich, the Executive Director at the Israel National Cyber Directorate, stated that cryptocurrency has become a major tool for terror financing during these times of conflict. He noted that the amount of crypto funds involved has significantly increased since the start of the attack.Tether freezes accountsTether, the issuer of leading US dollar stablecoin USDT, announced on Monday that it had frozen 32 addresses containing more than $873,000 due to their alleged links to “terrorism and warfare” in Israel and Ukraine. The exact timing of when these accounts were blocked and the distribution of assets between Israel and Ukraine were not disclosed.Notably, US financial regulators previously alleged that money held on Binance had ties to Hamas. A lawsuit by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) in the United States in March claimed that senior Binance executives had knowledge of “Hamas transactions” in 2019. Binance has refuted these allegations and expressed its intent to contest the lawsuit.Commentators within the crypto space fear that opponents of the development of crypto, like US Senator Elizabeth Warren, will try to capitalize on this issue by using the opportunity to further draconian regulation.Over the past two years, Israeli authorities have seized millions of shekels from crypto accounts with suspected ties to Hamas and other militant groups in the Middle East. A recent analysis by Elliptic found that crypto wallets associated with various suspicious Middle East groups have interacted and relied on the same crypto exchange services to convert crypto into sovereign currencies.
