Founders Exit Following Overhaul of NFT Startup Rario

Web3 & Enterprise·September 09, 2023, 7:49 AM

Polygon-based NFT platform Rario, specializing in cricket-related non-fungible tokens (NFTs), is experiencing a major transformation, with its founders, CEO Ankit Wadhwa and CTO Sunny Bhanot, departing the company after a two-year tenure.

Investors in the startup are taking on a more prominent role in steering the direction of the Indian startup, according to a report from TechCrunch on Friday.

Dream11

Dream11, a prominent Mumbai-based fantasy sports platform and one of Rario’s primary backers, alongside other investors, is said to be exerting pressure to gain greater control, resulting in the ousting of the firm’s founders. The development comes amid other significant shifts in Dream11’s leadership.

Additionally, Rario is undergoing a broader restructuring effort that includes the elimination of various roles, according to sources who were cited by TechCrunch as being familiar with the matter.

This recent upheaval coincides with reports of Dream11’s parent company, Dream Sports, taking measures to reduce operational costs. TechCrunch noted that Dream Sports is actively renegotiating several licensing agreements previously inked by Rario as part of cost-cutting measures.

High profile investors

Rario boasts a roster of high-profile investors, including global investment company Alpha Wave Global and cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar. In April 2022, the cricket NFT platform made waves by securing $120 million in a Series A funding round, asserting its dominance in the cricket NFT rights arena with over 900 cricketers on board at that time. It’s not clear what valuation the firm had at the time of the Series A funding round but in a prior round, Rario had been valued at $250 million.

Founded in 2021, Rario set out with a mission to create digital cricket collectibles and foster an online community for passionate fans. By April 2021, the company had successfully sold 50,000 NFTs to sports enthusiasts spanning 20 countries.

Cricket world partnerships

Cricket is the second largest sport in the world with in excess of 1.5 billion fans worldwide. That leaves a lot of scope for Rario to harness NFTs to bring about new forms of engagement.

Among Rario’s notable partnerships are agreements with cricket leagues such as Cricket Australia, the Australian Cricketers’ Association, the Caribbean Premier League, the Lanka Premier League, and the Abu Dhabi T10 League Legends League Cricket.

Polygon changes

Polygon Labs, the developer of the Ethereum-centric layer two scaling network upon which the Rario platform runs, also features India in its origin story. It too has seen upheaval at a managerial level recently. In July, the firm announced a number of senior positional changes. Its former Chief Legal Officer (CLO) was elevated to the position of CEO. Those changes saw Polygon Labs’ Indian Co-Founder Sandeep Naiwal transition to the role of Executive Chairman.

Rario’s ongoing evolution reflects the dynamic nature of the NFT space, where startups must adapt to changing investor interests and market conditions. With its investors taking the reins, Rario faces a pivotal juncture in its journey to redefine how cricket fans engage with the sport through the exciting world of NFTs.

