Regional Chinese City Enables e-CNY Bus Fare Payments

Policy & Regulation·July 04, 2023, 11:52 PM

It appears with every passing week, there’s a new initiative in China to bring about greater everyday use of the digital yuan. Recent days have not disappointed with the news that Jinan, the capital of China’s Shandong Province, is introducing digital yuan payments throughout its entire bus network.

The city initially conducted a pilot phase by testing central bank digital currency (CBDC) payments on two bus lines. After a successful trial period, Jinan has now implemented the new payment method across all its bus routes. According to a recent report by local media outlet Shunwang-Jinan Daily, the city has updated its card readers and bus route software to facilitate digital yuan transactions for passengers.

Discounted fares

To encourage the use of the digital yuan, Jinan is offering fare discounts to passengers who opt for CBDC payments. The announcement stated that individuals could enjoy up to two discounted rides per day and a maximum of six discounted rides per month if they choose to pay with the digital yuan.

The fare discounts offered for digital yuan payments serve as an incentive for passengers to adopt the new payment method. By enjoying discounted rides, individuals are encouraged to explore the benefits and convenience of using the digital yuan, further driving its adoption in everyday transactions.

The acceptance of CBDC payments for bus rides in Jinan represents a significant step towards the integration of digital currencies into everyday transactions. As China continues to expand the use cases for the digital yuan, it is likely to pave the way for further adoption and exploration of CBDCs globally.

Broader adoption strategy

This move aligns with the broader initiative in China to promote the adoption of the digital yuan. In April, the city of Changshu announced that it would begin paying civil servant salaries with the CBDC, including personnel at all levels of public service, public institutions, and state-owned units, starting from May.

Furthermore, China has implemented its CBDC for various purposes, such as the Belt and Road initiative and cross-border trades. In Xuzhou, a city serving as a departure point for trains transporting goods to Europe, a plan was issued in April to promote the use of the CBDC in cross-border trade.

Last month, e-CNY ATMs were introduced in the resort city of Sanya to enable foreign visitors to purchase the CBDC. In May, regional authorities in Jiangsu Province set about establishing use of the digital yuan within the region’s education system.

On an international level, French bank BNP Paribas has partnered with the Bank of China (BOC) to facilitate the adoption of the digital yuan. This collaboration enables BNP Paribas’ corporate clients to connect with BOC’s system, allowing for real-time transactions using the digital yuan. The partnership advances China’s desire to bring the cross-border trade capabilities of the e-CNY into play on an international basis.

As China continues to lead the way in CBDC implementation and explores new use cases, the digital yuan’s influence is expected to extend globally, transforming how we transact and interact with currencies in the digital age.

DLD partners with regulator in Dubai to integrate tokenized property

The Dubai Land Department (DLD), a government agency responsible for the registration of real estate in Dubai and the promotion of real estate investments, has signed an agreement with the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA), a local regulator, to better integrate tokenized real estate within existing systems. In a statement published on the DLD website on April 6, the government agency set out further details on the collaboration. The purpose of the agreement is to better accommodate fractional ownership of Dubai real estate through tokenization. Photo by Precondo CA on UnsplashLinking fractional ownership to DLD registryTo that end, a governance system will be put in place in order to link the DLD’s land and property registry with tokenized, fractional ownership of property. The parties believe that this approach will lead to greater operational efficiency for stakeholders such as property management firms. Furthermore, greater accommodation of tokenized ownership will lead to enhanced liquidity within the Dubai real estate market.  As a consequence of this improved liquidity and facilitating a more seamless approach in terms of operational efficiency for property management firms, it’s believed that a greater share of global investment in local real estate can be achieved. Broadening the investor baseFractional ownership via tokenized real estate opens the market up to a broader range of potential investors. On this basis, the collaboration can play a role in contributing towards the objectives of Dubai’s Real Estate Strategy 2033, which sets out to boost the local property sector’s contribution towards gross domestic product (GDP). That initiative targets a real estate market value of AED 1 trillion ($272 billion). The DLD said that the initiative also feeds into the broader objectives of the Dubai Economic Agenda (D33), a ten-year plan that has been set out to double Dubai’s economy by 2033, through focusing on innovation, achieving competitiveness at a global level and sustainable growth. Helal Almari, the director general of Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism, commented on the partnership, stating that it reflects the future-focused innovation, which he claims Dubai has already become associated with. He added: “Real Estate and Virtual Assets are key pillars of the D33 Economic Agenda D33 and by joining forces DLD and VARA will be creating the blueprint for RE 2.0 in a Decentralised Future Economy.” Almari expressed the belief that putting legal safeguards in place to recognize fractional ownership rights where real estate is concerned will facilitate “more inclusive economic participation” in this market sector.  The DLD recently launched a real estate tokenization pilot project in collaboration with VARA and the Dubai Future Foundation (DFF). At that time, DLD Director General Marwan Ahmed Bin Ghalita recognized the potential that tokenization can bring to the real estate sector. He stated: “By converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology, tokenization simplifies and enhances buying, selling, and investment processes.”Last month, Scott Thiel, founder and CEO of Dubai-based real-world asset (RWA) token marketplace Tokinvest, outlined that RWA asset tokenization in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is gaining momentum. Commenting on this latest development, Thiel said that it’s a demonstration that “the future of real estate investment is onchain.”

