Coinone’s recent addition of USDT/KRW trading pair expected to reduce Kimchi premium

Markets·December 01, 2023, 9:01 AM

Coinone, a major South Korean cryptocurrency exchange, listed USDT, a stablecoin pegged to the US dollar on the platform’s Korean won-denominated market on Thursday (local time). Its listing price was KRW 1,289.

Tether Limited, the company behind USDT, asserts that their stablecoin is “backed 100% by Tether’s reserves.” These reserves comprise a variety of real-world assets such as U.S. Treasuries, overnight reverse repurchase agreements, corporate bonds and precious metals. According to CoinMarketCap, USDT’s market capitalization stands at $89 billion, ranking it third in the cryptocurrency market, just behind Bitcoin and Ethereum.

First to list USDT/KRW trading pair

Despite the significance of USDT in the cryptocurrency market, Korean exchange users have faced the limitation of not being able to purchase the stablecoin using Korean won, although these exchanges did offer markets denominated in USDT. This limitation has prompted Koreans to turn to foreign cryptocurrency services for acquiring USDT. With Coinone’s latest move, the platform has become the first to facilitate USDT/KRW trading among the nation’s five fiat-to-crypto Korean exchanges — Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, Korbit and Gopax.

Regarding this development, Kwon O-hoon, Managing Partner at the law firm Cha and Kwon, told local news outlet Decenter that there seem to be no particular legal concerns with the crypto exchange’s engagement in USDT transactions. This perspective stems from the absence of stablecoin regulations in the country.

Reducing the Kimchi premium

According to Decenter, crypto experts anticipate that the introduction of USDT/KRW trading will help in reducing the Kimchi premium, a term referring to the discrepancy in cryptocurrency prices on South Korean exchanges compared to those in foreign exchanges.

For instance, according to data from CoinNess, the average price of BTC on Korean exchanges is around KRW 51,177,250. This is about 2.34% higher than its average price on foreign exchanges, which stands at KRW 50,005,909. This difference means that users on Korean exchanges need to pay an additional KRW 1,171,340 to buy one BTC, compared to what they would pay on international platforms.

However, the newly added trading pair will streamline transactions between exchanges, making it simpler for investors to engage in arbitrage. This ease of transfer is expected to lead to more balanced pricing across different markets, reducing the Kimchi premium.

In light of this development, Jo Dong-hyeon, CEO of blockchain company Undefined Labs, said various institutions and blockchain projects will likely find USDT increasingly useful as a store of value, given USDT facilitates easy transfers between different exchanges.

Despite this positive trend, the company faces the challenge of transitioning towards profitability and achieving a positive cash flow. While Bitdeer is known for providing cost-effective Bitcoin mining solutions, it has reported losses for the past three consecutive quarters. The appointment of Wu as the new CEO signals a strategic shift towards enhancing profitability and strengthening the company's financial position. Wu emphasized the leadership transition as a means to fully leverage emerging strategic growth opportunities. He expressed the need for a focused approach to drive profitability and maintain a robust balance sheet. Stock price boostWorking from its Singapore base, Bitdeer has expanded its operations globally, deploying data centers in the United States, Norway and Bhutan. OKX and HashKey plan partnership to promote industry development

