ETH surge being led by Asian market

Markets·July 18, 2025, 6:34 AM

Over the course of the past two weeks, the unit price of Ethereum (ETH) has surged 32%, with a report from a Singapore-based crypto financial services firm asserting that the Asian market has had a large part to play in that increase.

Taking to X on July 16, Matrixport, a crypto financial services platform, provided its daily analysis in which it suggested that “Ethereum’s recent outperformance appears to be heavily influenced by Asia.”

Asian market influence

The company included a graph in which it had plotted Ethereum’s recent performance during Asian trading hours, asserting that as much as 17% of the uptick in the Ether unit price can be accounted for by the actions of market participants within the Asian market. It added:

"The influence of the Asian market in the pricing of crypto assets is continuing to rise, whether in terms of volatility or trading momentum.”

ETH ETFs in Hong Kong

Spot ETH exchange-traded funds (ETFs) were approved in Hong Kong in April 2024. Hong Kong ETH ETF volumes have risen substantially in July, with significant inflows being recorded related to both retail and institutional investors.

In the past, many commentators have suggested that the addition of staking would be an attractive prospect for institutional investors who like the idea of accumulating an ongoing yield. With that, Asian investors may be enticed to delve further into Ethereum positions going forward, given that ETF issuers are trying to add that component to their offerings. Huaxia Fund, a subsidiary of China Asset Management (ChinaAMC), is preparing to launch staking as part of its ETH ETF.

Another potential driver for ETH in Asia in the future lies with the ongoing enablement of trading via established institutions. Earlier this week, China Merchants Bank’s brokerage arm received a virtual asset license in Hong Kong to trade crypto assets. It’s the first mainland China-affiliated brokerage to be awarded such a license, with licensing enabling it to offer trading services related to assets like Ether.

Global asset

While Asia is playing a role in ETH’s recent move upwards, the asset is traded globally and with that, factors further afield are also playing a role. Tom Lee, founder of American financial research firm Fundstrat, pointed out on X that ETH had been range-bound since 2021. However, he believes that the rise of stablecoins, which by and large run on Ethereum, together with ongoing growth in the tokenization of real-world assets (RWAs), is driving demand for the digital asset.

While Bitcoin treasury companies have played a significant part in driving Bitcoin in recent months, Ethereum is starting to see similar activity. Lee made the point that Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) “set the standard for Treasuries,” but that now BitMine “wants to be the Microstrategy of Ethereum.” The crypto mining and treasury firm confirmed on July 17 that it now holds $1 billion worth of Ethereum.

Arthur Hayes, co-founder of BitMEX and chief investment officer (CIO) at Hong Kong family office, Maelstrom, said that it was “ETH szn” and that the Maelstrom Fund is buying the digital asset. Tom Dunleavy, head of venture at Varys Capital, asserts that ETH will hit a unit price of $10,000 by the end of 2026.

Asia Web3 Alliance Japan seeks collaboration with U.S. SEC

The Asia Web3 Alliance Japan, an agency that regards itself as a bridge between the Web3 ecosystem in Asia and Japan’s broader business sector, has reached out to the Securities and Exchange Commission in the United States with a view towards establishing a strategic collaboration.Photo by Clement Souchet on UnsplashFocus on Web3 regulatory innovation & tokenizationThe President of the organization, Hinza Asif, wrote to SEC Crypto Task Force Chairperson and SEC Commissioner, Hester Peirce, on the subject, on March 25. The letter, subsequently published by the SEC, sets out a proposal that centers on a strategic U.S.-Japan partnership relative to Web3 regulatory innovation and tokenization. The Japanese agency, which has set out cross-border synergy as one of its objectives, calls for collaboration between Japan’s Financial Services Agency, the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Bank of Japan with the U.S. regulator. The Alliance proposes that the goal of that partnership would be the establishment of regulatory clarity in respect of the Web3 sector, together with the fostering of interoperability between a developing Web3 ecosystem in the U.S. and the one that’s developing in Japan. Token classification frameworkDelving deeper into proposal specifics, Asif sets out the formation of a harmonized token classification framework as a key objective. The proposal suggests that a distinction needs to be made between tokenized securities, utility tokens and non-security digital assets.  The alliance believes that right now, token classification is unclear, with projects struggling to understand what category their token falls within from a regulatory perspective. There’s a lack of token offering frameworks. While it sees that further work is required, the Asia Web3 Alliance Japan is encouraged by progress made by the SEC’s Crypto Task Force in identifying security categories. With this cross-border collaboration, the Japanese crypto advocacy group believes that there is an opportunity to achieve regulatory interoperability on an international basis. That would facilitate compliant cross-border token issuance. On that basis, the alliance suggests that standards be developed such that regulatory consistency is achieved internationally when it comes to items such as digital asset trading, custody and token issuance. The proposal sets out a need for reciprocal disclosure requirements between the two jurisdictions where cross-border token issuance is concerned. It advocates for mutual recognition of what it terms “compliant tokenized offerings.” Bringing safe harbor to JapanAnother focus area contained within the proposal is the suggestion of a need to implement a safe harbor approach in Japan for early-stage token projects in line with what has been put forward in the U.S. Peirce first put forward a token safe harbor proposal in the U.S. in 2020. It sets out to provide exemptions over a defined initial period for certain token issuances. The idea behind it is to enable these early-stage projects to innovate and mature without getting bogged down in a regulatory quagmire. The establishment of a U.S.-Japan Web3 regulatory roundtable is another strand contained within the proposal. This would provide a mechanism for ongoing dialogue between stakeholders such as regulators, industry leaders and legal experts.

