Sun Flags Unjust Token Profits of Huobi Founder’s Brother

Web3 & Enterprise·May 17, 2023, 12:03 AM

Justin Sun, Founder of the Tron blockchain and stakeholder in Seychelles-based global crypto exchange Huobi, has stated that the younger brother of the founder of the exchange, Li Wei, has received millions of Huobi tokens ($HT) when he shouldn’t have.

Taking to Twitter, Sun wrote:

“Li Lin’s younger brother Li Wei has repeatedly acquired a large amount of zero-cost HT through abnormal means. He has sold it on the Huobi platform many times in history, and has withdrawn huge amounts of cash”.

Negotiating a refund and token burn

Sun went on to outline the action that he is in favor of taking in unison with decisions taken by the Huobi Global Advisory Committee (HGAC). “In order to protect people’s interests, the [HGAC] and the HT DAO community decided to recover and destroy the HT obtained by Li Wei at zero cost,” he wrote. “The HT destruction will be announced in the HT community. Such behavior will not be condoned,” he added.

Sun complained that not only were the tokens wrongly allocated to Li Wei, he had been dumping the tokens on the market, selling them off for fiat money. In addition to the tokens being burnt, Sun says that he alongside the HGAC will “negotiate a refund” by engaging directly with Li Wei relative to the fiat money that he has already extracted through selling off the token.

The Tron founder added that he doesn’t think it equitable that Wei should benefit from the token allocation as he hasn’t made any contribution to the Huobi community, stating that “fairness and the importance of rewarding those who genuinely contribute to the growth and development of HT DAO” are important.

Double standards

Some in the crypto community would call double standards on Sun’s claims of a lack of fairness. At the time of the collapse of the FTX exchange in November of last year, Sun offered to help, collaborating with FTX’s Sam Bankman Fried to allow assets related to Sun’s crypto projects (TRX, BTT, JST, SUN, and HT) held by FTX customers on the exchange to be traded out of the exchange into external wallets.

Trading in these assets recommenced for a time, with the price within the exchange being exorbitant relative to the regular market price outside of FTX. Many FTX customers ended up buying these tokens at excessive prices, without being able to extract them from the exchange like Sun had promised. To cap it off, those customers then had the newly installed FTX Debtor under the guidance of John J. Ray III, record their loss at the time the exchange officially went bankrupt at the normal market price for these tokens.

Although originally a China-based exchange, Huobi moved out of the Chinese market due to adverse regulation, re-establishing itself in the Seychelles. The firm maintains offices in South Korea, the United States, Japan, and Hong Kong, where it has had a listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange since 2018.

The $HT token has proven to be very volatile both in intraday trading on Tuesday and over the course of the past seven days. In both instances, it has hit high points in excess of $3.00 and low points of $2.70. At the time of publication, the token was trading at $2.90.

Metaplanet aims for 10K Bitcoin stockpile

Metaplanet, a Japanese Bitcoin treasury company listed on the Tokyo stock exchange, is targeting a holding of 10,000 BTC in 2025.2025 targetTaking to the X social media platform on Jan. 5, the company’s CEO, Simon Gerovich, set out a number of objectives which the company will strive to reach in 2025. Among them is the objective to expand the company’s Bitcoin holdings to 10,000 BTC. Gerovich said that the expansion of the firm’s Bitcoin holding would be achieved “by utilizing the most accretive capital market tools available to us.” He followed up on Jan. 6 with an announcement that Metaplanet has completed its 12th series stock acquisition rights. Gerovich claimed that the successful completion of the stock issuance marked “a milestone in Metaplanet’s financing and Bitcoin acquisition strategy.” The 12th series stock issuance was first announced back in November, with a six-month exercise period opening on Dec. 17. Additionally, the company issued 4.5 billion yen ($28,562,451) and 5 billion yen ($31,736,057) in ordinary bonds, with a maturity date of June 2025. Other objectives the company has set out for 2025 include enhancing transparency and shareholder engagement through new initiatives. Furthermore, Metaplanet intends to leverage its partnerships to advance Bitcoin adoption in Japan and further afield. Gerovich said that Metaplanet will explore innovative opportunities to grow the firm’s impact in Japan and within the Bitcoin ecosystem.Photo by Vasilis Chatzopoulos on Unsplash2024 ‘transformational’The Metaplanet CEO claimed that 2024 had been “transformational” for the company. He added: “We broke records, expanded our Bitcoin treasury, and reinforced our position as Asia’s leading Bitcoin Treasury Company.” Shifting its attention to 2025, the firm is focused on its efforts to drive greater value for shareholders. Metaplanet’s fortunes are now heavily dependent upon the performance of Bitcoin. In an interview at a New Year’s Eve party held in Miami by Microstrategy founder Michael Saylor, Gerovich commented on Bitcoin adoption, stating:"I’m slowly but surely seeing Bitcoin becoming a topic of discussion at the highest levels of government. Corporations around the world are beginning to adopt it as a Bitcoin standard." The Metaplanet CEO is optimistic that the U.S. will adopt a strategic Bitcoin reserve once the Trump administration commences. Should that happen, he believes that other countries will follow. He sees Japan as one of those countries where they do look to the U.S. as a guide on such matters. “So I think if President Trump does adopt it as a strategic reserve, then Japan and many countries in Asia will do the same,” he stated. Metaplanet is understood to be pursuing a business model very similar to the one pioneered by Microstrategy in the United States. The company increased the rate at which it acquired Bitcoin in H2 2024. Metaplanet made its first Bitcoin purchase in April 2024. At that time, its stock was trading at $1.90. Just as the Bitcoin unit price surged, so too did Metaplanet stock, closing the year at $22.05 per share.

