The Sandbox’s virtual world

Built on the Ethereum blockchain, The Sandbox enables users to employ non-fungible tokens (NFTs) for creating play-to-earn (P2E) games that can be monetized. The ecosystem’s utility token, SAND, facilitates this mechanism as it is used for in-game purchases. Currently, the platform boasts one of the highest cumulative NFT collection volumes among virtual world projects on the world’s largest NFT marketplace, OpenSea. It has also formed partnerships with over 400 entities around the world.

City marketing strategy

Through this collaboration, Incheon plans to develop and introduce engaging content for users to experience the city virtually, such as a variety of events. Furthermore, the city also intends to utilize its intellectual property (IP) for activities such as NFT donation campaigns and metaverse creator training programs to implement extensive NFT content within The Sandbox’s virtual world.

“We plan to continually develop content that enables people around the world to experience Incheon through our collaboration with the global metaverse platform,” said Lee Se-woong, Head of Incheon’s City Branding Division.

Bybit enables stock trading with USDT

Dubai-headquartered crypto derivatives trading platform Bybit has moved to enable stock trading on its platform.  The offering, initially featuring 78 stocks, is being provided via Bybit’s MT5 platform, which includes access to various financial instruments including forex, commodities, contracts for difference (CFDs) and crypto, according to an announcement made by the company last week.Photo by Ishant Mishra on UnsplashStock derivatives via CFDsIndividual stocks are being offered in a pairing with U.S. dollar stablecoin USDT. Bybit’s MT5 is a trading platform originally developed by software company MetaQuotes, facilitating the integration of various asset classes within one platform. Enabled through the use of CFDs, holders of such stock-derived CFDs can receive dividend adjustments based upon the ex-dividend events of the underlying stocks. A trading fee of 0.04 USDT has been set, with a minimum charge of 5 USDT per order. Access to leading global equitiesBybit users will now be able to gain exposure to leading U.S. equities such as Apple (AAPL), Amazon (AMZN), Meta (META), Microsoft (MSFT) and Nvidia (NVDA). By adding this product to its multi-asset trading platform, Bybit has reduced a degree of friction for market participants. In pairing these stocks with USDT, it means that there is no fiat onboarding required and transferring funds in fiat from outside the crypto ecosystem is not required. In a press release, the firm asserted that the development was a “landmark move bridging traditional and decentralized finance.” Bybit further asserted that with this product launch, it has become “the first and only major crypto exchange to unify crypto, stocks, and traditional assets under one roof.” Previous offeringsA few years ago, global crypto exchange platform Binance had offered tokenized stocks through a partnership with German global financial services firm CM-Equity AG. However, it withdrew that product offering in 2021 when faced with growing regulatory pressure.  Failed crypto exchange FTX also offered its users exposure to tokenized stocks, which was also facilitated by CM-Equity AG. That product offering came to an abrupt halt in November 2022 when the platform collapsed. With a more positive regulatory position having been adopted in the United States following the election of U.S. President Donald Trump, tokenized stock offerings are emerging once again. In March Coinbase CFO Alesia Haas said that the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) could facilitate such offerings going forward. The U.S. crypto exchange platform has revived plans to tokenize its own COIN stock, alongside other securities.Bernstein analysts recently predicted that the crypto sector is moving towards integrated platforms that offer both traditional financial products alongside digital assets. Further evidence of this approach emerged on May 22 with the news that global crypto exchange platform Kraken plans to add access soon to a range of tokenized stocks for its global user base.  The company’s U.S. clients can already access in excess of 11,000 stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Blurring the lines further between TradFi and the digital assets space, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon indicated last week that the investment bank will facilitate Bitcoin trading for clients from now on.

