Artifact Labs, a Hong Kong-based start-up company that concerns itself with Web3 and metaverse products from leading brands, has raised $3.25 million in a recent funding round.

The NFT-focused company, which was spun out of Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post (SCMP) in 2022, has received funding from Blue Pool Capital and Animoca Ventures, with Blue Pool leading the funding round. Blue Pool Capital is the investment vehicle of Alibaba founders Jack Ma and Joe Tsai.

The company was borne out of a decision taken by the SCMP in 2021 to launch an NFT standard called artifact, which was geared toward recording historical data. Its starting point in that endeavor was the sale of NFTs of its very own historical front pages. That included iconic historical snapshots such as the return of Hong Kong to the Chinese in 1997, the outbreak of avian flu, the onset of the Asian financial crisis and the death of the UK's Princess Diana in 1997.

Expansion of operations

Artifact Labs has said that it intends to use the funding to expand company operations. Executing on that, the firm intends to fill multiple developer positions.

Phillip Pon, CEO of Artifact Labs commented on the development via a press release:

“It’s not about creating new IPs for speculation — for example NFT hype projects — it’s about driving new engagement with historically significant collections by using Web3. We want to carve new space in the younger public’s consciousness for historical brands and artifacts, while supporting these important organizations with new revenue streams to fund their preservation work, we are also solidifying immutable on-chain data preservation through NFTs.”

It appears that the firm will release NFT collections on behalf of preservation organizations, while at the same time developing technology to assist institutions in preserving their archives on the blockchain.

NFTs with inherent value

Last year, Artifact Labs Founder and former CEO of the SCMP, Gary Liu, said in an interview that NFTs need to contain a certain inherent value beyond just being endorsed by a number of people. Liu stated: “There has to be intrinsic value in the asset itself or the underlying asset that it represents. That’s what is going to drive NFT innovation.”

That philosophy is borne out by one of Artifact’s recent collaborations. In February, the firm partnered with RMS Titanic, Inc, a company that’s dedicated to preserving the legacy of the infamous sunken ship. Central to the partnership was an intention to mint NFTs based upon over 5,500 artifacts that have been recovered from the sunken wreckage.

In January Artifact Labs partnered with Dubai-based data intelligence and marketing technology firm, MEmob+. The objective of the firms in teaming up is to have the complete range of expertise necessary between them in order to offer brands and companies a strategic advisory service when it comes to delving into the metaverse. Artifact’s art platform Materia, will be harnessed by MEmob+ to assist brands who want to develop art projects in the metaverse.

Growing Concerns about Single Crypto Exchange Listings in Korea

Growing Concerns about Single Crypto Exchange Listings in KoreaAccording to Yonhap Infomax, there is increasing concern about single crypto exchange listings in the Korean market, following the recent arrest of two former Coinone employees.©Pexels/RODNAE ProductionsCrypto listing briberyThe individuals were detained by the Seoul prosecution for allegedly accepting about 3 billion KRW (equivalent to over $2.2 million) in bribes to list a certain cryptocurrency on the exchange.Prosecutors are investigating if these suspects were also involved in the listing of the Puriever token, which is reportedly connected to the kidnapping and murder of a woman in her forties in Gangnam, Seoul.Single exchange-listed cryptosA recent report by the Financial Services Commission (FSC) revealed that 389 cryptocurrencies were listed on a single Korean exchange in the second half of last year, a decrease from the previous year’s 403. Despite the decrease, the trend of single exchange listings continued. Exchanges often exclusively list specific cryptocurrencies to gain a competitive edge, as investors typically prefer larger exchanges with greater liquidity. However, these cryptocurrencies may lack proper review and management and are often highly volatile. The FSC report showed that 34% of cryptocurrencies listed on a single exchange had a market cap of less than 100 million KRW (~$76,000). The Financial Intelligence Unit also warned investors about price fluctuations and liquidity shortages.High volatile cryptocurrencies are attractive to exchanges, as they can lead to increased transaction fee profits.Transparent listingTo address this issue, experts advocate for a transparent listing process. One lawyer in the crypto industry noted that there is a global trend of regulating cryptocurrencies as securities, and if relevant bills pass in Korea, their issuance and disclosure will be regulated. Clear guidelines on disclosures could resolve the issues of single crypto exchange listings, the legal advisor added.Another industry insider has called for investor caution, stressing the need to consider the potential delisting of these crypto assets.

