OKX Burns $244M $OKB in Record Exchange Token Supply Cut

Seychelles-headquartered OKX, the world’s second largest cryptocurrency exchange, has conducted its largest-ever burn of its exchange token, $OKB, according to on-chain data.

Approximately 5.5 million OKB tokens, equivalent to around $244 million, were removed from circulation. This record-breaking burn represents a significant milestone for OKX, surpassing the previous burns conducted since the monthly program’s inception.

The burn was valued at approximately $258 million when calculated based on a 90-day average price, as reported by OKX. Chinese reporter Colin Wu highlighted that this burn marked another significant milestone in terms of the value of OKB tokens burned.

Taking to Twitter on Thursday, Wu wrote: “The OKX exchange carried out the 20th OKB repurchase and burning on June 8, with a total of about 5.5 million OKB, or about 244 million US dollars, which once again set a new record for the value of OKB burning. OKX previously stated that it will burn OKX according to the seasonal market and operating performance, but has not disclosed the specific rules.”

Buy-Back & Burn program

$OKB is described by OKX as a “global utility token issued by the OKX Blockchain Foundation,” offering holders various benefits such as discounts and exclusive access. The global exchange initiated the first Buy-Back & Burn program in May 2019. Since then, it has burned a total of 64,042,314.70 tokens as part of that ongoing burning process. Despite this significant development, the price of OKB has remained relatively stable, experiencing a slight increase of 0.29% on OKX. At the time of publication, the token was trading at a unit price of $44.97.

 

Exchange token concern

Exchange tokens have recently garnered attention following the United States Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) lawsuit against global crypto exchange Binance. The SEC has levied charges related to the sale of unregistered securities, resulting in a steep decline of nearly 15% in the value of Binance’s exchange token, BNB, over the past week.

That scrutiny is likely to have followed the collapse of Bahamas-based cryptocurrency exchange FTX in November. At that time, it became apparent that the exchange was using its exchange token, $FTT, to prop up the business. FTX had issued $FTT tokens and used them as collateral, a dangerous act given that exchange tokens have no real-world asset backing and limited token utility.

As the crypto market continues to face regulatory scrutiny and legal challenges, the burn of $OKB by OKX stands as a noteworthy event within the industry. The burn not only reduces the supply of $OKB tokens but also underscores OKX’s commitment to managing and enhancing the value of its exchange token. Market participants will undoubtedly monitor the implications of this burn and how it may influence OKB’s future performance in the evolving cryptocurrency landscape.

Exchanges like OKX are likely to carefully manage the supply levels of exchange tokens, given market perceptions in relation to the extent of the utility of such tokens, the scrutiny of regulators, and the problems caused in over-extending supply in the case of other exchanges in the past.

Bank of Japan Publishes Results of CBDC PoCThe Bank of Japan (BoJ) recently concluded the second phase of its central bank digital currency (CBDC) proof of concept (PoC) project, which began in April. The results of this phase were published on Monday, and they shed light on key aspects such as the comparison between account-based and token-based CBDCs and the management of holding limits for users with multiple accounts.Photo by Manuel Cosentino on UnsplashToken-based CBDCsThe experiments conducted by the central bank covered a wide range of topics. Among the most intriguing findings were the advantages and disadvantages of token-based CBDCs and how to effectively impose holding limits for users with multiple CBDC balances.Token-based CBDCs have garnered interest from various central banks, with some adopting the UTXO token model used by Bitcoin without the use of a distributed ledger. A UTXO or unspent transaction output, defines where a blockchain transaction starts and finishes. The Bank of Japan explored this model and analyzed its pros and cons.In the initial proof of concept, both account-based and token-based CBDCs were examined, considering scenarios where the central bank managed the ledger or shared it with intermediaries like banks. In the token-based model, fixed token denominations were used, similar to physical cash in countries like India, and a centralized ledger was employed. However, in the recent phase, the central bank utilized flexible value tokens similar to UTXO and shared ledger functions with intermediaries.The Bank of Japan favored the flexible value token model due to its ability to handle multiple requests simultaneously. However, it acknowledged that this model may require more technical resources compared to the account-based approach. Challenges may arise when implementing additional functions, such as holding limits, while maintaining optimal performance. The European Central Bank (ECB) also noted in a recent report that most payment providers are accustomed to account-based payments and would incur costs to adapt to token-based systems.Another significant aspect explored by the BoJ was how to impose holding limits when users have multiple CBDC balances through different intermediaries. The challenge lies in determining if the overall holding limit has been breached without compromising user privacy.Homomorphic encryptionOne possible solution discussed in the report is the use of homomorphic encryption, which enables computations to be performed on encrypted data without it first needing to be decrypted. That allows for the necessary checks without intermediaries accessing the specific data being checked. Although this solution may slightly increase processing time, it could introduce a higher risk of data inconsistencies.Alternatively, a simpler approach proposed by the central bank is to establish a per-account holding limit and a limit on the number of accounts a single user can hold, rather than imposing global limits. Ideally, users with multiple accounts would have a higher per-account holding limit compared to those with fewer accounts.Phase 3 underwayWith the next pilot phase already underway, the BoJ aims to test the end-to-end process flow and identify challenges related to integrating with external systems. Additionally, they are creating a CBDC Forum to gather input from the private sector, ensuring a collaborative approach to CBDC development.While investigation and research into CBDCs continues, the BoJ has said that it will make a final decision on CBDC implementation by 2026.

