$500 million valuation

The funding round, led by Polychain Capital and Shanghai-headquartered Qiming Venture Partners, has resulted in a valuation of $500 million for p0x Labs, according to a blog post published by the project on Wednesday. This equity-based investment demonstrates a growing interest in not only the project’s token but also the team behind it.

Manta Network aims to leverage zero-knowledge (ZK) technology to address the scalability challenges and privacy concerns prevalent on the Ethereum network. By harnessing zero-knowledge proofs, Manta enables users to verify the authenticity of information without disclosing the underlying data.

This approach provides individuals with complete control over their identities while mitigating the risks of surveillance. Consequently, Manta Network is seeking to attract users who have reservations about utilizing DeFi protocols due to the transparent nature of transactions on public blockchain networks.

At the recent EthCC event held in Paris, the project unveiled the testnet for its Layer 2 network, known as Manta Pacific. This testnet operates in an environment with low gas fees, fostering cost-effective transactions for users. Manta Pacific is designed to complement the existing Layer 1 solution, Manta Atlantic, which focuses on achieving compliant on-chain privacy.

VC support

Luke Pearson, an investor at Polychain Capital, expressed his enthusiasm for Manta Network’s expansion within the Ethereum ecosystem and confirmed Polychain’s continued support through this Series A funding round. Meanwhile, Yi Tang, Principal at Qiming Venture Partners, believes that their contribution will not only help Manta Network penetrate the Asian market but also attract the attention of Web2 brands.

With the additional funding, p0x Labs aims to establish a global presence for Manta Network. Kenny Li, a core contributor at Manta Network, emphasized the significance of partnering with one of China’s largest investors to gain a stronger foothold in Asia, particularly China. The team is enthusiastic about the opportunities this collaboration will bring.

Industry partnerships

Manta Network has already witnessed substantial demand for its offerings, with partnerships with projects such as Arbitrum and Linea resulting in the creation of over 300,000 zero-knowledge soulbound tokens. These tokens enable the verification of on-chain identities without compromising data confidentiality. Additionally, the native Manta Wallet has garnered more than 200,000 installations, and innovative features like email-based notifications have contributed to a collective user base exceeding 1.5 million users.

Looking ahead, the newly launched testnet with its plug-and-play functionality is expected to streamline the development process for Manta Network’s ecosystem. Developers will be able to allocate their time and resources more efficiently toward building their core products, driving innovation within the zero-knowledge space.

The successful funding round and the launch of the Layer 2 testnet mark significant milestones for Manta Network and p0x Labs. With continued support from prominent investors, Manta Network appears to be setting itself up to unlock the true potential of zero-knowledge technology and drive adoption across various industries.