Through that communication, FOMO Pay revealed that this collaboration with Notabene will be a key contributor towards the firm’s efforts to elevate its know-your-transaction (KYT) capabilities, ensuring access to accurate and verified business information.A focal point of this partnership lies in amplifying FOMO Pay’s compliance measures, bolstering customer security, and cultivating a foundation of trust in the domains of digital payments and digital assets.Wee Teck Lim, the Head of Compliance at FOMO Pay, emphasized that this partnership mirrors the company’s efforts towards full compliance with global regulations, enhancing anti-money laundering (AML) strategies and decision-making.Responding to regulatory pressureWith a regulatory spotlight on crypto and crypto-related businesses over the past year, market participants are making greater efforts to adhere to national and global compliance rules and guidelines. This move by FOMO Pay not only aids it in adhering to rigorous guidelines but also reinforces the battle against money laundering, terrorism financing, and other such concerns.Pelle Braendgaard, CEO of Notabene, articulated the symbiotic significance of this partnership. He noted that this collaboration stands as a tangible testament to the efficacy of the travel rule implementation, effectively fostering secure and streamlined digital asset transactions. This alignment of missions between FOMO Pay and Notabene, Braendgaard maintains, resonates with their shared aspiration to establish a digital asset ecosystem that is safer and more accessible.FOMO CryptoFOMO Pay, which has been licensed as a payment institution by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), boasts an array of products including FOMO Payment, FOMO iBank, and FOMO Crypto. Through FOMO Crypto, the firm is actively constructing Asia’s inaugural licensed gateway, which will offer a seamless connection between fiat and digital currencies.Notabene is headquartered in New York although it casts its operational net across several countries. The platform claims to empower real-time decision-making, while offering sanctions screening for counterparties and self-hosted wallet identification, all with a view towards enabling digital transactions.Partnership focusIn bootstrapping the business, it appears that FOMO Pay has been relying heavily on engaging in industry partnerships. Moving away from traditional payment rails towards Ripple’s ODL product meant that FOMO Pay could free up working capital and optimize business cash flow.As further evidence of FOMO Pay’s efforts to maintain regulatory compliance, in July the company partnered with Elliptic, a crypto asset risk management firm, in an effort to enhance its customer onboarding due diligence check process.

Sony Singapore partners with Crypto.com to enable USDC payments

Sony Electronics Singapore has partnered with Singapore-headquartered Crypto.com to enable USDC stablecoin payments for local consumers on Sony’s online store. In a statement published on April 2, Crypto.com provided details on the development. By accessing Crypto.com’s payment system, Sony customers in Singapore can pay for items on the Sony platform using the U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoin.Photo by Alwin Thomas on UnsplashPlans to expand payment optionsThe gaming, entertainment and consumer electronics giant also outlined that USDC payments are a starting point, with plans to expand the offering to include other crypto payment options in the future. Commenting on the development, Crypto.com’s General Manager for Singapore, Chin Tah Ang, stated: “We’re pushing to make paying in crypto more mainstream and partnering with a well-established and forward-thinking brand like Sony Electronics Singapore further raises awareness of how simple it can be to pay for everyday goods and services using crypto.” The Crypto.com executive added that a high-profile brand like Sony would provide further visibility with regard to crypto payments. Sony dominates the gaming console market in Singapore, with a 61% share of the market within the city-state. A successful roll-out of this crypto payment option in Singapore could potentially lead to further roll-outs in other regions. Keeping pace with shift towards cryptoBlockchain industry pioneer Kyle Chasse, outlined on X that the development demonstrates that adoption isn’t coming, rather that it has already arrived. Sony sees the move as an effort the firm is making to “stay ahead of the curve” and future-proof its operations. It has formed the view that diversifying payment options to include crypto payments is necessary in order to keep pace with what it perceives as a global shift towards the use and integration of crypto.  Ang sees upside for both companies as a consequence of the development. He stated: “This payment integration will not only benefit our users by giving them another way to utilise their crypto in the real world, but we believe adding a new and streamlined crypto payment method will also broaden [Sony Electronics Singapore’s] customer base.”  This development is not Sony’s first touchpoint with crypto and blockchain. In recent times, it has developed its own blockchain, Soneium. The Ethereum layer-2 network officially launched its mainnet in January. In 2024, Sony Group acquired Amber Japan, the Japanese subsidiary of Singaporean crypto market maker Amber Group. Last year, another Sony Group company, Sony Bank, announced plans to develop a stablecoin in partnership with Astar Network, a Polkadot-based smart contract platform.  Commenting on Sony’s participation within the crypto and blockchain space last year, independent game designer Chad Steingraber said, “Sony entering crypto is a MUCH bigger deal than people realize yet.” He predicted that the entire entertainment sector will become engulfed by crypto assets.  At the time, Steingraber was reacting to the news that Singaporean financial services firm Phillip Securities and Securitize were planning a security token offering in connection with a Sony movie production.