RWA tokenization gaining momentum in UAE

Real-world asset (RWA) tokenization, the conversion of tangible assets into digital tokens on a blockchain, is gaining momentum in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), according to a number of industry professionals working in the sector.Photo by ZQ Lee on Unsplash‘No lack of demand’Scott Thiel, founder and CEO of Dubai-based RWA token marketplace Tokinvest, recently outlined to Cointelegraph that the company is experiencing “no lack of demand” for tokenized RWAs. Thiel believes that demand is coming from real estate developers and large property owners who “want to explore how they can use this as an alternate means of financing or selling their property.” The Tokinvest CEO explained that a booming property market in the UAE,  particularly in Dubai, is contributing towards RWA tokenization demand in the country. He stated: “What’s the hottest real estate market in the world? Well, I think today it’s probably Dubai, and so, everyone would like to own a piece of this or to get access to the economic benefits of being a participant in that marketplace.” RWA tokenization dealsLast year, Liv Digital Bank, a subsidiary of Emirates NBD, the second largest bank in the UAE, signed a deal with RWA tokenization firm Ctrl Alt. At the time, Ctrl Alt CEO Matt Ong pointed to a Boston Consulting Group report that forecast a $16 trillion business opportunity with regard to the tokenization of global illiquid assets by 2030. In January, MANTRA, a layer-1 blockchain project that focuses on RWA tokenization, inked a $1 billion deal with Damac Group, an Emirati property development company. The objective of the partnership is to bring transparency, security and access to Damac’s assets using blockchain. Last month, MANTRA was awarded a Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) license by Dubai regulator, the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA). MANTRA Co-founder and CEO John Patrick Mullin described the license award as “a validation of our purpose, which is to provide developers and institutions with a purpose-built RWA Layer 1 Blockchain, that’s capable of adhering to real world regulatory requirements.” Proactive regulationIt is with regard to regulation that many in the industry feel that the UAE is gaining the upper hand where RWA tokenization is concerned. Tokeninvest’s Thiel provided input into the formulation of VARA’s regulatory framework back in 2022. He said that the authorities there have taken a proactive approach to digital asset regulation, with a genuine desire to provide regulatory clarity. The Tokinvest CEO was sufficiently impressed by the regulatory approach in the UAE to relocate the company there. Back in January, VARA awarded the company a trading license for its tokenized RWA marketplace. Commenting following the announcement of the Damac deal, MANTRA’s Mullin complimented the UAE authorities on their business-friendly approach: “The UAE has shown time and again that they can lead the crypto industry in innovation.”  In a series of posts on X recently, Julian Kwan, CEO and founder of IXS, a Singapore-based institutional bridge for tokenized RWAs, cited the Damac tokenized real estate deal while asserting that tokenized “RWAs are no longer a concept — they are an unstoppable financial movement.”

This novel approach simplifies the restoration process, allowing users to recover their accounts with a mere biometric scan.Improving UXIf crypto and Web3 are to be adopted by ordinary people en-masse, user experience has long been identified within the sector as an area that still requires development. Making users responsible for the storage of a private key is fraught with difficulty, given the likelihood of private keys being lost or compromised.Various approaches are being taken to solve this issue. Tangem Wallet is one such alternative that utilizes near-field communication (NFC) in combination with an app and a card with an inbuilt chip, negating the need for the user to memorize a private key.This biometric-centered approach from Hitachi and Concordium represents another user-friendly approach to the problem of user authentication, harnessing the power of Hitachi’s Public Biometric Infrastructure (PBI) and Concordium’s self-sovereign identity framework. The result is an account creation process based entirely on biometric data, enhancing both security and user convenience.Complementary technologyConcordium’s network, with its stringent ID process for account creation to combat malicious activities, stands to gain substantial benefits from this technology. The biometric wallet will fortify users’ access to their IDs, a critical aspect of network security. Moreover, the technology’s applicability extends beyond Concordium, offering potential integration with any blockchain network.Users of the biometric wallet will have the flexibility to unlock their accounts either by regenerating seed words through a biometric scan or by decrypting a copy of the seed words. This dual-layered approach ensures that access is granted solely through the user’s unique biometric data, enhancing security and mitigating the risk of loss or theft.Developing this cutting-edge technology poses challenges, particularly in handling the inherent “fuzziness” of biometric data, where no two scans produce identical results, even from the same individual. Hitachi’s team addressed this by employing fuzzy key generation and specialized error correction technology, effectively distinguishing between scans.Unlike traditional crypto wallets that necessitate secure storage of seed words, the biometric wallet by Hitachi and Concordium, alongside solutions like multiparty-computation wallets and magic links, aims to overcome this hurdle. The goal is to resolve the issue of lost backup, a significant barrier to wider crypto adoption.This is not Hitachi’s first foray into the crypto/blockchain space. In mid-November the company announced a collaboration with the Japan Exchange Group (JPX), banking giant Nomura and Nomura portfolio company BOOSTRY to launch a $69 million digital green bond on the blockchain. In October Hitachi joined a consortium of Japanese companies with a view towards developing decentralized identity technology.