Gemini receives in-principle MPI license approval in Singapore

American crypto exchange and custodian Gemini announced via its blog on Oct. 29 that it has been awarded in-principle approval for a Major Payment Institution (MPI) license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). In an X post on Oct. 23, Dan Clarke, who worked for Gemini in Singapore in an International Marketing & Operations role in 2021, outlined that back then the company ran the first crypto-related full page ad in the Straits Times with the slogan “We’re in Singapore. For Good.” Fast forward three years and it appears that Gemini is making good on that commitment through this latest regulatory-compliant milestone.Photo by Swapnil Bapat on UnsplashSingapore to play a crucial roleThe MPI license will enable Gemini to offer digital payment tokens and cross-border money transfer services in Singapore. Gemini’s Asia-Pacific (APAC) business is headed up by Saad Ahmed. Ahmed commented that Singapore has been at “the heart” of its operational expansion within the APAC region. Expanding on that further, he stated:“While the United States remains our largest market and global headquarters, Asia and Singapore in particular play a crucial role in our global strategy.”  Ahmed outlined that Singapore represents the company’s second-largest market, with plans to double its current Singaporean workforce and move to a larger office space. The Gemini executive believes that this in-principle licensing approval takes the company one step closer to offering services that cater to the needs of residents of the city-state.  Serving users across the APAC regionIn its blog announcement, the firm said that “since establishing our regional headquarters in Singapore, we’ve focused on expanding our footprint, ensuring that we bring a localized, secure, and compliant trading experience to users across the region.” With the regulatory environment in its home market being currently hostile to crypto, Gemini has pursued a strategy followed by many of its peers in looking for growth opportunities overseas instead. In April of last year, the company announced that it was in the process of opening an engineering center in India.  In June 2023 the company publicized its intention to pursue a crypto trading license within the United Arab Emirates (UAE). At the time the company’s co-CEOs, Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, referred to the “hostility and lack of clarity” when it came to the regulatory environment within the United States. Regulatory clarity to drive growthAhmed believes that regulatory clarity in Singapore will be a driver of growth, leading to greater adoption across the region. With regard to the U.S., he has the expectation that the crypto industry will grow regardless of whether former U.S. President Donald Trump or Vice President Kamala Harris wins the upcoming presidential election.  Notwithstanding that, Gemini’s Winklevoss twins have donated over $2 million to Trump’s campaign, while also contributing funds to a super political action committee (PAC) supporting John Deaton, a Republican challenger to the Senate seat of fierce crypto critic Senator Elizabeth Warren.  Regulatory conditions in Canada have proven to be too much to handle for the company. At the end of September, Gemini announced that it would close all customer accounts in Canada by December 31 as a direct consequence of new regulations which have been introduced by the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA).

Asian fund acquires majority stake in The Block

Asian fund acquires majority stake in The BlockIn the wake of certain difficulties experienced following the FTX collapse, prominent crypto publication The Block has secured its future through a strategic sale to Singapore-based venture capital group Foresight Ventures.Taking to the X platform on Monday, The Block’s CEO Larry Cermak announced the acquisition, with Foresight Ventures taking a majority stake in the publication. The deal results in a valuation of the US media group at $70 million. Cermak stated:”This [transaction] gives The Block a fresh start ahead of the bull market and provides us with more capital to build out new exciting products and expand our footprint into Asia and the Middle East.”Cermak also thanked New York-based investment bank Moelis & Company for its help in running the process.Photo by Kelly Sikkema on UnsplashFTX controversyThe sale should allow the firm to move on from a difficult situation which saw it implicated in the activities of convicted fraudster and former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF). The fallout from the collapse of the FTX exchange in November of last year included the revelation that The Block had relied on undisclosed loans from SBF to sustain its operations.Michael McCaffrey, the former CEO of The Block, resigned last December after it was disclosed that he had borrowed $43 million from SBF’s Alameda Research, a crypto trading company. This financial arrangement was allegedly aimed at supporting the media company and facilitating property acquisitions.Following the conviction of SBF on charges of fraud and money laundering in New York earlier this month, The Block faced challenges and turned its focus towards building a more robust institutional customer base. The media group has been actively engaged in compiling industry deals and offering subscription-based news services.McCaffrey had taken loans totaling $27 million to buy out shareholders and support the media group, with an additional $16 million used for property acquisition in the Bahamas. The financial arrangement with Alameda was undisclosed to the broader team at The Block, as revealed by Bobby Moran, the company’s chief revenue officer at the time. It’s still unclear if McCaffrey has repaid these loans to the FTX Debtor that is currently managing the FTX business. FTX filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in November 2022 and with that, it is in the process of being restructured.$56 million investmentAs part of the deal, Foresight Ventures will invest $56 million, securing an 80 percent stake in The Block, according to a source cited by the Financial Times (FT). The investment is a strategic move, especially considering the recent slowdown in venture capital investment in the crypto market. While investors injected approximately $30 billion into crypto projects in both 2021 and 2022, the figure plummeted to $7 billion by the end of September of this year, according to PitchBook.Foresight Ventures CEO Forest Bai confirmed to the FT that The Block will continue to operate as an independent business. Bai stated: “We think The Block is one of the crown assets in the crypto media space. Our view is that the media aspect will continue to drive education and adoption in the space.”