OKX Burns $244M $OKB in Record Exchange Token Supply Cut

OKX Burns $244M $OKB in Record Exchange Token Supply CutSeychelles-headquartered OKX, the world’s second largest cryptocurrency exchange, has conducted its largest-ever burn of its exchange token, $OKB, according to on-chain data.Approximately 5.5 million OKB tokens, equivalent to around $244 million, were removed from circulation. This record-breaking burn represents a significant milestone for OKX, surpassing the previous burns conducted since the monthly program’s inception. The burn was valued at approximately $258 million when calculated based on a 90-day average price, as reported by OKX. Chinese reporter Colin Wu highlighted that this burn marked another significant milestone in terms of the value of OKB tokens burned.Taking to Twitter on Thursday, Wu wrote: “The OKX exchange carried out the 20th OKB repurchase and burning on June 8, with a total of about 5.5 million OKB, or about 244 million US dollars, which once again set a new record for the value of OKB burning. OKX previously stated that it will burn OKX according to the seasonal market and operating performance, but has not disclosed the specific rules.”Photo by Jens Mahnke on PexelsBuy-Back & Burn program$OKB is described by OKX as a “global utility token issued by the OKX Blockchain Foundation,” offering holders various benefits such as discounts and exclusive access. The global exchange initiated the first Buy-Back & Burn program in May 2019. Since then, it has burned a total of 64,042,314.70 tokens as part of that ongoing burning process. Despite this significant development, the price of OKB has remained relatively stable, experiencing a slight increase of 0.29% on OKX. At the time of publication, the token was trading at a unit price of $44.97.Exchange token concernExchange tokens have recently garnered attention following the United States Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) lawsuit against global crypto exchange Binance. The SEC has levied charges related to the sale of unregistered securities, resulting in a steep decline of nearly 15% in the value of Binance’s exchange token, BNB, over the past week. That scrutiny is likely to have followed the collapse of Bahamas-based cryptocurrency exchange FTX in November. At that time, it became apparent that the exchange was using its exchange token, $FTT, to prop up the business. FTX had issued $FTT tokens and used them as collateral, a dangerous act given that exchange tokens have no real-world asset backing and limited token utility. As the crypto market continues to face regulatory scrutiny and legal challenges, the burn of $OKB by OKX stands as a noteworthy event within the industry. The burn not only reduces the supply of $OKB tokens but also underscores OKX’s commitment to managing and enhancing the value of its exchange token. Market participants will undoubtedly monitor the implications of this burn and how it may influence OKB’s future performance in the evolving cryptocurrency landscape.Exchanges like OKX are likely to carefully manage the supply levels of exchange tokens, given market perceptions in relation to the extent of the utility of such tokens, the scrutiny of regulators, and the problems caused in over-extending supply in the case of other exchanges in the past.