Cronos Labs launches zkEVM chain testnet

Cronos Labs launches zkEVM chain testnetCronos Labs, the developer behind the Cronos blockchain ecosystem, is charting a new path in the blockchain space by launching a zkEVM chain. From Cosmos to EthereumThe Cronos zkEVM chain is being launched in the first instance as a test network. The layer-2 blockchain will rely upon ZK Stack, the software kit developed by Matter Labs. In this way, the project will be extending its scaling roadmap from Cosmos to Ethereum. As Matter Lab’s SVP of Business and Operations, Marco Cora put it:“When we introduced the ZK Stack, we opened up the door for anyone wanting to build on top of Ethereum to do so by deploying hyperchains. Whether you’re building a specialized Rollup or a general purpose one, hyperchains allow you to tap into Ethereum’s extensive userbase base and liquidity while preserving its robust security and decentralization.”The journey began with the creation of the first chain in the Cronos ecosystem — a Cosmos appchain developed in collaboration with Singapore-headquartered crypto platform Crypto.com and launched in 2021. Subsequently, Cronos introduced an EVM-compatible chain in 2022, built using the Cosmos SDK. Notably, these new endeavors complement, rather than replace, the earlier established chains.Photo by Kanchanara on UnsplashThe product of collaborative effortsA significant development in Cronos’ evolution is the introduction of zkEVM, a result of collaborative efforts involving Cronos Labs, Matter Labs and engineering teams from stakeholders Crypto.com and existing dApp developers. The zkEVM testnet is a breakthrough, utilizing Ethereum’s Sepolia testnet and incorporating zkSync’s open-source prover, Boojum — a STARK-based zero-knowledge proof system known for its efficiency in the layer-2 rollup space, with low hardware requirements and fees. The decision to launch a native Ethereum chain stemmed from challenges in bridging EVM chains and bridging between Cosmos and Ethereum, according to Ken Timsit, Managing Director at Cronos. Timsit emphasized the richness and robustness of the Ethereum developer ecosystem for building DeFi and NFT applications.Native account abstractionHyperchains within the ZK Stack share components, including a native bridge to the Ethereum mainnet and zkSync’s trustless bridging mechanism, ensuring assets remain secured by Ethereum. The implementation of zkSync’s native account abstraction allows transaction fee payments in various cryptocurrencies, including Cronos’ native token (CRO).Cronos’ zkEVM is anticipated to progress to the mainnet in the second quarter of 2024, marking a pivotal moment in the evolution of hyperchains. The landscape of hyperchains is expanding, with projects like GRVT and Tradable utilizing the ZK Stack. GRVT, a derivatives exchange, and Tradable, a tech firm focused on bringing private credit on-chain, exemplify the diversity and specialization within this emerging sector. Tradable aims to establish an institutional-focused hyperchain, potentially forming a decentralized chain alongside other institutional partners.Matter Labs views the zkSync hyperchain as a superior option compared to app-specific chains in Cosmos, emphasizing the scalability and security benefits. Hyperchains, a potential alternative to private blockchain frameworks like Hyperledger or Corda, offer technical scalability with the benefits of Ethereum. However, practical scalability remains a challenge due to cost considerations and the social coordination problem.

Korean Crypto Market Outpaces Stock Exchange Amid Bitcoin ETF Optimism

Korean Crypto Market Outpaces Stock Exchange Amid Bitcoin ETF OptimismThe anticipation is building around the potential approval of BlackRock’s Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) in the United States. As the world’s largest asset manager is anticipated to obtain a green light, Bitcoin’s price has surged by more than 17% just this week, capturing the keen interest of investors.Photo by Kanchanara on UnsplashCrypto surpassing stocks in daily trading volumeIt’s worth highlighting the surge in the Korean cryptocurrency market, where the daily trading volume has recently eclipsed that of the Korean Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI).According to local news outlet Maeil Business Newspaper, on October 24, KOSPI recorded a trading volume of KRW 7.83 trillion ($5.8 billion). Yet, in a 24-hour span from 9 a.m. (KST) on October 23 to 9 a.m. on October 24, the combined trading volume of the top five Korean cryptocurrency exchanges reached KRW 8.44 trillion.Breaking it down by exchange, Upbit had a 24-hour trading volume of KRW 6.97 trillion, followed by Bithumb with KRW 1.36 trillion, Coinone with KRW 87.6 billion, Korbit with KRW 18.8 billion, and Gopax with KRW 2.2 billion.Retail investors leaving the stock marketThe surge in the Korean crypto market is largely due to retail investors shifting their focus away from the Korean stock market. This move comes in response to challenges the stock market has been grappling with, such as monetary tightening in the US and increased volatility stemming from the Israel-Hamas war.