Bitdeer announces new mining chip and Q4 results

Bitdeer Technologies, led by Jihan Wu and based in Singapore, has unveiled the very latest development in the world of Bitcoin mining technology with the announcement of the successful testing of its proprietary Bitcoin mining chip, slated for integration into its forthcoming mining rig. In addition, the firm has followed up on March 4 with the publication of financial results for Q4 2023.Photo by Thought Catalog on UnsplashSealminer A1The company revealed on X that its inaugural crypto mining chip, known as the SEAL01, destined to drive the Sealminer A1 mining rig, was engineered utilizing four-nanometer process technology, a feat achieved in collaboration with a semiconductor fabricator. Bitdeer boasts that this chip exhibits a power efficiency ratio of 18.1 J/TH. At the heart of Bitdeer's latest achievement lies the SEAL01 chip, the culmination of years of dedicated research and development. By harnessing state-of-the-art technology and meticulous planning, Bitdeer aims to tackle the pressing challenges confronting Bitcoin miners, including skyrocketing operational costs and environmental implications. The company claims that the efficiency of the SEAL01 chip not only promises a shift towards more sustainable mining practices but also holds the potential to significantly reduce energy consumption, thereby bolstering profitability and return on investment for miners. "This powerful chip offers enhanced Bitcoin mining performance with minimized power consumption, leading to lower operating costs and a reduced environmental footprint for miners," Bitdeer affirmed in the X post. The firm stopped short of disclosing the launch timeline for its upcoming mining rig. On the financial front, Bitdeer disclosed its financial results for Q4 2023, on March 4. The company reported a total of 111,966,634 outstanding ordinary shares as of Dec. 31, 2023, including class A and class V ordinary shares. Additionally, Bitdeer revealed key operational metrics for Q4 2023, including total Bitcoin mined, power usage across its mining data centers, average cost of electricity and miner efficiency. Bitdeer's shares closed up 2.11% at $6.76 on Nasdaq on Friday, indicating a positive market response to its recent newly developed Bitcoin mining chip. However, trading outside regular hours, going into March 4, have seen the share price peak at $7.52, yet having retraced to $6.9 at the time of writing. That may indicate that investors are not particularly enthralled by the firm’s Q4 2023 results. Bitdeer emphasizes that the SEAL01 chip is engineered to meet the evolving demands of the cryptocurrency mining industry. As mining activities continue to gain traction and market dynamics evolve, the adaptability of hardware solutions becomes paramount. Bitdeer's strategic emphasis on innovation with the SEAL01 chip aims to pave the way for future advancements in cryptocurrency mining technology, ultimately fostering the growth and sustainability of the industry. Moreover, Bitdeer asserts that the newly developed chip enables it to optimize efficiency, stability and performance in anticipation of the upcoming Bitcoin halving event slated for April. Last month, the company’s founder Jihan Wu was installed as CEO, in a move that is understood to better position the company as it transitions to a growth phase.

Korea’s Bithumb joins forces with Interpol to fight crypto crime

South Korean crypto exchange Bithumb is working with the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) to combat global criminal activities involving digital assets. According to Korean media outlet Joseilbo, Yoo Jung-ki, who heads Bithumb's Policy Support Office, met with Tomonobu Kaya, Assistant Director of Interpol's Financial Crime and Anti-Corruption Centre, during a recent meeting in Thailand. The gathering was part of a three-day event held from March 10 to 12, organized under Interpol's Project ViCTOR (Virtual assets-facilitated financial Crime – Trace, Obstruct and Recover), an initiative funded by Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During their meeting, the two officials explored ways to enhance cooperation while committing to maintaining a close, sustainable working relationship.Photo by rc.xyz NFT gallery on UnsplashExchange shares expertiseDuring his Bangkok visit, Yoo delivered a speech addressing emerging crypto crime trends and necessary regulatory changes to protect users. He also discussed the Financial Action Task Force's (FATF) guidelines and recommendations, along with South Korea's policies on anti-money laundering and combating terrorism financing (AML/CFT). His presentation resonated with the audience, particularly when he emphasized the importance of collaboration between the public sector and crypto exchanges on multiple fronts, including recovering stolen funds from criminals. Regarding the meeting, Yoo stated that he found it meaningful to participate, as a representative of South Korean crypto exchanges, in a gathering focused on developing global countermeasures against money laundering and digital asset crimes. He added that Bithumb is committed to supporting the international cooperative system aimed at preventing and recovering from crypto crimes. Interpol’s effortsThe event also covered recent updates on Interpol's Global Rapid Intervention of Payments (I-GRIP) stop-payment mechanism, launched in 2022, and Singapore's evolving crypto regulatory landscape. In June last year, Interpol reported that police across 61 countries had collectively intercepted approximately $135 million in fiat currency and $2 million in cryptocurrency, with I-GRIP helping authorities track illicit proceeds from both types of currencies.Interpol's involvement in investigating crypto crimes has been expanding recently. According to Cointelegraph, Argentine lawyer Gregorio Dalbon has requested that a prosecutor and judge issue an Interpol Red Notice for Hayden Davis, a co-creator of the LIBRA token allegedly linked to Argentine President Javier Milei. The controversial memecoin, launched last month, briefly reached a $4.5 billion market cap before its value collapsed.
