Sejong Telecom to showcase real estate STO platform at 2023 Blockchain Grand Week

Sejong Telecom announced that it is participating in the upcoming 2023 Blockchain Grand Week from Wednesday to Thursday in Seoul to showcase BBRIC — its blockchain-based security token offering (STO) service that tokenizes real estate profit rights — while securing business partners in the process.

Leveraging blockchain technology in real estate

BBRIC is built and operated on distributed ledger technology, which protects investors by digitizing their real estate profit rights and recording them on the ledger. This customizable solution enables enterprises to operate and manage the life cycle of an STO, including token issuance, investment product sales, investor deposits and transactions.

Corporate clients can seamlessly integrate BBRIC into their respective services or platforms to issue and trade security tokens, calculate dividends, conduct settlements and organize shareholder meetings. They can also securely manage tokens and digital wallets based on smart contracts.

“Our technology-intensive STO solution will be a great help to companies that are preparing STO-related projects,” said Park Hyo-jin, head of Sejong Telecom’s marketing strategy division.

 

Bringing BBRIC to the masses

The 2023 Blockchain Grand Week — hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and jointly organized by the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA), the Korea Internet and Security Agency (KISA) and the Institute of Information and Communications Technology Planning and Evaluation (IITP) — aims to promote the value of blockchain technology in enhancing trust in the digital age.

Additionally, Sejong Telecom plans to introduce BBRIC at SoftWave, the largest software exhibition in Korea, set to take place at the end of this month. This follows the company’s presentation at the Busan Blockchain City Conference, which showcased the feats of technological innovation in regulation-free zones. Sejong also seeks to expand its network and accelerate the commercialization of its service.

The company will also share updates on its submission for a proof of concept (PoC) project to the NIPA. This project involves building a blockchain-based platform for issuing and distributing security tokens and integrating systems for the utilization of mineral resources.

Sejong Telecom also recently partnered with enterprises like Hyosung TNS and KOREIT to promote BBRIC and expand the products and services available on the platform.

Korean Prosecutors Allocate $734K Budget for Crypto Crime InvestigationsThe South Korean Supreme Prosecutors’ Office has earmarked a budget of up to KRW 986 million (approximately $734,000) this year for investigations pertaining to virtual assets, according to data received by the local newspaper Law Times from the Ministry of Justice last Thursday. The significant size of the budget suggests that the prosecution is prioritizing efforts to combat the growing surge in virtual asset-related crimes.Photo by Tingey Injury Law Firm on UnsplashBudget divisionWithin this budget, KRW 778 million has been designated for the purchase of software licenses for virtual asset tracing and analysis equipment, while KRW 280 million has been allocated for an integrated strategic plan to establish a platform for analyzing and tracing unauthorized virtual asset transactions. The budget for this platform consists of preliminary planning costs. Related expenditures are expected to increase as the project is fully implemented.“It is true that our budgets are being concentrated on crimes related to virtual assets due to the fact that they have recently become a social issue,” said a prosecution official. “It may not be a lot compared to our overall budget, but assigning almost KRW 1 billion for one specific field of investigation is still a considerate amount.”Rising crypto crimesIn Korea, crimes associated with virtual assets have been increasing annually. This includes tax evasion, bribery, foreign exchange law violations, and money laundering, as well as cryptocurrency market issues including issuance, listing, and distribution. According to the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office, reported cases of suspicious virtual asset transactions received by the Korea Financial Intelligence Unit (KoFIU) surged from an average of 66 cases per month in 2021 to 900 cases in 2022, then 943 cases in 2023 — a fourteen-fold increase in just three years.Subsequently, the scale of the damages caused by cryptocurrency crimes has also seen a sharp rise. The total value of all reported damages skyrocketed from KRW 467.4 billion in 2017 to KRW 1.02 trillion last year, more than doubling in five years. The cumulative loss over this period exceeds KRW 5.3 trillion.Focused effortsThe prosecution has thus dispatched financial experts from organizations including KoFIU and Korea Exchange to create a joint virtual asset crime investigation unit under the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors’ Office dedicated to investigating cryptocurrency crimes.The prosecution’s Cybercrime Investigation Division has also begun developing a tracking system optimized for the Korean market to trace the flow of virtual assets. The foreign software that is currently being used for tracking comes with considerable expenses and limitations, particularly for tracking flows within the domestic market, where there are many transactions involving smaller, locally-issued cryptocurrencies called “kimchi coins.”“We are dedicating our manpower and technological development to virtual asset investigations,” said a high-ranking official from the prosecution. “We will also strive to secure the budget necessary for these efforts.”

