Indian Crypto Exchange CoinDCX Implements Workforce Reduction

Indian cryptocurrency exchange CoinDCX has recently taken the step of reducing its workforce by approximately 12%.

The strategic move was announced by way of a statement from CoinDCX founders Sumit Gupta and Neeraj Khandelwal, published to the firm’s website on Tuesday. The cutback is being made in response to the prolonged bear market and the consequences of India’s Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) policy on domestic exchanges.

Macroeconomic and crypto market headwinds

Gupta and Khandelwal described the decision that they’ve taken as being challenging, although they outlined that it was taken with a view toward steering the business to profitability and sustainability amidst trying macroeconomic conditions in the crypto sector.

The company has encountered significant headwinds due to the overall tough conditions in the crypto market. These challenges have resulted in decreased trading volumes and revenues for CoinDCX. In light of these circumstances, the company has determined that resizing specific teams within the organization is necessary in order to secure the viability and long-term growth of the operation.

 

71 jobs cut

Approximately 71 employees are being affected by the workforce reduction, out of CoinDCX’s total workforce of around 590 based in Mumbai. To mitigate the impact on these employees, the company has implemented a support package aimed at providing comprehensive assistance during this transition.

This package includes severance pay equivalent to the full notice period, an extra month of salary, compensation for variable pay and incentives, encashment of unused leave days, extension of health insurance and wellness benefits, and access to counseling support.

In spite of the necessity for workforce reduction, CoinDCX’s outlook on the Indian market remains optimistic. The company remains steadfast in its commitment to driving crypto and Web3 adoption to a target of 50 million individuals by 2025.

 

No further reduction plans

The founders emphasized that this reduction is a unique, targeted action and that they have no further plans for team reductions. They claim to have engaged in thorough discussions with senior leaders within the company to ascertain the best path forward, with a commitment to overcoming challenges and reinforcing the company’s foundation.

In spite of this setback CoinDCX maintains that its vision is intact, encompassing a presence not only in the Indian market but also further afield.

 

Industry trend

CoinDCX’s current struggle has been mirrored by a plethora of leading crypto exchanges over the course of recent months. In July, it emerged that Seychelles-based Kucoin was cutting jobs although the firm’s CEO asserted that it wasn’t a layoff plan and more so a reevaluation of the organization’s structure.

Earlier that month, Thai digital asset exchange Bitkub cut its headcount in an effort to manage costs during this period of challenging market conditions. Recently, leading global crypto exchange Binance announced one thousand job losses while stating that more jobs may be cut in the future.

The decision made by CoinDCX underscores the broader struggles that startups and businesses within the crypto space face. With the bear market’s impact and regulatory pressures, companies are being compelled to make difficult choices in pursuit of long-term sustainability.

The token has gained enough traction to spur the emergence of dedicated apps that facilitate these peer-to-peer trades, charging fees for their services. Based on the size of the chat rooms and apps involved, it is estimated that approximately 3,000 participants are trading the token, according to a report by local news website Etoday.As per another coverage by the same outlet, the Virtual Asset Inspection Division of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), which operates under the FSC, has inquired with local crypto exchanges on two occasions — once in September and again this week — about whether they have listed or are planning to list the BTCMobick token. It’s rare for the financial authority to specifically target a particular token when making inquiries with crypto trading platforms.Potential price manipulationAn FIU official explained the rationale behind the agency’s inquiry into crypto exchanges. The official stated that the probe aimed to caution the exchanges about potential price manipulation of the BTCMobick token. The concern is that many crypto users might suffer losses if such a token, which has been experiencing a continual rise in price outside of trading platforms, were to be listed. Currently, legal penalties for cryptocurrency price manipulation fall under the Virtual Asset User Protection Act, which will not be enforced until July 2024. This indicates a regulatory gap in the immediate term.Hwang Suk-jin, a professor at Dongguk University’s Graduate School of International Affairs and Information Security, pointed out that while giving out privately generated tokens to friends or acquaintances doesn’t raise any legal issues, the situation changes once these tokens are listed for trading on exchanges and distributed more broadly in the market. In such scenarios, these tokens can become a source of legal disputes, he explained.Amidst these developments, there are circulating rumors suggesting that BTCMobick is on the verge of being listed on exchanges. An industry insider has mentioned that there are brokers actively spreading these rumors, indicating that the token might soon become publicly tradable.Oh Tae-min’s denial of rumorsMeanwhile, Oh Tae-min, the creator of BTCMobick who has been distributing his token for free, states that the token is part of an experiment intended to mimic the early stages of Bitcoin. However, critics are concerned that the personally issued token has no practical utility. Addressing the circulating rumors about the token’s potential listing on exchanges, Oh asserts that these rumors are baseless and false. He further warns that any brokers spreading such rumors are likely engaging in fraudulent activities.

Bithumb and NH Bank renew their real-name account contract for just six months

About three years ago, in March 2021, the South Korean financial regulators implemented the Specific Financial Transaction Information Act to ensure that local cryptocurrency exchanges provide safe and sound crypto trading services to investors. It was also a move to prevent exchanges and investors from engaging in illicit money laundering practices.  However, the law has come across as a hassle to many crypto exchanges, as they were required to undergo verification processes to prove their reliability and to receive real-name accounts from banks. These accounts enable their users to trade crypto against the Korean won, helping exchanges stand out in the fiercely competitive crypto market amid surging Bitcoin prices. At the moment, only five crypto exchanges in Korea are qualified to provide such services. Bithumb, one of these few qualified fiat-to-crypto exchanges, has renewed its real-name account contract with NH Nonghyup Bank (NH Bank) for six more months, according to local news media Yonhap News Agency. Photo by Robin Jonathan Deutsch on UnsplashVarious factors in play for relatively short renewalCrypto insiders say that extending the contract for only six months appears to be quite a conservative move, as Bithumb has been making a year-long contract with NH Bank every year since 2018. Experts suggest various factors may have influenced Bithumb's decision, including the volatile crypto market, the Virtual Asset User Protection Act becoming effective in July and the exchange's planned initial public offering (IPO).  Some say the relatively short renewal of the contract comes after a flurry of complaints from Bithumb users about the unfavorable user experience, including the cumbersome process they must go through to increase the deposit limit of their real-name accounts linked to Bithumb. This appeared to have prompted Bithumb to feel reluctant about the 6-year-long collaboration and seek a partnership with another bank such as KB Kookmin Bank or the online-only Kakao Bank, according to local media Bizwatch. One bank official said that the relatively short renewal reflects Bithumb and NH Bank's commitment to addressing the inefficiencies of crypto transaction services, as the two companies plan to enhance their investor experience and marketing efforts over the next six months.  Crypto boom drives partnership between exchanges and banks NH Bank appears to be persuading Bithumb to maintain their partnership, one bank official said, because providing real-name accounts to crypto exchanges not only benefits exchanges but also banks. Having young crypto investors – mostly in their 20s to 40s – open real-name accounts at banks is seen as a significant opportunity to expand their customer base. One crypto insider said the ability to issue real-name accounts usually puts banks in a superior position when entering a partnership with crypto exchanges, but that doesn't seem to be the case in times like this when the crypto market is bullish more than ever.
