Maxst launches extended reality-based metaverse platform

South Korean augmented reality (AR) technology firm Maxst has officially launched its spatial AR platform dubbed “Maxverse” on Tuesday (local time). This comes after a series of various field tests and improvements since the platform’s beta launch last year.

“Maxverse is a new platform that enables the construction of reality-based metaverses along with extended reality (XR) content creation and distribution,” explained Kang Min-soo, who leads the development of the platform. “We are currently working with several local governments and businesses to develop services that use our platform, and we expect Maxverse to play a significant role in hastening the impending metaverse era.”

Maxverse, unlike traditional virtual reality-based metaverses, allows users to create metaverse experiences based on the real world as captured on camera. It is equipped with an array of tools including Space SDK, an XR software development kit (SDK) that allows seamless implementation of spatial maps to virtual reality applications; Space+ Maker, where users can author their own XR content; and Space+ Viewer, where they can share their original content on apps and websites to be experienced through AR and VR.

The platform leverages three-dimensional reconstruction technology to create spatial maps and a visual positioning system (VPS) to recognize a user’s location. Maxst highlighted that these would become a vital feature in connecting the metaverse and the real world in the future.

Maxverse also comes with a Passport social login feature — a Web3 service that allows users to sign in to various services with their Passport account. It makes use of the OAuth 2.0 authorization framework and the OpenID Connect protocol to simplify the complex authentication and authorization processes, granting developers access to Maxverse’s resources.

 

Anticipation for real-world use cases

Maxverse’s purpose is to ultimately let anyone easily create and participate in metaverse spaces. Users can generate their own unique services by locating self-created content assets like images, videos and audio on XR metaverse spaces that closely resemble the real world. Maxst expressed hopes for the platform’s potential to be extensively utilized across a diverse range of industries such as e-commerce, real estate, education and tourism.

This joint enterprise has claimed a leading position in the Korean NFT trading arena, having exceeded an accumulated trading volume of KRW 30 billion ($23 million) as of April last year.The Pala platform serves as a one-stop shop for NFT services, including NFT minting, secondary market sales and launchpads. It accommodates a range of blockchains like Klaytn, Ethereum and Polygon.NEOPIN has been expanding its offerings to improve user experience, introducing services beyond its DeFi suite. This includes their NFT wallet capabilities. Following its announcement last year to intensify focus on NFT initiatives, NEOPIN has updated its wallets to support multiple NFT standards, such as KIP-17, ERC-721 and EIP-5192.

Ripple supports Japanese Web3 initiative & crypto research within APAC

Ripple Labs, the American technology company that developed and supports XRP and the XRP Ledger (XRPL), has partnered with Japan’s Web3 Salon initiative, while in a separate development, the company is also funding crypto-related academic research within the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region.Photo by Moose Photos on PexelsDriving Web3 adoption in JapanIn a statement published to its website on June 9, the company outlined that it has partnered with Japan’s Web3 Salon project, a Web3 initiative with the objective of educating businesses and developers, nurturing blockchain startups and driving Web3 adoption through the provision of startup incubator programs and running hackathons and workshops.One of Japan’s most active Web3 projects, Web3 Salon has the backing of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO). The project has also collaborated with a range of Japanese Web3 startups, Asia Web3 Alliance Japan (AWAJ), institutional investors and venture capital firms, as well as a number of key industry stakeholders. Grant fundingAs part of its involvement in this collaboration, Ripple will provide grant funding of up to $200,000 to Japanese startups who have developed their projects on XRPL. Ripple’s grant funding forms part of its broader initiative to finance XRPL-related startups in Japan and Korea. Earlier this month, it confirmed that it had established the XRPL Japan and Korea Fund for this purpose.  At a broader level still, Ripple said that this latest funding commitment also falls under its one billion XRP commitment. Back in 2022 the company committed one billion XRP to advance XRPL ecosystem projects. Christina Chan, Senior Director of Developer Growth at Ripple, commented on the development, stating:“Ripple is proud to collaborate with Web3 Salon to unlock new opportunities in Japan’s thriving startup ecosystem. Together, we hope to fuel innovation and support the next generation of leaders.” Supporting APAC university researchIn a separate blog post published to its website on June 10, Ripple outlined that it was committing $5 million in funding within the APAC region as part of its University Blockchain Research Initiative (UBRI). The funding will cover blockchain-related academic research projects in Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and Australia. $1.1 million has been allocated to South Korea’s Korea University in funding that will be released over a six-year period. The funding builds on another relationship that had already been established with Yonsei University via the UBRI in 2024. Equally, Japan’s Kyoto University had engaged with the UBRI last year. That support is now being renewed while funding is also being allocated to the University of Tokyo. The two institutions will be able to avail to funding in excess of $1.5 million.Other APAC region educational institutions to benefit include the National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology (NKUST) in Taiwan, the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore and the Australian National University (ANU) in Australia.’An epicenter of digital finance’Ripple called APAC “an epicenter of digital finance.” Expanding further on that assertion, it stated that the region has shown “an appetite for experimentation and boasting thriving communities for builders.” Consequently, it views the APAC region as a leader in payment technologies and digital asset adoption.

This move aligns with Circle’s overarching strategy to push the boundaries of digital asset innovation.Broader strategyCircle unveiled a broader strategy along these lines in June. The focus has been on collaborations aimed at transforming how consumers and institutions in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region engage with the digital dollar, especially USDC, to facilitate quicker and more efficient financial transactions. In June Circle acquired a full trading license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).Last month it emerged Circle has been actively integrating its Web3 Services platform into the well-known Grab platform. Grab is Southeast Asia’s super app for transportation, deliveries, payments, and more. This integration, initially set to debut in Singapore, seeks to elevate user experiences through blockchain-enabled solutions. Grab has 25 million monthly active users in Southeast Asia.Integrating Circle’s Web3 services and bringing them to these customers eventually will mean a direct touch point for Web3 in their daily lives, and the active use of a digital wallet for each and every one of them.This latest development assumes significance in Taiwan due to the country’s high density of convenience stores, where loyalty points hold substantial value. According to the Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute (MIC) in Taiwan, “Points Accumulation and Redemption” ranked as the most practical function among four primary retail app functions in their 2021 consumer behavior survey.Local industry partnersBitoGroup, one of the primary partners in this initiative, boasts a membership base nearing 800,000 and holds a market share of approximately 90% in Taiwan. BitoGroup offers a diverse range of services, including BitoPro, a cryptocurrency exchange; BELS, an NFT empowerment platform; and O2 META, which is a metaverse-focused social media platform.For nearly a decade, Taiwan FamilyMart and BitoGroup have offered customers the ability to purchase Bitcoin at convenience store locations nationwide. This new partnership signifies a shift from physical convenience stores to online experiences, enabling access to innovative financial tools and reinforcing Taiwan’s position as a digital economy leader.This latest partnership marks a significant milestone in bringing Web3 and digital currency into active and mass market use among ordinary people in Taiwan. The development coincides with Taiwan’s legislature and regulators currently working on the introduction of a regulatory framework for digital assets.