South Korea’s top asset manager halts trading for bitcoin ETFs

Mirae Asset Securities, South Korea’s largest asset management firm, has begun suspending trading for bitcoin ETFs, according to industry sources on Friday. This comes after an announcement made by the Financial Services Commission (FSC) stating that brokering spot bitcoin ETFs may be considered a violation of the government’s stance on virtual assets and the Financial Investment Services and Capital Markets Act.Photo by Dmytro Demidko on UnsplashTaking preemptive measuresThe asset manager has blocked new purchases of spot bitcoin ETFs listed in Canada and Germany starting yesterday and is considering suspending trading of bitcoin futures ETFs that have been listed in overseas markets since 2021. This includes the Proshares Bitcoin Strategy ETF, Valkyrie Bitcoin Strategy ETF, Invesco Galaxy Bitcoin Strategy ETF and VanEck Bitcoin Strategy ETF. As Korean financial authorities are putting the brakes on domestic investments in the recently approved spot bitcoin ETF by the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission (SEC), it is believed that Mirae Asset Securities is putting a preemptive halt to trading in other bitcoin ETFs. Spot vs futuresSpot bitcoin ETFs differ from futures ETFs in that they track the price of Bitcoin by actually holding the cryptocurrency, while the latter tracks its price through futures contracts. South Korean securities firms have been brokering futures ETFs listed in overseas market for a while now.

Bitget Report Finds Gen Z Dominates Crypto Copy Trading

Bitget Report Finds Gen Z Dominates Crypto Copy TradingA recent report by Bitget, the Seychelles-headquartered crypto exchange, sheds light on the growing trend of copy trading among younger investors, particularly Gen Z.Photo by rc.xyz NFT gallery on Unsplash44% under 25The report, released on Thursday, reveals that an impressive 44% of all copy traders on the platform are under the age of 25, indicating a strong inclination among this generation towards this type of investment and trading strategy.Copy trading, or social trading, involves emulating the trading activities of established investors. Bitget’s findings indicate that the younger demographic is more receptive to this approach, with individuals aged 25 to 35 constituting just under one-third of all copy traders. Comparatively, individuals aged 35 to 55 represented 17% of copy traders, while those over 55 constituted a mere 7%.Reliance on influencersInterestingly, this trend aligns with Generation Z’s penchant for seeking advice from social media influencers. Bitget’s report highlights that Gen Z’s tendency to turn to these influencers for investment decisions could be a driving factor behind their affinity for copy trading.A survey by Forbes Advisor in January found that approximately 80% of both Gen Z and millennials rely on financial advice from social media platforms. Notably, platforms like YouTube, Reddit, and TikTok have gained their trust, with half of the respondents claiming to have profited from advice received. The report also reinforces crypto’s status as the preferred investment choice among Gen Z. A joint study by the CFA Institute and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) Foundation in May revealed that crypto was the most popular investment option for Gen Z in the United States, a striking 44% of Gen Z investors initiated their investment journey with cryptocurrencies, surpassing the 35% of millennials who did the same.Geographical differencesThe trend extends beyond the US, with 43% of British and 35% of Canadian Gen Z investors indicating crypto as their inaugural investment.Geographically, Bitget’s report showcases intriguing patterns among its copy-trading user base. While nearly a third of users hail from Western Europe, almost half originate from East or Southeast Asia. This distribution highlights the global reach of the platform and the appeal of copy trading across diverse regions.Of note, despite constituting only 1% of Bitget’s global copy traders, a remarkable 62% of African users expressed interest in copy trading. This proportion stands as the highest among all regions surveyed, reflecting a growing appetite for innovative investment methods on the African continent.Bitget’s report underscores the evolving landscape of investment practices, with Generation Z at the forefront of embracing new approaches like copy trading. It also builds on prior initiatives and research undertaken by the firm. In May Bitget launched a corporate social responsibility (CSR) project titled “Blockchain4Youth.” That initiative revealed that Bitget understands that the younger generation is where the greatest opportunity for mass market adoption lies for crypto and Web3.As the influence of social media on financial decisions continues to rise, the crypto industry may see further shifts in investment patterns and strategies among different demographic groups.