HashKey Group, the Hong Kong-based regulated cryptocurrency exchange, is planning a partnership with crypto derivatives platform OKX.Photo by Ivan Lau on UnsplashAdvancing innovation and growthThe duo announced their plans via a press release which was published on Tuesday. The objective of the partnership is aimed at advancing compliant virtual asset innovation and industry growth in Hong Kong. The collaboration between HashKey Group and OKX capitalizes on the strengths and resources of both entities to elevate services and experiences. Harnessing these strengths the pair intend to contribute towards Hong Kong's emergence as a hub for the regulated virtual asset industry. The partnership will encompass various industry initiatives, including blockchain infrastructure development, product diversification and virtual asset investment education within the region. First regulated exchangeNotably, HashKey Group achieved a significant milestone last year by becoming the first Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission (SFC)-regulated crypto exchange authorized to serve retail users. The firm secured Type 1 and Type 7 licenses from the SFC, in line with the  "compliance first” approach the company is taking. Founded in 2018 and headquartered in Hong Kong, with operations in Singapore and Tokyo, HashKey Group caters to a diverse clientele, including retail investors, institutions, family offices, funds and professional investors. The services offered by the company encompass a Hong Kong SFC-regulated virtual asset exchange, global asset management and wealth management, with a focus on blockchain and digital assets, blockchain node validation, tokenization and Web3 incubation and community operations. Its Singaporean subsidiary, digital asset fund manager HashKey Capital, secured a regulatory license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) in December. Unicorn statusOKX Ventures, the investment division of OKX, played a crucial role in supporting HashKey's Series A financing. That Series A funding round saw HashKey achieve unicorn status with a $1.2 billion valuation earlier this month. OKX Ventures focuses on investing in projects that nurture sustainable growth within the global virtual asset ecosystem. OKX, already serving over 50 million users worldwide, has a notable presence with sponsorships that include Manchester City FC in the English Premier League (EPL) and the McLaren Formula 1 racing team. Earlier this month, the company expanded its sponsorship with McLaren. The digital asset exchange began onboarding customers in Hong Kong a month before officially launching operations there, aligning with the city's new virtual asset service providers (VASPs) regime implemented on June 1 of last year. In March 2023, OKX established a Hong Kong entity to launch virtual asset services, with plans to apply for the virtual asset service provider (VASP) license and Type 1 & 7 licenses under the Securities and Futures Ordinance. Approval is anticipated by early 2024. The collaborative effort between HashKey Group and OKX marks a significant stride in advancing compliant virtual asset innovations in Hong Kong. This partnership aims to enhance service offerings and customer experiences, further solidifying Hong Kong's position as a regulated virtual asset industry hub. By leveraging their respective strengths, these industry leaders are well placed to assist in elevating Hong Kong's standing in the global virtual asset landscape, fostering growth and compliance in this rapidly evolving sector.

Subreddit Token Price Slide Following Surge

Subreddit Token Price Slide Following SurgeReddit’s subreddit community tokens, Moon and Brick, having experienced a remarkable surge in prices last week fueled by a significant increase in trading volume, have taken a downward trajectory, plummeting in price.Photo by Mike Petrucci on UnsplashCrypto.com token listingThe Moon token, associated with Reddit’s r/CryptoCurrency community boasting over 6.5 million members, shot up from approximately $0.09 to nearly $0.58 on July 19, just after Singapore trading platform Crypto.com listed the token.Concurrently, trading volume spiked to around $3 million on Wednesday, marking an impressive boost.Similarly, the Fortnite subreddit community token, Brick, which Crypto.com distributes as a reward to contributors of r/Fortnite, also witnessed a substantial price surge. The token’s value surged from $0.01 on July 17 to approximately $0.10 on July 19, according to data from CoinGecko.Surge acknowledgedIn response to the sudden price surges, Crypto.com released a note early on Monday, acknowledging the surge both tokens had experienced recently. However, in a swift turn of events, both tokens experienced a significant downturn in the past 24 hours, with their prices plummeting by over 20%.As of midday (ET) on Monday, Moon was trading at $0.33, while Brick was valued just under $0.05, as reported by CoinGecko data. Moreover, trading volumes for both tokens have significantly contracted during this period of volatility. Moon’s volume shrank from over $1 million on July 23 to approximately $200,000 on Monday. On the other hand, Brick’s volume saw an even more drastic decrease, falling from approximately $210,000 on July 23 to a mere $26,000 on Monday.Terms of service changeMarket analysts speculate that the recent change in Reddit’s Terms of Service might have been the catalyst for the initial price increases. Reddit’s alteration of its Terms of Service on July 16 to permit users to trade community tokens and avatars potentially triggered the surge in token prices. It appears that Web2 centralized virtual goods such as coins and awards are making way for tradable Web3 community points.Speculating on the token price surge, Bobby Ong, the Co-Founder and COO of Malaysia-headquartered cryptocurrency data aggregator CoinGecko, wrote via Twitter last week: “Both tokens increased at the speculation of the changes coming at Reddit. No one knows exactly what is happening but Reddit deprecating Web2 Coins & Awards while allowing trading of their Web3 CPs could be something to monitor in the coming months.”Despite the recent downturn, the overall crypto space remains highly dynamic and unpredictable. Events such as the listing of tokens on prominent trading platforms can cause rapid price fluctuations. As always, that scenario makes it essential for investors to approach these assets with caution. While Moon and Brick may have encountered a sharp decline, the cryptocurrency market, in general, has proven its resilience and ability to rebound with Bitcoin currently holding a unit price of $29,125. As the market continues to evolve and gain wider acceptance, investors will need to continue to exercise caution and consider the volatility inherent in digital assets.