They argue that regulatory requirements do not significantly differ solely because a security is in tokenized form. Each state has been actively engaged in local and global activities surrounding security tokens, including state involvement in the advancement of security token technology and cross-border transactions.Main findingsThe report’s main findings emphasize that while regulators in the APAC region are making strides in introducing digital asset legislation, the road ahead will not be without challenges.Legislating a cross-border industry poses difficulties that necessitate harmonization to foster a robust and interconnected ecosystem. Digital assets originating in Asia can be traded globally and vice versa. Merely identifying the asset’s place of origin is no longer sufficient.Although the report delves into the efforts of individual regulators, it emphasizes the need for long-term collaboration to establish a unified vision and practical implementation of regulations for this borderless phenomenon.Regulatory challengesThe regulatory challenges faced by South Korea, Singapore, and Hong Kong in driving the growth of digital assets in the APAC region are multifaceted. They include the intricacies of legislating an inherently cross-border industry. In turn, that can lead to the potential violation of legislation from other jurisdictions.The lack of harmonization among different jurisdictions, and variations in regulatory approaches among the three regulators are likely to be problematic. BingX signs sponsorship deal with English Premier League club

Meanwhile, the current shirt sponsor, Infinite Athlete, will transition to a training sleeve sponsorship starting next season. While details about the fate of Chelsea’s training kit deal with Trivago, an online hotel booking site, remain uncertain, the club is navigating sponsorship changes in the wake of owner Roman Abramovich’s prior ownership and UK government sanctions. Corporate rebrandEstablished in 2018, BingX operates as a cryptocurrency exchange headquartered in Singapore, catering to a user base of over 10 million in Southeast Asia and North America. In November, the company announced that it was rebranding the business. Part of that process was understood to involve an overhaul of BingX’s visual identity, with the introduction of a streamlined logo. Sponsorship within the English Premier League is a high profile marketing move that will undoubtedly bring more visibility to that brand. Crypto marketing spend reboundThe marketing spend of crypto firms relative to high profile sponsorship deals has recovered significantly in recent months. Such sponsorship deals peaked at the top of the crypto market in 2021. That period saw profligate spending by many of the large crypto platforms. A standout example was provided by the $135 million sponsorship deal signed by fraudulently run crypto exchange FTX for the Miami Heat stadium naming rights in the United States. While that opulent sponsorship spending subsided during the bear market, it appears that there has been a modest resurgence as market conditions have improved. Seychelles-based crypto platform OKX has ongoing marketing relationships with the McLaren Formula One racing team and Manchester City Football Club. In March, U.S.-based crypto exchange Kraken announced a marketing partnership with the Williams Formula One racing team. Earlier this week it emerged that crypto gambling platform Stake.com had signed a sponsorship deal with the Sauber Formula One team. 18 of the 20 English Premier League clubs are now understood to have agreed sponsorship deals at one time or another with crypto companies. This demonstrates the growing trend of cryptocurrency platforms associating with high-profile sports partnerships, enhancing their visibility and influence in the market. Chelsea is actively seeking a front-of-shirt sponsorship deal, considering potential collaborations, including discussions with Saudi national carrier Riyadh Air. It’s understood that the BingX deal has been agreed for in excess of £10 million ($12.7 million) per season.