Report paints bright picture of India’s Web3 development

India Blockchain Week (IBW) 2024 was held on Dec. 4-5 in Bangalore with venture capital and blockchain advisory firm Hashed Emergent presenting a report at the event, with positive findings with regard to India’s Web3 sector. Titled “India's Web3 Landscape 2024 Report,” the research was presented at IBW 2024 by Hashed Emergent Senior Associate Sharanya Sahai. Photo by Asif Methar on PexelsGlobal frontrunnerThe report claims that the Web3 ecosystem in India has risen to the point where it is a global frontrunner when its progress is measured against Web3 development internationally. A broad network of Web3 startups has emerged, comprising of over 1,000 fledgling businesses.  Those enterprises are being supported in India by global investment, with Indian Web3 businesses having secured funding in excess of $3 billion since 2020. Taking a more recent snapshot, the report outlines that from January to September 2024, Indian Web3 startups received investment funding to the tune of $462 million, an 82% growth compared with the same period last year. These startups are spread across finance, infrastructure and entertainment niches within Web3, although the study found that the bulk of investment funding was placed with Web3 infrastructure businesses.  Home to 12% of Web3 developersHashed Emergent claims that India is home to 12% of the global pool of Web3 developers, second in the rankings on this metric with the greatest number of such developers living in the United States. However, the report maintains that India is in line to surpass the U.S. relative to the Web3 developer metric by 2027. The world’s most populous country also has strength and depth in terms of Web3 founders. It ranks third globally in terms of the overall size of its Web3 founder base. The Hashed Emergent report suggests that Indian founders, accounting for 5.4% of global Web3 startups, are responsible for driving growth in India relative to AI, decentralized physical infrastructure networks (DePIN) and scaling solution projects. Stand-out examples of Indian Web3 enterprises include exchange platforms CoinSwitch, WazirX and CoinDCX, crypto developer integration toolkit provider Transak, blockchain scaling platform Polygon, blockchain-based AI startup Sentient and blockchain protocol Biconomy. Hashed Emergent singled out Sentient and Web3 infrastructure platform Avail Network as projects which have showcased “India’s growing influence in decentralized technologies” in 2024. Adoption challengesThe report points to what Hashed Emergent terms as “an undeniable picture of India’s dominance in global crypto adoption.” That finding falls in line with a report produced by Chainalysis earlier this year, establishing India as the global leader in crypto adoption according to data it compiled.  However, in an opinion piece written by Mithil Thakore recently, an Indian co-founder and CEO of Dubai-based Velar, a Bitcoin liquidity protocol, Thakore claims that there is a disconnect between such metrics and the reality of adoption on the ground in India. In the case of the Chainalysis adoption index, the Velar CEO suggests that a “mirage of adoption” is presented, with massive signup numbers not translating into tangible active participation in the market.  While adoption rates are high, he feels that a greater level of active participation is being prevented due to what he terms as an “ambiguous” stance on cryptocurrencies by the Indian government. Regulatory ambiguity puts uncertainty in the minds of investors, holding back the industry’s growth, Thakore claims.
